in the 18 hours I've played so far, time has flown by me, other games would have me dragging myself just to finish them at this point, but this game is so engaging, so fun, I can't even tell if I'm in the end game; I just can't wait to keep going. This is more than I could have ever dreamed from a sequel to Control; the story is amazing, so many questions answered, yet so many more have emerged. I love. Every. Single. Character, they're just so full of life; seeing old friends from Control and how they are now was just, so nice, even random npcs in the streets make you want to listen to their lines; they can be pretty funny too. Speaking of, this games humour is peak Remedy, always on point, but the serious parts still bring tears to my eyes from the intensity of the music alone; ohhhh the music, it's simply perfect, plus the songs from Zoe's mixtape are incredible, instant additions to my playlist the moment I hear them. Oh and the visuals; absolutely stunning, the graphics alone are beautiful, but when the paranatural weirdness kicks in, it's genuinely one of the prettiest games I have ever played, I catch myself just staring at the environment, just taking it all in. The combat is very fun, once you get into the flow, you're unstoppable, and you can feel that; chaining together abilities, status effects and attacks is so fun. The bosses can be tricky. Not impossible; they're very fun to fight. The movement is incredibly fluid and fun to run around with jumping from building to building; Paranatural distortion to paranatural distortion. The game ran flawlessly, no tweaks needed at all. Enough yapping; TLDR: I 100% recommend this game, Control/Remedy fan or not, you will have fun here. See you in Manhattan.

It's alright. i love the exploration; Manhatten is really cool, varied and layered. and the combat is fun, although everything else feels like a step down. The main character, Dylan, is really boring. i'm 15 hours into the game and there is just no character development, and he sounds as spineless as the start of the game. Almost every other character bullies him and treats him like an expendable rat, Dylan then says something like "that's not nice but i understand". This is the same guy who later jumps off a building and kills 50 monsters in one fight. I also wish there were more movement abilities that are unlocked eventually, but all i have so far is a hookshot ability that only works in specific points in the city. I feel very limited with traversal, you get way less air time and control than you probably expect. i'm waiting for it to click, maybe with a super jump ability or something like that. Edit: Finished the game. my opinion didnt change. i think that the open world pacing issues rear their ugliest head at the last zone. where you're navigating an environment that is genuinely cool and unlike anything else... but you're stuck doing repetitive "puzzles" that involve you picking up objects and slowly walking around to place them at marked locations (this happens over 15 separate times) it just left me dizzy and exhausted. There's nothing to a lot of these puzzles besides trial and error (a few are actually smart though) The story is also weak and forgettable. they demystified a lot of the silent dread that i felt in the original Control. That shadowy organization, that i was happy to learn and theorize about, turned out to be nothing more than a bunch of incompetent goobers. The amount of times a character told me "i cant explain the science of this" is obnoxious because it's very clear that the character (and the writer) didn't know what is going on, and are just saying some generic sci-fi terms that only loosely fit the tone. Towards the end i had mentally clocked out; the game plays exactly the same at the end of the game as it did at the start... nothing fun or surprising happens. you really wish that you could jump higher or that you could gravity flip freely or ANYTHING to make the movement feel less restrictive and more fun.

I normally wouldn't write a review this early and will likely update it later but something you need to know before buying: DO NOT BUY THE DELUXE VERSION IF YOU WANT THE OST OUTSIDE OF THE GAME. It follows that closed box model from consoles where the soundtrack is only playable from the main menu, full power GPU/CPU burning be damned. Useless for most people who actually care about soundtracks on PC games. I bought it to load onto my music server, mobile devices etc. and play high quality files through high quality systems where and when I want. Not this ignorant idiocy. I'd refund and revert to standard if it wasn't for the fact I really want to support Remedy and the game itself so far is very good. So positive mark but negative comments for this stupid console-slop'ish decision that rips off anyone with any interest in the OST as a Deluxe benefit.

Control Resonant feels like a game that doesn't know what it wants to be, and isn't willing or able to commit to the ideas it has. Aesthetically everything is gorgeous, especially in some of the more mindbending areas where geometry is folding over itself, for sheer spectacle it's a hard game to beat. From a gameplay perspective, the design of the open world and combat would have been been considered outdated when Control 1 came out. I spent the entire game doing the exact same things in combat against the same 6-8 enemies with almost zero variation. I chose the scythe as my weapon because it has strong AOE and was immediately shown this was the correct decision when the game told me every encounter without exception was going to spawn infinite little guys until I beat the two or three large enemies in each wave. Every fight, you sprint directly at a big guy, swing 3 times, do the uppercut launcher, jump up and swing 3 times and do the uppercut in the air, repeat until the execute appears or their HP runs out. There aren't any different moves if you change your timing, you can't mix your primary and secondary attacks, not even something as simple as "X Y = one move, X X Y = another move", it's the same 3 hits and launcher from start to finish. The powers were where I was hoping the sauce would be, but it became pretty clear pretty quick that the best move was summons, which by the endgame were giving me like a 40% boost to my stats by existing and also drew aggro while adding damage and stun on top of my standard DPS instead of replacing it. I finished the game without having enough powers to fill my quick slots, there just weren't that many options. The enemies, aside from not having that many types, also don't have any real variety with their movesets. There's a thing that shoots lasers, and that's all he does, there's a guy who's just a generic monster with generic arm swing attacks and that's all he does, there's a weird thing with a big head and he headbutts and that's all he does, and there's healer orb. If you've done one fight, you've done all of them, there are no more surprises here for you. That's just not enough for a 25+ hour experience. Again, the visuals of the map are great, but the problem is where that cool visual intersects with gameplay. The city is an absolute nightmare in certain places to navigate, which makes sense given what's happening but doesn't alleviate my boredom and frustration with having to manually work through it multiple times. The fast travel system is a real thorn in the side here, not having the QOL of being able to return to fast travel points from the map probably doubled my play time. There's also not that much to do on the map, there's meaningless repeatable quests like "get a box and break it" and "protect a box from getting broken", but there's also an entirely separate set of equally meaningless repeatable requests, which in my case only seemed to unlock right before the final boss. There's also what have to be dozens of little laundromat and fitness centers with one chest inside them, but these aren't interesting in their own right and don't seem to matter in any significant way. Which honestly, I'm kind of glad they aren't important, seeing as there's no map markers for 90% of the things you'd consider a collectible, the only thing of value there is lore. The puzzles are also just... it's mostly just one puzzle, where you hit a generator, run with the electric charge, then hit a different generator to power it up. There are little FBC labs scattered all over the city, and I was really excited to see what individual experiments were happening there, maybe encounter some interesting altered items with strange effects I could experience, but no, three of them are an annoying generator minigame and three of them are a boring puzzle where you walk over yellow tape holding an object. Truly though, I've played some bad open world games because I was into some aspect of the experience enough to put up with the rest, and the story and lore was that thing for me. Which is why it started to anger me so much that the game basically doesn't have any of the lore I care about and is always actively telling me to stop asking so many questions. I swear to god if one more person who works for the secret government organization dedicated to understanding and containing paranatural threats tells me, "Well I don't really know all the science, I just know we gotta do the mission" I'm going to scream. Even in situations where the person DOES know the science, and explicitly asks if YOU want to know the science, and you say yes, please tell me the science, they still won't tell you that much. The vast majority of the documents I've picked up also don't clarify anything about the nature of the resonance, the hiss, the mold, or anything else, mostly retreading basic information or repeating info from the first game. My favorite subgenre of note that gives no information are the numerous sets that go log 1, I love doing unethical science and ignoring rules, log 2, I have ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up. Do I need a precise breakdown of the minutia of why everything works? No, absolutely not, but I do want there to be some level of insight I can glean about the nature and workings of the warped spaces and extradimensional happenings, better yet if I can experience the effects of them firsthand. I really felt like there weren't that many interesting paranatural effects on display throughout the game, visually impressive sure but nothing I think will stick with me like the mirror world or seeing inside the hiss hivemind from the first game. A few of the later anomalous effects I thought had great potential, but didn't really go anywhere that interesting with their concept, there's a huge amount of bending space here but very little in the way of mind bending or perception altering, and that's the stuff I find most interesting. I would have absolutely loved to see an inside perspective of what it's like to be Patterned, especially after some of the hints they gave about it happening gradually and one extremely interesting note by what seemed to be a copy of a person, but the game just doesn't try to explore the subjective experience of it, or mostly anything you encounter. As for the actual plot, I'm honestly not sure I understand what happened. Not in the sense of it being complicated, the actions that transpired were shockingly simple all told, but in the sense that Dylan's actions did not seem to resolve the problem in any clear way. At one point the game told me to tackle three main story quests in any order I wanted, but when I did so the characterization of Dylan and Zoe pingponged from "Okay, I trust you" to "You should have died you monster" back to "You're a good person, it wasn't your fault", so clearly I didn't pick the right order. At another point, the explicit method of progression that moved Dylan towards his goal, was to completely disobey all known information and the constant warnings the game gives in dialogue, in logs, and even in the environment itself on flashing signs, and this has zero ramifications. Really, the game seems to forget quite frequently that there's going to be a future after the current thing ends. One sidequest in specific comes to mind, where the mold is taken accidentally to a heavily populated area and begins to grow there, and after the game has gone to great lengths to emphasize how fast it spreads and how unkillable it is, there are no consequences whatsoever for this. When the dialogue is always dwelling on atonement for sins and consequences of desperate impulsive actions, it feels almost comical that there are never any practical ramifications for the things you do. I think a lot of this is all flash and little substance, and that's really disappointing when I had such high expectations from the first game. I didn't hate my time with it, but I wouldn't buy it at full price.

I will start by saying that Control is one of my favorite games of all time. It is the only game in 45 years of gaming that, upon completing it, I immediately started a new playthrough. Control Resonant does not have the same magic. I have played 5 hours, trying desperately to connect with the game, but it is just a slog for me. Dylan's personality is a bowl of mush. I have no desire to connect with him or play as him. For me the action is hard to read and the game does not have good enough automated camera movement or manual camera controls to keep track of enemies when there are several coming at you at once. The combat somehow feels both frustratingly hectic and tedious at the same time. One of the weapons I chose states that it hits multiple enemies and knocks them back. I have found that it often hits only one enemy even when in crowds and often does not knock the enemy back. Also, this game does one of the most annoying things to me that a game can do. I don't know if there is a name for it, but once an enemy has entered an attack animation and I dodge, the enemy pivots to follow my character. What's the point of a dodge if the enemy just pivots and hits you anyway. I despise that. The traversal mechanics that I have so far don't feel good to me. I have a double jump and a float and a dash. They all feels so imprecise and mushy. I can't quite describe it, but spanning a huge gap using those mechanics, or getting to the top of a building with them doesn't feel satisfying. It feels like I am drunk and and trying to stumble up the stairs. I don't know what it is exactly, but that is my experience. On the topic of traversal, I don't like the way the world is designed and how the player navigates through it. It feels small without feeling intimate. It is a "luke-warm" world. From what I can tell, there are shorter and medium sized buildings that can be scaled and then there are the tall buildings that function only as walls to guide the player. I understand the design behind that, but regardless of the reasoning, something about being able to scale some buildings but not all is unsatisfying, especially when there are fire escape ladders all the way up the side of the buildings. Maybe I am mistaken and all buildings can be scaled. I really really wanted to like this game and tried to like this game. I kept telling myself that I would give it another chance to win me over, but it never did. By the time I decided this game is not worth 60 dollars, I had already gone over the 2 hour steam refund limit. That's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ limit for games like this. I almost never buy games at full price or on launch day. This game reminded me why I have that rule. I let my love of Control cloud my judgement. If steam had approved my refund request, I would not have posted this review. But I guess the money they got from me is way more valuable than a negative review from some knucklehead like me. Remedy is one of my favorite developers. I have enjoyed their games for decades, in spite (and because) of their peculiarities, but as a 50 year old father with limited time to play games, I can't justify spending 60 dollars on a game that is so frustrating and boring, even if that Remedy storytelling beautiful weirdness does shine through every now and then. I am sad that I spent my money on this game.

I have always loved the games in this universe, but unfortunately this one just isn't for me. I was excited to get back to this storyline; to pick up where Control had left us, with the bonus context gained from Alan Wake 2. But after an hour and a half I just...wasn't feeling it. For what I believe was the first time in over 20 years of buying games on Steam, I requested a refund. I almost never give reviews, but I feel compelled to, if only just to give assurance to others who maybe feel similarly that there are other Remedy fans out there that just didn't like this one. In an attempt to articulate my feelings to the best of my ability, I'll comment on two points: Firstly, the gameplay. I'm just not a fan of this hack-and-slash style, and never have been. I thought maybe since I love the universe so much I could get through it, but after the 5th or 6th time dying to the first boss I realized that I was just not having fun. Admittedly I'm one of those weirdos who has never been interested in Souls games, and that's what it felt like to me. Bashing my head against the wall perfecting strikes and timing dodges just isn't my jam. I can’t tell if this game does it well or poorly, because I’m just not into that genre. If that's what you're into, by all means, go for it. But I'm not, and am a bit saddened that the storyline I had enjoyed so much to this point was buried beneath such mechanics. But secondly, and more importantly, is the story itself. With respect to that same boss, I had no idea _why_ I was fighting them, beyond the contrivance of it being "part of an AWE".

And everything else up to that point just felt a little off: A montage that bares some similarity to those in the first Control in which I gain half a dozen new abilities, but feels disjointed and rushed? Dialogue from characters I ostensibly know, but who seem to be speaking completely differently than I remember? Even the scraps of documents I find around The Oldest House have a different tone? What’s going on? So I looked at the credits and I believe I found, or perhaps more accurately, _didn't_ find a clue: Where's Sam Lake? I'm not seeing him mentioned anywhere. Is that it? That whole first hour and a half of plot development felt like Remedyverse fan fiction, and in a way, without Sam involved, maybe it is? The ingredients are there, but where’s the sauce that binds it together and makes it more than the sum of its parts? Maybe I should've given it more time. Maybe it’s a "skill issue”. Maybe the story improves and does the universe justice later on.
But I just know I would've played it for a couple more hours, gotten disillusioned, and the game would've just sat in my library, untouched. And every time I saw it I'd be annoyed by what could've been. I'd rather put my money where my mouth is. I'll just watch someone stream it to pick up on whatever story I'm missing, and hope the next one is more to my liking.

This was a great game. It's a breath of fresh air to play a game with an actual story, and have genuine fun. From enemy designs, to environment, and characters--Remedy nailed it (like they usually do) with their world building & narration. I can only hope people make it far enough into the game to see the other neat areas outside the city. The game isn't without set-backs, however. Thankfully, they're very few, aside from one that's a primary component of the game you can't avoid. The Good Visually, this game is (almost literally) breath-taking the amount of times I'm stopped in my tracks to take in the views. There's quite a bit of repeated geometry (obviously, especially if you're in a "patterned" environment), but it's done in a way that doesn't feel stale or old, and makes sense. More often than not, just glancing in the general direction of whatever you're heading towards tells you exactly what you're gonna encounter, along with surprises. Character-wise, I loved the writing & dialogue. The people don't (always) feel like life-less drones, and even with the random ranger AI you'll find them gossiping here & there, but not in a robotic way? It feels organic, not forced. As the game progresses and you do more for the FBC, you'll hear them finally start warming up to you.. Some of them, anyway. I find myself trying to protect the little guys (even though they get overwhelmed by enemies pretty easily). The only character I can safely say I genuinely hated from start to finish is Arish. Not sure if that's intended, or he really is just the most insufferable "big ♥♥♥♥" waving jock ever. I do wish they'd give real substance when talking to them, though. A lot of the times you're met with "well idk how it works in practice-" on repeat, and they push you away pretty quickly. Sound design was awesome as well, maybe a bit off at points, but take it with a grain of salt from someone with a bit of hearing loss. Their choice of music for the game was on point, no complaints. I also really appreciated the way they incorporated it into the game too. Outside of ambient & combat OST, music doesn't randomly start upon entering an area, normally Zoe feels obligated to "share" her music taste over the radio with you. "Depends Who You Ask" Gonna lump puzzles & level design together as this part truly does come down to personal tolerances & preferences. Overall, the puzzles are great and they DEFINITELY require a basic functioning frontal cortex. Most of the time, I was able to read the patterns or find my way around. Some truly stumped me, and after wasting 15 minutes I'd just do a quick 2 minutes Google search & move along with the story since I can't be asked to do laps in the same area endlessly. The level-design (in linear areas) is great; no complaints, and frankly hard to screw that up, let's be real. I wouldn't say I had any "issues" with the open-world layout, but it gets drastically more confusing as you play. If you thought West Incursion Zone was a mind-bend, wait til you experience the regions far below & far above. You WILL get lost, you WILL do laps, you WILL free fall into the abyss (a lot) trying to do one sketchy jump to another. The only region I genuinely found mildly agitating to navigate was the very last one. Good luck to those who make it there, you'll need it. Bring a parachute. The Bad Gameplay. Ohhh lordy the gameplay sucks. I hated the combat aspect of this game, and frankly I knew it was going to be mid at best the second I saw they chose to take the hack n' slash approach. While this approach fits & compliments the environment of the game as well as traversal very neatly, it isn't fun to defeat / encounter enemies with. The only fun aspects of the combat are the abilities, literally. If I could just fling pieces of pavement & cars at them all day, I'd do that. Makes me sad I can't at least pick up a forklift & toss it at them like Jesse could in 1.. Anyway, it's essentially combo-spam. You don't get any variety in the way you beat the life out of your opps, it's the 3-hit combo, and a "finisher." That's it. Spam it 3-4 times on everything individually and you eventually kill them. After the mid-point of the game, you truly start to audibly groan at the sight of an enemy because it's sooo boring and repetitive spamming the same combo over, and over, and over, and over... I found myself GOING OUT OF MY WAY to avoid combat when possible near the end. It was THAT exhausting for me. Lack of variety? Well, you have tons of options for weapons, finishers, and secondaries including abilities. So, why does the combat feel so bad long term? Sadly, it has to do with the way it's implemented. You aren't given any ways to mix & match combos, nor are there any unlocks for such. At BEST you're given the option to use your secondary as the 4th input to the generic 3-hit combo spam instead of using the "finisher." The only other (questionable) "downside" was the lack of super-messy environments. As someone who has fond core memories of the action-packed combat of Control 1, I loved looking back & seeing the total annihilation of the office complex after a fight. Windows blown out, or partially shattered. Broken desks, papers flying everywhere, chunks of concrete debris from most of the walls. Sad to say, you can't actually break any windows in this game aside from cars, and a lot of the action happens outside anyway. I dunno, I just miss being able to see evidence of an extensive brawl instead of everything automatically cleaning itself up as fast as it happened. I can understand why it was done this way though, especially for performance sake. Conclusion This game was definitely worth the price tag & it shows. The amount of effort put in to ensure every environment you stepped into was like entering a new realm, and more often than not, you typically were. They wrote a story that had me engrossed & intrigued enough to grit my teeth and bear the pain of enduring boring combat JUST to see the satisfying conclusion, and it had me emotional I won't lie. Overall, the game's solid. I only ask that you consider the fact it's hack n' slash instead of a shooter, and if you're expecting any depth with that system or combo mixing, you'd be mistaken.

Far fall from the first game. Dylan is an absolutely weak boring main character. Targeting system is sub par. The love for this game feels completely forced I really don’t understand the hype for this. World feels lifeless and boring. I wish I could refund this but I gave it too much credit hoping it would’ve gotten better. Combat is nothing more than a spam session, I find myself putting the controller down after about 30-40mins because of how boring the entire game, it’s a mid game at best. I’m sure some people love the game which is great but not for me.

Did you like Control? Did you like that it was a reasonably tight narrative with a reasonable map with secrets to find? Don't worry, Remedy knows you don't want any of that. Clearly, what the people want is another Ubi style open world full of towers that unlock a sea of icons to hunt. Of course, you need to do those icons to progress the zone level to level up yourself! To hell with XP, to hell with combat progression, CHECK THOSE BOXES BABY! That narrative you love from the first game? So far, nowhere to be found.. The narrative lead-in into the open world is literally "Everything is ♥♥♥♥♥♥, so you can start wherever I guess." Most NPCs you encounter just go "IDK" or whine about you being out of your cell. That's about the only narrative I've seen so far, the guy whose supposed to be in a cell isn't in a cell :O. Side narratives are mostly just "bad thing happening. bad thing fixed. yay." EDIT: In line with the lack of narrative - Without spoiling much, I've done a few of the Jesse missions now and the extent of their reactions to what's happening is basically "huh, weird." Riveting stuff. The combat is kinda fun, for like an hour. You can unlock the other weapons and they're fun, for like an hour. No nuance really, no different combos to use and mix up. Just dodging and hitting the same combo, over and over, forever. I do think the bosses look cool, but then you're back to spamming the same combo you've been spamming for hours. The enviroment is sparse and runs together. Getting the gravity upgrade was mildly interesting but now I have to grapple with more dimensions of the same generic ass street. I would refund if I could at this point, because it has been boring. I don't know who at Remedy saw how well Control did and thought "This is dumb, these players are dumb, Ubisoft had it right and we need to copy their formula!" If you liked Control, don't buy this. If you love Ubisoft, then this is probably up your alley.

First one was better, still fun. Was very easy vs the first game. Miss the mysterious objects and SCP like aspect. Way to short though for the price, buy when discounted.

If you loved the first Control, like I did, don't expect the same experience from Control: Resonant. I'm about two hours in, and I'm already seriously considering a refund. It's not the genre change that puts me off. A change of direction can work perfectly well. The problem is that the world feels bland and flat compared with the original, which sucked me in almost immediately. You get to revisit familiar places from the first game, but they feel like empty shells of what they used to be. Then there's Outworld New York, which, let's be honest, isn't exactly the prettiest city on the block. Its street layout is about as imaginative as a game of tic-tac-toe, and the whole place feels repetitive and lifeless. The combat doesn't help. It's mediocre at best, and so far there's little that makes it feel particularly satisfying or distinctive. The main character comes across more like a lapdog than someone driving the story, which makes it difficult to get invested in him. And then there's the first boss fight. It feels like something that came straight out of a generative AI's sleeve: generic, uninspired, and almost completely devoid of the strange, unsettling creativity that made the original Control so memorable. And what's up with the soundtrack? I loved the secret room in the first Control with "My Dark Disquiet" by the Finnish rock band Poets of the Fall. That moment, and the music itself, perfectly captured the weirdness and atmosphere of the game. So far, Resonant's soundtrack hasn't given me anything remotely comparable. After two hours, Control: Resonant hasn't given me much reason to keep playing. The biggest disappointment isn't that it's different from the first game. It's that it seems to have lost the atmosphere, imagination, and sense of place that made the original so compelling.

Never played a game with such an overloaded effects, enemy spam and unfun combat mechanics EVER! I'll probably force myself to play a bit more since I can't refund. Everything from dialogs, level building and enemy (variety and mechanics) is such a pain already after an hour of playing that I'm scared how frustrating it will be after 10,20,30 hours. I really struggle to find a single positive thing about this game and I'm a really enthusiastic gamer playing as many new releases as I can. The biggest issue I have is the missing visual clarity - it's a spam of effects and lightning as if I would stare into a strobe light.

I loved the original Control, so I was pretty hyped for this one. Sadly, this game is far from one I can truly recommend. I'll start with the fact that I don't like the idea that the core build of the fighting system is so broken that Remedy had to add "Assist Mode" to mitigate it. The fighting system is broken and repetitive, and sadly, using the Assist Mode just causes the game to be too easy, even after specific tweaks for all of the relevant aspects - there is no middle here, only super hard or super easy. I also can't say I got connected to the game's storyline - I have zero interest in or connection to Dylan, I don't feel like the world is interesting enough, and I just don't find myself part of this world anymore. The same goes for the exploration - using sign as guidance in the first Control game was brilliant in my opinion, but here, using the same mechanic but within an open world is just a bad design choice overall, as things are so messy and big in a way that you can very easily miss out on the turn you should take in order to get to your final destination. Add that to the fact that some of the main story content is blocked by the need to open a specific skill/ability that the game does not even tell you how to find, and you get an exploration system that causes a high level of confusion rather than making the player want to explore and find new stuff to do. The final nail in the coffin will be the game's performance. My computer is way above the recommended specs for this game, but sadly, the experience here included crashes, audio desync, and super-long loading times. I have a decent SSD. I also tried to reinstall the game twice on a different computer to make sure everything works well - the game works ok for 2-3 hours, then starts to run into issues again. A very urgent fix is needed here. I tried to request a refund for the game, but sadly, I had played for over 2 hours (the bug started after that time), so it was declined. I'm going to let this game go for now - I guess this is how things end for me with Control Resonant, and I'm very sad this is the case.
