I liked the game overall, but this is the type of game that will not work for everyone. If you are a NieR fan and/or you are ok with typical Japanese game development and writing - this is an easy buy for you. But some important things to mention: - Visually the game is pretty but for some reason in native resolution I felt like I was playing basic PS5 performance mode. But in 100+ fps with raytracing which was nice to see on UE5. - Gameplay is fire. It is a hybrid of Sekiro and modern Final Fantasy games which feels amazing, But unfortunately several main bosses have abysmal design that makes them a terrible experience. To put it simple - they are 10x times bigger than the main character with an awful and unreadable patterns. Most of the time you don't even see what the hell is going on. - There are 10-ish open zones in the game. Most of them are semi-empty fields with almost nothing to explore on it. There were 0 reasons to do that unless as I said - Japanese game dev. By the end of the game enemies also feel kinda repetative. - Writing is... unstable. The story itself and characters around it are great. But the game is filled with filler dialogues, unnecessary acts and also 3 times almost in a row you get a monologue from different characters explaining you the most important info about the whole world . I still enjoyed it but again if you are not used to this kind of writing you would for certain feel bored and/or won't like it at all. TLDR: Some gamers will call this a masterpiece and some will probably be disappointed mostly because they are not the target audience.

I gave this game an honest shot and was actually having a pretty fun time during the first 10 hours, but there are so many issues with this game that all combined makes it impossible to recommend. - Lack of game settings. The game defaults to FSR1, there is no FSR 4.1 (or even 3.1), the DLSS is a severely outdated 3.7, there is no DLAA/Native resolution option for the upscaling, there is no Frame Gen option, there is no option for film grain or volumetric fog which is forced upon you unless you create your own Engine.ini file, there is no FOV slider and the deafult FOV is arguably way too narrow, there are no subtitle size options, no dynamic HUD option, no HUD scale option, no full screen option, no other Ray Tracing options other than on/off, no option to disable the camera speed acceleration (the camera starts moving faster the longer you hold down your analog stick on your controller), no color/saturation options to fix the washed out colors. - Visually the game looks rough, and the textures feel like something you'd find in an old Nintendo game. Really low resolution textures, jagged edges, huge "shadow boxes", and the blacks look grey. Colors look really washed out, also the same as you'd find in an old Nintendo game. It just looks sorta blurry, flat, grey and washed out. - Performance isn't great, despite the rough visuals. FPS dips and stutters will occur throughout the entire game. - Some actions share button inputs with no option to separate them. You jump and interact with things using the same button, which means you will jump at times when you want to interact with something and you will interact with something when you want to jump. Eventually this gets incredibly frustrating. - There's like 3-4 songs in the entire OST. The songs are quite nice but you get really tired of hearing them over and over again as you play for 20+ hours. - For the dialogues and story the pacing is so incredibly bad. Each character speak slowly, then there is a pause for anywhere between 2-10 seconds before the next character speaks. Rinse and repeat for hours upon hours of dialogue that moves the story forward in a snail's pace. The same things will be said over and over again, and there is no option to skip most of these cutscenes. Your only option is to advance the dialogue by pressing X on your controller, but that doesn't always work either because before the next line of dialogue is played it still has to wait for the duration of that first line to finish and you can only skip the current line of dialogue being played which means you can't "spam skip" through a lengthy dialogue with no substance. - Story sadly goes from interesting to disappointing as you close in on the ending. Towards the end of it the game dumps all essential lore on you within 10 minutes through audio recordings made by one of the characters. It's such an incredibly lazy and boring way to present the story. Overall the presentation of the story is just terrible, with multiple flashbacks to different times in the past. The writing is also very odd, but maybe it's lost in translation a bit since I played with English voice acting instead of the Japanese one. - There are no side quests or side characters you will stumble upon and help. There is no incentive to explore the open world as the only rewards you will get are currency or upgrade materials. You won't stumble upon something interesting - EVER. - Character models are really stiff. Some animations such as Emma's jogging or crouch walking animation look hilariously bad. - The enemy variety is god awful. You will have seen 99% of enemies within the first 5 hours of the game, and then these enemies will basically be the only enemies you fight for the rest of the game. - The boss variety is honestly insulting. The very first boss you fight in chapter 1 will also be the main boss for a later chapter. The same will be true for the other chapter bosses too. You will fight the same boss atleast 2 times, with some being fought I think close to 10 times by the end of it. And this is MAIN STORY BOSSES, it's not optional content. - Everytime Koo discovers something in the world he will bark, and then Emma will comment on it. The same interaction will happen hundreds of times throughout the game with zero variation. - In combat, everytime you want to use a Koo skill Emma will say "Koo" the exact same way each and every time. This becomes annoying incredibly fast, and there is no way to disable this. - In combat, as soon as you max out on the resource used by Koo your trusty "spirit companion" Violet will say "Remember to use Koo's skills too", without fail. She ALWAYS does this throughout the entire game. It doesn't matter if you are in the middle of an enemies attack string where you actually don't have time to use Koo's skills without it interrupting your parry, she will still remind you to use Koo's skills. You can't disable this. She also backseats you if you take too much damage, telling you to be careful and learning the enemy moves. It ends up feeling like she's mocking you as she tells you this for the 20th time against the same type of enemy you have fought since chapter 1. - If you have the pre-order bonus that changes Koo's fur you will be sad to learn this doesn't affect cutscenes. Koo and Emma will always use the "default skin" in all cutscenes. - There are different armours you can find in the world, but none of them change the look of Emma's outfit. You can't customize Emma's outfit in any way other than removing her hat, which again still reappears during all cutscenes. - There are some trinkets/charms you can equip to Emma and Koo that gives them slight buffs, but after the first 5-10 hours you stop caring about them as they don't change or evolve past that point. - The only thing that changes between different swords is the look of the weapon and what temporary buff you gain from it for when you successfully parry an enemy attack. Base damage remains almost entirely the same between all swords. - Ranged weapons include a bow and a crossbow, but their damage is so low they end up being close to useless in combat. By the end of the game you end up forgetting they even exist. - There are some bugs that can happen where your character gets teleported X amount of distance away from the enemy. It makes no sense and looks really janky, and can just reset the combat entirely if you get teleported far enough. Despite this really lengthy list I am convinced I missed a lot of negatives. Asking 55€ for this game is insulting. I honestly would hesitate to recommend this game even if it was free to play. I have no history with these devs and never played their Pokemon games, but it's clear to me they're not competent enough to pull off a game like Beast of Reincarnation in a satisfactory way. Any future projects from GAME FREAK I will likely avoid. Don't waste your time and money playing this, unless you can get it for free and literally have nothing else to play.

Is the game bad? No. Are there a lot of questionable decisions? Yes. I'd wait for a discount. The game recommends Cinematic Mode (cutscenes locked to 24 fps; turn it off. It's super janky) and some options turned on by default are pretty bad. Depth of Field causes a lot of artifacts when trying to place things into focus and is better off disabled. There's plenty of other tweaking to preference you may end up doing in the settings. The biggest offender at the moment is the camera. Weirdly closed in can't really be changed. Does not work well for giant fights. I'm sure nexus mods have many tweaks and fixes available now for people who are badly bothered by it. Other than that the combat starts off basic but your later skills provide a lot of additional movesets and it does get fun. I do appreciate that skills are tied to your stats just because it kind of forces people to not braindead dump into strength and instead choose a build to preference. Music is really good as well. Art direction is fantastic. Definitely Nier automata vibes. There's a lot of patches that will assuredly come in and fix some issues, worst case nexus mod will fix said issues if just much earlier than gamefreak will. Just wait for a discount. -- Edit: It seems the game is being brigaded with a lot of nonsense and very little is actually being talked about the game so I'd like to add some information that I figure may be helpful. - It's not a souls game, it does have parrying mechanics but with later skills the parrying almost becomes a suggestion. It's best to treat it like a jrpg. There are a lot of story heavy moments and you'll probably get called back to base often to progress rapport with your team mates often but if you're into that you're going to like this game. - The world is apocalyptic. One of the complaints I see often is the game isn't alive and full of npcs to the level of grand theft auto. If you aren't of mind to explore a world that keeps getting its civilization wiped out by an angry poodle of some sort every 100 years then you're going to have a bad time. - I personally think the story has been very engaging. Yes, the character is dull. That's a part of the story. There is growth in that regard. I love it. There's so much mystery thrown out at you and you look up and you'll have even more questions. It's got me hooked. - The combat is dull and stiff if you choose to make it dull and stiff. That is the default, you keep that kind of combo if you're going to be a level 1 purist. Build into vitality and start learning to throw that hair back and forth and get those aerial combos in and you're going to have a lot of fun. Or build into strength and raise that gauge for chain combos. Or just focus on your gun. You have options and none of them are bad, unless you want to be a level 1 purist like all these negative reviews I guess. On an additional note I find parrying to be very responsive and on point. I love the satisfaction of getting that wild 5 hit combo down in rhythm from some of the later deranged mobs. Dodging Red * skills is extremely forgiving and much easier to do than working with the parry system. I think they got the combat locked down very well. - There seems to be consistent negative reviews that the game doesn't look hyperrealistic as there should be a required expectation that they cannot discern reality from between the game and their mom's bedroom. From my personal experience with my attached specs I run it highest 60fps perfectly fine with graphics similar to ff7 remake/rebirth/clair obscur. I did have to tweak settings including turning depth of field off because it didn't just blur out of focus objects, it made in focus objects janky and pixelated. It just doesn't work. The camera is an issue they need to fix, that's as far as negativity goes for graphics. Gameplay I find is still fine even with the semi-booty locked camera. Let me be clear: If you're expecting elden ring 2 or gta 6 then you're going to have a bad time. If you're expecting a lightweight sekiro/nier automata that you have to screw around in settings a bit with then you're going to love this game. Story's great and it's been an atmospheric trip so far. It's a shame it's stuck in the 50% range at the time of this review because I honestly believe this game is not getting fair representation but I suppose it was bound to happen.

Wait for a ton of patches and a 50% price cut. Combat feels unrewarding and uninspired, guarding and parrying are very inconsistent and sword impacts feel like a dry pool noodle. World feels empty and lifeless for the most part, few robots here a few there and a few animals. Ran into a bug fighting an elite enemy after using Koo's ability threw me across the map and healed the boss to full. You might say well just go fight him again... NO you go fight him again I'm not dealing with this silliness. All in all it feels like a TEMU Stellar Blade for a AAA price. Really the best thing I can say about the game is it ran pretty well and the graphics weren't super bad but that's debatable depending on who you ask. 4/10

So after finally completing Beast Of Reincarnation, this game barely and i mean BARELY gets a positive rating. Steam has no inbetween rating so I want to make it clear this game is directly smack in the middle in terms of a rating. Let me explain. Pros: Graphics: The game is very nice looking. It has its moments where it has weird texture glitches and looks a little blurry, but overall its a very nice looking game. Nothing super exceptional, but definitely not anything bad. The world itself is interesting to look at and explore, beautiful buildings, nature etc. Music: The music in the game is pretty good. Its pretty obvious they are going for the stellar blade vibe with the sound track, especially the camp music and overall world ambience. You will notice it almost immediately. The battle music is very good and overall its pretty decent soundtrack. Gameplay: This game takes a long time to ramp up and unlock a bunch of stuff, but once you do it is very very good. The battle system is well done, multiple enemy weaknesses to exploit and strategize around. Different combos and skills similiar to DMC to unlock and use that all do different things. Once you unlock a lot of the skills combat really gets fantastic. Koo provides some extra strategizing, using koo's abilities with your own to create combos and openings to exploit. Theres weapon upgrades, both ranged and melee, food cooking etc. The gameplay is solid, it just takes a while to get there, which is why this review is a middle review. Weapons: There is a ton of weapons/swords in this game. Gamefreak essentially took their elemental system behind pokemon and instead of multiple pokemon of different types, you get multiple swords of different types. Lightning, fire, poison, etc. Each with their pros and cons. Some swords even combine "types", very similiar to multi type pokemon. You can see the inspiration. Cons: Very little enemy variety: I am not kidding when I say you will be fighting the same enemies the entire game. There is so few enemy variety, you can see gamefreak decided to utilize their famous copy and paste skills here. It gets extremely boring very quickly. What makes it worse, is these enemies do the same moves over and over. Different melee enemies? All pretty much have the same mechanics. You memorize all of it very quickly and before you know it, enemies become a joke very early on. Repeat Bosses: The bosses in this game are a joke. When you have other games like stellar blade, souls games, even the recent mortal shell 2...all these bosses are epic, with varied different skill sets and THIS game bosses do the SAME ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ MOVES over and over. And when i say moves, i am saying 1 or 2 moves max for most of them. Not only that, they want to extend the nushi bosses as much as possible, so alot of them run when you first fight them, making you have to fight them again. New round? Nothing changes. Same moves. One nushi I fought, I am not kidding, did the same tail swipe and ONLY the same tail swipe, the ENTIRE fight. The SAME ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ TAIL SWIPE. Over and over and over and over, till it died. These nushi are basically bigger versions of regular mobs. It is so uninspired, so boring and overall extremely disappointing. The games story bosses, based on characters in the game, are way better done HOWEVER, are still bosses that repeat the same 2-3 moves over and over and over again until death. It was a massive let down. These bosses are some of the most pathetic designed bosses Ive ever seen for a game like this. Extremely stiff movement: This game has extremely stiff movement to the point where you can literally feel how trapped you are. It is not smooth whatsoever. When you explore the world the amount of times you are caught on terrain, glitch moving after landing because you hit a corner, its pretty bad. Stellar blade had stiff movement, but nowhere near like this. Camera pre patch: The game released with one of the worst cameras ive seen for a game like this. They finally somewhat fixed it in a recent patch, but releasing the game with a super zoomed in camera like they did, with the speed this game is trying to achieve, was a massive design overlook and im glad they somewhat addressed it. It's not perfect, but the patch did help. Random Puddle Deaths: The game has very shallow creeks and such in the world to explore, but apparently stepping in random parts of those creeks, means you fall into the atlantic ocean apparently and die/reset....yeah i dont get it. Story: The game has very interesting premises and a pretty interesting world building that happens over 13 chapters. However, it takes extremely long for it to get anywhere (I wasnt interested till chapter 9) and then once it finally starts to get interesting, it falls on its face at the end as to the reasoning why all of this is happening. I just kind of face palmed at that point. Overall Beast Of Reincarnation is a extremely mid experience that barely gets a pass into positive due to the late game combat, builds and experience overall. I am extremely disappointed in this game and really felt like it could have been so much better, This is a literal 5/10 for me. Extremely mid and extremely average with just enough to say on steams review rating "yes", but with a extreme caveat of...wait for a mega sale on this game and then your money will be worth it. Thanks for reading.

Looks far more ambitious than it actually plays. I waited for a long time, and so far it feels like a budget AA game wearing expensive graphics and being sold far too close to AAA pricing. The art direction can be striking. The giant walking house is genuinely cool, the world has some strange ideas, and technically it runs well for me at native 4K60 with ray tracing on but RT is weird here. Unfortunately, once I stopped staring at the scenery and actually played it, the cracks appeared quickly. Combat feels flat and repetitive. I played on Hard, so enemies can kill you quickly, but higher damage does not make a shallow combat system deeper. Koo’s abilities constantly interrupt the flow, turning fights into repeated stop-and-start menus instead of something naturally tactical. Maybe more skills appear later, but the basic rhythm already feels awkward. Exploration is weak, movement feels restrictive, and the camps placement is awkward. The controller camera is painfully slow even at maximum sensitivity. Keyboard and mouse support is also half-baked, including not allowing normal binding of Mouse 4 and Mouse 5. Neither control method feels properly finished. The music barely leaves an impression, and Emma feels strangely empty and i assume it must be something with the lore and story? There are interesting concepts here, but the gameplay, exploration, controls, music, and general presentation feel much cheaper than the price suggests. I kept waiting for the game shown in the trailers to appear, but so far I am playing something far flatter and more repetitive. Maybe after major patches or a deep discount. Genuinely unsure about refunding.

If Beast of Reincarnation had an honest subtitle, it would literally just be called 7 Out of 10: The Game. Except honestly? It’s worse than that. I’m sitting at Chapter 7, around 20 hours in, and those 20 hours have felt like an absolute eternity. When a game makes time drag that hard, you know something is fundamentally broken. The most mind-boggling thing right off the bat is the sound design or total lack thereof. You hire legendary composers like Kow Otani (Shadow of the Colossus) and Cris Velasco, and then... one single ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ song plays across the entire game. I am losing my mind. I’ve explored at least 8 gigantic, completely empty "beta looking UE5" zones, and every single one has the exact same enemies, the exact same loot boxes full of the exact same trash, and that same single ambient track looping endlessly into my brain. Then you look at the skill system. You have a literal skill tree that is constantly blooming with new skills and Blade Arts. You keep unlocking stuff, but none of it feels impactful or good to get. Progression means nothing because you can literally just spam basic ranged bolts at enemies or bosses and watch them drop. And don't get me started on the combat mechanics. I consider myself good at Sekiro and Souls type games, I love parrying games and deflection systems, so this isn't a "get gud" issue; the game is just horribly designed. There’s supposed to be a core parry system, but it doesn't work because enemy attacks are relentless, badly telegraphed, and obscured by horrible visual artifacts, blinking lights, and glitchy UE5 lighting effects that simply should not be there. Some of the flora assets looks fine, which it better, given flowers are the whole theme of the game, but the performance and lighting are all over the place. The absolute worst part, though? The combat system actively fights itself. The game gives you all these flashy combos and special moves, but you can’t actually use them. Either an enemy interrupts your absurdly long animation, or they die way before you can even get a combo off. And if you do manage to stagger an enemy, which is supposed to be the main mechanic to set up your big moves as the standard attack button automatically triggers a lethal riposte that insta-kills them on the spot. Because you only have one main attack button, the second an enemy is staggered, the game steals your controls and forces an execution. You literally cannot unleash the big combos the tree gives you. It tries to be Nier, Shadow of the Colossus, and Pokémon all at once, but nothing works. Nothing feels good. It’s like the developers never heard of killing OR lovingly raising their darlings, leaving behind a total and complete mess. Supposedly there’s 13 chapters, which means I’m only halfway through, and despite like 12 patches already, it still feels completely empty and unpolished. There is buried potential somewhere in here, but in its current state, it’s just infuriating.

So I rarely write reviews, but so far, I genuinely do not understand the negativity towards this game at all. Most reviews I have seen are around 1.3-1.7 hours in, which is not even the end of the first chapter. It feels like people are running around the very first area and expecting 30 different enemies, a fully fleshed-out build, and a masterpiece of a story. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course, being around 12 hours in and reading some of the reviews, I was wondering if we were even playing the same game. So here's a little overview from someone currently in Chapter 3 (and who is pretty thorough while exploring): Right now, I'd say the game sits at a decent 7/10: The good: - The music is comfy and a whole vibe (very reminiscent of NieR, in my opinion ). - The combat feels fluid and fun; it is very "Sekiro -esque" and relies quite a bit on parries. The parry timings are pretty forgiving for the most part, though - Unlocking the different skills has been fun, and there seems to be quite a lot of build variety (with a focus on balance, status effects, a more "defensive" approach, or overall more damage) - Koo adds a *lot* to the team because he notifies you of discoveries, picks up items (an ability), can heal you, taunt, and cause status effects on enemies, etc. You can even tell him to run ahead and one-shot weak mobs so they are out of your way. - I LOVE the traversing system in this game so far. The more you play, the better Emma's hair "roots" feel, and traveling fast from A to B and up and down is easy - The story is intriguing so far. It reminds me of a mix of Princess Mononoke and NieR: Automata. The game clearly takes inspiration from a few different games and other media and overall keeps me engaged and interested to find out more about (little spoilers ahead) the "crescent moon," Violet, and what the Beast of Reincarnation's intentions are - The world (building) looks beautiful. While the game is not as stunning as Death Stranding 2 or Resident Evil: Requiem graphics wise, its art direction and the maps so far have been fun to explore and fit into the post- apocalyptic theme - Performance is good. HOWEVER , if you have the specs, I would definitely recommend not having the cutscenes on "cinematic" (24fps) since they tend to look choppy, which they didn't anymore once I turned them to native The bad: - The recovery/healing system is my biggest gripe/complaint about the game so far: it takes FOREVER to heal , and I feel like I have to press the button several times. I *think* this is because immediately after a hit, there might be a slight cooldown for the vials, but since the game doesn't really tell you this, it just feels super random and awkward in the otherwise so fluid gameplay - I also do not like the UI design of the health bar. Since after a hit, there is this "recovery" period during which you can get a portion of your health back, sometimes while glancing at the health bar mid-combat, I cannot tell if I have 4/5 of my health left or if I'll die with the next hit-usually, the latter happens - The dialogue : it...is...sooooo...slow. Like REALLY slow. The voice acting is good , but the dialogue has these awkward pauses for almost all the characters, and sometimes I wish they would just talk a *little* faster. For people saying Emma seems "emotionless however, " her being "bland" and devoid of emotion is literally explained in the first chapter of the game - There are some QoL tweaks missing. For example , if you buy multiple items at a merchant, you HAVE TO confirm and click through all of the items popping up when you purchased them, or when a chest has multiple items in it, you have no "loot all" option. You have to click every single item, and from a loot goblin perspective it sucks and is so outdated So, all in all, the game is not perfect, but it is fun, and for it being the first of its type from Game Freak, I was actually surprised at the quality and feel of it. If you are unsure but interested in the game, you can either play it over Game Pass or wait for it to be on sale. I think the game is worth forming your own opinion on.

I just finished Beast of Reincarnation after around 26 hours. I still plan to go for 100% completion and replay it on the new difficulty, but I'll probably wait for a few patches before doing so. First of all, I want to make something clear: Beast of Reincarnation is nowhere near as bad as some people on social media make it out to be. Does it have issues? Absolutely. Quite a few, actually. But it's definitely not a bad game. Its biggest strength, in my opinion, is its story. It becomes more and more captivating as you progress through the chapters, especially after a certain "turning point" around Chapter 7 or 8. From that point onward, I became much more invested in what was happening, and some moments genuinely hit me emotionally, all the way to an epilogue that I found really satisfying. And thank God this isn't an open-world game, because i honestly might not have finished it otherwise. I think the more linear, zone-based structure used by games like Stellar Blade or Black Myth: Wukong fits this kind of experience much better. It keeps the game moving forward without filling the world with unnecessary distractions. The gameplay is also very enjoyable and gradually gets better as you progress. As you unlock more options and get used to its systems, combat becomes much more satisfying. That being said, there are definitely some negatives. Performance-wise, the game ran very well for me, but visually it's a bit inconsistent. It can look really nice at times, but there are noticeable texture issues in some environments, and certain areas could have used a lot more polish. The soundtrack was also a slight disappointment for me. It's not bad, but considering the game's setting and atmosphere, I expected something much more memorable. There isn't enough variety, and some tracks loop a little too much for my taste. The bosses are probably one of my biggest disappointments. Most of them are pretty underwhelming, especially because many have what is technically a second phase, but their patterns barely change. You expect the fight to evolve and become more challenging, but most of the time... it just doesn't. As a result, the challenge is almost nonexistent. Beast of Reincarnation really isn't a difficult game in that regard. The enemy variety is also fairly limited, and some of the areas feel like they could have been much more polished and developed. Basically, if you start looking for flaws, you'll definitely find plenty of things that could have been improved. But considering this is Game Freak's first attempt at this kind of game, I'm still satisfied with the result. My overall feeling after finishing it is that I genuinely loved my time with Beast of Reincarnation despite its flaws. I think the story carries a lot of the experience for me, but it carried it well enough that I ended up becoming much more attached to the game than I expected. If I'm being critical, I'd give it a solid **6.5/10**. Despite its issues, I still recommend giving Beast of Reincarnation a chance. It's far from perfect, but the journey, and especially its story, is an experience worth having.

A mix of Sekiro parrying and Nier/Stellar Blade. When comparing Beast to these past games (which I also love), people seem to forget how bad the combat could be at times, how empty those worlds were themselves, or even the "repetitive" fights. It only seems to be an issue for this game. Some "issues" I would argue against (while playing hard mode and on a controller): -Little to no monster variation Dudes landed in the first area and made a negative review. No ♥♥♥♥ there's the same monsters in the same area. They haven't come close to finishing Chapter 1 (out of 13 per google ), and are already complaining. As of this review, 3.6% of players have the achievement for beating the Chapter 2 boss. There's a lot of game left. -Same music for the whole game Music literally changes per zone. Same as Nier. Don't see anyone complaining about it for that game. Another case of landing in the first area and complaining. -No English dub / Cinematic fps locked It's in the settings dawg. First time? -We have to fight bosses multiple times / boss fights are too long :( Ever heard of phases? Reincarnation is also in the game name, in case you missed it. Git gud applies here. -Clunky/floaty combat I'm convinced people say clunky when they don't know how to describe gameplay. It's lazy af. Combat feels fast, fluid and responsive. It does what I want it to do. You're ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ right it's "floaty," a few of the strong attack skills require you to be in the air, but I know these mfers haven't gotten that far. I still think Nioh has the best combat for a soulslike, but this game is on the same ground as it's comparisons. There is a choice between story, normal, or hard mode. That said, if you pick hard mode, you will have to parry. Some actual concerns: -Optimization and monitor settings I haven't had these issues myself given my pc specs, but the game may run poorly depending on your setup. Also many complaints of the lack of ultra-wide monitor support. With my setup, I am at 100 fps on the highest settings, capped at 100 due to personal preference. -Weird character textures in menu This is a minor issue, but you will notice the difference in graphics while using the menu. -Lack of character customization As far as I know, the only appearances you can change are the character's hat and the wolf. -Wolf combat camera Using the wolf's skills forces you to watch from the same camera angle every time, never in another direction of a fight. This includes moments where that camera would be right next to a wall. Things I liked: -Little to no handholding After the tutorial, the game throws you into the first zone with a lot of new things unlocked. You are able to go around anywhere and even delay the first quest. The rest of the tutorial is tucked away in the menu. -Movement Movement is definitely a strong suit in this game, with a lot of freedom thanks to the seamless jump boost and bridge mechanics. The jump boost mechanic might be my favorite kind of "double jump" in any game I've played. Getting around is quick and easy. You can explore and get rewarded with potentially skipping some sections or finding items/discoveries. -Quick run-backs Up to now, there have always been checkpoints before a boss. The run-backs are painless, with 1-2 seconds of loading up after dying. -Combat transitions Finishing moves, specials, wolf skills and other abilities are quick and seamless with one another. There is a lot you can do if you're quick enough. There is no "turn-based" combat like people think - the wolf skills just slow the game down while you choose an attack, followed by a QTE for extra damage, though the QTEs could be more varied. Final Thoughts There are a lot of bad reviews going off 1 hr or less of playing time, or even the hate for the Game Freak itself. I agree with the thinking that Nintendo and Pokemon have become pretty bad these days, but this game is low key a hidden gem. Definitely not as bad as the reviews make it seem. Anytime someone says "this game rips off ___," guess what, all those games ripped off the OG Demon's Souls, which was probably inspired by something else itself.

An Important Game in the Modern Era Beast of Reincarnation is what I'd call a polished 'AA' experience. In an ecosystem were we continue to push the boundaries and budgets of massive projects that take a decade to come to fruition, and GTAVI looming around the corner I think it's good to test our tastes against a game that is imperfect in so many ways. This is a 3 out of 5 game. Is that bad? No. Not really. But we've lost a lot of nuance in speaking about games online that it really comes across to people like it is. No one wants to release a 3/5 anymore. Every studio wants to throw up 4/5 and 5/5 games; endlessly spending billions of dollars on bloated products that all end up being the exact same thing over and over again. Meant to appeal to absolutely as many people as possible -- games made in a lab by focus groups and shareholder meetings. Beast of Reincarnation sucks in so many different ways, but I kind of like it for that. It can't hide it's flaws behind it's budget like other games can. It's raw in a way that feels real. The draw distance looks about as good as a switch game on a PC maxed out, there is exactly one song I've been listening to ad nauseum for 4 hours, the enemy variety is bad, the first boss in the game doesn't even have a real intro to the fight you just drop down into his arena from the sky, and he has exactly one move which is shaking his head at you aggressively, the animations don't all blend well together, and the explorable areas are empty with useless rewards. I think it's got it's heart in the right place, though. Beast of Reincarnation is it's own thing. You'll see a lot of people throw around the obvious comparisons of Nier and Stellar Blade, but it's not really either of those games. It's not quite Sekiro, FF7R, Wild Hearts, or Pokemon either. It shares similarities with those games, and it'd be easy to say that it's inspired by these things, but I'd say it's really it's own thing. The combat has it's moments, and controlling Koo and Emma together feel intuitive. I like both of the main character's designs, and I enjoy the contemplative nature of the story thus far. The traversal mechanics are unique, and I've enjoyed playing with the hair bridges and grapple hook. So what? The reality is that all of the games people like to compare this game to also suck in all the ways this one does, too. The difference is they have the budget to paint over all of their problems so people don't notice. The combat in Nier and Stellar Blade are just as bland if not moreso. They're both button mashers. Stellar Blade practically screams at you to follow it's simon says combat with color coded attacks that make you do flashy things when you respond properly to it's explicit instructions. A little dopamine hit for playing the game the way it forces you to, rather than the being a freeform expression of skill. Emma's ass isn't as fat as Eve's or 2Bs, and you can't change her outfit or blow off her clothes. They waste just as much of your time as this game does they're just better at jingling the keys. Beast of Reincarnation doesn't even bother doing that. This game is absolutely so shameless and I love it for that reason. It's a $40-50 game with a $60 price tag. I have complaints about this game but this is the only real one that would make me recommend against picking it for someone on the fence about it. Otherwise I think it's worth experiencing. We've lost a lot of the language necessary in the current gaming ecosystem to talk about games like this. I.e. the issue of referring to everything as 'soulslike', or assigning every singular mechanic to one form of game in order to neatly describe them without further thought. This game doesn't meet the standards of the modern AAA experience, but why should it? Those games suck too, they just hide the jank under a coat of graphical/horny/spectacle-colored paint. Maybe Beast of Reincarnation sucks, but I think that's alright.

Get it on deep discount folks This is not a bad game by any means, but I think a few setbacks make the full price hard to justify for most people. First of all, combat is easily my favorite part of the game. Game Freak really deliver here. The combat is fun, responsive, and feels great to play. This isn't a Soulslike, so there's no real punishment for dying. It's much more action focused, with consecutive parry mechanics that remind me a lot of Sekiro, plenty of move combinations, and even some QTE style moves from our companion, Koo. I honestly have very few complaints about the combat. Exploration is another strong point. There's a good sense of discovery, and finding things while exploring actually feels rewarding. The traversal system is also fun, and the whole concept of a pos t apocalyptic Japan is pretty intriguing. Unfortunately, the level design doesn't really live up to that concept. A lot of the environments feel boring, repetitive and uninspired, and the lack of enemy variety makes things worse. You fight the same enemies with basically the same movesets over and over again. Even the bosses end up feeling pretty bland and underwhelming. From a technical perspective, I didn't have any major performance issues, but the visuals definitely don't live up to the hype. The game look noticeably blurry, and the camera positioning can be pretty awkward at times. The recent patches have improved things, though, so it's definitely better than it was at launch. The biggest disappointment for me was the story. The storytelling is honestly pretty weak. The Japanese voice acting is good, but the cutscenes, dialogue, and animations don't really do justice to the performances. I never really had that "Wow, that was epic" moment during any of the major cutscenes. Even some of the sequences in the early hours reminded me of Stellar Blade, but unfortunately they never reached that same level of impact. The protagonist being so emotionally flat doesn't help either. The plot itself is also quite slow, especially early on, which makes it difficult to find a reason to keep pushing forward. That said, I did appreciate the overall message of the story, and there are some interesting twists toward the epilogue. Overall, while the graphics aren't particularly spectacular, the characters aren't that engaging, and the narrative and gameplay loop can become repetitive over time, I still appreciate what the developers were trying to do here. It's clear that Game Freak was trying to explore something different, and despite all its rough edges, I had a good time with it. If you're willing to overlook its shortcomings and experience the game on its own terms, there's definitely something here to enjoy. Just don't pay full price. I'd recommend picking it up at around 30-50% off.

I was genuinely excited for this game as I loved Wild Hearts aesthetic and souls likes are my favourite genre, but this game is genuinely a 3/10 for me and all 3 are for graphics and looks. The game feels clunky, the camera is far too zoomed in with no FOV setting that I could find, the enemies are bland facing 3 elites which all had the same exact moveset. The first boss had literally 1 move that it used on repeat. The enemy ai is extremely exploitable and all combat encounters outside of elites in the open world can be trivialized by simply hovering above enemies and stealth killing them instantly. Worst of all is there's so much going on mechanically and basically no tutorials for any of the mechanics or features that might actually warrant them, the tutorials end at Press B to run or Press RB to swing. The game is trying to do way too much, while giving you no foothold to even get immersed into the world because it just tosses you into the deep end with somehow less initial lore than Souls games. Such a shame because I was really looking forward to this game, and this basically just confirmed to me that the problem with the Pokemon games after Gen 5 probably stem from Game Freak themselves.

I’ll be completely honest: what first drew me to this game was its artwork, and the fact that it was developed by Game Freak, a studio mostly known for making Pokemon games for Nintendo. It also happened to release around my birthday, so I pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition without hesitation as a birthday present to myself. That said, this game is filled with both things I genuinely like and things that disappointed me. I’ll try to explain in as much detail as possible how I honestly feel about it. I really like the lore and worldbuilding. The concept of combining trees, flowers, and robots in a ruined world is genuinely fascinating, and there is a surprisingly deep background behind everything. Unfortunately, the storytelling lets most of that potential down. The pacing is extremely slow, and the character writing is weak. And I mean almost every character. That is especially frustrating because the character designs themselves are excellent, and many of them seem genuinely interesting. But some characters are brought into scenes with very little narrative justification, almost as if the writers were afraid they would go too long without having a role, so they gave them something to do whether it really made sense or not.. Most of the dialogue is also painfully slow. I understand that the protagonist, Emma, is supposed to be a very quiet and emotionally reserved person who struggles to express herself, but somehow it feels like everyone else caught the same lethargy from her. Some characters who should have been charismatic end up feeling strangely bland because of this. Kunai is probably the biggest example for me. She really deserved more interesting material. I’m not sure whether the cutscene team carried too many habits over from Pokémon, or whether they thought they were making a manga instead of a game. The camera composition during cutscenes is actually very good, but the scenes themselves barely flow at all. It feels like an old RPG where the scene stops, the camera changes, then everything stops again while a character talks. I kept imagining that if you simply divided these shots into panels and added speech bubbles, they could almost be turned directly into manga pages. As a result, scenes that are clearly supposed to feel cinematic simply do not feel cinematic at all. And we are talking about a game from a major studio here, not a tiny indie project made by two or three people. Some indie games manage to handle cinematic presentation considerably better than this. Now for the gameplay. I actually had quite a lot of fun with the combat during the early part of the game. It is not bad at all. I would not call it amazing, but it works. The problem is that after a certain point -- around Chapter 3, in my experience, the repetition becomes increasingly obvious. Almost every enemy, including minibosses, starts feeling like a recolored version of something you have already fought, except with higher damage and more health. Mechanically, very little changes. There simply is not enough enemy variety. Because of that, side quests quickly lose their appeal, because you already know that you will probably end up fighting the same things again. The rewards are not particularly exciting either. Even rare treasure chests stop being interesting because they usually contain resources you can already obtain elsewhere, just in larger quantities. One thing I found particularly ugly, and something I really do not think belongs in a modern game, was encountering a major area boss that was essentially reused. Even its cutscene was recycled. That was genuinely disappointing. The sword and skill systems are also somewhat strange. A sword’s special ability only becomes active after performing a parry, and then you only have a limited window of several dozen seconds to use it. Because of this, some swords feel unnecessarily awkward to use. On the other hand, I really like how the combat abilities incorporate different Japanese flowers and plants. I already love plants and flowers in general, so aesthetically this system works very well for me. One of the most frustrating parts of the entire game, however, is the parrying. The problem is that the parry itself does not feel particularly good either. Its response feels inconsistent, and parrying while being caught inside an enemy combo can be extremely difficult. Sometimes the input feels delayed enough that I fail a parry even though I am fairly sure I pressed it at the correct moment. I actually reinstalled Sekiro just to make sure I was not imagining things. The level design is good. Not incredible, but definitely good. Some areas can feel a little maze-like, but exploration is usually rewarded, which I appreciate. Unfortunately, the day-night system hurts the atmosphere quite a bit. You can visibly watch the sunlight move across the environment at an unnaturally fast speed, and an entire day can pass without there even being a proper nighttime period. It looks very strange. You can sometimes notice the same weirdness during cutscenes as well. There is one more thing I absolutely have to mention. It sounds minor, but it became unbelievably annoying. Koo is incredibly annoying. It feels as if the AI is programmed to remain directly beside the player at all times. It does not matter where you are or how narrow the area is—Koo will always try to squeeze itself right next to you. It does not wander around naturally. It does not wait somewhere nearby. It just follows you constantly. Koo is also huge, so it constantly blocks the scenery, and the dusty visual effect whenever it teleports back to your position becomes irritating very quickly. Game Freak, please consider updating its behavior. Let Koo wander around a little. Make it come back when we call it. Or give me a Poke Ball so I can put it away for a while. Even just allowing Koo to stay at camp when I am only going out to farm materials would already make a huge difference. That being said, Koo is actually extremely strong and useful in combat. It hits hard, its skills deal significant damage, it can disrupt enemies, it can perform stealth attacks, and once properly leveled you can practically send it into battle like a Pokemon. As a companion, Koo is genuinely useful. It is just... incredibly annoying to have constantly glued to my side. Overall, I think this is a very ambitious game. It combines ideas from many different games, and I can clearly feel influences from Sekiro, Nier, Stellar Blade, and even Pokémon. And borrowing and combining ideas is not inherently a bad thing. In fact, it is how some genuinely interesting new ideas are created, and this game has some excellent artistic concepts as a result. However, I think the development team may still be too attached to older game-design habits, or perhaps too influenced by the way Pokémon games have traditionally been made. There may also be a little too much confidence in their own established design philosophy. Game Freak needs to study what other games in this genre are doing, particularly when it comes to storytelling, cinematic presentation, and certain aspects of combat. Because this is Beast of Reincarnation, not Pokemon. And they also need to consider what kind of players they are trying to sell this game to. The audience interested in this kind of game has already played titles such as Elden Ring, Sekiro, Nier, Assassin’s Creed, Resident Evil, Death Stranding, Metal Gear, and many other games with extremely polished animation, combat, and cinematic presentation. So I am not surprised at all that some of those players are disappointed with this game. Despite all of that, I genuinely hope Game Freak makes another game like this. I believe they are moving in the right direction, even if they still seem a little lost along the way. I will be waiting to see what they make next. Even if it ends up being Beast of Reincarnation 2.

Tbh, the only way I would recommend this game is if it’s on sale for €10–15. The game really feels like it was made by Game Freak because of the laziness in pretty much every aspect. LOCATIONS — 1/10 The first thing that actually bored me and made me rush through the game was the environments. It literally feels like you’re stuck in limbo, in the same place, for like 20 hours of the game. The game tells you you’re in a new location, but it’s literally the same as all the others: same structures, same flowers, same enemies, same “secrets.” There’s basically no change of scenery until the very end of the game, and even that is somehow worse than the areas before it. The only cool place is the room where you fight the second-to-last boss. ENEMIES / BOSSES — 2/10 The laziness of the game also shows in the bosses. You basically fight the same bosses like three times in different locations. Almost all of them are recycled with different skins but the exact same movesets. They all have a P2 which is literally the same as P1. It’s basically just an aesthetic change. BUT the worst of them all is this random dude who thinks he’s the GOAT, but literally loses 20 times in a row and still thinks he’s actually doing something. You literally have to fight this guy and his useless Pokémon like 8 times, and you don’t know a single thing about him. Then, only when he dies, you find out that he just wants his sister back, and you’ll be like: “Who tf cares?” Because he’s literally just a random guy. There’s no explanation about anything during the other 7 times you fight him. It’s just him being: “Ah! Ah! I’ll kill you!!” STORY/CHARACTERS — 6/10 As for the story, there’s nothing particularly special about it either. The game tells you basically nothing for the first 20 hours. You won’t understand what’s going on until the last hour of gameplay, where everything gets explained all at once, like a tornado of information being thrown directly into your face. I didn’t like a single character other than Kagura, even though she talks TOOOOOOOO MUCH. I liked Emma and her “evolution,” but even then, it didn’t really make me feel many emotions. I definitely hated Violet. I found her completely boring and useless. GAMEPLAY — 8/10 The one thing I actually had fun with was the gameplay. The mechanics are cool and visually they look good. BUT there’s also a problem here: the game is way too simple. It’s literally so easy to learn and play. Maybe it’s because the enemies and bosses are all basically the same, so most of the time you already know what to expect and what to do. But still, I found myself almost at the end of the game just “oneshotting” everything with an Art combo. Still, the gameplay is the only reason I kept playing the game until the end, i actually enjoyed it and had fun. MUSIC — 2/10 I won’t talk much about the music because there’s not much to say. It’s basically the same song for 20 hours, and at some point you’ll just be praying for it to stop in the next level. It will... eventually...

Let's address the elephant in the room right off the bat. Are you a BIG Nier fan like myself? If yes, buy it and you will not let the negative things deter you from very much enjoying this game. If you are not a Neir fan, continue reading and I'll give you the biggest cons this game has. 1. Visuals. This is NOT an ugly game. It does, however, suffer from some very poor graphics options. Chief among them being the way that lighting is handled. No matter what setting you use, this game will have absolutely abysmal light bleeding. This makes dark areas have blinding bright spots in places like corners or areas outside the render culling distance. It does not really become a big issue until much later in the game thankfully, but it is ever present. 2. Camera. There is no way around being honest about how poor the camera can behave in this game. The default position is far too low and close to the character. There is NO FOV slider to mention in any of the settings at the time of writing this. This compounds into being even more problematic when fighting large bosses or groups of enemies. The camera just is not your friend. I grew up in the early days of 3D gaming so there is a slightly above average level of tolerance for things like this in my case. 3. Story. The story presentation in this game just does not flow well. If it had been organized in a better way, things could be really good. It has interesting ideas. It just doesn't know how to portray them without using typical vague cutscenes to falsely preserve a big "reveal" at the end. I have seen some reviews talking about how emotionless or stale many of the characters feel. There is 100% a canonical reason for this, but like my previous point, the narrative uses cheap ways to hold back information from the player. There are many conversations in this game that simply serve no purpose. If you are still here trying to see why I gave this game a thumbs up, this is it. It's fun. The music is fantastic. The combat, despite the camera woes, is a blast. I am a Nier fan. You do not have to be a fan of the Nier universe to like this. If you made it through the list of cons above and still want to play it, it's well worth the asking price.

I'm kinda pissed that this game has been unfairly buried by negative reviews, most of which are just nonsense. If you have functioning hands and your brain actually works, you'll most likely be able to change the graphics settings to make the game look good. And if you're the kind of graphics elitist who thinks anything below Cyberpunk-level visuals looks like some hideous game from 2010, then maybe you should just stay away from the review button altogether. As for the game itself, it's not an industry masterpiece. It's simply a good game in its genre. Yes, it has its flaws, but they don't make it a bad game. And considering how much games cost these days, this one is actually pretty affordable for 20+ hours of content. I genuinely think it's worth giving it a chance and forming your own opinion instead of relying on the reviews.
