I played The Forest for the first time last year. I loved it and also played Sons of the Forest. Even though the second game added more details, improved graphics, and cannibals that act more intelligently with better AI mechanics, I found the gameplay of the first game better and more sustainable, with a smoother learning curve that helps the player get used to the game naturally. Even at the beginning of the game, when I had nothing and was vulnerable, the cannibals were not too aggressive, the first game has a good startup mechanism, while the second game feels more complex. Overall, I like the first game experience more. After I finished both games, I came back to the first game for all the completions. I waited to write this review until I reached 100%. Positively, The Forest is the best open world survival game that I have ever played. I love the map and how everything is located. You learn about plants and animals in a fun way. There is also a building and crafting aspect that could easily be a separate game on its own. That is very creative. The graphics are also very good. I love the story. It is mysterious and engaging. I learned so much about the cannibals and how to kill or avoid them. If I have to say one negative thing about the game and this is the only one. It is how the AI was implemented for the cannibals. Okay, the developers wanted the cannibals to move unpredictably, and that is fine, but they were disappearing and appearing 5 meters away in less than a second. I do not think this is a glitch, but somehow it comes from the implementation. I am not sure it was intentional, though. Anyway, the whole game experience was fun for me. If I could erase my memory, I would want to play it again :D I saw The Forest 3 in the space mentioned online, and I simply cannot wait for it <3

A survival crafting game with almost no reason to actually engage in the base-building mechanics. Combat is easy but exceptionally janky (poor hit detection). The story is somewhat interesting but very poorly told. This game does not hold up in 2026. There are numerous other games in this genre that do everything better.

The Forest nails mixin survival building and psychological horror rly well. Devs built a full, coherent world with minimal writing and also setup the sequel. It might be outdated in tech and optimization nowadays, but playin coop with friends is still insanely fun. u should turn off motion blur, it helps SO much with 3d sickness.

Playing with another person makes this game 10x funnier because something dumb is ALWAYS happening. We spent HOURS building our base just for one badly aimed tree to fall directly onto everything we made 💀 genuinely stared at the screen in silence after that. The survival part is actually super addicting too. After a while we genuinely forgot there was even a story in the game, the main objective just became building the biggest base possible and surviving another night. I also love how the enemies sometimes just stand there watching you from the trees like they’re judging your entire existence before sprinting at you full speed 💀 Some of the bugs honestly make the game even funnier too, sometimes physics just stop making sense completely and weird random stuff starts happening for no reason. And somehow every play session turns into: “okay one more thing and then we stop” Definitely one of the funniest and most enjoyable survival games I’ve played.

Just Finished the game, and had a very good time with my friends. We had so much fun, hilarious moments, epic fails and what not?!! Sure there were some bugs and glitches but they are not that serious to cause a issue and are acceptable considering how small the dev team was with whatever little budget they had. And they managed to make such good game despite that. Highly recommend it

The Forest is a game that first scares you, and then makes you afraid of even your own home. After a plane crash, you find yourself on a mysterious island where your main goal is to survive and find your son. It would seem that once you’ve built a hut and gathered some food, you can relax… but the locals have very different plans. What I liked most about the game was the atmosphere. The forest looks incredibly beautiful during the day, but as soon as the sun sets behind the horizon, an ordinary walk among the logs turns into a real nightmare. You constantly feel like someone is watching you from behind the trees, and the sound of footsteps in the dark makes you check several times to make sure the door is locked. The building mechanics are also fantastic. You can construct a small hut, a massive base, or an entire fortress. There’s also cave exploration, crafting, hunting, gathering resources, and, of course, fighting off the local cannibals. I’d especially like to highlight the ability to play with friends. It’s in co-op mode that the game really comes into its own: building a base together, exploring caves, and fleeing from mutants is way more fun. And there’s always that one friend who’ll say, “Come on, let’s go into that cave—I’m sure there’s nothing scary in there,” and 30 seconds later, you’re already running out of there as fast as you can. 😂 On the downside—after dozens of hours, some activities can start to feel repetitive, and certain mechanics aren’t always obvious to newcomers. But that’s easy to forgive when the game delivers so many unforgettable moments. Bottom line: The Forest is a wonderful blend of survival, horror, exploration, and building. The atmosphere, freedom of action, and the ability to play with friends make it

The Forest is an open-world survival game, where you play as Eric LeBlanc, a survivor of a plane crash on a remote island. He must look for his son Timmy, who was abducted. While looking for him, you have to survive by looking for food and water, building shelters, and fend off cannibals. To advance the story however, you'd have to delve into caves, while slowly unfolding what's been going on in this mysterious island. A little tip from me: let yourself die early, as you'll come back in a cave with a map and compass which would help with exploration. This game doesn't have dialogue outside some cutscenes, most of the storytelling is environmental. Like you might discover some notes, effigies, etc. If you only care about completion, this game's not very long, you can finish it around 5-6 hours. You just need to follow a guide to get the necessary items, find the path to the end level, and finish it. It has 2 endings, 1 ends the game and another lets you keep playing, but I'd recommend trying both. 1st ending is needed to properly finish the story and net achievements, 2nd ending is good if you haven't explored much and wanna try surviving with end-game items. However, the highlight of this game is the multiplayer aspect. When playing alone, it feels tense and scary. But with friends, it's more of a chill and fun experience. You can collect resources and craft items faster, build and decorate a beautiful base, explore together, etc. You still need to survive, but if you lose all health, your friends can revive you. If you die, worry not, as your items are recoverable from your death location. What I hate about this game, is sadly a major part of it: cave exploration. They are dark, cramped, filled with enemies, as well environmental hazards such as high ledges and lengthy water sections. Feels like you're spelunking through the bowels of Hell. The light sources you have barely brightens it up, and some have limited lifetime. I know it's realistic for caves to be super dark, but a bit more lighting would be nice. Same thing with the night cycles, they're almost pitch black. There's a console command which brightens caves, I used it a lot, and luckily don't disable achievements. The Forest is unique in the way that I wouldn't recommend it as a singleplayer game, but I would as a multiplayer one. The story doesn't get interesting until near the end, it's difficult, and environments are too same-y for a singleplayer game. But as a multiplayer game, it's fun to build, hunt, and explore together. It's still hard and can be tense at times, but with friends, the experience will be considerably different and also a bit easier.

No game will make you feel as spooked to run at night as The Forest. I love the bug in which you get to see birds fly in the water to eat dead bodies. Overall it was fun to build on the lake, make a base and kill cannibals then decapitate them and use them as throphys. Sadly, when we got to the final boss fight, my friend didn't get to see the ending because he fell through the map... Overall it was a great adventure to get every item and defeat the boss. Sadly the game leaves you clueless, and without YouTube tutorials you are left to figure by yourself how to get to the boss. I think they should at least make objectives so that players who want to finish the game don't have to look at tutorials someplace else while playing the game.

I have over 100 reviews on Steam, and only about 5 of them are negative. Why? Because I usually seek out games that I think I’ll enjoy, and then do my best to find something to like in them once I boot them up. Unfortunately, there was very little I liked about The Forest, and I wouldn’t sincerely be able to recommend it to almost anybody. To be fully transparent and fair to the game, I played it in a group of 4 friends on a Discord call. The tension that we were supposed to feel in the opening moments- the ominous silence of the forest interrupted by the faint, cheerful tweeting of birds, and the quiet rustling of branches against the wind- was undercut by us laughing and smacking each other with rocks. But this is also largely the game’s own fault. We tried the in-game voice feature, but it was awful. The only way to talk to each other is through walkie-talkies, which distorted and muffled our voices to the point of distraction rather than immersion. There is also no proximity-based chat whatsoever, meaning you could be inches from your friend’s face and still need to pull out a walkie-talkie. There were a few exciting moments throughout our playthrough. Our first encounter with a cannibal, and with each of the mutated variants, was genuinely intense. But these moments were completely carried by the novelty of it all, as the combat in this game is incredibly underbaked. There are a handful of melee options with slightly different range and damage. Other than that, there are a few throwables and a bow. It doesn’t take long to find out that basic enemies are easily stunned when hit by almost any weapon. Any normal one-on-one encounter is trivialized by just spam-clicking until the enemy finally stops flailing its arms around and goes down. (For context, we played on normal.) Our first cave exploration was pretty exciting too. Splitting up to explore every corner of the pitch-black cave and hearing the rare echo of a cannibal cackle and howl for the first time was a great moment. However, there are way too many caves (probably almost half of our gameplay in a game called THE FOREST), and they quickly become tedious to explore. The ♥♥♥♥ lighting stops being interesting and starts being annoying when key progression items are hidden in a mountain of corpses with no environmental clues pointing to them. The “realism” defense doesn’t even work here- who the hell would go into a cave expecting to find keycards, chainsaws, climbing axes, and rebreathers? I’m not asking for yellow paint or anything, but the closest the game comes to guiding the player is a to-do list item that says “explore the wet cave” and a meaningless picture of a random tree with an X on it. You don’t even get a map unless you happen to explore the right cave. A blank map btw, as if it’s that hard to find a blank piece of paper in a sea of suitcases? As for the other mechanics, our usual resident base-builder for survival games built a shack, placed some water collectors and a garden, and called it there, so I can’t imagine he found that system all that interesting. Survival systems are not a challenge in this game, but a recurring inconvenience, as birds are magnetically attracted to your character on the surface, and granola bars are plentiful in the caves. The crafting menus are cumbersome to interact with. Hunting is boring, made worse by stupid prey AI and random creature spawning/despawning right in front of your eyes. There is also little actual story to push you forward, beyond the simple but admittedly cool premise. They try to rectify this at the end with pure twist and shock factor, but this was not enough in my opinion. On top of all that, the game is buggy as hell, and needs to be manually saved if you don’t wanna lose hours of progress. And I’m talking “phasing through a wall and being forced to quit to menu without saving” levels of buggy. If you’re a survival-craft fan looking for a new fix, there’s still a good chance you’ll like this game. Apparently I’m in the minority here anyway, and I’m not usually a fan of the genre (Though I did enjoy Subnautica and Grounded a lot). I can also see someone booting this up alone, and enjoying the tense opening hours. I really wanted to like this game, but I couldn’t. If I “played it wrong” somehow, I am genuinely curious as to what I missed. I’ll leave the comments open for that. 4/10

Very buggy for a game this popular At one point we lost all of our progress a few hours in and it was hard to want to keep playing after that Gameplay wasn’t that standout either, not sure how this game has such a cult following

Unskippable credits... Hilarious if you play with friends, but gets boring quickly. Me and my 3 other friends ended up duping Megan and kept dragging her around until ultimately leaving her to fend for herself in a cold, mutant infested cave, before departing and crashing another plane to save our balding son. Don't buy this game unless it's on sale and you have stupid friends. You will mostly run around looting caves and building. Sure it's fun, but after some time it gets boring and there are no things you can really strive to get.
