Sons of the Forest is a huge step up from the original game. Endnight Games really nailed the survival-horror aspect, and the AI is legitimately impressive, enemies feel smart and unpredictable. Having companions like Kelvin is a game-changer; he makes the experience much less lonely and helps out a ton. Just a pro-tip: treat him well, or you might find yourself on the receiving end of a tree to the face! I’ll try to keep my review as clear and honest as possible. Is it worth playing if you haven't played the first one? Definitely. The game is superb, and you won't have any trouble understanding it even if you missed out on the first one. However, I still recommend giving the first game a shot; even though it’s pretty old now, it hasn’t lost its charm, and I don't think it will anytime soon. It's currently on sale on Steam for €3.69 during the Summer Sale, or €16.79 at full price. ---Graphics--- 🥀 Beautiful 💀 Good 💀 Decent 💀 Bad 💀 Paint ---Gameplay--- 🥀 VERY GOOD 💀 Good 💀 It's just gameplay 💀 Mehh 💀 Watch paint dry instead ---Audience--- 💀 Kids 💀 Teens 🥀 Adult (18+) 🥀 Grandma ---Game Time--- 💀 You finish it before you start 💀 Short 💀 Average 🥀 Long ---PC Requirements--- 💀 Check If you can run paint 💀 Potato 🥀 Decent 💀 Fast 💀 Rich ---AI Mechanics--- 💀 Mehh 💀 Decent 🥀 Kelvin will ruin your base if you upset him 💀 Acts like a real player ---Difficulty-- 💀 Just press "W" 💀 Easy 🥀 Sighnificant brain usage 🥀 Dark Souls ---Horror--- 💀 It is not horror at all 💀 A little bit horror 🥀 Scary only if you’re new to horror 💀 You’ll need diapers to play ---Price--- 💀 It's free 🥀 Worth the price 💀 Wait for sale 💀 Not recommended 💀 You could also just burn your money The game is awesome when it comes to survival, though I did have slightly higher expectations for the building mechanics. I know it’s not Minecraft, but it is a survival game after all. When the trailer dropped, I was expecting a bit more freedom to build, but it feels a bit limited. That said, this doesn’t change my overall opinion it’s still a fantastic game and worth every penny. ---Rate--- 🥀 10/10

Best argument for
The most helpful review from a veteran (10+ hours at review)Best argument against
The most helpful review from a veteran (10+ hours at review)I am a big fan of survival games, and I really like the overall concept of Sons of the Forest. The game has some amazing ideas, and visually it can be absolutely breathtaking. The scenic views are among the best I have seen in any survival game. That said, the game became frustrating for me because many basic mechanics are not explained well enough. The lack of a proper tutorial makes the early experience unnecessarily confusing. I had to watch multiple YouTube videos just to understand some of the basic systems. For example, I found the Knight V and kept it in my cabin for a while because I had no idea what it was or how to use it. I only discovered its function by accident when it suddenly started moving. The glider was even more frustrating. I spent around 30 minutes jumping off cliffs and reloading the game because I could not figure out how to use it. Eventually, I watched a YouTube video and realized the mechanic was very unintuitive. Honestly, the glider was the last straw for me, and it is what made me uninstall the game. Some items do have small tutorials, such as the zipline, but even those are not always helpful. I found the zipline in a dark cave and had no idea what was happening or how I was supposed to use it. The building system is also fascinating in theory, but many structures, placements, fittings, and interactions require hours of trial and error or YouTube tutorials to understand properly. I am blown away but what people make. There are also several smaller issues that add up. Doors feel almost useless, and many players seem to rely on alternative building mechanics just to close entrances properly. The lack of a global map is annoying. The caves are extremely dark, and although you can make and place torches, the light is very weak and only illuminates a tiny area around them. The building book could also be organized better. I found some structures, like brick building options, almost by chance. The inventory system looks cool, but it is not always clear how it works. For example, I did not realize you could look to the right to find armor, while the left side does not work the same way. One minor issue would be acceptable, but when there are many small confusing design choices scattered throughout the game, the experience becomes frustrating. For casual players like me, the game has a lot of potential, but it often feels unnecessarily difficult to understand and enjoy.

If you expected a massive leap forward from the first game, this is going to feel like a huge letdown. It gives you shiny graphics and a cool companion AI, but it trades away a lot of the raw horror tension for endless walking and resource grinding. Do not buy it if you want a tight horror survival game. The bad part is the empty map and broken pacing. The island is massive, mostly empty, and the walking part takes way too long just to get anywhere useful. Building a base feels completely pointless because enemies constantly spawn inside your perimeter, and Kelvin will happily chop down your entire treehouse structure by accident. The cave progression is tedious, enemy AI either glitches out or hits you like a truck from behind, and the story makes zero sense. The only good part is the building mechanics and coop fun. Constructing bases log by log feels satisfying, weapon animations are smooth, and messing around on the island with friends can be funny. If you just want a pretty building sandbox to mess around with friends, maybe. But overall, I do not recommend it.

Sons of the Forest just isn’t living up to the first game for me. Combat feels wildly unbalanced, it takes an entire inventory of arrows to kill one cave enemy, while you die in a single hit like you’re made of wet paper. Nothing you craft feels interesting or meaningful, and honestly, there don’t seem to be many new items to craft at all. Most of the crafting menu feels like a copy‑paste from the first game, just slower and more tedious. In the original, hitting an enemy with a club felt brutal and satisfying, eyeballs flying out, real impact, real feedback. This sequel doesn’t even try to match that. It feels like a step backward in almost every department. I bought it on sale for $8.99 and still feel ripped off. I can’t imagine paying full price for something this very, very, very mediocre. Most enemies are recycled from the first game, combat is floaty and unreliable, and half the time I’m wondering whether my attack will even connect. Meanwhile enemies have a full acrobatics routine: climbing trees, dodging, leaping, charging, they have more mobility and options than the player does. It’s not challenging in a fun way; it’s frustrating in a sloppy way. Crafting and building are painfully slow. Everything requires way too many materials, and gathering those materials takes forever. Some items you need aren’t even guaranteed, you just have to hope the area you’re exploring happens to have what you need. The pacing is glacial, and not in a good survival‑game way. It’s just slow for the sake of being slow. I want to like this game. I loved the first one. But right now, Sons of the Forest feels boring, padded, and directionless. I’m still forming my opinion, and I’ll update this review if things improve as I play more, but at the moment, I’m honestly wondering if I’m wasting my time. Also, the gunplay is the worst I've seen for a game of this stature. It's floaty, with zero impact. The enemies die the same as they would. This feels like a downgrade to me.

If you loved The Forest, the sequel takes everything that made the original great and turns it up a notch. It’s easily one of the most addictive survival games out there right now, successfully balancing genuine terror with absolute sandbox madness. The game is a total chameleon depending on how you want to play. If you go in solo, it’s a brilliant, incredibly tense psychological horror. Every snapping twig in the woods will have you spinning around in a panic. But the second you hop on with friends, the vibe completely shifts into hilarious, chaotic fun. One minute you're trying to coordinate a base build, and the next you're laughing your heads off at the bizarre cannibal AI trying to raid your camp. The dynamic seasons cycle is easily one of the best additions. Watching the island transition from a lush, sunny summer to a brutal, freezing winter isn't just eye candy; it completely changes the meta. It adds this amazing layer of unpredictability. A river that used to be a safe barrier and a great fishing spot suddenly freezes solid, meaning cannibals can just walk right across ice to get to you. You’re constantly forced to adapt, which keeps the gameplay loop feeling fresh. That said, it definitely has some quirks that remind you it’s still a video game, for better or worse. First off, nighttime lasts way too long. The pitch-black darkness is great for atmosphere initially, but it quickly crosses the line into tedious. You end up sitting around wasting resources just to see two feet in front of your face, which totally kills the momentum when you just want to build or explore. Then there are the bugs and exploits that can completely break the survival tension if you let them. The biggest offender is an incredibly easy item dupe: all your friend has to do is put their items in storage, log out of the game, and log back in. When they spawn back in, their full inventory is magically restored, but the stuff they put in the boxes is still there. If your group lacks self-control, the scarcity mechanic goes right out the window. Multiplayer progression can also feel a bit lazy in spots. Take the shovel, for instance. Only one person in the group actually needs to go get it. Since anything dug up by that player can be seen and grabbed by everyone else on the server, there's zero reason for the rest of the squad to bother grinding for their own. It kinda cheapens the reward of progression. Even with the long nights and the goofy exploits, Sons of the Forest is a blast. It hits that perfect sweet spot between terrifying survival and total creative freedom. Just try to resist the urge to dupe an endless supply of shotgun shells on day two!

PROS: + Great visuals and scenery between the changing seasons + Combat mechanics and the clever AI of enemy NPC behaviour + Very immersive game of survival with consequences + Engaging building and upgrading + Kelvin and Virginia are helpful companions in gameplay CONS: - The game does not provide clear direction or guidance on where you need to go and what you need to do in order to progress the main story. The map markers are not clear or non-existent. This should be a setting to have on or off based on preference. Without the help of tutorials by the community, this game would be pretty much impossible to go through for the first time, as the tiniest unmarked details need to happen in a specific order or you end up wasting hours of your time running through woods or caves aimlessly just to find out you're missing something. CONCLUSION: Overall this is a very great game that I would recommend, but it is not one that I would replay again for the story, only for the free-roam, building, survival and combat.

Bad story but a decent gameplay. Don't rush yourself in this game.

For me, this is the best survival horror game I've ever played. I love the crafting and base-building mechanics of the game. The visuals are stunning and the scenery throughout the changing seasons is absolutely beautiful. One of my favorite things to do during my playtime with my friends is the nighttime road trips using the golf cart; it feels like I'm inside the game. I also love the effects when jumping in the waterfalls or on the ocean (I'm referring to the echo effects when in the water). The use of a glider is a lot of fun as well, although I'm very bad at it. The 8-player co-op is amazing; I was able to play with all of my friends. Even after finishing it three times, I still go back whenever I miss it. I really hope the Forest 3 is even better. My only concern is that it might become too advanced and move away from the feeling of simply surviving in the forest, which is one of the things I love about the series. Oh, by the way, I got this game on its early release date back in Feb 2023. It was really laggy at first and I had to wait for the final release before I could enjoy it. All in all I've had an amazing experience with SOTF and I even made a lot of new friends because of this game! Labyu Endnight Games Ltd! Yordabest! Raawr! Mee---ow! 🧟♀️

Personal Rating: Very Positive (80%) Better in some aspects, worse in other aspects. This is not exactly a continuation to the first The Forest, it's a completely different timeline. The map is larger, there are more caves, and of course there is the same thing with OP items. When you find a cave, and get OP item from it at the start, the learning curve shifts into a much lower gear. I experienced this myself with my friend, when he got those gliders. Suddenly, travelling was no issue. (but true, travelling was the most boring thing ever) The story is that you are finding a bilionaire lost somewhere on the island, but it's really surface-level story, and I don't care about it really. Survival: The building mechanics are better for sure, but the enemies are a bit too OP (might be my skill issue), and also a bit too dumb. They are incapable of entering the sea AT ALL, so when you build a base 1 meter from the shore, you are pretty much safe. I'd recommend it, but with friends. I bought it because my friend wanted to play this with me, and solo became really boring really quickly.

Sons of the Forest is a beautiful yet terrifying survival game. It offers amazing freedom and a tense atmosphere, but it stumbles heavily when it comes to the story. The game shines brightest in its building mechanics. Instead of just clicking menus, building feels physical and realistic. You manually chop logs, split planks, and snap them into place. Whether you want to build a small cabin or a massive fortress, the creative freedom is incredible. Though it feels a bit tame when you start to focus on the main history. It simply becomes irrelevant. While the gameplay is great, the main story struggles heavily. The plot is told through scattered notes and confusing cutscenes that leave you with more questions than answers. Sadly, the ending feels very flat and rushed. After hours of intense survival and building, the final payoff is deeply unsatisfying. Would have appreciated a more intens boss fight at the end. Overall I would not recommend this game for the story, which is the most important part for me. The building stuff and atmosphere is indeed great.

Solid survival mechanics, exploring the island and fighting the locals is fun. Story is kinda whatever but the building mechanics are surprisingly good. Also there's my boy Kelvin <3

Sons of the Forest takes everything that made The Forest great and improves on it. The graphics are incredible, the atmosphere is tense, and exploring the island always feels rewarding. The changing seasons and weather make survival more immersive, while the improved building system gives you much more freedom to create unique bases. While the game has improved considerably since launch, occasional bugs and AI quirks can still disrupt immersion. Several mechanics could have been expanded with future updates. Unfortunately, the developers have moved on, leaving the game in a state that feels complete enough to play, but not complete enough to reach its full potential Rating: 4/5 cat bells 🔔🔔🔔🔔 (I entered forest. Smelled many trees. Good place for nap... until screaming hairless apes chased me. Very rude. Human servant built cozy base. Approved. Then forgot to close door. Cannibals came inside. Disapproved. Plenty of fish to steal. Many squirrels to watch. Strange three-legged human gave snacks. She may stay.)

I am a big fan of survival games, and I really like the overall concept of Sons of the Forest.

Unfortunately no. SOTF is a very good example why more is not always better. The game basically has the exact same issues that the first game had. It's like the devs took the first game, got a higher budget and just... made the same game again. The mechanics simply don't mesh. While the game does look and sound mostly great, there are just too many negatives: - Survival mechanics are pointless because the map is chock full of healing items and food you can just pick up. There is never any urgency or scarcity. - Base building, while an interesting system, is completely pointless. The game expects you to go to PoI's all over the HUGE map. The base buildings offer absolutely nothing that you can't just take with you anyways. There is no benefit to it, quite the opposite. You get CONSTANTLY raided by cannibals that damage your buildings. It's a slog. - There is just too much stuff. By midgame your inventory will be so stuffed with items that you won't find ♥♥♥♥. Crafting is extremely unfun because you spend ages finding items in your inventory, especially with the more complex recipes with 5+ items. At some point I just avoided crafting altogether. Why would I even craft anything if the game just drops me more than I can use anyways? - Combat is still clunky. You have no concept of how much damage something is doing, both outgoing and incoming damage. Blocking feels like it does nothing. Stamina is a dumb system that punishes you for attacking. - The UI is an unintuitive and inconsistent mess. I appreciate the attempt at immersion and realism, but it just ends up being clunky. It worked in the first game due to limited items and scope, but there's just too much. How am I supposed to know I have to look DOWN to switch ammo types? - The story is uh... I don't know. I honestly have no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ clue what happened. Something something magic rocks. Something something aliens? If you like reading tons and tons of notes and connecting threads yourself, you might enjoy this. I didn't. - Like in the first game, AI can be cheesed extremely easily. NPCs still get stuck on pebbles. You can still just climb on a rock and there's nothing they can do to you. And even if you don't cheese on purpose, they will find a way to get stuck.
