Good game ? Yes. Would I reccommend it ? Yes. But it has it's flaws ? Also yes. Things why you should play: * Very good story, myterious and it's slowly revealing, not cliche. * There are some good hit mechanics, you feel that you hit enemy and dodging feels fun (at first) * There is both parry and block mechanic * There are so many different classes instead of just 3-4 old main rpg classes like mage-warrior-assasin. * Animations are okay. * Some of the side quests are really cool, it's not like just go and kill this, they're nice and interesting. Things which has bothered me (does not have to bother you but probably will): * Dodging mechanic is a bit broken and op, reducing fights into dodge dodge dodge because why would you try to risk parrying or why would you block when you can easily dodge ? * You can almost dodge forever, maybe also i played mage, dodge dodge, firebolt, dodge dodge firebolt feels a bit clunky after a while. * Shield spell is not good enough to make you stop using dodge plus why would you use shield when you can dodge free * Conjuration is cool at first but later it gets keep conjuring 321312 times to defeat a boss. * Map is cool but not great. It doesn't have good details, mostly simple. * Interior design is ok but not great, gets a bit repetitive. * At last map with snowy part, it's a bit hard to travel, I know this was probably an intended design choice, where they could simply made easier to travel but I just don't like spending 30 min to find a single giant's location. * Enemies are bulletsponges most of the time but if they were not, this game would have ended much more quickly, and it's also challenging so it may be nice or bad depending how you look. as for me it's kinda ok. It was good overall, but i couldn't finish the game due to me getting bored after a while but don't take this as a game is bad, i am a bit weak on the patience side. if you like these type of games, it's 6/10 or so. Worth of buying and playing.

Самый полезный отзыв ветерана (10+ ч на момент отзыва)I remember picking up this game back in 2023. It was charming, but pretty rough around the edges. A lot of input from the community and budding voice actors/artists/writers trying to contribute to something fresh and new: to cut their teeth and build their skills and portfolio. Why a game would then turn around and spit on all those people and cut corners with AI art, icons, and writing is simply beyond me. The fact that they refuse to add a disclosure to the Steam page (despite this being repeatedly pointed out) is just salt in the wound. They know what they're doing is a slap in the face to the community and people who originally supported this project, and they will do anything in their power to keep that fact buried. What a disappointment.

Alright. Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is done and dusted. My playtime weighed in right at 66.6 hours, which I appreciate, lol. You know, I expected this to be heavily inspired by the Elder Scrolls games, which it is. What I didn't expect was for it to also be heavily inspired by FromSoft Souls games. Which it is. THAT was a pleasant surprise and derailed my expectations in a totally positive manner. It also obviously leans fully into Arthurian legend, but with a greater gravitas than you would see in the fairy tale versions, instead leaning into the 'real-world where things go desperately wrong' versions of Arthurian legend (but with dark fantasy elements mixed). And let me tell you: that trio of influences works incredibly well IMO. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3727492649 Something that I thought was very cool from a writing perspective is that anything can and potentially will be viewed as a deity by people if they are desperate or isolated enough to know no different. A lesson this game teaches is that great power, while it can definitely be viewed as necessarily godly, is really just greater power than normal beings possess. It can be timeless in its recounting, and beings can be immortal (in this game anyway), but ultimately, they have just tapped into a greater well of power than most can even conceive of. Thus, ensuring their deification, whether or not the beings deified actually wish that for themselves. There are many instances of this in the game, and it really mirrors many of my own thoughts towards religion. Anyway, the story centers around you, a random person afflicted with the Red Death. You wake up in a cell on a remote island run by priests who allegedly are trying to help people afflicted with the Red Death before their minds waste away and they essentially become undead. Someone creeps into this prison and frees you, leaving you to actually find your way out by following the path of death left in his wake. And finally, upon leaving the prison, you will travel together back to the mainland. However, on the way out, you find a piece of King Arthur's soul, which cures you of the Red Death and sets in motion really everything that follows in this game. I thought this starter area was super creepy, a bit scary and kind of challenging altogether. Once you get to the mainland, Avalon (which I take to be Ireland), the game really gets underway, and it gets actually even more creepy and scary. You really don't know much about this world yet, but the corruption of the Red Death is present. But even more pervasive is the Wyrdness, a magical presence which fills the land after dark, changes those it comes into contact with, and is generally a hostile force. Which means that anytime you are out at night, you will be dealing with a pervasive evil. The cities on Avalon are all protected from the Wyrdness by the Menhir, which are basically large magical statues that create borders the Wyrdness can't penetrate, thus creating safe zones at night. However, the Wyrdness can also be combatted in a smaller area via special cobwebs that can be found at night and/or on the bodies of Wyrd-touched enemies. Burning them at a bonfire will provide a small safe zone to rest in. At the beginning of the game, the evocative, blood driven areas and enemies can seem pretty daunting and terrifying. I certainly had no small amount of trepidation exploring for those first hours. Which is also justified because you really aren't very capable at all to begin the game, and while fair, most things in the world can definitely kill you. Or weaken you enough to where its buddy can finish you off, lol. However, by the end of the game, you will be the baddest mofo on Avalon by a wide margin, and that's even with the game's level scaling, which really can't keep pace with almost any build and equipment set. Much less the Elder Scrolls style menu pausing where you can consume as many potions and as much food as you like at any moment, lol. Actually, I'd say that by about hour twenty, the only thing really killing me was me falling off of cliffs and such. :) There are three regions in the main game, which also work as the game's three acts. You need to finish the primary quests in each region to unlock the next and that in turn unlocks the next Act. There is a fourth region and epilogue style act which can be had if you own the Sanctuary of Sarras expansion. Although I personally recommend playing that expansion after completing Act Two. It'll give you some gear and crafting goods that can really help you with Act Three. And it'll be a little bit more challenging than if you wait until you're almost done with the base game. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3725040194 So, what about those Soulsborne influences? For one, the parry and dash system in this game is definitely Soulsborne inspired. Easier, but still inspired by the Souls series. Dash replaces rolling, but yeah. Additionally, the imagery, boss designs, and the somber storytelling for many of the quests all reflect a deep love for FromSoft's own methodology with those three things. You may or may not notice it at first, but it will for sure become apparent as you start working through some of the darker questlines in the game. As far as builds go, I played as a stealth archer. However, even without stealth, this was an aces build. The dash system really makes it possible to just run in as an archer and still be totally successful. Dash is probably a bit overpowered as a gameplay mechanic, but it's also hella fun. I did also have some melee weapons I'd switch to when I was getting bored of archer-ing the ♥♥♥♥ out of enemies, lol. And that was also incredibly fun. My stat building was mostly focused on Dexterity/Endurance/Perception, but I boosted the other stats by the end as well so I could access other types of gear. Gear (weapons and armor) has stats restrictions. Like, you need 8 Dex and 6 Practicality to use this item, 16 End and 12 Str to use that item. There are amazing items for pretty much every build. I did notice there are more items with Spirituality rankings than any other type of item, but yeah, the sky is the limit here. Gear really does impact your playthrough. Speaking of story, this game has much better writing than any Elder Scrolls game. I'm actually quite impressed with how the writers managed to keep track of the various story arcs and tie everything together. It's a very engaging story, even if it does have some weak moments, which it does. Visually, this game is a hero's banquet. It's everything it should be and more. It definitely leans on the evocative darkness of two pervasive evils in a land that really has never known true peace. The audio is also spectacular. Combat sounds amazing. The general sounds of the world are believable. The voice acting is also incredibly well done. In the more classic Souls style quite often. And then it flips and becomes pretty cheeky in other moments, lol. Which can be said of the story as well. Some of the death animations are hilarious, btw. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3727910970 The only issue I had was also the most annoying one possible. It freezes on repeat. It only crashed once, but the constant freezing can test your patience. Ultimately, I feel this is a must play if you enjoy WRPGs. It's one of the best ones out there. Definitely worth a look. If you found this review helpful and would be interested in supporting my Curator group, Robilar's Reviews, it would be appreciated. Cheers. Also follow IndieGems for more reviews like this one.

Let´s just get it out of the way: this is either a sincere love letter to Bethesda, or a clone, depending on your perspective. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's been quite a while since I finished a game, I generally don't have a lot of time for gaming anymore, but I gave this a shot on a sale, and it just hooked me. It's definitely not a technical show case, the graphics are nice, and the art direction is great, but if you put this side by side with something like Crimson Desert, it's not going to win that matchup. What it does excel at is world building and story telling. I've always enjoyed Arthurian legends, and this is a unique, darker take on that. I really wanted to see where the story went, and I stuck with it. I have no complaints about the combat, weapons, armor, magic, or anything else. There were some minor issues with enemy and summon pathing, but it didn't detract from the fun at all for me. If you enjoy the Bethesda formula, you're going to feel right at home, and you´ll probably love the game.

Good, but not great Graphics and Visuals (9/10) The graphics look a bit outdated, but the visuals really pull everything together-the graphics, the animations, basically everything related to the game’s appearance. It’s stylish, unique, and conveys a sense of gloom and hopelessness. Music (9/10) I personally liked the music in the menu, though I admit it’s an acquired taste. The English voice acting is good, and the in-game music is good too-you can even add some of the tracks to your playlist. Story (7/10) The premise seems interesting, and you find yourself following the plot-it’s dark fantasy. But still, there’s no real depth to it. The narrative drags, and toward the end of the game, it even gets a little tedious to keep up with everything-I started skipping dialogues and such. I’m not sure if it’s the story or the gameplay that’s the problem. Overall, the game drags toward the end and starts to get boring. Gameplay (8/10) At first, it’s just a blast. A full-fledged, stylish first-person RPG-it’s been a long time since we’ve seen a quality product like this. Probably not since Skyrim. But right from the start, you notice some minor rough edges. For example, monsters fly away when hit by an arrow, like mannequins. There’s no sense of impact, and it doesn’t matter whether you’re wielding a sword or a bow. There’s no sense of high-quality combat. It’s just primitive, that’s all. But the leveling up is a joy-there are tons of skills and builds, plus plenty of gear for different builds. There’s a huge variety of armor and weapons in the game. And everything looks absolutely stunning. Plus, you can customize the appearance of any piece of armor. For example, if you find a helmet with critical hits but it looks super dull and doesn’t match your outfit, you just head to the blacksmith and change its look. You can put together some really beautiful sets. I also like that skill points come pouring in, and you can spend them however you want. I just kept my skill points as-is until I saw a check in a dialogue (which rarely happens) or requirements for weapons or armor (which happen often). Then you reallocate the points to the stats you need. There’s a lot of freedom in skill allocation here. And it’s hard to end up with stats in the wrong places. Then again, if you’re not really sure what you’re doing, there’s alchemy and potions-you can reset all your stats. There are also hidden skill trees that unlock after completing certain quests. I didn’t come across any spoilers, so I was sometimes pleasantly surprised when, after a quest, I was given a new skill tree to unlock. You can even build a character around that. Overall, it’s all pretty fun. Cons: The combat isn’t very engaging; it’s not interesting to hack at or shoot monsters, and there’s no sense of impact when arrows hit or weapons strike. Add to that the overleveling toward the end of the game, and it becomes downright boring. In theory, the story should carry the game. But it didn’t hook me. Final score: 8.25-I’ll throw in an extra 0.25 of my own. I’ve beaten the game and will definitely play through it again someday. The game does have its downsides, but on the other hand, there’s room for improvement. If they make a sequel, they could make it even better. The main thing is that it shouldn’t drag on as much, and the narrative shouldn’t lose steam toward the end of the game. I highly recommend it to everyone.

The game is basically The Outer Worlds but in a heavily tweaked King Arthur setting. It kind of plays like an Elder Scrolls game but doesn't have it's signature open world. THE GOOD Character system. Takes everything I liked about Souls series and Skyrim. Combat system. I especially loved that melee enemies have attacks with built-in feints and sidesteps, feels like a casual version of Chivalry and Mordhau. Weapons and Armor design - good enough for people to do Fashion Grail and ask for drip checks on reddit. Game lore and world ambience. Some locations feel like Souls, some like Skyrim. Music. THE BAD Enemies are damage sponges that hit like a truck because you're expected to play glass cannon mode and avoid most of the damage with dash, parry and side-step. Just like always in these games, crafting is absolutely overpowered, and therefore completely mandatory. Random fps drops in several locations, not too many but it's a thing. THE UGLY Game feels incomplete, as if reading the first book of a grand saga, but the saga was cancelled and the author suddenly wrapped it up. Nightfall mechanic. The idea is cool, but in practice it's a completely unnecessary repetitive hassle with meager rewards that I just preferred to skip. Item socket mechanic. Cool idea, undercooked implementation. The power and variety of socketables are so so, and for some arcane reason most socketables are limited issue (can't be grinded or crafted). It's a tough game to play without the wiki due to how cornerstone the gear can be in this game, at the same time being either well hidden or permamently missable due to picking incorrect quest resolution. Game favors magic classes in terms of content. Magic items are abundant and impactful, and magic stat is overrepresented in dialogue skillchecks. Dialogues with NPCs are heavily leaning into quantity over quality. Made me wish for "stfu and give me the quest if you got any" button. Thievery is disappointing and might as well not be there. Inhabitants of Avalon are just dirt poor and only have some pocket money and cabbage, regardless of their social status. Alchemy is also disappoiting. Lack of interesting non-standard potions, fun things like weapon coating and throwable flasks happen to be horribly undertuned. Guilds were so-so. They are unnecessarily well hidden, lacking in services and the quest chain is literally just a quest chain rather than a small sidestory with it's own thrill and suspense. Lack of some necessary QoL like corpse markers. Spending a couple minutes looking for a corpse that was ragdolled in a tall grass isn't fun. Overall it really shows that it's a very ambitious project that was held back by tight budget. Hopefully one day we'll see a sequel.

This game delivers exactly what I always wanted in Skyrim: - Locational Damage: It’s actually here and it works. - Archery: One-shot bow kills are possible! At a certain level of progression, you can take down enemies with just 1 or 2 arrows. Headshots are rewarding and deadly. - Combat: The one-handed spear is the ultimate weapon compared to the sword. It feels incredibly satisfying and joyful to use. Writing and World: - NPC interactions feel incredibly well-written. - The level of character elaboration and depth reminds me of Enderal. What I’m sad about: - Mounts: Horses are as slow as they were in Skyrim. - Animations: The combat and movement feel clunky; they lack a sense of weight and inertia. - Visual Consistency: The fairytale-like, whimsical design of some NPCs, enemies, and pets feels out of place in such a dark and gritty world. It creates a tonal clash with the grim atmosphere.

The game's not great, and it's very unpolished. I can see the vision, but the execution is just not there for me. I played about 18 hours before I couldn't bear to continue any longer. Pretty much everything about the game is rough. The story genuinely falls off a cliff in act 2. The dialogue is very slow and uninteresting. One of the few games I've played along with Starfield where i started skipping thru dialogue and just reading the subtitles because its so boring. I stopped playing most of the way thru act 2 and I have no clue what the story is trying to do. The combat is mediocre. It doesn't feel that great to fight anything, and its terribly unbalanced. On a normal difficulty, you'll steamroll some enemies, and others in the same region literally annihilate you, and seem damn near impossible to fight unless you're perfect. I tried different classes but I found one handed weapons to just not deal enough damage to the bulletsponge enemies, bows were too clunky to be my main weapons, and magic isn't even possible to give a fair shot unless you dedicate a ton of skill points into it first. I ended up using two handed most of the time. The game is also rough on the technical side. It looks kinda ugly in a lot of scenes, the animations are stiff, and apparently a lot of textures, dialogue, and other aspects are AI generated. Its also buggy and runs like ♥♥♥♥ on top of that. Overall, I found Tainted Grail to be pretty monotonous, uninteresting, and tedious. It's very apparent this game was made on a small budget, and while I admire the ambition, it's too big for its own good.

An RPG in a similar vein to Elder Scrolls - fun, janky, with some excellent storytelling. Tainted Grail has you playing as a stranger. Just like Oblivion, you start by escaping a jail, though this one is an island prison run by the Red Priests. They're trying to find the cure for the Red Plague by... torturing people? 600 years prior, King Arthur fled to Avalon (Ireland) because the Red Plague ravished the mainland (England). Now, you find a fragment of Arthur's soul when escaping, thrusting you in a quest to put him back together across Avalon as it crumbles. Gameplay-wise, Tainted Grail wears its RPG inspirations on its sleeve. First person, two hands for two weapons, knights, magic, constellation tech trees, etc. If you've enjoyed RPGs like Oblivion and Skyrim, you'll feel right at home. Heck, I'm not a huge fan of those games, and I enjoyed it! Graphics are lovely without turning your computer into an oven. Music was alright. Some tracks stood out for me, and others were fairly mundane. Nowhere near Skyrim levels, but enough to set the scene. The story was great, as were the little bits of worldbuilding dotted about. Avalon is in a grimdark decay - lots of death and tragedy - and many quests feel weighty with their burdens. There was little black and white in each decision to make, and even the ones where it was obvious who the bad guy was, they provided some interesting arguments! It's worth going back to NPCs a little after completing their quests. Some have repercussions you'd otherwise not notice. The writing has a sense of humour too. It is a dark world, yet you can find such fun things as a spell to transform people into cheese, a husband who turned into a pig and quite likes it, and a sword that complains as you use it. I love it when a world has whimsical extras hidden within! It wasn't all perfectly perfect though. The balance seemed all over the place. Some bosses seemed incredibly hard, others easy peasy. Early on was especially uncertain. Had a few moments where quests didn't fully load properly, and characters wouldn't talk to me. Loading one of the autosaves usually fixed it. There are a bunch of missable achievements if you're an achievement hunter. I found it somewhat disappointing to beat the game, check the achievements, and find I was locked out of the fun-looking ones. I'll also mention I did the areas in this order: 1, 2, DLC, 3. I think I would have enjoyed the 3rd area more if I hadn't done the DLC, as by then I felt the game had outstayed its welcome. But the DLC was great, so I'm torn about whether I recommend doing the DLC first, or leaving it till post-game. But besides them, this was a brilliant game.

The game is pretty good, for the first few hours. Positive first: The controls feel pretty good, the atmosphere is very nice in a lot of places and i enjoy the many different types of weapons and armor. I do feel like this is a step up from Skyrim when it comes to gameplay (for the 1st act, at least) I also enjoyed the dungeons (in act 1) as they reminded me of MMO dungeons. Negative: During the later half of the 2nd act the game loses steam and becomes quite tedious. Endless fetch and talk quests with not very well written characters. The 3rd act was so jarring, that i never even bothered to finish the game. It's hard to describe, but it feels like washing the dishes and once you think you're done, someone dumps another tray of dirty dishes infront of you. The only enjoyment you have is thinking that you have finished washing the dishes, but it just keeps going and the washing itself is not fun anymore. In fact, i would rather be washing my dishes right now. Anyway, the main reason why i give this game a negative review is because is has very obvious and clear AI generated content, but it doesn't disclose it on the store page, which they have to according to steam guidelines. I have found, and yes i am somewhat of an expert, Instances of AI generated: - textures (mosaic art, wall art, wood, cloth and more) - Inventory Icons (i think most of them, potions and spells are the most obvious) - background music(2nd act town.) - spoken Dialouge(Blacksmith in 2nd act) - written dialouge(various) - flavor text (various) and i might be wrong, but some 3d models look strange and out of place compared to the rest.(might just be assets made different people) I am not trying to shame an indie studio for using AI to help make their game, but i think not disclosing it is dishonest. Should you buy this? If you don't care about AI usage and can ignore the last third of the game, sure Otherwise, no.

A very good experience through and through. What people said about act 3 during release no longer stands in my opinion, the team has really worked hard on fixing it. Overall the story, writing and music were fantastic. Consistent and really cool artstyle. Not the most graphically impressive game but the artstyle is what carries it. It could maybe run better but on my system I experienced little stutters, however it did feel a bit sluggish at points despite having high FPS. This was a game for me that I was excited to hop on to every time and start doing side content and exploring the world. Especially loved the QoL features that team have added which you will notice on your playthrough. Definitely recommended if you're up for a long game that truly absorbs you in, with a cool twist in the Arthurian lore

Another frustrating instance of a “Steam Deck Verification” meaning nothing to the consumer. I bought the game on Xbox at launch and loved it, but really wanted to play it on the go and not be tied to the TV, so seeing that little green checkmark made it an instant buy for me. Once I got out of the introductory dungeon, I had to lower all the graphics settings to the lowest and cap my framerate at 25 fps - and it still dips as low as 5-10 fps during any sort of combat, outdoors. It looks and runs awful on Steam Deck. Absolutely should not have Verified status. I wish this game wasn’t as good as it is. Uninstalling it and giving up, with no hope of a refund, has soured me on a game I’d been hyping and recommending to friends. I spent at least half of my playtime tweaking settings and trying everything I could find online. ProtonDB suggests running it in Desktop Mode and that doesn’t do much at all. It actually introduced new issues. Art, music, gameplay, writing? Really impressive. On a console or a PC that can actually run it, that is. Steam Deck will make you wish you hadn’t bought it. So disappointed that I don’t think I’m going to bother with it on Xbox either. They got my money twice, so joke’s on me. 😛

This game is very unbalanced… Honestly, I still don’t know what to think of it or whether to recommend it. There are very few games I’ve been so reluctant to return to, and even fewer that frustrated me as much as this one. The game is meant to be dark, but I didn’t expect that to mean you can’t see a single step at night. With the rapid day–night cycle, it becomes annoying — whenever you head out, night always catches you exactly where you don’t want it. At night, monsters appear that always scale to your level, so you can’t outlevel them, and a moment of carelessness means instant death. The same happens in quests, where you’re often thrown straight into a boss fight right after a dialogue, and the boss kills you in a few hits. Not only do you have to repeat the dialogue, but you also can’t use a stealth build. This also happens in the open world, where the game drops you into a ‘boss arena’ and the boss simply beats you down — stealth doesn’t work there at all. Add to that the outdated graphics, which somehow stutter even on a powerful PC, plus occasional crashes, and I just can’t recommend the game. A shame — it could have been an interesting alternative to Skyrim.

Incredible atmosphere and vision, but severely hindered by bugs I originally played the demo for Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon and was completely blown away by its dark fantasy atmosphere, beautiful world design, and overall vision. It convinced me to buy the full game immediately. Visually and atmospherically, the game is a 10/10. However, the technical execution unfortunately lets it down. Even after taking a long break and returning to the game following multiple patches, I still encounter frequent and frustrating bugs. These include clipping through the map while riding a mount, getting stuck in terrain with no way out other than restarting the game, and enemy AI randomly losing track of combat. While I respect the developers' dedication to issuing updates and providing in-game bug reporting tools, the sheer amount of technical issues makes it hard to recommend in its current state. I truly hope the developers can fully stabilize the game, as the core concept and art direction deserve to shine. Rating: 5/10 (Great potential, needs serious technical polish)

The core gameplay loop (explore, slaughter monsters, collect loot) is fun. Everything else is ♥♥♥♥ and unfinished. Bad performance, crappy animations, missing textures, collision boxes extending far outside the object - to the point where it's so obvious you have to wonder how it got past the QA (in all likelihood the devs just didn't care). And the quests are all utterly boring. You may enjoy this game, or parts of it like I did, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I genuinely don't understand where all the positive reviews are coming from. This is an awful, cheap indie project. The worst part is the complete lack of optimization, especially considering how outdated the graphics look. Even on the lowest graphics settings, the game can't maintain a stable 60 FPS at 1080p. That's just unacceptable. The animations are terrible—there are barely any. NPCs just slide across the ground like they're hovering. They magnetize toward you and literally fly through the air when they swing their weapons. Everything looks clunky, unfinished, and incredibly cheap. The main menu and settings UI deserve a special mention because they're an absolute disaster. I honestly haven't seen an interface this bad since around 2005. Whoever designed it either has no idea what a proper game UI looks like or has never actually played a video game. And somehow they don't even know left from right. I'm not exaggerating—they actually swapped the left-hand and right-hand weapon slots. The dialogue is painfully dumb. You also can't simply exit a conversation—you have to keep clicking through all the boring nonsense. Most conversations are heavily scripted, with almost no meaningful choices. Here's a real example from the game: Player: "I have the Knights of the Round Table badge." *(You're forced to say this.)* NPC: "Where did you get it?" Player: "This is my business, it doesn’t concern you!" Seriously? What kind of writing is that? Just compare it to the very first conversation in Gothic 1 about the letter. On top of that, there are plenty of Genshin Impact-style dialogue choices where both options say essentially the same thing, just worded differently. Enemies literally spawn right in front of your face. It's 2025. Great. The only genuinely good thing about this game is the price. But even that advantage disappears because of its terrible technical state. It's hard to enjoy any combat when your FPS constantly drops into the 40s. Overall, I DO NOT recommend this game. If you haven't played proper RPGs like The Elder Scrolls, The Witcher, or, God forgive me, the Gothic series, then don't even think about buying this indie abomination. But if you've already played every RPG you can get your hands on... well, when there's nothing else left, you know how it goes.

How could I have missed that... This one scratches excellently the Skyrim- and even a bit Gothic-Itches. At least I don't have to play a stealth-archer. (Narrator-voice of Morgan Freeman: "And yet, an hour later, he went full stealth-archer"). It's instantly clear that this one was made by actual gamers who love their project. People who understand that gameplay vastly trumps excessively realistic GFX. Kudos again to Poland! It's a bit clunky here and there, but who cares. At least it has no bugs or crashes (for me). Sidequests are sometimes absurdly funny, choices matter, exploration is highly rewarding, setting is fresh and dark, music is very good, sfx+visuals are good. UI does its job. No microtransactions, no costume-dlc-crap, just one good story-dlc which is more of the good old addon-kind. And on top of it: There are many great mods that pimp up the base-game or iron out it's flaws. Also the british accents are a welcome change to the usual (even though they partially forced me to enable subs) :) My personal GOTY '25 & '26 Linux: Runs out of the box perfectly fine, except with Proton-GE.

Have been wondering why I could never get into this game as much as other open world RPG's that it obviously takes inspiration from. The dark fantasy setting is something I always enjoy and the game has some interesting takes on the genre along with some very cool visual design. But something always felt off and I could not bring myself to get invested in the world and characters no matter how much I tried. Come to find out recently that its because the game used generative AI for a lot the writing and some of the art. This leads to the writing and dialogue to be very awkward and "unnatural" as well as the pacing just not making sense. I am beyond disappointed to learn this. I would have much preferred the all the problems this game has been due to amateur writers and voice actors, but sadly it is due to much lazier and less endearing reasons.

Want to like the game but the controls are just terrible. A lot of overlooked QoL UI issues if you try to remap buttons at all. Game says you can customize controller bindings, but in actual application, other bindings don't work. Game will proc health potion on quick bind even when you're full health. Just annoying over looked things that already make the game a drag when trying to deal with the exceptionally slow combat and story telling. The game world seems cool and well fleshed out but the execution is just not there for me. I guess I'm just too spoiled. I don't mind 10-20 year old graphics, but compensate with smooth gameplay and decent fighting.

This game is absolutely stuffed to the gills with AI slop. It notably gives no disclosure of this and seems intentionally obscured. But from the games heavy use of em dashes, flat soulless writing and god awful AI voice acting — it quickly becomes clear what a lazy, dispassionate mess this game is. Books in the world, Bestiary and lore journals all feel like ChatGPT copy paste, which personally just makes me feel like if you couldn't be bothered to spend time writing and caring about your world, why should I waste my time reading it? Tons of visual art assets, including UI, ability icons and paintings in the world carry heavy or outright obvious signs of AI. Abilities and talent trees feel formulaic and soulless, like ChatGPT designed them all. Questline stories all reek heavily of AI to anyone that knows the content it puts out. Don't give your precious time to this pumped out slop pile — The devs clearly didn't.

Arthurian fantasy, but can't even pronounce Tintagel correctly... Ugh. Clearly a labour of love, and with some great lore details lashed into the endless stream of somewhat mandatory flavour text collectables, but... damn if it isn't dull. Doesn't land the ARPG combat at all, doesn't carry any immediate sense of immersion, and the 'moody' environment just devolves into a drab mire that you wade through, looking for the next container to press interact on. I really wanted to love it, and the initial plot hook is pretty cool, in a 'King Arthur meets H.R.Giger' kinda way. But... Likely would have made a better visual novel, tbh. Just not for me.

For a player like myself, this game should be the dream; The Witcher's dark fantasy setting and twists, with Baldur's Gate 3's choice-driven story, all wrapped up in an immersive Elder Scrolls/Skyrim-styled gameplay loop. But somehow, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, falls remarkably short of the mark. The setting feels grimdark in a way where I don't want to help anyone do anything. Choices feel unimpactful, especially because side-quests don't feel like they influence the main quest in my experience. And lastly, despite presenting as an open-world free-roam medieval life simulator, there seems to be little effort in making spaces feel lively, making the game feel mostly linear. First let's address the setting. Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon takes place in an interpretation of Arthurian legend, combined with Celtic mythology, and a Norse-inspired presentation (for the most part). This would be great, if it felt coherent. Instead, the game feels like a visual mess, as though there's 3 or 4 visual styles all fighting for your eye at any given time, especially with the dark flavorings added. And this is ignoring the H.R. Geiger-esque visuals for the black magic behind making King Arthur immortal that feel eerily AI generated (or at least iterated). In the end, enemies feel like they're from a completely different game than the world, which is different than the human characters, also different from interactable objects. Secondly, the narrative. I have to give it, Tainted Grail has a very strong start/first 2 hours, despite the trope of some dead guy inhabiting your body and talking to you. But my personal experience made me lose all interest. For me, when I learned that my character is possessed by the soul of King Arthur, I wanted to (understandably) keep it secret. As a result, at the end of the tutorial, I did not tell Caradoc about my predicament, which then made it very boring when I did find Caradoc and he said, as though minorly annoyed, "yeah I knew you were lying, but that's not going to significantly impact our relationship or the main plot." It was almost as though I could literally feel the writers saying, "we didn't finish this version of the quest, so we just have to railroad you back in." It's hard to feel like my choices matter when they're constantly responded to with, "nuh-uh," or simply ignored. Thirdly, the actual gameplay and systems. Despite borrowing several mechanics from Bethesda RPGs (such as skills), and more specifically borrowing systems from Skyrim such as handedness, skill-trees, and crafting, Tainted Grail feels like a cheap facsimile made of parts of a game, instead of a completed game on its own. Systems like crafting, cooking, and alchemy feel unnecessary and frankly overcomplicated without any real benefit to the player. In terms of the minute-to-minute experience, enemies feel unnecessarily tanky, hard-hitting, and cruel thanks to poor hitboxes/attack timing. Conversely, once you out-level an area, you almost instantly become overpowered, leaving almost no room for a sweet spot in terms of difficulty. This is all in spite of some of the best-designed dungeons I've had in one of these kinds of games. This is all ignoring the rampant lack of polish in what I have experienced (which is only Act 1 as of writing). I understand this game is mid-budget, and not supposed to be a AAA experience, but it's hard to truly feel immersed in this world when characters microphone quality can feel all over the place, with voice-quality also varying (no hate to any actors involved in this game). Characters often speak like they don't live in this world, or rather are simply bored with it. The main quest not caring if you actually remove Excalibur early (it's an achievement, so the developers intend for you to be able to do this), and continuing on as though it were not removed at all is also disheartening. This game being talked about like it's an Elder Scrolls game when immersion is often broken with full-blown cutscenes where you have no control over your character, is likewise disappointing. Lastly, and I know this is downright a nitpick, but you can't sit in any of the chairs. Anywhere. At all. A lack of attention to detail when it comes to something that small really highlights how the rest of the experience feels for me, as though it wants to seem like one of the big award-winning games, but doesn't care about actually being one of them. And unfortunately from what I understand reading several other reviews, the issues only seem to pile on further into the game. Also no local/interior map just sucks, considering how complicated some of the dungeons get. All of this is ignoring the technical end of this game, where it also doesn't do well. Every time the game updates or has received a free DLC, I have to spend no less than 20 minutes at a time verifying the files (for a game that I haven't modded) and rebuilding all of the shaders. Loading into the world for the first time takes long, and there are several stutters/performance bugs while it actually places items, characters, and landscapes. And the telescope is a shortcut to lag city. I do not have the most powerful rig in the world, but I should not be receiving these issues when running the game at 1080p. Unfortunately, in the end, all of the above means I cannot recommend Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon. It seems to fail me in just about every way that I want to try and enjoy it, and the entire experience lacks the necessary polish and connective tissue to pull it all together. Hopefully, if you do decide to play it, you can find some enjoyment from the game, and can have a better experience than me. Will I finish it? Maybe. Probably. Am I ever going to want to think about it again after finishing it? Probably not.
