I honestly cant remember the last time i had this much fun playing a coop game, i laughed SO much playing this with my boyfriend and its easily one of the best coop experiences ive ever had!! hazelight somehow managed to surpass it takes two, which i already considered one of the most creative coop games ever made, and split fiction takes that same idea and goes even further with the creativity!! The gameplay keeps changing constantly and every new chapter feels like the developers came up with another crazy idea just to make you say "wtf" and then immediately start laughing. one moment youre exploring a fantasy world, then suddenly youre inside a sci fi scenario with completely different mechanics and the best part is that almost everything requires actual teamwork. there are parts where one player has to control something while the other uses the result to progress, moments where you have completely different abilities and need to coordinate them and even sections where you have to trust your partner and react to whats happening around you. its not just two people playing next to each other, the whole game is designed around cooperation :3 the boss fights are also amazing and keep getting more creative, with mechanics that make both players feel important instead of just having two people attacking the same boss. every time I thought the game had already shown its best idea, the next level came with something even crazier. the amount of different gameplay mechanics, mini games, vehicles, puzzles and completely unexpected situations is insane and thats what makes the whole adventure feel so fresh. and of course playing it with my boyfriend made everything even better, bc half the fun was just laughing at our mistakes, figuring out what we were supposed to do and sometimes completely failing at the simplest things together lol. there were so many moments where we were just laughing instead of actually progressing and those ended up being some of my favorite memories from the game xD Another thing i really liked is the length. this is the longest game hazelight has made so far, and depending on how casually and without rushing you play, it can easily take 20+ hours to complete. thats honestly perfect for a coop game like this, bc theres so much variety that it never felt like it was dragging just to make the game longer. Split fiction is without a doubt one of the best coop games ever made for me and probably the most creative one ive played so far. its funny, beautiful, constantly surprising and full of moments that are simply better when youre playing with someone you love. hazelight really outdid themselves with this one and after it takes two i honestly didnt think they could make something even more creative, but somehow they did!!

I have been begging my fiancé for months to play Split Fiction, and I mean literally half a year if not longer. So naturally I went in with sky-high expectations; the kind that build up after reading the hype and watching clips of people playing it. But... holy GLAZE. The writing is genuinely awful. Not "a little rough around the edges" but so bad that it's distracting. I've played roblox games with better writing and more engaging dialogue. Honestly, I'm pretty sure AI could've done a better job which makes the whole anti-AI stance around the game feel ironic, lol. And the characters? It's honestly impressive how unlikeable they are. Instead of getting invested and sympathizing with them, my fiancé and I just found ourselves tuning out the dialogue entirely. From the tired overused one-liners to the constant complaining from both the characters, it feels less like you're playing a game and more like you're stuck eavesdropping on the world's most irritating group chat. Every conversation drags and instead of building tension or depth, it just grinds your patience down little by little. And let's talk about that one character. Yes, her. Mio. I did not expect to spend hours listening to someone who sounds like they'd unironically say, "You just wouldn't understand me..." The edginess is SO forced it made both me and my fiancé cringe. Every line is dripping with forced angst and fake depth, like the writers are desperately trying to convince you she's complex when she's really just exhausting as hell. One of the worst parts is how hard the writers tried to create a deep meaningful story but it completely falls apart because the characters (and the story itself) are so poorly written and the voice acting sits squarely in that awkward "almost decent but not quite" range. The big emotional moments don't land, they just feel extremely uncomfortable. Not sad and not powerful just... cringe. The kind where you glance at each other like, "Are we supposed to take this seriously?" And of course, the gameplay doesn't come in to save the day. The mechanics are clunky, the controls are awkward, and the boss fights aren't really that fun toward the end of the game and just make you wonder "How much more of this do I have to endure?" In fact, the most fun we had was making fun of the game. Nothing feels polished, nothing feels satisfying and it all just adds another layer of disappointment. We encountered so many bugs like getting stuck in the terrain and glitches during respawning. But hey, award winning game right? The entire time we played, the conversation just surrounded how awful the game is and what really sucks is how badly I wanted to enjoy playing it. I desperately wanted it to be good after wasting so much time asking my fiancé to play it. Split Fiction is most certainly not worth the $50 they want for it and quite frankly I'd say even the 30% sale price is a bit of a stretch. It's hard to justify charging any more than $20 for this game. By the end of our excruciatingly long 14 hour playthrough, the only real emotional payoff was finally being done. And unfortunately, my fiancé may never trust my game recommendations again, which might be this game's most lasting impact. It Takes Two was better.

It Takes Two, Split Fiction

I'm genuinely surprised this game is rated as high as it is. If it was $10-$20 I would maybe understand, but for $50 this is baffling. The two main characters are unlikable. Zoe, the redhead, is naive and sheltered. Mio, the brunette, is mean and has a victim complex. Their very first interaction tells you everything you need to know about them. Zoe says, "Hi! I'm energetic," and Mio says, "Shut up." Enjoy that for the next 10 hours until they start to open up about their personal traumas or whatever. The villain is stupid and his plan makes no sense. The machine steals people's creativity, and there's basically no way to explain what the machine does in any other way, but they're "going public" with the technology soon... so what's the plan? Reveal this creativity-stealing tech to the world and they'll all just line up to give away their ideas to this evil man and his evil corporation? It's short-sighted, uninteresting, and makes no sense. There's no plan. A child's idea of "evil." The gameplay is a total coin flip; either you're solving brain-dead puzzles and/or pressing a single button while the game happens around you like a Disney ride, or you're frustratingly replaying the same sequence over and over and over because it suddenly requires a level of precision or timing from you that leaves you banging your head on the wall--not because it's hard, but because the controls aren't precise enough or the timing is super tight in this otherwise walk-in-the-park game. Also, there's a part of the game where you each get a dragon, and both of the dragon's have wings, but only one of the dragons can fly. The other one can... climb ivy? I cannot fathom how you drop the ball so hard as to give the player a dragon with wings and not let them both fly. A previous section gave both characters jetpacks that could fly around, so why the distinction now? The worlds are uninspired. Both of these characters are "writers" but they're hackneyed and plagued with cliche. Mio's victim complex leaves all of her stories being about fighting "the man" in her cyberpunk sci-fi worlds, most of which are endless grey corridors and grey machinery and grey robots. To be fair, the cyberpunk city part was visually pleasing, but otherwise its grey on grey on grey. Zoe's fantasy worlds are pretty to look at--and aaaaalmost achieve a stylized look that's aaaaalmost interesting--but all she does is tread tired cliche after cliche. First you escape a fantasy town attacked by trolls, then you have to stop an "evil" ice king from covering the world in ice, then you're in harry potter world, then you're saving dragons while a big scary "evil" dragon destroys stuff. And all the while Mio is being a tryhard sadboy jerk about literally everything Zoe says and does, and Zoe is being a sheltered creampuff softbaby about how scary and mean Zoe's attitude and worlds are. I have been playing video games since the late 80's. My partner has been playing games for almost as long. We've been consistently unimpressed at best, or frustrated and not having fun at worst. I work in an elementary school, and one of my 3rd graders played this game with her dad, and spent the better part of two weeks every day telling me about the game and how fun it was. She's part of the reason I gave this game a chance. I'm realizing, as I type this, that you either need to be a very casual gamer or a child to enjoy this game--which is still baffling, because a few sections have been so frustrating to get through that I don't understand how either casuals or children could enjoy them. I understand I'm in the overwhelming minority with my take, but I went into this game with an open mind and high expectations--that student of mine REALLY liked this game. Again, if this was a $10-20 experience, I would be much less critical, but $50!? And an average completion time of 10-15 hours!? Even if the gameplay was awesome and the writing was good, that still wouldn't be a great dollar-to-time ratio. TL;DR -- This game is short, frustrating, and poorly written. The levels aren't engaging, the puzzles are either braindead or frustrating, and the characters all suck, every one of them. Spend your money elsewhere.

A Tale of two sons, A Way out и It Takes Two, мне захотелось сказать только одно: ДАЙТЕ МНЕ ЕЩЁ! Явно не лучше It Takes Two.

Split Fiction is a game where you can feel the passion behind it in practically every minute you play. There is an almost ridiculous amount of creativity packed into it. Every level introduced some new idea, mechanic, visual style, and so much more—just when I thought I'd figured out what kind of game I was playing, it turned into another game entirely. At various points, I was playing pinball, controlling shapeshifting robots, snowboarding for points, crossing between completely different worlds, solving wonderfully creative puzzles, and dealing with situations so absurd that we couldn't stop laughing. Then, somehow, the game managed to turn around and deliver moments that genuinely made us cry. The side stories deserve particular praise because they were not just filler content, but rather little explosions of creativity in their own right that I doubt I'll experience anywhere else. The Halloween-themed one was my favourite, especially the flower-planting section. Some of the funniest moments in the game came from them! The main story itself develops in a way that pushes the game to further extremes; as the machine becomes increasingly unstable, the worlds themselves do so with it, and this progression gave the developers an excuse to get even more ambitious with what happens around you. Even the boss fights refused to settle into a formula. Every single one felt like a completely unique idea rather than a variation of the last, and then there was the finale... I genuinely don't know how to describe it without ruining what makes it so special. It was completely and utterly mind-bending. The game took everything it had been doing and pushed it to its absolute limit. Now, I've played a lot of games, but I don't think I've ever experienced anything quite like that sequence before. It was technically impressive, visually insane, incredibly imaginative, and one of those moments where I found myself wondering how somebody even came up with the idea in the first place. But beyond all the mechanics and creativity, my favourite part of this game will always be the joy it engendered. There were evenings where I had to force myself to launch the game and start a session; I was miserable, tired, and struggling to motivate myself. But every single time we played, I felt energised, happy, distracted... and sure, maybe the happiness didn't always last very long after we stopped playing, but for those few hours... I was laughing, thinking, getting completely absorbed in whatever bizarre world the game had thrown us into next, and forgetting about everything else for a while. I don't think every game needs to have some profound emotional impact on the person playing it, but for me, this one happened to arrive at a time when those treasured, fleeting little pockets of happiness genuinely mattered most, and that's probably the highest compliment I can give Split Fiction. It was not simply an incredibly creative co-op game. It was a game that constantly surprised me, made me laugh until I couldn't breathe, occasionally made me cry, and at times, even gave me something to look forward to. You can feel the love that went into making this, and I hope you can feel the love I have for this game by reading this. Simply beautiful.

After crushing it with It Takes Two, Hazelight absolutely hits another home run with Split Fiction. Same chill difficulty, top tier visuals n that cozy feel-good story vibe the studio’s famous for. What really blew me away most is the sidestory content. Every single arc’s got its own unique flavor n packed full of wild creativity, especially the hand-drawn storybook chapters. The level of polish there is straight up mind blowing. Hope the devs keep this high quality streak going n drop more great games down the line.

Split Fiction looks stunning and plays well enough, but man, the writing is brutal. I went in hoping for something on par with A Way Out or It Takes Two, but narrative-wise, this is easily Hazelight's weakest game. The execution is pure cringe. The dialogue is packed with "quirky" one-liners and forced banter that tries way too hard to be funny. It feels like millennial humour doing its absolute best to be funny and just missing every time. My co-op partner and I spent half the game just staring at each other in disbelief at what the characters were saying. Story-wise, it's cliché after cliché. Nothing surprised me, nothing made me want to know what happened next, and I honestly never ended up caring what either character had to say. The plot itself is thin and predictable. I checked out around the halfway point and was basically just pushing through for the gameplay at that point. Which is the frustrating part, because the game itself is actually solid. Visually it's incredible, and the co-op mechanics are fun more often than not. But these games live or die on their story, and this one just falls flat. Great graphics and fun co-op ideas can't carry writing this cheesy. Grab it if you just want a decent co-op platformer, but set your expectations low if you've played any of Hazelight's other games.

к. безумно влюблена в It takes two.

Split Fiction мне понравилась даже больше, чем It Takes Two.

Very uninspired and very boring. The dialogue is cringy in some areas but it's mostly okay. The problem is that the game does very little to encourage teamwork. For 95% of the game you're just running down a hallway side by side and sometimes opening a door for the other before immediately rejoining. You may as well be playing a single player with how little interactivity that game has. The final level is creative and fun and is like what I expected the majority of the game, but it's only the final level. Pretty disappointing overall. Visually pretty but gameplay is a huge step-down from It Takes Two. There's also no puzzle solving or really anything to slow you down or work together. The powers you get each level are also incredibly boring and uncreative. Not the worst game but definitely not the best. We just didn't really have any fun playing it, like, at all. It's a shame.

I almost never write reviews. In fact, I normally don't bother writing them at all. But for Split Fiction, I'm making an exception. I played the entire game through the Friend's Pass, which means I got to experience this incredible adventure without even having to buy my own copy. And honestly, that is exactly why I felt I HAD to write a review. This game is worth every cent of its price. Since the Friend's Pass gave me the opportunity to experience the whole game, the least I can do is give something back by sharing how much this experience meant to me. I have never played a game like Split Fiction before. I’m a keyboard-and-mouse player, and somehow Split Fiction actually taught me how to play with a controller. That alone says something about how much this game pulled me in. It feels like everything that can exist in gaming has been brought together here: 2D, 3D, platforming, shooters, puzzles, action, completely different worlds and mechanics — and somehow it all fits together into one coherent adventure. You need a brilliant mind to put so many ideas into one game without turning it into a mess. The graphics and art direction absolutely blew me away. But honestly, I can't even properly explain what I experienced, because this game feels beyond words. You have to experience it yourself. From start to finish, Split Fiction is a rollercoaster of action, creativity, surprises, and split-second decisions. Just when you think you've seen what the game has to offer, it throws something completely new at you. This is not some quick cash-grab game. This is a REAL adventure, one that I felt through my bones. After playing Split Fiction, I still have hope for the gaming industry. And since I played this masterpiece through the Friend's Pass, I think it's only fair that I put my money where my mouth is. I'm buying It Takes Two next. Hazelight Studios, you've earned it. Absolutely brilliant.

This game wasn't what I expected going into it (story, gameplay and presentation), having come straight from A Way Out. This game fixes all the issues we had with A Way Out. Characters are very hit or miss. You'll either enjoy them or rolls your eyes at them. The story does weave in personality of both characters quite well, despite the story being somewhat disconnected early on, only properly shining through during the third act. But that's mainly to lay the ground work for the characters to change and set up the story, as well as allowing the the gameplay to be fun and diverse. This game actually has gameplay. Mostly basic parkour and puzzle solving with different gimmicks between levels, it for the most part always remains quite fun and enjoyable. You do need to work together to progress through it, however it that does bring up my main issue with this: it often feels like one person does something to allow the second person to progress, for that person to then do something to enable that person to progress. That means that there is some waiting around on the other player to progress a function, instead of working together simultaneously. This isn't the entire, there are several parts where you work together simultaneously to progress at the same time, however the parts where this isn't the case does bring the experience down slightly in certain sections. The overall experience, variety and gameplay still puts the game on the highly enjoyable side of the spectrum. The "glitches" (optional side content) is where the game stands out the most for me. They are always unique, really out there and fun. The majority of us both praising the game and laughing was during playing glitches, giving us a break from the parkour and current story line. Must have been a lot of work to create assets for these small, optional sections of the game, but they are genuinely worth it and I am so glad they decided to dedicate time and effort to create them. Desync is really rare compared to A Way Out, with only two instances of it happening in the whole playthrough (one led to a random disconnect and the other being mid boss which led to a restarting a checkpoint). There are several instances of textures having gaps in them, often in floors in the second half of the game, but despite those this game appear to be highly polished. One thing that worries me however, is this game performance during the finale of the game. Both of us own very similar higher end rigs, but both noticed our GPUs peaking and slight drops in frames during the finale sequence, though not to a major point. It does make me worry how my previous GPU (4060) would handle the finale.

This was an absolute waste of my time. I will never get these 14 and a half hours back. The premise was very interesting, but I imagined it a little different in terms of gameplay. I thought we'd actually have the different genres and worlds merge, which did not happen until the very end of the game, instead of just switching which one we're in together. At that point I already wanted to stop playing entirely. The most irritating part was really just how painfully bad the writing is. The dialogue is extremely corny and unrealistic, and the characters' dynamics are pushed onto you without even having any actual substance. It starts off with them just constantly bickering, putting each other down, and being ridiculously negative all the time. They don't like each other's stories simply because they're different genres and have different plot points or visuals, so they just opt for insulting everything they don't like as if their opinions are the truth. It is genuinely the most pretentious piece of writing I have seen in a while. Eventually the two main characters seem to form a bond, but at that point you just hate them both already anyway because they're pessimistic little ♥♥♥♥♥ with no appreciation for other people and their differences in taste. There is no reason for them to suddenly like each other. Everything about their dynamic comes off as purely obnoxious, unrealistic, and inherently boring. I have zero interest in either of these two or their stories, but the game still keeps shoving their little sob stories down your throat. They don't do anything to pull you in, yet still expect emotional investment. Not to mention how much this game just keeps telling you everything straight up and treating the audience like a moron who cannot connect the dots themself. Every metaphor is just explained to you instead of letting you use your own brain to think about it and interpret it individually. Not that there was even much to interpret uniquely to begin with though. Even when you do get a chance to read into something yourself, it will later be treated like some crazy plot twist as if it wasn't already obvious. There are far too many clichés in this game and it feels like it was just written by someone with very little reading experience and even less writing experience. It could've genuinely been a great story, but everything was just badly executed in the storytelling. The writing has so many flaws and just constantly falls flat, especially at the end when you're meant to care for the characters but you just really don't. I am purely and entirely disappointed by this game, even more so because it looks like something that would've had better writing with actual effort put into it. Hire better writers and maybe a few beta readers too. You'd be surprised how essential the beta readers are for your story to not treat your audience like idiots and to tell a meaningful story. As a writer, I feel insulted. The writing isn't the only issue though. The fighting sequences tend to get very repetitive and make you do just one thing at once or too many things at once, but it's usually the former. At one point you just get bored but you have to keep going and going. There's very little engagement in general due to the puzzles being far too easy and simple to the point they're really not puzzles anymore but just quick obstacles. The most challenging part in this game was not getting a cramp from spamming the triangle button on my controller occasionally. Towards the end I just sat there wishing for it to just finally end already. They kept dragging it out and giving Rader all these cheesy lines that I hope to never hear from a grown man ever again. They finally give you more interesting mechanics, but at this point you've already played for 14 hours and want to quit. I've fought different versions of Rader far too many times and I'm tired. There were at least two good opportunities to end the game and exit the simulation, but they just kept going so you could see more worlds and fight Rader some more when you just really don't care anymore. The visuals are very impressive, so it really just deepens the disappointment. The worlds look interesting and make me want to explore them, but then the story and dialogue just really drag it all down. I also really enjoyed the different clothing designs for both main characters based on the different worlds you'd end up in. Visually, this game is amazing. It's just that only this can't cover for the sheer amount of flaws in it. I played this through the friend pass feature and I am just sincerely sorry to my friend who spent their own money on this game. It is insanely overpriced and just not worth it. It's quite ironic that the game is about someone wanting to steal writers' ideas to feed it to some sort of AI model and take over the literature market, but then the game's own writing is so terrible it sounds like it was spat out of an AI model. I don't believe it was actually AI-generated but frankly the quality is so low that it's comparable. Please quit when you can instead of finishing a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game.

Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons | A Way Out | It Takes Two | Split Fiction
