Sorry if my review ends up being a little long, but I hope you’ll read it all. Well, I should probably start with a little misunderstanding…, I had never actually played Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, which is rather ironic, considering that it is precisely the kind of game I should have played years ago, I work in history and archaeology, with a particular specialization in the societies and historical dynamics of Alaska and the North Pacific, so questions of maritime mobility, territorial occupation, material culture, and the circulation of goods are very much within my field of interest, yet, for one reason or another, I simply never had the opportunity to experience the original game, Black Flag Resynced finally gave me the excuse to correct that omission, and after spending time with it, I can understand much more clearly why this particular entry in the series has retained such a strong reputation, what immediately interested me was not necessarily the presence of historical figures or the game's attempt to reproduce every detail of the eighteenth century accurately, what I found much more compelling was the way the game constructs a historical space through maritime geography, that distinction matters A historical reconstruction is not necessarily successful because it contains an enormous quantity of individually accurate details, It can also be successful when it manages to reproduce broader historical dynamics, patterns of movement, economic dependency, territorial organization, technological constraints, and the circulation of people and commodities, from that perspective, Black Flag is remarkably effective, the sea is never simply an empty space between points of interest. It functions as an actual transportation infrastructure, islands, ports, commercial routes, naval encounters, and different territorial scales create a dynamic geographical environment in which movement itself becomes part of the gameplay, this was probably the aspect I appreciated the most As someone who studies the historical societies of Alaska and the North Pacific, I am particularly interested in the way maritime environments can function not as barriers, but as corridors, interfaces, and spaces of interaction, obviously, I am not suggesting that the Caribbean world represented in Black Flag can be directly compared with the historical realities of Alaska, the ecological, cultural, political, and economic contexts are radically different, but the underlying principle is surprisingly comparable, historical spaces are often better understood through the movements occurring within them than through the political borders we impose on them afterward, the naval gameplay is another particularly interesting example of the compromise between simulation and accessibility, the game obviously does not attempt to reproduce the full technical complexity of historical sailing vessels, real navigation involved an enormous number of variables, hull design, draft, rigging configuration, hydrodynamic resistance, wind conditions, crew organization, visibility, currents, cargo distribution, and countless other factors that would be completely impractical to reproduce in an action adventure game Yet Black Flag incorporates just enough of these principles to create the impression that the player's vessel is actually operating within a physical environment, wind direction, speed, positioning, turning radius, weapon placement, and relative movement all contribute to the experience. Naval combat consequently becomes more than simply pointing a cannon at another ship and firing, positioning often matters more than raw firepower, that is a surprisingly good abstraction of the underlying logic of naval warfare, the boarding mechanics are obviously heavily dramatized, but I still appreciated their emphasis on materiality, wooden decks, rigging, firearms, blades, cannons, ropes, and the physical presence of the crew all contribute to a sense that combat is taking place within a tangible technological environment, this is particularly interesting from an archaeological perspective, maritime archaeology constantly deals with this relationship between technology, material culture, and human behavior. A ship is never simply a vehicle, it is a complex technological system reflecting economic priorities, military requirements, available resources, shipbuilding traditions, and the organization of the people operating it, Black Flag obviously simplifies all of this enormously, but it nevertheless manages to communicate something that many historical games fail to convey, technology shapes behavior I would never consider Black Flag a historical source in the academic sense, of course, the game simplifies social structures, piracy, political institutions, economic relationships, and the material conditions of eighteenth-century life, chronology is compressed, historical personalities are adapted to the narrative, and numerous elements are deliberately exaggerated, but I don't think that is necessarily a weakness, the more interesting question is whether these historical liberties destroy the internal coherence of the world being represented, for me, they don't The game establishes a sufficiently coherent fictional interpretation of maritime mobility, commerce, violence, exploration, and political instability that the historical atmosphere remains convincing even when the underlying details are obviously stylized, I also found Edward Kenway's progression interesting from this perspective, his story touches, sometimes indirectly, on several historical phenomena associated with maritime societies: economic opportunism, social mobility, accumulation of wealth, shifting loyalties, private violence, and the gradual integration of individuals into political and commercial networks much larger than themselves, again, these ideas are not unique to the Caribbean When studying the history of Alaska and the wider North Pacific, one quickly learns that political borders are often a poor starting point for understanding historical interaction, people, technologies, commodities, information, and cultural practices moved across enormous distances according to networks that frequently had little relationship to the borders that would later appear on modern maps, that is one of the reasons I found the structure of Black Flag so satisfying, the game makes movement itself meaningful, you are not merely travelling from one mission marker to another, you are learning a maritime landscape, gradually understanding its routes, its dangers, its economic opportunities, and its strategic geography, the world becomes legible through repeated movement, that is excellent game design, and this is ultimately why I am so glad Resynced gave me the opportunity to finally experience Black Flag, I had wanted to play the original for years, I simply never had the opportunity, and somehow it remained one of those games I kept postponing, coming to it now through Resynced feels almost like discovering a historical artifact several years after everyone else has already written about it, I finally understand the reputation, It is obviously not a scholarly reconstruction, and it would be unreasonable to evaluate it according to the standards of academic historiography or archaeological research, but as a fictional representation of a maritime world, as an exploration game, and especially as a playable interpretation of mobility, territory, technology, and circulation, Black Flag is remarkably successful For anyone interested in material culture, maritime archaeology, historical geography, or the way human societies organize themselves around networks of movement, there is considerably more going on here than the simple premise of "pirates and assassins" might suggest, my only real regret is that I didn't play the original sooner, fortunately, Resynced gave me the opportunity to finally step aboard, excellent discovery, better late than never :)

Even More Boring Than Before Visuals The only reason I bought Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Resynced was because I wanted a colorful game to play on my OLED monitor. I have to admit, the game looks beautiful. The tropical islands, the sea and the vibrant colors really pop on an OLED display. That's where my praise ends. Gameplay The original Black Flag was already one of the most boring Assassin's Creed games I've played. Somehow, Ubisoft managed to make this version even more boring. The combat feels terrible. It has almost no impact, the animations look stiff and outdated, and most fights are literally just mashing one button over and over again until everything dies. There is almost no skill involved, no challenge and no satisfaction. It gets old incredibly fast. The enemies are braindead, the stealth is extremely basic, and the parkour almost plays itself. After a few hours you've already seen everything the game has to offer. Nothing evolves. Nothing surprises you. The naval combat is still the strongest part of the game, but even that becomes repetitive after a while. There is only so much fun you can have doing the exact same ship battles over and over again. Mission design is honestly one of the worst parts of the game. Half the missions are following people, tailing ships, eavesdropping or doing some other boring scripted activity. Ubisoft somehow managed to make being a pirate feel like a chore. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3807207067 Open World The open world is very big, but there is barely anything worth exploring. It's another Ubisoft checklist full of collectibles, repetitive side content and meaningless fetch quests. Ubisoft has always confused having more content with having better content, and Black Flag is one of the biggest examples of that. The game constantly wastes your time instead of giving you interesting things to do. It somehow feels even longer than it already is. Story The story is the usual Ubisoft slop. Edward Kenway is a meh protagonist, and I couldn't care less about anything happening around him. The pacing is terrible, most characters are forgettable, and the voice acting is as bland as ever. There is so much filler between the few decent moments that I completely stopped caring about the story. Final Thoughts As much as Mirage wasn't an amazing game, at least it actually felt like an Assassin's Creed game. More importantly, it respected my time. It lasted around 15 hours and didn't try to stretch itself into a repetitive adventure full of filler. I'd replay Mirage before touching Black Flag again. I genuinely don't understand why so many people call this one of Ubisoft's best games. I thought the original Black Flag was boring, and somehow Ubisoft managed to make this version even more boring, longer, and worse to play. The only thing I'll remember from Black Flag Resynced is how good it looked on my OLED monitor. BROKEN MEDAL Follow My Curator Page For More Reviews ⚜️

Game is good. Ubisoft sucks. Can't play offline at all. When the internet goes out, game does not work because the Ubisoft launcher. The game also just randomly doesn't open due to Ubisoft launcher failing to authenticate it. Gotta launch it like 4 times before it opens. It's easier being a pirate. In the game, of course.

NOT RECOMMENDED — unless Ubisoft restores the missing combat mechanics from the original game. I really wanted to recommend Black Flag Resynced. Visually, this game is absolutely gorgeous. The environments, lighting, water, character detail, and overall presentation are fantastic. Seeing Black Flag brought to life with modern graphics is something I have wanted for years. But a remake should not look better while giving the player LESS freedom than the 2013 game. Some of the most memorable combat mechanics from the original Black Flag have simply been removed. You cannot freely equip and fight with the Hidden Blades anymore. You cannot freely switch to hand-to-hand combat anymore. You cannot disarm enemies and take their weapons. You cannot pick up muskets and use them against enemies. You cannot pick up heavy axes and other dropped weapons. And because those weapons are gone, many of the unique attacks, finishers, and takedown animations associated with them are gone too. These were not meaningless little details. They were part of what made Edward Kenway feel like Edward Kenway. In the original game, I could enter a fight bare-handed, disarm an enemy, take his weapon, kill another guard with it, throw it away, grab a musket, fire it, use that musket in melee combat, then switch to my Hidden Blades and continue fighting. That freedom was part of Black Flag's identity. Now I'm largely being told: use your swords. That is not an upgrade. And hearing that these features were considered a lower priority during development is extremely disappointing. This game is remaking a title from 2013. We've waited more than a decade. I would have gladly waited longer if it meant getting a complete remake that preserved the iconic mechanics of the original instead of cutting them to meet a release schedule. Ubisoft has said, "We can't make any promises [but] we're listening to the community." At this point, that statement rings hollow to me. If you're genuinely listening, then listen to the players asking for these mechanics to return. Don't just acknowledge the feedback. Please actually address it. Restore: • Selectable Hidden Blade combat • Selectable hand-to-hand/unarmed combat • Enemy disarming • Picking up dropped enemy weapons • Muskets as usable ranged AND melee weapons • Heavy weapons and axes • The unique combat and takedown animations associated with those weapons The frustrating thing is that underneath all of this, I LIKE Resynced. It looks incredible. There is clearly a huge amount of work here, and visually this is the Black Flag remake I wanted. But I cannot recommend a remake that removes this much combat freedom from the game it's supposed to be improving. For now, my review is NOT RECOMMENDED. If Ubisoft restores these iconic mechanics from the original Black Flag, I will gladly come back and change this review to Recommended. The foundation for an incredible remake is already here. Please finish it.

Somehow my game got linked to a random Ubisoft account that isn't mine. I literally can't play the game because I don't have access to that account. I was able to play for about 9 hours, and then whoever owned that Ubisoft account must have unlinked it or changed something, because I suddenly lost access. I contacted Steam, but since I had already played for 9 hours, they refused to issue a refund. Ubisoft wasn't any help either—they basically told me to go away, even though I have proof that I purchased the game and that it was somehow linked to a random Ubisoft account that doesn't belong to me. So, 1/10. I spent my money on a game that I can't even play. P.S some people are trying to say that oo its your fault you connected to wrong Ubi Account. How? I have 1 o repeat 1 Ubi account that's all. I have no idea whose account i got connected to. And to Ubi-Relic I tried all that you advised me to do. and i have been told by Ubisoft customer support to go buy a new copy of a game because there is nothing they can do. Problem is i bought a copy of the game. why it connected to what ever account not my fault.

no matter how many years pass, Black Flag will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart. i still remember playing it 13 years ago when it first came out. i replayed it again a few years later, and now here i am finishing it 100% for the fourth time with Resynced. somehow, it still hits almost exactly the same as it did back then. there’s just something about the pirate atmosphere in this game. sailing through the open ocean, hearing the waves, listening to the crew sing shanties while the sun is setting over the Caribbean… nothing else really feels like it. and the characters are just as memorable. edward kenway’s story is still one of my fav in gaming. i genuinely can’t skip the cutscenes, even after playing the game this many times. the dialogue, the friendships, the arguments, all of it feels like it actually matters. to me, Black Flag is way more than just a game. it’s nostalgia, memories, and a lot of emotion all mixed together. and that ending still gets me every single time, especially when you think about the whole journey and everyone who was left behind. 10/10. a timeless masterpiece. i honestly don’t care how many new AC games come out. nothing is ever going to replace this one for me.

Resynced is not bad if you ignore the new added content. Going from the story you loved since 2013 with mocapped cutscenes and good dialogue, few tweaks here and there with missions and gameplay while having no modern day sequences (depends on the player tbh, for me personally I never cared for those). And then you move on to the brand new added content, which will make you feel insane cause it will remind you real quick how lazy and unoriginal modern ubisoft has become.

Played assassins creed 1 way back, so figured it would be fun to play this since I've heard good things. Bought the game and it's forcing me to create a ubisoft account. Trying to create an account keeps causing an error. Honestly, I'm ticked off by the very fact I need to create a second account to play a steam game I already paid for. So forget it, immediate refund and I'm not playing another ubisoft game going forward. People shouldn't need to jump through hoops just to play a single player game they purchased.

Don't buy this game at full price. It's *fine*. It's not a *bad* game. The gameplay is fun, they did a great job with that. But unless you're deaf, there's a significant problem with this game: the voice acting. Every Assassin's Creed release in the last decade, at least, has been guilty of neglecting the voice acting. It's not that the voice actors themselves are bad; on the contrary, they have done a great job. With what they were given. It's just clear that they were given very limited context when recording their lines, if any at all. I suspect they were just given a list of lines to speak and that's it. They often sound very weird in the context of the game, such as emphasizing the wrong word in a sentence. Or the voice being all happy when the situation is very dramatic. And it is VERY obvious that the actors are not in a room together. The dialogue is god-awful. Conversations flow horribly, there's zero chemistry between the voices, every other line sounds completely out of place. It's not *as* bad as some other recent titles, such as Odyssey, but holy fk is it obvious that they cut corners on the dialogue in this one also. It is very difficult to suspend your disbelief when every time you hear a voice, you are reminded that it's just a lone bloke in a recording studio reading lines off a piece of paper, without any context whatsoever. It's just baffling. The earlier Assassin's Creed titles were great at this. AC2 in in particular really made you feel something, it was like a movie. But this ..... it's frankly insulting. Not just to the customer, but to the voice actors. They deserved better than this. Don't buy this game at full price. Ubisoft doesn't deserve that. The disrespectful corporate decision makers should frankly be publicly shamed in the town square pillory, but lacking that, buying it only on sale will have to do. Again, the rest of the game is great. The graphics look wonderful even on my aging 2080. The combat is fun, both at sea and hand-to-hand. The devs themselves have done a fantastic job and i don't think i could ask any more of them. But jfc, Corporate made the voice acting absolutely terrible. I cringe all the time.

Leave this game, Johnny, leave it.
