I played The Forest for the first time last year. I loved it and also played Sons of the Forest. Even though the second game added more details, improved graphics, and cannibals that act more intelligently with better AI mechanics, I found the gameplay of the first game better and more sustainable, with a smoother learning curve that helps the player get used to the game naturally. Even at the beginning of the game, when I had nothing and was vulnerable, the cannibals were not too aggressive, the first game has a good startup mechanism, while the second game feels more complex. Overall, I like the first game experience more. After I finished both games, I came back to the first game for all the completions. I waited to write this review until I reached 100%. Positively, The Forest is the best open world survival game that I have ever played. I love the map and how everything is located. You learn about plants and animals in a fun way. There is also a building and crafting aspect that could easily be a separate game on its own. That is very creative. The graphics are also very good. I love the story. It is mysterious and engaging. I learned so much about the cannibals and how to kill or avoid them. If I have to say one negative thing about the game and this is the only one. It is how the AI was implemented for the cannibals. Okay, the developers wanted the cannibals to move unpredictably, and that is fine, but they were disappearing and appearing 5 meters away in less than a second. I do not think this is a glitch, but somehow it comes from the implementation. I am not sure it was intentional, though. Anyway, the whole game experience was fun for me. If I could erase my memory, I would want to play it again :D I saw The Forest 3 in the space mentioned online, and I simply cannot wait for it <3

A survival crafting game with almost no reason to actually engage in the base-building mechanics. Combat is easy but exceptionally janky (poor hit detection). The story is somewhat interesting but very poorly told. This game does not hold up in 2026. There are numerous other games in this genre that do everything better.

Playing with another person makes this game 10x funnier because something dumb is ALWAYS happening. We spent HOURS building our base just for one badly aimed tree to fall directly onto everything we made 💀 genuinely stared at the screen in silence after that. The survival part is actually super addicting too. After a while we genuinely forgot there was even a story in the game, the main objective just became building the biggest base possible and surviving another night. I also love how the enemies sometimes just stand there watching you from the trees like they’re judging your entire existence before sprinting at you full speed 💀 Some of the bugs honestly make the game even funnier too, sometimes physics just stop making sense completely and weird random stuff starts happening for no reason. And somehow every play session turns into: “okay one more thing and then we stop” Definitely one of the funniest and most enjoyable survival games I’ve played.

И так, The Forest...

The Forest as a game is a mystery to me - because I simply can not understand how an unfinished unoriginal game that has nothing impressive in it can go out of early access and still get this much praise. I will start with the most obvious problem: basebuilding. While the game advertises itself with “build a base at day, defend it at night”, the base in question is broken on each and every level. First, building it takes a ridiculous amount of time because of the volume of the required resources. To make things worse - cutting all those trees to make a base makes the local population more aggressive and attacks on your base more often and as a result - instead of being more safe you end up being less safe with a base. The next reason why your base sucks that much is the fact that all of the things you build can be destroyed just in a couple of hits by some monsters or in under a minute by a group of cannibals - and destroyed buildings don’t just drop their materials - they disintegrate forcing you to waste even more time on logging and building. And the last problem with the base makes the whole situation just ridiculous - you don’t even need a base, as enemies are incapable of following you into caves or onto the boat where you can sleep freely and securely. Survival elements. I will never stop hating survival systems where the food and water are abundant and extremely easy to get, but the bars run out so fast that you are constantly nagged with hunger and thirst. And just so you understand how easy the food situation is here - you can forage for berries, hunt for wildlife or eat your enemies - and each of those options can sustain you easily, not to mention that you can combine them however you like. Combat. Oh god, I haven’t seen that much jank in a while. Sure, on one hand locals behave in an interesting way, with their running, screaming from a distance and everything, but when it comes to a fight having those lunatics run in and out without doing anything while you are incapable of catching up to them becomes annoying extremely fast. It becomes even more annoying when the same exact type of enemies either dies in 2 or 20 hits. It becomes infuriating when said enemies decide to ignore the staggering effect of your attacks and stunlock you with an unending flurry of blows. It could be tolerable if said combat was rare, but sadly you can barely pass a day without some lunatic trying to kill you or ruin your base. Combat just sucks and there is no other way to put it. Content for content's sake. This game has a lot of stuff that is simply a waste of time. For example - there is a snow biome and you can waste a lot of time crafting frost protection gear. Sadly the snow biome itself has nothing in it - so all of that collecting was a waste of time. Another example - there are 4 axes in the game. Even after finishing the game I can’t really tell if they had any difference between them or was it done just to make a list of tools bigger. Basebuilding too falls into that category - there is simply no use or function for it. I assume that at least some of those things are caused by an early release with some ideas gutted - but we will never know for sure. Inventory. Sure, having all of the objects visible on a blanket is a neat way of showing what you have - if you are not holding 50 different items. Now imagine that you do - sticks, stones, spears, bows, aforementioned 4 axes, 5 types of hides, a dozen types of berries, plants and herbal mixes - and now try to find anything in this cluttered mess. Yes, with time you do memorize where your things are, at least those that you use often. Finding stuff that you use rarely becomes increasingly annoying the further you go into the game. Exploration/spelunking. I get it, there are places even IRL with vast cave systems. I get it, the caves are dark without a proper source of light. What I don’t get at all - why isn't there a proper source of light in your whole god forsaken game? Lighter gives no light and goes off every few seconds. Flashlight is so bad that I could get more light from a single LED. If said caves were some kind of side content - it would be one thing, but it is your main plot route, how come exploring this route is inconvenient? Not to mention that there are a lot of places with nothing in it - like long swimming sections that serve only as a gear check to make sure you got a required item to pass - navigating those is not fun and is, in fact, extremely boring. Zero direction. In most other games this would not be a problem. However in this one you are supposed to go through caves in a certain order - the first one has a map and a compass, the next few give you tools that are required to get through the further caves. Sadly, with zero directions, we often entered caves that we cannot finish without items that we haven’t found at that point, and just as a cherry on top - we found the first cave (the one with the map) as our last cave. If your only chance to get the correct order is to check wiki - sorry, this is a bad game design. Plot/world. On paper you have one. But the more you see the more questions you have and the less coherent the story becomes. Ancient artifact from dead space that can resurrect people? Ok, how does it explain the fact that there is an entire tribe of cannibals here? Or the fact that someone hauled hundreds of dead people into the caves? And where did those people even come from, why don’t their bodies decompose? It just feels like different bits were thrown into the game to give it a creepy vibe with a “figure it out yourself” attitude because doing so was much easier than making a believable story and world. Overall, I just can’t find even one thing in this game that was properly made. The whole experience was between boring and frustrating, I don’t think that I would even finish this game if I wasn’t playing with a friend. Don’t bother with this one and just go buy something that doesn’t suck.

I’d rate The Forest a 9/10. I played it with my wife, and it was honestly a lot of fun playing together. The survival mechanics, creepy atmosphere, exploration, and building made every session exciting. Exploring caves and trying to survive the cannibals was even better with someone else. The story was also interesting and kept us wanting to play more. Overall, The Forest is an awesome co-op survival horror game, and I’d definitely recommend it if you want a fun and scary game to play together!

Endnight built an incredible and immersive open-world horror craft with The Forest. The game really shines at the three things it needs to in this genre...survival, crafting, and exploration. Your main objective (other than finding Timmy) is to build a well-defended shelter while surviving creepy ass cannibals and freaky mutants that are always creating this constant tension. Exploring the underground cave systems is fun (if you don't die), rewarding you and your friends with better gear while keeping the suspense at an all-time high. The crafting system is pretty great. Your handy dandy survival guide helps you plan and build shelters, towers, rafts, traps or defensive structures(you're not limited to the provided blueprints) which allows your creative genius to come out to play. The guide also serves as a reference about local fauna and flora and figuring out your next objectives on the "what to do list". The inventory/crafting system is unique for weapons and other gear. At first...maybe a little confusing and difficult (why are the watches hidden behind molotovs!!!). One of The Forest's greatest strengths is the mystery surrounding what is actually happening on this island. The story IS strange but the sense of discovery and intrigue keeps you invested. While the narrative can be a bit out there, I found it better than the one in Sons of the Forest. I’ll admit that I started the series with Sons of the Forest, which made The Forest feel somewhat clunky and outdated but it still remains an excellent survival craft that holds up well. Playing it gave me an even greater appreciation for Sons of the Forest though. "OLD" but GOLD.

Recommended 👍 Bought a survival horror game. Ended up with a, (Some idiot friends lost in a forest) simulator. No idea what the clues mean. Caves are terrifying. I fight every cannibal on sight. Best co-op experience I've had in a while. friends. One jungle. Zero brain cells. We spent more time doing random nonsense than following the story, somehow survived, explored creepy caves, and collected clues we still don't understand. 10/10. This game is pure chaos with friends, and that's exactly why it's so much fun.

The Forest is one of those survival games that can keep you playing for hours. The game gives you a lot of freedom – you can build your own base, explore the island, gather resources, and fight its inhabitants. However, the biggest strength of the game for me is its incredible atmosphere and mystery. During my first playthrough, I constantly felt like I was discovering something I wasn't supposed to see. At first, you don't really know what is happening on the island, who its inhabitants are, or what secrets are hidden in the different locations. I especially enjoyed slowly discovering Timmy's story, the artifacts, and the events surrounding the island. The game doesn't explain everything right away, which gives you plenty of room to create your own theories and connect the different pieces of the story. The mystery also made exploration genuinely exciting. Especially during the first playthrough, every cave or unknown location could hide something new. The game could also genuinely scare me, especially when exploring dark caves where you never knew what might be waiting around the next corner. The Forest is also great in multiplayer. Playing with friends provides plenty of funny moments while building a base, exploring caves, or fighting enemies. The building system gives you a lot of freedom and allows you to create your own base exactly the way you want. Compared to Sons of the Forest, I think the first game does a much better job of maintaining its mystery. The sequel is more developed in many ways, but once you learn its story, some of that mystery disappears. In The Forest, that feeling of uncertainty and discovering something unknown was one of the biggest strengths of the entire game for me. My Rating: 10/10. The Forest is a great survival game that combines exploration, building, combat, and an interesting story. If you enjoy a mysterious atmosphere, survival games, and discovering a story piece by piece, you should definitely give this game a try.

I enjoyed the first few hours but then I quickly came to find the gameplay loop a little too annoying to enjoy myself any longer. I don't really understand how this has such good reviews. There were some things i like and disliked about this. The Bad: - The food and energy run out way too quickly and yet despite this there is an overabundance of food and water that is constantly respawning. It just turns it into an annoying tedious thing I have to constantly deal with. - Most of my time was spent walking around in caves which are scarry because they are filled with cannibals and eldritch horror monsters but I just can't see a thing while I'm fighting them, so again it is annoying. - There isn't really a reason to build bases other than to satisfy your creativity. The enemies just easily destroy your buildings like its nothing and you can actually accidentally hit your own building very easily if you are fighting cannibals near it. - I didn't finish the story but what i did play felt unintuitive to progress and not particularly interesting. - The combat is terrible. it is very difficult to hit enemies with your weapons and basic enemies take something like 20 spear stabs to kill. Despite this, the enemies are laughably easy to kill because you just side strafe all their attacks. - you are constantly bombarded by patrols of cannibals so you never get time to rest, explore, and build. - Exploration wasn't very rewarding, I swam out to an interesting looking island only be rewarded with absolutely nothing being there. The Good: - The crafting system is interesting because there are no crafting recipes, just you jamming a bunch of stuff together until you find out what combines into what. - The game definitely has some scary moments.

Fun game! Interesting story and plenty to do to get you there. Def run this blind on your first go, because I know plenty of people looking up guides to get certain things first. 8/10

---{ Graphics }--- Good: 7/10 Looked good for the time. ---{ Gameplay }--- *CLICK* Nice: 8/10 This was revolutionary for the time but once you play the second one it’s hard to replay this one. ---{ Soundtrack }--- Not too bad: 6/10 I always listen to Stronghold when I’m cutting trees. ---{ Difficulty }--- Easy to learn / Hard to master: 8/10 I’m a pro by now but it was hard in the beginning. ---{ Story }--- Some lore: 6/10 Story is optional but fun to do. ---{ Game Time }--- To infinity and beyond: 9/10 I could play this game for ages if the second one didn’t come out. ---{ Bugs }--- Minor bugs There is a bug when you play multiplayer that you can’t get the gun pieces when you aren't a host. ---{ 8 / 10 }--- Love it but the second one is better.

Awesome game, used to play with my friends over quarantine and it was a lot of fun. The graphics and storyline are really good, not something I expected. There's a lot of detail and stuff to explore throughout the game, as well as some really cool open world survival aspects.

i think this is the best realistic survival open world game that i have ever played and i thank the Endnight team for making this avaliable at cheap price (i bought it on discount). Talking about the story, i would say it is good as far as it is not fantasy because you know, it is survival game and it has to be realistic just like the real world.

The Forest is an open-world survival game, where you play as Eric LeBlanc, a survivor of a plane crash on a remote island. He must look for his son Timmy, who was abducted. While looking for him, you have to survive by looking for food and water, building shelters, and fend off cannibals. To advance the story however, you'd have to delve into caves, while slowly unfolding what's been going on in this mysterious island. A little tip from me: let yourself die early, as you'll come back in a cave with a map and compass which would help with exploration. This game doesn't have dialogue outside some cutscenes, most of the storytelling is environmental. Like you might discover some notes, effigies, etc. If you only care about completion, this game's not very long, you can finish it around 5-6 hours. You just need to follow a guide to get the necessary items, find the path to the end level, and finish it. It has 2 endings, 1 ends the game and another lets you keep playing, but I'd recommend trying both. 1st ending is needed to properly finish the story and net achievements, 2nd ending is good if you haven't explored much and wanna try surviving with end-game items. However, the highlight of this game is the multiplayer aspect. When playing alone, it feels tense and scary. But with friends, it's more of a chill and fun experience. You can collect resources and craft items faster, build and decorate a beautiful base, explore together, etc. You still need to survive, but if you lose all health, your friends can revive you. If you die, worry not, as your items are recoverable from your death location. What I hate about this game, is sadly a major part of it: cave exploration. They are dark, cramped, filled with enemies, as well environmental hazards such as high ledges and lengthy water sections. Feels like you're spelunking through the bowels of Hell. The light sources you have barely brightens it up, and some have limited lifetime. I know it's realistic for caves to be super dark, but a bit more lighting would be nice. Same thing with the night cycles, they're almost pitch black. There's a console command which brightens caves, I used it a lot, and luckily don't disable achievements. The Forest is unique in the way that I wouldn't recommend it as a singleplayer game, but I would as a multiplayer one. The story doesn't get interesting until near the end, it's difficult, and environments are too same-y for a singleplayer game. But as a multiplayer game, it's fun to build, hunt, and explore together. It's still hard and can be tense at times, but with friends, the experience will be considerably different and also a bit easier.
