I've been thinking about how to start my review for a long time. As a long-time fan of the series who has been playing since Forza Motorsport 2, who has played every game since then (including the Horizon series), who has pre-ordered the Ultimate Edition of every game, and who has invested thousands of hours of playtime in the series, I am at a loss for words. This is my first Forza that I've played mostly on PC, where I can switch between PC and Series X thanks to Cross Progression. Turn 10 has promised a lot in the past, the trailers often looked better than the finished games, but never has the gap been as wide as it is with this installment. At no point does the game look even remotely as good as the original trailers, even with the maximum details on PC it doesn't come close to the video footage shown in marketing events. Visually, the game fluctuates from "quite respectable" to "really bad", the latter especially when a vehicle model appears again somewhere that was copied over from an old game. "From the ground up new" this is not. The "career mode" is one of the most boring campaigns I've played in the genre, the AI drivers are dumber than ever and the content has been greatly reduced. Fewer tracks, vehicles and features but more bugs than ever. Crashes, disappearing track textures and geometry etc. are part of the game experience here, the list of known bugs is longer than some PhD thesis. Something must have gone wrong during the long development time. It remains to be seen whether Turn 10 can pull it out of the mud. At this point, I wouldn't recommend the game even to fans.

I have over 500hrs in this game, so I feel that i can give an honest assessment of it at this point, and the YLDR version is this: The only thing "built from the ground up" was the marketing. The game looks, feels, and plays like a half-baked, warmed over refresh of Forza 7- and "refresh" might be giving it too much credit. Single player is devoid of content, boring, and repetitive. Online if full of rammers and cheaters. Peripherals DO NOT work as intended Visuals are vastly different than the trailers. Turn10 touts bug fixes like they're some sort of feature, and seem to be in no hurry to render the game into a playable state. Maybe one day it will be a good racing game, but today ain't that day, and tomorrow ain't looking too good either. UPDATE- GAME STILL CRASHES. It is not a system specs issue. It is NOT a driver issue. It is not a compatibility issue. IT IS A FORZA MOTORSPORT ISSUE. You see the "response" down below? it is a link that tells you to update your drivers, disable anything that can conflict, etc- do all of hat, and the game will STILL CRASH. Open a help ticket, and you will get more of the same- and no help or answers. DO NOT BUY THIS STEAMING PILE OF GARBAGE. UPDATE: It's a year later, there are still day one issues in the game, but now with more crashes to desktop, and loading times that can exceed 3 minutes. They have done nothing to fix (or allow us to adjust) controller integration- which is flat out horrible. Your steering angle will be limited by speed, and track position with zero regard given to how much grip is actually available. High grip, low powered builds are absolutely pointless in this game. The devs spend all their time adding things no one asked for and deleting anything critical of the game while the basic mechanics are still broken. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY.

So, Forza Motorsport gets all the bad reviews and complaints for a lot of reasons, and i initially wasnt going to even bother with it. I figured i'd give it a good old fashioned, open minded try. Heres what i feel as someone whos been playing forza titles since the original forza motorsport way way back on the classic xbox. The physics are excellent and the racing is great. You can really feel the difference between cars and the upgrades. Cars feel immersive, and in a racing game i feel thats important. The cars just feel good to drive, and the track points system (however forgiving it might be) actually encourages you to do better, and helps you see where your laptimes are suffering. The adjustable AI "Speed" is pretty on point. Maxed out requires you to be perfect. A few notches down from that and you really just have to give it your all. Turn off the assists and try your hardest. Thats the wonderful thing Forza Motorsport got right. It encourages you to try and enables you to push your skills while giving you an immersive feel and the feedback to do better at each turn. Unfortunately thats the only real positive thing i have to say about the game. It is an excellent game if you are just playing by yourself, intent on learning each car and trying to push yourself. The rest... where to begin. Its not the prettiest game in the series for a start. A lot of effort was put into most of the car models (some of them are old models from previous games from what i understand) and the environments, but its pretty hard to balance a realistic look and an over the top pretty look. It falls flat here. Compare it to Horizon 5 or FM7 (yes i know Horizon isnt the same developer, but thats not the point), where you had either extreme and you can see how its just a greyish brown muddling of the two styles. There are other racing games in the same league as Forza motorsport that look FANTASTIC, with the best combination of both worlds as far as looks go. Its disappointing. The variety as a solo player is awful. Yes, you do have quite a few cars to choose from. Yes, there are quite a few tracks to choose from, but more content =/= more variety. All of the tracks sans the classic nurburgring and de la sarthe are just kind of... plain. They're all pretty similar in length and complexity, a pretty bland course selection. Unless you're a hardcore F1 fan the track selection isnt going to stand out. The previous motorsport games did pretty well to add completely left field fictional tracks to break up the monotony. None such here. The car selection feels as if its been hit with the "no fun allowed" rule. Lots of popular street machines, lots of historic race machines, but nothing to really break it up. You have 'racing cars' this time around and little else. Sure, the whole premise of Forza Motorsport during its development was to make it a game centered around racing, make you feel immersed with the selection, but this ultimately limits you to doing just that and little else. I say again, more content =/= more variety. On top of this, there are 'seasonal' events. Content that can be missed, cars that you might not get another chance to get for months depending on what the devs decide to do. Games like Forza Horizon make it feel fun, you can earn your limited time things in one sitting. Gran Turismo is the same deal. Short, quick events with a nice prize at the end. Forza Motorsport has somehow made it feel a chore, with the bland variety of cars the developers have chosen to stick to as your reward. Furthermore, and i hate to agree with the general public on this, the game really does feel unpolished. Its not the most smooth or fluid game to play, the UI feels a little clunky at times, the load times and performance even on top dollar machines can be a bit sporadic, and for all the attention to detail the game promises you can still catch glimpses here and there where they cut corners to get the game out. I wouldnt go as far as saying that it plays like its "Unfinished" or its a "Prototype build", but you can tell where their priorities were when developing the game, and those parts are, fortunately (or unfortunately depending on how you feel), fantastic. Lastly, and probably the thing i dislike most about this game, is the way it comes off to me. From the first minute you start playing you run through the introduction, the opening bout where you chooch along on maple valley raceway just to get a feel, on to an LMP car and then your first series. Theres no... sparkle. Theres nothing to entice you. It doesnt make you feel special. Theres no Stinger. No draw. Nothing that makes you sit back in your seat in awe or anything that hypes you up. It feels like you're supposed to come in knowing what it is and what to expect. Its a Forza Motorsport game for players who played the previous games, people who followed the development of the game and stayed excited for it, riding the name of the franchise and all its history. It just comes across as cold and unwelcoming to new players to the franchise, and lackluster and disheartening to longtime fans. Would i recommend this game? Sadly not. I want to love it, and im going to play it here and there because of how awesome they got the physics portion down. So unless you're like me where all you want to do is systematically tackle the Nurburgring with every car on the hardest settings with no assists for fun, you are probably not going to enjoy this game. Its not a bad game. Its just not a good game. And as im sure everyone knows, that means its forgettable. My recommendation? Pick up Forza Motorsport 7. The physics are still great, it is much more polished and still looks pretty good for its age. The car variety is excellent, the track variety is excellent, the feel and immersion is excellent. Its an enticing game to play. It feels special. It welcomes anyone and everyone to the world of Forza Motorsport and all it has to offer. Its Forza Motorsport but better, and that says a lot.

There's nobody left at Turn 10's development studio who is passionate about cars and racing. Come on Sony, just get Polyphony to release Gran Turismo 7 on PC already.

It has been about 3 months since the game launched, and at this point, I'm confident that it will never be updated into an acceptable state. First, a couple of good points: - The driving physics are a welcome step-up from the previous game. It feels tighter, more responsive and more precise. - They are slowly ironing out bugs. (Okay, so this should be expected, but I had to think of another positive for this game). On release, the game was quite literally unplayable for me. It's... well, *more* stable, now. And the bad: - Single player career. Hardly any events, all of which are short sprint-style races. There are no events with set difficulties to challenge myself with. - AI drivers. They simply can't race properly. I've seen them braking on the apex of a corner, and even on the exit of a corner into a straight. If I overtake on a straight, they sometimes swing out to hit me. I never get the sense of battling with another driver for pole position; it feels very static. The thing is, the AI CAN drive well, when they're alone. It often leads to most of the pack languishing as they constantly brake and refuse to take overtaking opportunities on the first lap, while the car that started first extends a large lead. Combine that with the short races in career mode, and you're in a mad dash to overtake as many cars as possible before you're held back too far by them. - Progression system. To upgrade your car requires that you drive it. The thing is, it takes hours to fully unlock the upgrades for a single car. Get a new car, you have to go through the same process again. This has knock-on effects for multiplayer and the Rivals time-trial mode, where you won't be competitive until your car is upgraded and tuned. - Graphics. Sure, there are some nice details, but it's all undermined by a horrible blurriness that I can't get rid of. It seems like there's some shoddy anti-aliasing going on, and there isn't an option to turn it off. Even upping the rendering scale doesn't solve the issue, leaving the game looking weirdly out of focus. It also goes for a washed-out, desaturated look which I personally despise. - Optimisation. I'm on a 5900X with 32GB RAM and an RX 7800XT. Even with ray tracing off, the game has places that consistently drop below 60FPS. Lowering the graphics further doesn't help, so it seems to be a CPU optimisation issue. For a game like this, consistent smooth performance is key. - Multiplayer. There's really nothing stopping other players from ramming you and ruining your game. There is a penalty system, but it's inconsistent in the magnitude of penalties, and who it considers to be at fault. I've had races with malicious players, but I've also had races with good, fair players. Multiplayer is limited to 60FPS for 'competitive reasons'. - Atmosphere. This is a bit subjective, I know, but the game lacks any kind of excitement or character; It just feels rather soulless and corporate. Overall, I very much regret my purchase. Most of my 'playtime' has been spent trying to figure out how to mitigate blurriness and improve performance. That was when I wasn't replaying events due to game crashes and it not saving my progress. Even now that the game is actually functional, I'm finding it a chore to play. It just isn't fun.

This game is evidence that even given the time, Turn 10 Studios is incapable of making anything other than a copy-past Madden-style franchise. The game had more development time than any Forza Motorsport game since the original and they have barely anything to show for it. Just a list of problems that come to mind: The graphics are worse than were shown in trailers The game is riddled with bugs There's no effective anticheat online The game requires you to be online to play the singleplayer career mode FOMO mechanics requiring you to complete career tours in a certain time period or miss out on exclusive cars Car models from the Xbox 360 era games Career mode is even more bare bones than Forza Motorsport 7's Tracks that were in Forza Motorsport 7 when it launched have been withheld from this game to release as "content updates" at a later date, including iconic tracks such as Daytona and the Nordschleife AI is somehow worse than previous titles. It struggles to make its way through a chicane if there is another car even remotely close to it. Race tire compounds were implemented in a way that has made race tires severely overpowered compared to other tires because the soft compound is not taken into account for PI calculations Tire wear modifier in online races, but for some reason cannot be set in other areas of the game Can't set the starting order in any meaningful way in Free Play: no qualification, no grid seeding, it's either by PI or random. Updates are only released monthly so no matter how big or small a bug is, it won't be fixed for at least a month (including bugs that make the game literally not launch for some people). Penalty system is more likely to penalize you for being rammed than for ramming someone Online skill/safety ratings appear to be entirely meaningless Forza Motorsport is a dead franchise run by bad leadership.

After 6 long years, we have been greeted with the worst and most disappointing Forza Motorsport to date. The PC version in particular is poorly optimized and should be avoided for the foreseeable future. The egregious leveling up system is done purposely to lengthen playtime and makes it a chore to progress through the game. There is no incentive to upgrading your vehicle at all. The overall performance leaves a lot to be desired and the lighting and graphics combination makes the game quite ugly even compared to much older racing games. The marketing for this game showed a totally built from ground up racing game but in reality this is an ugly, poorly made mess with assets ageing more than 15 years still in the game. The only good thing of note is the fantastic car physics which makes it pleasing to drive if you can ignore the plethora of bad game decisions and pure laziness committed by Turn 10. I cannot give this more than 3/10 in its current form and its lackluster track list further assists this bad result.

Pros * Visually looks good * Has decent framerate even on 3060Ti * Car selection Cons * pretty much everything else * Technically very buggy, often has lighting bugs, micro stutters, crashes, problems with login and connection to servers etc. * Massive understeer for all cars. Tires don't seem to bite into tarmac no matter the temp. * AI is stupid, drives dirty, chaotic and scripted (fast on 1st lap, then slow afterwards) * Bad with wheel (made for gamepad) * Not build from ground up. It's upgraded FM7 with RT * Sounds are bad * Career mode almost non-existant. Short, lazy, without pro race cars. Content dripping to the extreme level. * Penalty system is completely broken * leaderboards are full of cheaters as always * As with every Forza - wall of DLCs. Half of the cars are behind paywall again. * Clearly made as live service trash to force players to return every week for the new content drip. Easily the worst Forza game ever made. I regret getting it. It's empty. There's barely any game in this game. There's no more any passion, creativity, excitement. This is grey soulless office cubicle of a game. Career mode is very short and does not even feature any race car class. You can only drive road cars in career. It was built around you endlessly grinding out and upgrading one car. That at least got fixed, but lack of content is still there. It has very few events, and devs are adding (and removing!!!!!!!) one additional featured event group of only 5 championships about every month. They should have left all the past featured events on the list, considering how little there is to do in this game already. But Turn10 has very clearly been tasked with building next live service trash that will force people to return every week for another drip fed event, so they have nice statistics with player retention to show their bosses. Here's crazy idea - make a good game with lot's of stuff to do in it, and players will stick around. Everything in FM can be completed in one weekend. Then stick around and keep coming back each week for another featured event to get your money's worth out of this mess. Remember when Forza 3 and 4 had hundreads of events to complete? I mean how hard can it possibly be to create a damn event poster using your own photo mode, add a playlist of few already existing tracks, set car class, rules and repeat this bunch of times, so there's something to actually do in your game? Rivals mode is where you fight for fastest lap times on all tracks and car classes. It`a worthless, because leaderboards are full of cheaters. So your fast time don't really matter. The only thing left is multiplayer, which also is unplayable because even cleanest driver rating matchmaking is full of rammers who abuse the very much broken penalty system. Quite often you will get penalized for something other drivers did to you. Also, if you cut track in just the right way in right places, you can get away with it. Other times you will get penalties for putting only one wheel outside white lines or using entire track when cornering like you would in real world racing, by only keeping one wheel inside white lines for faster exits. Technically it's full of bugs and broken promises. "Built from ground up" my arse. The only cars that are made from scratch and not imported old Forza 3 models, are the cars new to the series. So majority are low quality, wrong proportions, etc. Remember how Forza fans laughed about Gran Turismo 5 importing GT4 cars? I guess it's Forza`s turn now. Physics model, might have faster calculations now, but the handling model is still the exact same from FM7. It's bad. It just understeers or snaps. Tires don't have any grip, no matter what compound or temperature. Controls were made with gamepads in mind, and you cannot feel the car much with wheel. Which is fine for an arcade racer, but Turn10 is always trying to sell FM as e-sports sim, which it is not. You can see that in how much they are trying to push it's broken multiplayer. At least now cockpit view steering wheel turns more than just 90 degrees. But FM still cannot get anywhere near to the driving feel that Gran Turismo have. There is absolutely nothing to do in this game. It's empty, broken skeleton of a racing game, that has hundreads of nice cars and absolutely nothing to do with them. Do not waste your money.

Unfortunately, Forza Motorsport 8 feels like a major step back for the series. Instead of the high-quality racing simulator everyone was expecting, we got a rushed product full of issues. The first thing you notice is the lack of content. The car roster and track selection feel noticeably limited for a game of this scale, and the variety of modes leaves a lot to be desired. Many features that were standard in previous entries are either heavily stripped down or missing entirely. Then there's the progression system, which is just flat-out boring and grindy. You're forced to drive the same car over and over again just to unlock basic upgrades. This kills the excitement and flow that Forza is supposed to deliver and makes the whole experience feel like a chore. Optimization isn't much better either, even on high-end PCs, there are FPS drops, stuttering, and other performance hiccups that shouldn't be happening. In the end, Forza Motorsport 8 feels more like an incomplete live-service project that's maybe going to be finished later down the line. But for a full-price launch title, it's hard to recommend. If you were hoping for a rich, polished racing experience with engaging progression, this isn't it. Better to wait for discounts or some serious updates.

Imagine not having basic features like ai in private lobbies, something the 360 era forzas had. Modern game development is truly fascinating.

Typical unfinished Microsoft garbage, but you know that already. I want to point out something else: You can buy the $90 version of this game, and you will *still* be locked out of certain cars (usually the best ones) as a FOMO mechanic. You have to complete 40 races per month to keep up with the content cycle and not be locked out of new cars forever. That's completely unacceptable and obvious metric-chasing by some project manager. Note: the developer reply on this review is highly misleading. The mechanics they changed are completely unrelated to the topic of this review. The FOMO mechanics are completely unchanged and exactly as bad as they have ever been. T10 can't even do quality control on their replies apparently.

Coming from a Forza Motorsports enthusiast (over 1k hours in at least 6 & 7 and played every motorsport since 3), this game is an atrocity. It might have actually killed the franchise. The car leveling system is a huge miss, it really just feels like a chore. The a.i. and difficulty selection is a major step down from 7. The graphical glitches are numerous and glaring. The racing itself just feels worse altogether. I honestly can't say how disappointed I am after having waited so long for this.

This review may be changed over the course of time depending on the actions Turn10 Studios will take. At 18-11-2023 I am posting this as a NEGATIVE review. Right now, with the current state of the game and compared to olders titles all the way back to Forza Motorsport 2 when I started, this game is nowhere close to the quality of previous titles. The Gameplay: It's "ok" and still is Forza but there have been changes made that simply do not make any sense and frankly are just plain annoying after a short while. For example, you have to get "Car XP" for every single car you own. This means you have to unlock all the upgrades for every car over and over again. The annoying thing is that in the past you could just buy the upgrades depending on your driver level. Meaning that eventually you could just buy it all for all the vehicles. While I can understand you want a bit more progession to be involved, this aint it chief. To make things worse, some core upgrades like tire compound are made so expensive that you often refrain from it for quite some time. This while tire compounds appear to have a major role in the game (which is actually nice). The races are plain and simple, straight forward. But the AI is not so 'dynamic' and 'evolving' as they said it would be. It's actually very easy AI even on the most difficult setting despite me being an average player at best. Now the AI has a few 'modes' while racing them. 1. RACING LINE OR BUST. They will ram you as much as they can to get you off the track. 2. You got the corner? I AM OFF TO NARNIA! Yeah the AI just divebombs into the gravel/grass or even the wall without being close to them simply because you had the racing line on the corner. 3. I'M JUST ENJOYING THE RIDE! Meaning, they just cruise around slowly.... They are not going for the best possible times they can get. Now onto the driving itself..... and yeah.... CARS ARE NOT ON ICESKATES. Some cars tend to just feel like you're driving on ice. This get's A LOT WORSE WHEN USING A WHEEL. I've made many laps in several vehicles on both controller and my G920 and I couldn't help but notice that when using a wheel there is simply no grip at all. Even if you mimic the input to your controller, the car just refuses to steer and starts gliding off the track like you're driving on ice. "Git gud" many said at the start but now most of us agree, wheel setups don't work right now. FFB is BROKEN. When it works it's nice, but after a few laps it tends to just shutdown and randomly reappear again. Graphics and Sound: As many said, graphics are a mile off. While I've had some tracks that looked quite good and with some weather events involved even quite beautifull, this is a rare instance. I would say that Forza Motorsport 3 looks better in quite some ways than some tracks and, unfortunately, cars look. Sound overall decent but not that great. I did notice that on some car classes the brakes sound like a nitrous injection which is just weird. Performance: Shambles, it's not optimized at all and framerate can dip in low 40s for me in Ultra while the graphics themselves are nowhere near other games that run so much better. (I7 13700k, 32GB RAM @ 4200, RTX 3080 installed on M.2 NVME, RES: 3440x1440) RTX is not noticeable at all so rather just disable that. DLSS seems not to do anything and as mentioned, the game doesn't even look that good. If I were to boot up Project Cars, Assetto Corsa Competitione or heck even Forza Horizon 5 they just look so much better. Note: Forza Horizon 5 works like a dream and looks a lot better, I don't get how to got it so wrong here. Multiplayer: Is a lot of fun. Best part so far especially thanks to the safety ratings. However, the penalty system needs work as players who tend to charge in like the Hulk get no pentalties but their victims do. Unfortunately this happened to me once so far. Content: Drip feeding content but also straight up lacking loads of content. Forza 7 has disappeared but we lack tracks and cars. So many inconic tracks that have always been in the titles are now missing or being released much later on (like Nordschleife). I can't understand why this game lacks so much. Overall: Like Gran Turismo 7 that has been out for 2 years now. This game needs work and after all that work it hopefully will be fine. But right now I just cannot recommend the game despite loving the Forza Motorsport series. This game made me step into Gran Turisme 7 as I never owned any of those titles before.

You know how people stopped buying call of duty? This is the game that made me stop buying forza. Give up. Edit 2/20: I gave this game another shot after the update. They've somehow made it worse. It's incredible. @Turn10Studios @Microsoft @XboxGameStudios @Xbox
