Not very good at all if I'm being honest - bad AI, bad enemy design, bad map design, awful balancing and a barely functional stealth system. ...Still, it has an undeniable B-movie goofy charm, and it was technologically impressive in its own right back in '04. Get it if you're curious. Beware tho: By default, Steam uses the 32-bit exe. with the 1.40 patch, which broke enemy AI and a lot of other stuff. Either patch the 32-bit version with the community-made 1.41 or replace the 32-bit exe. for the 64-bit one. You will have a very bad time otherwise. I'd go with the 64-bit exe. tho, since it supports enhanced content specific to that version (better textures, objects and drawing distance). Steam will always launch the 32-bit by default, but you can change that for the 64-bit version using the SilentPatch - see comments below. The SilentPatch and TentAI bug fix are a must for this - the latter only if you're still running the 32-bit 1.40 patch. Both of them come bundled with the FarOut mod, which also vastly improves widescreen support. After that, you can use the "-64bit" command line argument on Steam's launch options to always run the 64-bit version by default. Finally, game supports HDR rendering which makes it look way better most of the time, but it has to be toggled via console commands. I have a Steam guide if you're interested. 10/10, ♥♥♥♥ this game.

Самый полезный отзыв ветерана (10+ ч на момент отзыва)Far Cry, as a franchise, has turned into its own monster that Ubisoft has been trying to establish as the definitive series of its genre, much like another series they own. Before that, though, the original game was already widely-known for its visual prowess and openness, and itself spawned a number of spin-offs. After playing through it, I wonder how it ever found that initial success. Certainly, the most noticeable aspect of this game is the level design. The story is basically like an old Sci-Fi channel original movie, complete with the hammy dialogues, and an exotic locale that itself probably took up 90% of the budget, so you're damn sure they got their money's worth. Every type of location that could fit into the action/horror aesthetic of a tropical island chain is reflected here in the level design: sprawling paramilitary bases, maze-like underground stone temples, the wreckage of wayward ships, and so on. Each definitely feels unique, with different options, or lack thereof. The levels are enormous, and often hide alternative paths and enemies in their nooks and crannies, but the punishing nature of the checkpoint system discourages exploration. Unlike the later games, which use open worlds that allow the player to revisit areas during downtime, this first entry uses a linear stage progression. In spite of the sheer size and openness of some of these levels, you're really just going from checkpoint to checkpoint along the absolute quickest and/or safest routes you can find, because of how damn easy it is to die in this game, and because these checkpoints are FAR from one another. There's often no reason to explore, not when the unknowns are usually as dangerous as the more obvious paths, and especially not when you're well past your previous checkpoint, forcing you to replay a large chunk of the level if you perish. I feel like the obnoxiously long distances between checkpoints is a symptom of a larger problem. After all, the numeric sequel has these sorts of long dry spells, with rest locations and stores usually being safe, and everything else usually being dangerous, and you can often need to go for at least half an hour without saving. However, the sequel is also a bit more forgiving in its difficulty, not simply killing the player for being hit by anything harder than a stiff breeze, and is otherwise more grounded. The more reserved and realistic approach of 2 means fewer forced action set-pieces, more situations that feel believably rewarding of the player's paranoia, and fewer bugs affecting the gameplay from either of these angles. There are so many bugs in Far Cry 1 that some hipster startup company will probably try to market it as a sustainable food source in the near future. There are so many bugs that I honestly can't tell what's a glitch, and what's working as intended. For example, it's realistic that certain types of barriers, such as those of fabric or wood, can be shot through. What's not believable is enemies knowing exactly where you are through these walls, and their thusly being able to hit you through them most of the time. Even accounting for the fact that the player can return the favor by firing through these surfaces as well, which is certainly helpful, it still comes off as skewed in the enemies' favor, as they don't seem to need to establish a realistic line of sight first. Of course, that's just one of many examples of the boundless confusion contained within. Even beyond the obvious glitches, like a forklift phasing through the ceiling of an elevator, or ragdoll corpses that pathetically slide along even the faintest of slopes, there's a ton more here that I really can't be sure about. Explosives come to be useless against non-vehicular opponents, as any visually-apparent body armor they have seems to negate most of the damage of explosions, to a downright ridiculous extent. Most late-game human enemies can be launched by grenades and rockets three or four times without dying, and can tank many direct hits from such weapons, too. What's stupid is that headshots are always effective, regardless of the weapon type. It's downright jarring to see some grunt in riot gear survive every rocket in my launcher's magazine, while his buddy in the exact same type of getup dies from a few submachine bullets to the head. Similarly, the player will survive things that would seem quickly lethal, but will also expire to other, oddly specific things. Vehicle still moving 1 MPH after you get out? It taps you, and you're dead. Caught on the edge of an explosion? Well, you can do that another 4 or 5 times. No biggie. Fell down from 10 feet? Now you're 6 feet under. Drowning? What's that? Typically, though, deaths are going to be due to the ridiculous damage from enemy bullets. My guess is that they hurt so much to make up for the inconsistency of their being nigh omniscient in some respects, and utterly brain-dead in others. For example, the stealth system just doesn't work. (I suppose that our protagonist never learned to take off his bright red shirt.)Enemies will notice and shoot at you from stupid distances, including through some objects, as I've already mentioned, so long as they have lines of sight. However, their lines of sight fail to account for the ever-so-slight angle of them hip-firing their weapons. So, basically, this can be cheesed. If they can *see* you, they will stand still and fire at you, even if you're at an angle that their guns won't hit, such as behind a ledge or a wall. Meanwhile, their heads or limbs are likely to be exposed, and you can take your time to reciprocate. It really is wacky behavior. Sometimes, if you kill a boat's pilot, its gunner will sit there in the motionless vessel and simply wait for death. Sometimes, if you're standing at specific distances, enemies won't know whether to shoot you or go in for melee attacks, resulting in an awkward middle ground where they do neither and instead just kind of walk around slowly. That's how I beat the big boss at the volcano level, unloaded my shotgun in his face. I'd feel bad about having to do this kind of stuff to beat the game, but the truth is, part of me legitimately wonders if this was actually what I was supposed to do, considering how difficult it is to survive without these cheap tactics. Especially on the harder difficulties, both the linear and open parts of this game are so punishingly, unavoidably difficult that they devolve into repetitive trial-and-error. When you finally beat that one ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ part, where you get peppered by enemies hiding in the fog of the draw distance, or where you get mobbed by baddies who each require multiple headshots to bring down, it isn't because you implemented the strategies that you're apparently supposed to use. It's because you've memorized where everyone is, where they make their entrances, and how they'll move relative to your attacks. It's because of random chance that causes enemies to get stuck on the corners of walls and tables, turning them into sitting ducks. Far Cry was an important conceptual step for games, but it's also waylaid by problems that don't just feel dated, but often also feel outright ignored in favor of its visuals and scale, which were nonetheless ambitious for the period. The game is frustrating, but as best I can tell, it's not the sort of intentional frustration that comes from believable challenge, or from clever execution that's specifically designed to make you mad in order to teach you a lesson. It's the frustration of an ultimately broken experience.

A classic FPS game from Crytek. For those who didn't already know: This is NOT the first game in the Far Cry series. It is actually the first game in the Crysis series.

Avoid unless you like tinkering. The Steam release ships with Ubisoft’s final Patch 1.4, which introduced the infamous tent AI bug. Enemies can see and shoot straight through tents and canvas like they have built-in wallhacks. Stealth in early camps or the archives? Forget it. You’ll be sniped through fabric the moment you crouch inside a tent. It turns the game into an unintentional “wallhack jungle” and ruins large chunks of single-player experience. Fixable in 5 minutes with free community patches, but it shouldn’t be required. Apparently Ubisoft couldn’t be bothered for the OG classic they strip-mined; snatching the Far Cry name/IP from Crytek post-launch, milking sequels forever, but leaving this to rot. No remaster, no proper re-release, no patches past buggy 1.4, zero love. Skip the Steam version. For reference GOG release is natively patched and works out-of-the-box. The 2004 classic is still brilliant once fixed, but Ubisoft sells it in a knowingly broken state. Refunded. 1/10 as sold, 8/10 once patched.

Classic, but it's old af. I remember watching my father play this on his PC when it came out. I was an inexperienced FPS player at the time and couldn't make it passed the first level. 18 years later, after playing countless SP and MP shooters, there's no difference. I still can't make it passed the first level. Play it for the nostalgia in order to remember that there was once a time where games were unique, well thought out, well crafted products that were worth your hard earned cash.

For anyone playing for the first time, a recommendation with a warning. This is a classic, it feels like the logical evolution following games like Half-Life with a shooter that blends sci-fi but trying to ground it with some sense of realism and having a narrative through the levels instead of just maps, that said, unlike Half-Life and other shooters, this game can be really hard and the last couple of levers are ridiculously so. Let's start with some of the good. The game is from 2004, the graphics are good, especially for the time and I think they hold up pretty well today. The game goes for a more realistic approach than something like Doom, Quake or Half-Life but it's not pretending to be Call of Duty, so it has a blend of more realistic damage but you still can find health and armor pickups. The story is campy fun, it's basically an adventure with some sci-fi elements with a protagonist that's not quite a stereotypical action hero like in Duke Nukem or Serious Sam but you get to listen to him through the game unlike the silent protagonists of Doom and Half-Life. You have a few cut-scenes but they're short for the most part so the game moves along without long interruptions. And the game plays nice, the guns have a nice feel to it and the mechanics are good although I found myself not using all of them all the time and found that other than taking more cover and hiding more than in other classic shooters, I could play it almost the same as some other classic shooters. Now to expand on the bad, my main complain is how hard it is. I don't have anything against hard games but this game can feel unfair and cheap in how hard it can be. You don't move as fast as in other games and you have limited stamina so you don't even have long periods of time to move fast, in the first few levels you adapt to a more cautious style using cover, deception (like distracting the AI by throwing rocks), you die a lot but you learn, adapt and change strategies and you can manage it. But when the mutated creatures start appearing the game quickly changes to unfairly hard. Some of these creatures can kill you with 1 good blow and health and armor pickups are not as abundant as they are in other games. I don't mind being killed with one blow for sense of realism (like a blow to the head for example) so much in the first few levels, there are plenty of levels where you can shoot with a sniper from afar and the AI doesn't have perfect aim so you can take some damage if you stay moving and shooting with better aim, it doesn't feel so bad, but when you have a monster with a rocket launcher as an arm that can shoot infinite rockets at you without having to recharge (when you do have to recharge) and no apparent cool-down and a single rocket can kill you, and you shoot at it with rockets and your rockets barely make a scratch on the monster, I'm sorry, that's just not fair. In other shooters, creatures like that can be stunned and usually kill them with 1 or 2 rockets or weapons that do similar damage like grenades, but not here, and they send you to fight either a bunch of them in open areas or one or two in closed areas where you can barely dodge the rockets and barely make any damage to them when you shoot them. If you can play this game and pass it with just your skills, more power to you, in my case, this is one of the first games that made me so frustrated it actually made me upset and I had to use cheats to decrease the damage taken by me and increase the damage done to the enemies otherwise I wouldn't have finished it. Also, the game is outdated and apparently hasn't received the same love and attention by the modding community as others games have so you have a few mods and patches that fixes things like widescreen and other things but I still found bugs and errors, so there's that. So if you want to go through the history of FarCry games or are an FPS fan, I do recommend playing this game, if you're better than me (which is really possible, I'm not particularly good...) you might like the challenge more than I did or if you're on a similar skill level as mine, then search for a few cheats for the particularly hard levels, mainly the last 2 are really nasty, but before that, this is a really enjoyable game that can be hard but with a good strategy can be fun and challenging.

Far Cry 1 deserves it's place in the pantheon of legendary FPS games. Released in 2004, even today it is comfortably better than many so-called "AAA" games released in the modern age. At the time of coming to market, Far Cry set new benchmarks for AI, graphics and gameplay. Loading was a thing of the past, with massive maps, near-unlimited draw distance, and missions which had multiple approaches to completing. While Far Cry 1's dialogue, story, and characters are painfully cheesy and dumb, the gameplay and level design are a total blast. You spend most of your time carefully navigating an open-world tropical island full of heavily armed and bloodthirsty mercenaries. You have a few different ways of getting around the island which includes simply going on foot, or using vehicles such as turreted jeeps, boats, and a paraglider. The game is action-packed and encourages the player to be strategic. It's really hard, even on the easiest difficulty since enemies are able to properly utilize tactical maneuvers to overwhelm and take you out, and snipers/rocketeers can spot you from far away. Unfortunately, the vanilla version of the game on Steam has broken AI, which basically gives the enemies X-Ray vision allowing them to see you and shoot through any cover that isn't solid. I played with FCAM (Far Cry Addon Mod), which fixes the AI, enhances the graphics, adds iron sights to the weapons, introduces quicksave functionality, amongst other things. There are other ways to get around the AI issue, but they are far more tedious and less likely to work. I strongly recommend getting FCAM and playing with it enabled. Should you decide to go this route, add "-mod:FCAM" to the launch options, minus the quotation marks: this will launch the game and FCAM mod automatically, saving you from having to manually switch from the main menu. For those complaining about the difficulty, this is not a run-and-gun shooter: the enemies are smart, and will home in on your location, and attempt to surround or flank you. Staying on the move and using cover constantly is key to success, as well as choosing your battleground carefully. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys FPS games - this one cannot be missed and is a true classic.

Good adventure FPS, just action without any "modern" stuff, like objects collection, interact with people to get something, etc...

This is a very interesting game, though I personally cannot recommend it. First off, the 1.4 patch allows enemies to see and shoot you through (tent) walls and the game needs to be modded to function properly. Additionally, the animations and I suspect the AI are tied to frame rate, and on a modern PC, that causes some serious difficulty issues, making the easy difficulty unbelievably challenging. I had to use the console command to cap the frame rate to 60 to make the game manageable. Regarding the game-play itself, I feel as though the movement mechanics (speed and crouching) do not meld well with the open area level design and stealth detection system. The game shines in corridors, where you can use the crouch, prone, and lean mechanics to their best effect to whittle enemies down. The story is very campy, to the point of hilarity, which I enjoyed, but overall, I did not find this game to be an enjoyable experience and only completed it due to a simple need to complete things.

Released in the year 2004, the year of such great FPS games like Half-Life 2, DOOM 3, Halo 2, Escape from Butcher Bay, Unreal Tournament 2004, Far Cry franchise got it's start with an ambitious and impressive project, that does a lot of new and interesting things that it's contemporaries lacked. unfortunately, in retrospect, it aged the worst out of all of them. The story follows Jack Carver, former Special Forces soldier, that got stranded on unknown archipelago in the Pacific, where he finds an army of armed to the teeth mercenaries and horrible experiments. Last thing Jack knows is that he was helping journalist named Valerie get to this place, before their boat got blown up. So the objective is to find Valerie and get out of there. The story reminds kind of a 90's acction movie with cliche characters, stupid one-liners, lots of explosions, but I really liked it for it. Jack is a great protagonist, being constantly done with all of the BS that is happening around him and constantly asking questions. The game might be heavily flawed, but story is not the problem. The technical side of the game really suffers especially so long after it's release. First, the game often crashes, specifically when loading a new level, and since you can't save manually, you would have to replay last chunk of level again. Second, the draw distance for a game with large open spaces is kind of small, causing enemies appear out of nowhere on the next island away from you when look through the binoculars, or when they approach you out in the open and you can see them physically appear out of thin air. Third, on the latest patch of the game the AI for some reason got broken and can now see you and shoot you through walls, making certain sections impossibly hard. Fortunately there are fixes online you can use to mitigate that, but it's up to you if you even going to bother to look for them (I recommend FarOut widescreen that can be found here). Also I personally found default FOV to be a bit too narrow, but again, you can fix that with fan-patches or mods. Widescreen support is also pretty dodgy, got to find fix for that too. Also, there is a sound bug, when you kill an enemy that is shooting you, the sound of his gun shooting will continue to play out, even if there is no shooting anymore. The game for it's time for the most part looks fine, but with how nuch time has passed you will efinetely see more and more things aging not to ell, like plants going from low qulity 2D sprites into somewhat higher quality model when you approach it, or plastic looking character models. Overall, the game is kind of abandoned in a very poor state. The gameplay also suffers quite a lot. I mentioned already how AI can shoot you through walls, but it's also acts kind of wierd. One moment they act almost like replica soldiers from FEAR, trying to flank you and retreat when they are at disadvantage, but I saw sometimes when they not react to you at all, ot just run around, or shoot at something non-existing. In the first few levels of the game, the main threat are human mercenaries, pretty tough dudes with guns, have surprisingly a lot of health and also do a lot of damage. later you will encounter new type of enemy, mutants named trigens, that have different forms ith different abilities, They are a huge pain in the rear to deal with since they really hard to kill, but can kill you very quickly. First type of trigen that you will encounter is also the worst one, since his melee attack hitboxes are broken, hitting you almost 2 meters away from your location, but still taking half of your health. Then there are invisible trigens that can only be seen with thermogoggles, and jumping trigens that constantly jump around when you aim at them. And then there are "fat boys" with rocket launchers and tons of health, that are actually kind of easy, if tedious to kill. Let me make on point clear, I admire what Crytek tried to do here. Giving you a large map and freedom to approach combat situations however you want is something that not a lot of games at the time tried to do. That does not excuse the amount of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I saw in this game. The enemies have almost superhuman senses and as soon as you approach them in any way get alerted and alert others, where they psychically sense your location now and get to you to shoot you. The AI could have been great if it was toned down a little bit, but it's ridicoulous when they shoot you through walls, and it not only happened in tents, there was actually a moment where AI tried to shoot at me through a solid concrete wall. Add to that stupid broken trigens, and the combat, that could have been great, just gets ruined by how hard it gets. Like enemies see you on the other side of the map and start shooting you from the rocket launcher, and even if you avoid rockets they explode behind you and get you with splash damage that takes a large chunk of armor and health. The game just get's tedious and repetitive after a while, especially when large open maps get replaced with linear corridors in bunkers where there is no real room for experimentation. I don't know what really happened here, maybe it's skill issue on my part, or the game just was abndonded in a state ike this, but with some fixes this could be an enjoyable experience. I just beat a game that I spent 90 hours on before this, but this felt longer and more tedious than that game. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this. And for shame, I remember seeing my stepfather playing this game when I as a kid, nad playing a bit myself. No amount of nostalgia can salvage this. i do not recommend this to anyone in a state that it is right now.

The main thing first: Far Cry is significantly different from its sequels, playing more like Crysis (which makes sense, given they’re both made by Crytek). Thus, it can be a mixed bag depending on what you’re expecting. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, however. It’s still a fun shooter that checks all the boxes: a mixture of open and linear levels means things don’t get boring, most of the weapons are fun and satisfying to use, and the graphics are still decent, especially for a game from 2004. Even the story, for all its cheesy sci-fi action feel, is fun in a B-movie way. There’s a good progression of upgraded weapons and more dangerous enemies that keeps things interesting to the end. The biggest things against Far Cry are its age and brutal difficulty. Most of what made it special, like its graphics, AI, and open levels are all things later FPS games have and improved on. The AI and the damage enemies can do to you also mean some levels feel unfair, while at other times, things are as easy as hiding in a bush and picking them off one by one. Finally, installing patches that fix the AI and various bugs, making the game less frustrating, is highly recommended. Taking everything into account, the game is a decent shooter, one that’s an easy buy when on sale, especially for someone who wants to experience how the Far Cry franchise got started.

Far Cry™: Goofy Ahh Edition Pros: I) When I booted up the game for the very first time I didn't expect much tbh, but after a short while when I actually experienced the game for myself, I was genuinely surprised by how much detail the devs put in the game. It's hard to believe this game was released in 2004! II) the plot and performance of the characters, especially Jack Carver is super goofy but in a fun, charming way. Only god knows how many times I laughed my @$$ out while playing this game; even the NPC dialogues are enjoyable! Unlike the soul-less shi we get these days. Cons: I) This game is infested with all different kinds of bugs, and in order to enjoy it you have to install a fixer mod. the worst of them all has to be the broken cover system: no matter where you hide, bullets magically pass straight through. at first I thought it was a feature to make the game more challenging, only found out about it after a streamer pointed it out. it will become a huge problem by the end of the game. II) if you want to play this game for the story, DON'T. the story is super forgettable and is whatever. All and all, I still recommend the game since its quite fun. it also shows how far we fell in game development; from what we were and what are now. kind of sad to be honest. 7.5/10

I was led to believe that Far Cry was nothing more than a tech demo that got old by its second level. Led further to believe that there was nothing of value in this game that no game has done better before. I heartily disagree. Far Cry has some of the most unique combat I've ever played in an fps to this day. I don't play many linear fps games that use long-range engagement as its main gameplay loop. Even newer Far Cry games push you to push on bases aggressively. It wants you to take your time with it and not twitch-shoot, which is probably why the newer fans discredit it as much as they do. It's a novel take on the genre that I quite love. The setting is frankly mind-blowing still today. It gives of this dreamy and hazy quality with its verdant valleys and shining islands. But when the game is not focused on lush jungles and its core combat loop the design comes across as very amateurish. The one trick this game loves to do in half of its linear levels is to fill a room with high damage AoE enemies. The final level of the game is this bumped to 11 with 6 rocket launcher mutants and 4 marksman mutants. I cannot fathom why they decided that was a good idea, but its 20 years too late to change that. And yes I said mutants, to those unaware, Far Cry wasn't always bleak warzones or liberation vacations, this is a bog standard sci-fi fps story. It is carried however by its hammy performances and characters. Jack Carver and the mercenaries scattered through the island have one liners that deserve to be kept next to Resident Evil's in terms of cheese. It got a few laughs out of me. I insist that any fan of the series gives it a shot once. It is vastly different from its successors, yet it still deserves to be remembered by its boundary breaking ideas. To new Far Cry fans who picked it up on a bundle... ehhhh try FC3 out then come back to this one.

Stunning sound design, bad game design. Magnificent visuals, but fifty-fifty missions. Clean PC controls, but lots of lame scripts. Very good AI, but it cheats. The second GOTY in 2004, by the way. (Realistic; no enemy markers) Gameplay: combat mechanics [bad TTK, some bugs] 8/10 combat logic [a masterclass as of 2004, with absurd transport] 9/10 stealth 6/10 atmosphere [very uneven, but it's impossible to break away] 8/10 Lore and setting 6/10 <Story> Plot and characters/semiotics 4/10 Graphics [a masterclass] 10/10 Sound work [accurate, but chamberish; lag from shooting] 9/10 🎧 (DSOAL OpenAL soft is required - maybe 64bit) Sound design & music [the iconic music, rich soundscape] 9/10 [GORGEOUS RU localization by Buka, many times better than OG] . The sandbox of our childhood. "9/10"

First of all, this version of the game is broken - the enemies have aimbot on this patch for some weird reason, so you better go to the community hub and grab all the necessary fixes right away, it will save you some headache. I think this alone kinda justifies the red review, but this game has so much more nonsense in it, you have no idea. But first, about some good stuff. It was quite a looker then and still is kind of pretty now, tactical options are very welcome, gunplay is solid - projectile bullets are always a plus. Plus, this is one of the few games outside of mil-sims where going prone and semi-automatic fire are kind of necessity. Overall, the first third of this game is kind of cool and fun. But then it’s just crashes and burns. Any resemblance of intelligent design evaporates and what’s left is cheap, abysmal torture. I’ve played shovelware with more sense than this, I’ve played mods made by literal children with more sense than this. Far Cry introduces monsters, and it feels like they made all of them in a single afternoon while hungover and then made them "challenging" by cranking the health and damage numbers up. There is nothing interesting in a gazillion HP guy that quite literally just stands there and spams rockets at you in close spaces even if you are standing right near him and he is hurting himself with splash damage. It’s just annoying. The non-monster bits completely lose the plot too. Get ready to be randomly killed by a rocket launcher guy from half a map away - there are a lot of them. The less said about this game’s embarrassment of a helicopter boss - the better. The last two levels or so just NUTS.WAD us - aka just spawn lots of whatever without any consideration of how it will play at all. Just get a quicksave mod and savescum it to death, the honest way is not worth it, believe me. And it has nothing to do with challenge, okay? I respect challenge, hell, Blood is one of my favorite games ever. This game is not it. What it is - is cheap and very, VERY badly designed. There is a difference between proper encounters and whatever the hell this is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAras6TW02I
