"Why are we still here? Just to suffer?" That line from Kazuhira Miller doesn't just serve as a meme—it's a thesis. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is less a game and more a controlled fracture. A design marvel wrapped in themes of absence, identity, and the illusion of control. It throws you into vast, living environments—Afghanistan and Africa—that breathe with day-night cycles, dynamic weather, and AI that adapts to your tactics. Start using too many headshots? They'll wear helmets. Prefer night infiltration? They'll bring flashlights. The world watches and adjusts. Mechanically, it's one of the best stealth-action sandboxes ever created. Movement is fluid, aiming is responsive, and nearly every approach to a mission is valid—stealth, assault, distraction, manipulation. Even something as ridiculous as Fultoning a bear becomes part of the plan. Everything ties back to Mother Base—your expanding home, your personal army. Every soldier you extract, every resource you capture, isn't just flavor—they matter. There’s an odd satisfaction in watching your FOB grow, in listening to recruited enemies now call you “Boss.” And yet, for all its systems and mechanics, the soul of MGSV is quieter, more fractured. The narrative is disjointed by design. Kojima leans into what’s missing. Scenes unfold in cassette tapes. Conversations happen in shadows. You’re not just Big Boss—you’re a symbol. Or maybe an echo. The game never gives you full answers because it’s about loss, not closure. Chapter 2 is divisive: some call it unfinished; others see it as the point. You become a ghost haunted by the choices of others. You don’t get a real ending—because legends don’t. Graphically, the Fox Engine still holds up. The lighting, the facial expressions, the terrain—they all feel real. The soundtrack is perfectly curated: "Sins of the Father," "Nuclear," and a sprinkle of 80s classics like "The Final Countdown" and "Take On Me" don’t just fill space—they frame it. And then there’s Quiet’s theme—absolutely devastating once context settles in. Yes, it has flaws. Mission 51 is cut. Some missions in the second chapter are recycled. Microtransactions for FOBs feel like a publisher’s fingerprint on an otherwise deeply personal project. And Quiet’s design is… well, complicated. But none of it undoes the weight of the experience. “You’re going to have to choose. Whether to live as a man… or as a legend.” MGSV doesn’t guide you toward that choice—it traps you inside it. You play for 80, 100, 150 hours, building a legend. And in the end, it hands you a mirror. It’s not perfect. It’s better. It’s honest. And it stays with you long after you uninstall it.

EDIT: 04/08/2026 they fixed the messy code on Denuvo, making TPP Fix not necessary, but still welcomed for other features. I still wonder why the DRM is still here in the first place and why would anyone waste time and resources to make it working. The fact that they are still paying for a subscription after not funding Kojima Productions to complete the game till the end is funny. Spend less money to get people angry, spend more money to get them even more angry. As of time of writing, SH: Townfall seems to be launching without a DRM, just like the rest of their outsourced/co-developed/published games since SH2 Remake. Either they have little faith in their new products to not bother paying for Denuvo, or they found a middle ground due to outsourcing each project to studios that finally did every game justice after the mess they made in 2000's, where it all went wrong. Shame about not having an in-house engine. If Konami didn't crap their pants, we would have a modern rendition of an updated Fox Engine, much like Decima, REngine, etc. It was made to be that, but it never went beyond that. Because Unreal Engine 5 despite having a complete documentation on how to do everything, developers don't bother with it due to how easy is to make games on it with baked in features and default presets, pushing abnormal load and stress on both consoles and PCs. AAA Published Developers without in-house engines don't have any other option, the only option they have is to use one of the worst engines out there. Which makes me wonder, what is the point and will they even bother to remove it once they decide stop paying for the DRM? They have to generate enough money from MGSV to keep the servers going and updating them, doing regular maintenance, etc. There is also no reason to use money generated from other projects to fund this. My stance on DRM goes from negative to neutral, depending on the usage. Capcom is doing it right, at least with Denuvo. They have a 12-36 month window before it is removed. Customers know that in advance when buying their products. EnigmaDRM is another matter, but i am sure they learned their lesson after REmake4 and they won't be putting it into any of their major releases again. It's just easier to remove it. ORIGINAL POST: On 09/06/2026 they updated the game without any announcement, added a new Denuvo version on a 11 year old game, broke ALL the mods just to impose sanctions on Russia and Belarus. The very countries that are represented in their games. But one good thing came out of it, it exposed all the filthy bootlickers defending this trash of a company that hasn't released a single good game in, guess what, 11 years after firing Kojima because a delay and more funding would push their annual net balance, despite this being their most sold game and the game that actually kept them alive to this day in the video game industry. Silent Hill 2 Remake, Silent Hill f and Metal Gear Solid: Delta weren't made by Konami, they were outsourced. That's why they are actually good. And none of those games have Denuvo since day one. If Konami made them i bet they would turned out to be trash as they barely have anyone left who knows how to code Video Games. It took them 3 Years to make Master Collection Vol.1 playable, not fixed, but playable. If you really want to fix the game, you need to download MGSFix + Community Bugfix Compilation +HD UI + Better Audio at Nexus for MGS2/3. FUKONAMI. PULL THE LEVER. 1.0.15.4 caused massive slowdowns and stutters. It's about 20-30% decrease in performance due to how they implemented Denuvo an the CPU Draw Calls and messy code. The Character Creation will run at 7 FPS without exception, even if you have a RTX 5090. I reverted the .exe file, compared everything, tested everything if it works, generated Denuvo Tokens just to see if the 1.0.15.3 version still works, and it does. However without Online Functions. Here is the mod by razutaxuwe https://www.nexusmods.com/metalgearsolidvtpp/mods/2489 if you wish to downgrade, or a .dll injector by Alice https://github.com/alicealys/tpp-mod Those are perfectly legal as they do not use Konami Assets. If you are using Infinite Heaven/IHHook + ZETA, and wish to use TPP MOD by Alice, please use ASI Loader: https://github.com/ThirteenAG/Ultimate-ASI-Loader/releases You must use Win64, i personally recommend winmm.dll, put it in the root folder, afterwards rename all your .dll files (Infinite Heaven/IHHook and Zeta and/or V-Framework) to .asi Most mods will work with the new .exe, however reverting the .exe is a temporary fix for older mods that do not work or have problems loading if you wish to play them. So the creators and their mods plus their hard work never fade away. Despite that, imposing Sanctions on the countries that are featured in this game, along with the fact that it goes AGAINST the message of the game, my review will remain unchanged. I love this game, in fact, i recommend the game. It's a good game, it's one of the BEST games ever. And the best stealth game ever. With, or without mods. But Konami doesn't deserve the money when most of the staff left their company, the very staff that made this game. Just because they funded it doesn't mean anything to me. They didn't fund it enough nor given it enough time to get a proper ending or finish it with all the features, yet they still oversold and generated enough money. It's basically their last proper game, and a money machine that sells. Worth a buy for 30€? Sure, you are paying for the game to play and enjoy it. Just remember where the money is going. When i bought GZ/TPP pre-order at Launch, Kojima Productions still received money and support. Now they don't. LONG LIVE KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS!

This would have been a tricky game to review normally, some parts are extremely well designed while other aspects are obviously unfinished or padded out to a ridiculous extent. That said, it became a lot easier to review about 10 hours in when I realized that the constant mobile game level of time and grind walled content was there to sell you on real money transactions. A singleplayer game where Konami engages in extremely scummy anti consumer behaviour by making the singleplayer campaign much more tedious, time consuming and grindy than it otherwise would be...unless you pay them more money! Mobile game level grinds, time walls, pay walls in a full priced AAA game means an automatic negative review. Hopefully Konami avoids this kind of thing in the future but I doubt it given their reputation.

War Crimes, Cassette Tapes, and the Greatest Stealth Sandbox Ever Built for a Man Having the Worst Midlife Crisis on Earth 1984: Snake Wakes Up and Immediately Makes It Everyone Else’s Problem METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN kicks off with a hospital escape so deranged it feels like someone filmed a fever dream with military funding. Then it drops you into 1984 as Venom Snake, loose in Afghanistan and Central Africa, chasing revenge, rescuing Miller, rebuilding an army, and generally behaving like therapy has failed on an international scale. It’s officially sold as “tactical espionage operations,” which is accurate, but not quite accurate enough. This is tactical espionage operations if tactical espionage operations also included horse poop, child soldiers, cassette tapes, and a helicopter that arrives like it’s billing overtime. Fox Engine Still Looks Like Black Magic in Combat Boots This game still looks filthy in the best possible way. Not just “good for its age.” I mean properly, obnoxiously good. Sunlight bouncing off sand, floodlights cutting through dark outposts, rain slapping across metal, faces half-lit in the chopper, all of it still has that expensive, clinical shine that makes a lot of newer games look like they were assembled out of damp cereal. It’s not trying to be pretty in a fairytale sense. It wants to look like dust, steel, blood, and bad intentions. Mission accomplished, you magnificent bastard. Did I mention it's disgustingly well-optimized as well? The Soundtrack Has Taste, the Helicopter Has an Ego, and Both Are Right The audio in this thing is absurdly sharp. Every suppressed shot has that nasty little cough to it, every alarm feels like your luck just got audited, and the helicopter may as well be a supporting character by the end. Then there’s the music. The licensed tracks, the synthy unease, the mission intros that make you feel ten times cooler than your actual performance deserves, it all works. MGSV understands a crucial truth: if you’re going to sneak into a Soviet base at 3 a.m., you should at least have bangers. Otherwise it’s just unpaid trespassing. Every Outpost Is a Puzzle Box and You’re Allowed to Be a Complete Freak About It This is where The Phantom Pain goes from “excellent video game” to “frankly a bit rude to the competition.” The stealth is incredible. Every mission gives you room to improvise, sabotage, scout, ghost through, tranquilize half the map, or turn the whole operation into a flaming HR incident. The open mission structure, all the tools, the buddy system, the supply drops, the weird little emergent disasters, everything clicks effortlessly. It's one of the few games where messing up is often more entertaining than succeeding cleanly. And the controls? Sharp as hell. The game trusts you to experiment, then quietly smirks while you invent some deeply unhinged tactic involving decoys, sleeping gas, and a cardboard box. A Great Story Until It Starts Leaving Pages Stuck to the Printer The story is fascinating right up until it starts feeling like it lost a fight with a chainsaw in the edit room. Early on, it’s strong stuff: revenge, identity, manipulation, trauma, all wrapped in that wonderfully self-important Metal Gear tone where everyone talks like they’re delivering classified poetry. I like that about it. I really do. But the back half stumbles. Hard. Important threads feel underfed, emotional beats get stranded, and the whole thing eventually gives off the unmistakable vibe of a masterpiece with a missing wall. Also, Quiet is a ridiculous character design. Not subtle, not clever, not “symbolic,” just Kojima looking you dead in the eye and saying, “No, seriously, she breathes through her skin,” as if we all just fell off the idiot truck yesterday. An All-Time Great Game with a Hole Blown Straight Through the Middle of It That’s the maddening part. The Phantom Pain is simultaneously one of the best stealth games ever made and one of the most frustratingly incomplete-feeling blockbusters I’ve ever played. Its moment-to-moment design is so damn good that you can forgive almost anything for a while. Then the repetition creeps in, the narrative starts wobbling, and you realize this incredible machine is running with a few organs missing. Even so, the highs are ridiculous. Mother Base building is weirdly addictive, the freedom is intoxicating, and the game keeps producing those perfect little “♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, did I just pull that off?” moments that most open-world games would kill for. So yes, it’s flawed. Very flawed. It also absolutely wipes the floor with most games that are technically more “complete” but have the charisma of office carpeting. Verdict Graphics: 9.5/10 Still makes military dirt look expensive. Sound: 9/10 Rotor blades, tape hiss, and mission music doing criminally good work. Gameplay: 10/10 An elite stealth sandbox that lets you play like a genius, an idiot, or both at once. Story: 7/10 Brilliant in stretches, then suddenly held together with duct tape and denial. Overall: 8.9/10 METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN is the kind of game that annoys me by being phenomenal. If it were merely bad, fine, easy, throw it in the bin. But no, it has to be astonishing for forty hours, occasionally transcend the genre, and then leave a giant crater where a fully satisfying ending should be. Bastard. I still love it. Not because it’s tidy, and definitely not because it wraps up neatly, but because when you’re actually in the field, sneaking through a base while a sandstorm rolls in and your helicopter is blasting 80s nonsense on the horizon, it feels untouchable. Broken in places, yes. But untouchable. And honestly, that’s a very Metal Gear way to be.

First off, I do actually like the game. Why the negative review, you might ask? Pros: - Fantastic gameplay - Great stealth - Better recon and scouting than every Ghost Recon game - Decent gunplay - Brilliant optimization Cons: - Story is convoluted garbage - Audio is abysmal - It is so very tedious to load into missions - Development is tiresome - So much visual clutter Pros Explanation: Gameplay - The gameplay is great. Snake feels.. fine, in movement, but the variation in approach and open-ended-ness of missions is amazing. Feels like Dishonored if it was a military open-world third person shooter. Stealth - The stealth is great. It's punishing, enemies adapt to your style of play over the course of the missions. For instance, killing everything head on with an LMG will lead to enemies using riot shields and heavy armor, while stealthing everything at night will give them night vision goggles and make them do everything in pairs. Recon - You can actually scout out an area. Revolutionary, right? But seriously, the amount of satisfaction you get by marking everyone with binos is unmatched. A lot better than just getting a drone out and doing it like that. You actually have to find vantage points. Gunplay - Gunplay is.. fine. Every assault rifle feels more or less the same. There are three different kinds of shotguns - pump action, semi auto, and full auto. Two different kinds of rifles - bolt action and semi auto. Lock on missile launchers and manual. Full auto pistols, manual chamber tranquilisers, the like. You can't shoot anything when driving a vehicle, though, and vehicles were already too floaty for my liking. It's fine. It's no SCP: Secret Laboratory. /s Optimisation - I played this at 1080p 60FPS on all Medium settings with Volumetric Clouds, DoF, and motion blur turned off. AMD Radeon integrated 610M and a Ryzen 5 7520U. Potato. It's really well optimised, and even has mods that make it even better by removing physics of all kinds. Cons Explanation: Story - It's ♥♥♥♥. If you're looking for a good story, go play a game that's advertised as one. Story in this one is convoluted and typical Metal Gear stories, at least for me. The two starting missions are ♥♥♥♥ and give you zero control over your character. Sure, Big Boss is weak and slow. Ishmael is not. He kind of just let's you crawl along, following him, and never helps you up. (Oooh, story reason for this, seen from a mile away). Audio - There is so much audio clutter. Every time you scan an enemy with your binoculars, some female voice says some random thing about 'Scan complete'. This happens every time, and you will be scanning them every time. There is no option to change this, which is a theme with the audio. Additionally, running makes you hear the wind whistling past you, which gets old fast. The general audio quality is awful. There are no separate volume controls for dialogue, sound effects, or music. It's like it was designed to constantly deliver excessive information with no regard for the player. The sound of Sahelanthropus walking isn't synced with it actually walking. The iDroid (your phone, basically) overlaps with mission voiceovers and radio chatter, which makes it messy and illegible(?). Not sure if that's the right word. Speaking of which, 90% of the voice acting is garbage outside of story missions. If you couldn't tell, I hate the audio in this game. It's my biggest issue with it. That, and Quiet whistling. Just shut up. Tedium - After almost every major early-game story mission, there's an unavoidable section where some idiot speaks to you in a monotone about some cool new trinket you got. It's unskippable. It encourages real-life downtime. Then, if that wasn't bad enough, before each mission actually starts you get to equip your items. That's fine. After clicking 'commence mission', you have to sit through about two minutes of waiting for your helicopter to arrive at its destination before finally letting you start. Right after that, in the early game, you realise you have no car and are a kilometer from your destination. You then cannot find a car for the rest of that mission, and if you do, you cannot keep it with you because your funny extraction device isn't upgraded enough. When you try to upgrade it, you can't, because your R&D team isn't upgraded enough. You find some people to join it and extract them, but you run out of your extremely limited early game supply of them and have to wait until your current mission is completed before getting more. It's just unnecessary tedium that encourages real-world downtime just for the sake of you playing the game a bit longer. The iDroid menus stall, the helicopter rides stall (there's one at the end too, if you choose to extract that way), everything stalls. Why? To 'pace you' or something. It's just tedium. Even restarting the mission just restarts the helicopter ride, too. That covers the 'tiresome development' part, too. Visual clutter - there is so much. Every time you come across a dumpster, there's a marker telling you to pause and read a tooltip. It's not just dumpsters. It's also every placed object in the world. See a cassete tape? Tutorial. Take out a sniper rifle? Here's how to zoom in. Can't turn any of it off, and it all lasts for about ten seconds before it decays. Way too much. Even for the dumpsters and things like snipers spotting you, there's a tooltip. Even some ♥♥♥♥♥♥ on the radio comes and tells you about them every time. The game gives you an intel button, but shoves things in your face when you don't use it. That is not good game design. There is an overabundance of floating markers on every tiny little thing, and you can't turn it off (as far as I know). There's one over enemies' heads - that's fine. Over vehicles, yeah, okay. Over a mortar you're never going to use. Bit annoying. Over every single machine gun, every anti-air cannon, everything. That gets tiring fast. Environmental visual effects compete with the UI. Color saturation remains high. You want a full nohud playthrough? You still have stealth cues and objective markers that for some reason are under Gameplay, not Display. Still seeing button prompts? Deal with it. I would recommend playing this game with the following mods: Infinite Heaven and all of its subsidiaries Audio Redux If you want to question my amount of hours compared with my feelings about this game: - I use SnakeBite Mod Manager, which seems to not count my hours in Steam. I would estimate I have about 120 or so hours in the game. - Achievements don't seem to pop. Finally: - I do like this game's core gameplay, but it hurts my ears and doesn't respect my time, and therefore isn't worth full price in my opinion. - I'm not reviewing FOB missions because I don't know it well enough to give a fair judgement. Thank you for reading!

Nice job updating an 11 year old game with new DRM Screwing over customers with worse performance, broken mods and no more android compatibility. What are you all doing? I'd refund the $10 if I could.

A physically scarred Hungarian dressed as a Pinkerton cowboy with a domino mask, spends a decade preparing a speech regarding his plans to basically give smallpox blankets to the Americans with the ironic, forced help of a Native American. He proceeds to tell this plan to the wrong person, minutes before his bipedal robot with a Reddit name is stolen by a Russian ginger twink possessed by a British kid's burning hatred. Phantom Pain is one of the few games of modern decades to have so much discussion about it. Its place in the meme-consciousness of culture perhaps has breached beyond even the original games, despite recent proliferations of its iconic sound effects making it to Tiktok and other social media networks. Phantom Pain left a phantom pain deep inside everyone. I cannot recall a single game that so deeply touched the people who played it, and not always in the most tender way, that also evoked so much discussion and analysis. I played the game on launch and remember pre-loading it the night prior, waking up just in time to start where Ground Zeroes had left off. This game came out during a profoundly sad time in my life, among the darkest, if not the absolute darkest. Witcher 3 of the same era, may have saved my life, but Phantom Pain held it hostage and fundamentally changed me as a person in a deeper way. Phantom Pain is not the greatest game of all time, but its very easily the greatest stealth game of all time and honestly, certainly one of the best Metal Gear Solid games, despite being so dissonant to the franchise at the same time. By all means, the mechanics were done better in Peace Walker and Peace Walker itself, is a far more truthful conclusion to the arcs and thesis of MGS3. Phantom Pain is something more and something less at the same time, a game that is surely unfinished due to Konami losing patience with its obnoxiously expensive and lengthy development and the unhinged nature of Kojima's vision, and ironically... the game has far more charm as a result. I dare say that it is the only game that in its current state, perhaps is more iconic because of it, rather than in detriment to it. While it is deeply sad that, truthfully, the linear missions are some of the best in the franchise and the presentation of many of the cinematics are some of the greatest renderings in any game ever... what the game does *wrong* alongside what it does right, somehow complements it so much better. For years, I thought this was cope and that truly, the trailers for the game and all of its hints and personal editing and music choice by Kojima himself was better than Phantom Pain itself... But I have had enough time away to know the truth, the full truth. And despite it being one of the more vague and at times, strangest MGS games (only because Kojima does not return to his trademark tradition of intense, mandatory exposition via cutscenes and codec calls are replaced with somewhat optional, Peace Walker-style cassette tapes that are essential to comprehending the full story) this unique character carries the game to a surreal plane of existence that so few games can even begin to occupy. This game truly busted my balls sometimes, there were times I was absolutely having the worst time of my life until I grinded some side ops, got better equipment and more GMP, and suddenly, overnight, fell in love with every mechanic all over again ("Like A Virgin", Madonna style. The pain in the beginning was a mandatory hymen to overcome) despite the fact the difficulty curve-♥♥♥♥ did not always hit my cervix in the right way. With the exception of some intense late game missions in the epilogue content, mid to late game really is one of the most empowering experiences. You truly come to the title of Big Boss on your own, in many ways and I was honestly impressed with the skills I cultivated, alongside my weaponry and equipment, bonds with the buddies and deeper utilization of the support mechanics and how they came together in a synergy that was exciting yet calm, collected and familiar. When you develop the skillset to match your confidence, it truly becomes a game of uncontested greatness. While a large departure from previous narrative structures, I actually argue that Phantom Pain is some of Kojima's absolute best work. Some of the character beats and the presentation of the stellar cutscenes, have become completely and utterly iconic, outliving the game itself in some ways. The FOX Engine is a spectacle that, despite its age, performs and controls better than most games having released this year. A decade later and seeing the individual muscle group flexing and altering to Venom's struggling movements in the hospital introduction, absolutely blows me away. And the way equipment sounds, the way the fabric moves... all of these things are common stays now in unreal slop games and yet, there is something so much more artistic in the FOX engine. I know for a fact, that this game drastically changed the trajectory of some of my friend's lives and some of the consequences of that have lead to IRL character arcs worthy of their own books. It is safe to say, that I am one of those people touched by the tragedy of this game and its characters too. Also, having read Moby ♥♥♥♥ twice in multiple languages, Kojima really nails the parallels well. It is amusing that Kojima arguably has some of the most nuanced and intelligent writing of Soviet individuals in almost any piece of mainstream media, completely removed from all bias. Two Soviets guards discussed the novel "1984" and discussed healthy critique and praise of it in equal measure, all while expelling that they themselves are not hardline communists but cannot help but think that the humanist, liberal views of westerners and their socialist reformers or capitalist progressives could hardly build a better 'utopia'. Long gone is the liberal romantic Kojima who saw a possible world of co-existence between the spheres of super powers and a healthy fascination with third-worldism. The Kojima of Phantom Pain is one that understands the harsh reality of the real politik of the world and the Cold War. One that is not necessarily nihilistic, but aware that all conflicts and their state backers and non-state actors are subject to spheres and systems of powers and influence far beyond their comprehension or ability to genuinely resist or reform it. Kojima brings us to the darkest place in any game in this contemporary setting, investing the player in a world of espionage, tactics and unconventional war, but also the devilish phantoms of extremist factions and the neo-colonial spirit of unrestrained, free market military industrial complexes. And at the same time, it is a game where the shrapnel in your head grows longer to show how much of an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ you or and you can train a dog to kill people with a knife, while dressing it up in elite stealth gear. You can even deck your horse out with armour. Its great. Quiet was a contentious addition that received less than stellar feedback from some select fans, among the same who moaned about the vocal chord parasites and the now infamous twist of the game. On this playthrough, I was really reminded that Kojima managed to write a better female character, who only has a handful of lines and no clothes, better than most of his peers ever could. Quiet's arc is definitely worth the investment in bonding with her and some of the ♥♥♥♥ she does is incredibly cool, making her one of the all time best female characters in the series, which is saying a lot when MGS has by far, some of the best ladies in any game franchise ever. A game you will never forget, like a lost limb, pulsing in pain in its phantom outline... that still stands proud, despite its missing legs.

METAL GEAR SOLID V: The Phantom Pain — игра сложная, противоречивая и во многом незавершённая.

awesome game. Hate the fact that deployment costs don't get refunded if you don't use the items after exiting the AOO. I had a lot of fun getting really cool new items, and it felt like the game encouraged me to try out new gear that I spend money and time and resource unlocking, but really the way you play is by getting the 1st star tranq gun, 1st star silenced auto rifle and maybe a tranq or silenced rifle if you're feeling ambitious. Also remember that fulton recovery can be put back to 1 star and reduces a lot of costs

«I won't see you end as ashes. You're all diamonds...»

This game is without a doubt the apex of the action stealth genre and nothing even comes close. MGSV has always been one of my favourite games, and I am heavily biased towards this game. Unlike many others I really enjoyed the story in this game and the accompanying gameplay that this game provides only adds to the spectacle. People who critique the story or dog on it for being the "weakest story entry in the series" may or may not be correct, but it doesn't in any capacity detract from this game whatsoever. The gameplay of MGSV is borderline perfect, there is absolutely nothing like it, the only things like it are derived from it. The controls are responsive & snappy, Boss moves as you would expect him to and in quick fashion with little restriction to how fast or slow you can play the game. The game being an open-world makes it by far the least linear entry in the series and it provides the player with freedom unlike any other game to explore alternate paths, do side-quests, bonus objectives etc. It's open ended to the point where the game could become trivial with even half-decent gameplay, but that's where it excels the most. This game has the advantage of player expression and it does it in spades, whatever you did to clear an outpost someone did in dozens of other ways, straightforward or elaborate, and that's why it's so good. The choices the game provides to the player, while not the most plentiful nowadays, were designed in such a way where the limitation seems non-existent. This game's controls were so good to the point that one of the most popular multiplayer games ripped off the controls & movement of this game (Helldivers 2). The absolutely ginormous variety of weaponry & equipment at your disposal, along with attachments for said weapons, even if they look ridiculous, add so much to the feeling of the game once you're deployed. You can make the absolute perfect rifle, shotgun, any loadout you need for any specific niche you need to fill. The level design in this game for an early-open world game is as you'd expect, a bit empty. There's no two ways about it, this game is akin to Far Cry (Drive) 2, a lot of the map is just a big open desert with some convoys going back and forth, however outposts and mission areas are designed very well, to the point where I kind of wish that the game had more facilities, industrial areas like MGS2, or urban areas like MGS4. The game is by far at it's peak in these areas, where there's loads of buildings, cover, guards everywhere and less terrain to abuse without any hit to the gameplay. I think the only thing that would've completed the package in totality is more scripted events ala Ground Zeroes with the truck being board-able to ride into a facility and similar things like that to abuse and play around with. Overall, the boring parts of the map travelling can be solved with the cardboard box transport thing, which can teleport you between points of interest whilst keeping immersion. The aesthetic of this game is just awesome, whilst the PMC that Boss runs is a bit unrealistic, the aesthetic of it certainly isn't. It really captivates you in that 80s environment, whilst still keeping true to the sci-fi aspects of MGS that it's known for, with more advanced technology being seen as prototypes, etc. I absolutely love and eat up the aesthetic of this game, and with some mods it can make the kind of goofy uniforms of the Diamond Dogs seem genuinely legit, and I feel like this game could've excelled in showing off a more caggy, yet still conforming to the sci-fi feel of MGS without any detraction from it. Personal preference aside, the building of the PMC and it's growth is far more organic and convincing than it was in Peace Walker, and is a significant improvement from it in every single way, from the narrative to the characters and their build-ups, everything. Even your soldiers have some secrets they talk about whilst on the platforms, there isn't a single other game that displays such a unique competency in making a military leader setting genuinely feel real. The story of this game is a point of controversy and it requires a detailed look to fully grasp it, although it's not roll-slop levels of garbage, where the story doesn't exist, and is told through """""environmental storytelling""""". The story can easily be grasped in a single play-through without any sort of guidance or pointers in regards to the direction of the story, and since it starts relatively early in the timeline, some prior knowledge may not even be necessary to start playing the game to be invested. The game still leaves secrets and unanswered questions, whether that's on purpose, or because the story was rushed because of tension between the lead developer and Konami, I couldn't answer it better than anyone else could. Ultimately it is my favourite, even if it is a point of contention. Everything surrounding the story displays it in such a fashion where, despite it's flaws, like not using real-world names for weaponry and locations as MGS was known for, which detracts a good amount from the immersion, still somehow speaks to me the most. All personal of course, it's just the most memorable story to me by far, perhaps because of the controversies, conspiracy theories, or because of it being an enjoyable and amazing narrative idea. The game, in general, excels in everything it does, and I have no complaints. The content of the game is plentiful, there is much to explore, unlock and experiment with, with tons of main story missions and an enormous amount of side content, MGSV on it's own is a game packed full of content. However, there are still some critiques of this game I must add: Quiet. probably the worst MGS character ever conceived. Only exists for goonbait (along with the posters). Everything related to her in the story could've been sidestepped completely and told in a different way, or simply plays out and the game tries to tie relevance to her. When the story hits you with a 4D chess move, you answer back, and the game is already placing down a new chessboard to play on. Quiet is annoying to play with, annoying in the story, unnecessary and generally just garbage. Fictionalised naming schemes, guns, vehicles, etc. Everything in the game represents a fictionalised equivalent of an already existing thing. For example the famous Stinger anti-air missile launcher is represented as the "Honey Bee" and bears a very odd resemblance to it. There aren't any Sikorsky H-60's, instead in their steed is the "UTH-66 Blackfoot", to name a few examples. Some of the guns also just look horrendous and ugly, like the """AK's""" that this game has. Trash DLC + microtransactions, is this really still necessary?! For a full price game too, you might as well be offering an extra "rip off my customer" button below your game's purchasing options. The game has a very well designed online base-raiding / defending system in which you can buy extra platforms to get more resources. What do these extra platforms cost? "MB coins", which are basically the gem equivalent of any other mobile game. They offer you 2000 for ten euros, seriously, who is buying this? The outfit DLCs I can understand, maybe. But they are unnecessary, add them as rewards, not as stupid paid-for garbage. The final con? Probably the last good MGS game that will exist.

got 100+ hours on this on console, still a blast to play over 10 years later. There is the issue of the game not really being finished, ie Episode 51 being cut from the game, though the "unfinished" state of the game is greatly exaggerated. This is the best metal gear gameplay wise (in my humble opinion) Worth the money and on sale pretty often, you wont regret it.

*My gear is SOLID* I have played Metro Exodus and GTA, but compared to the game engine of MGSV, it pales in efficiency. My laptop can run this in medium quality using iGPU, thats how optimized it is. Gameplay wise there is plenty to go about and you will not get tired of the options. Story slowly opens up new gameplay components allowing a fairly small learning curve. Lot of secrets and base management to work with when you are not in the field. I got this at a discount, but I will now recommend this even with full price. 10/10

"I'm afraid it's been... nine years." METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN has been a great experience for me. First thoughts were that the game would absolutely be a blast, and, while it blew the roof out of my expectation's house, the game is quite quirky with its bosses. This game is basically just another MGS except with better stealth mechanics and insanely weird (yet great at the same time!). Campaign Haven't completely finished the campaign yet, so I'll follow up on that by editing this review when I finish the story, but this campaign is absolutely great. I love silently taking down my enemies because it's just the best thing to do with them (kicking them and pointing a gun at them as they wake up so they surrender, just to Fulton extract them)! It's also very sandbox-like but not quite, as the fighting area is incredibly massive. Graphics & Mechanics The graphics are just like any other AAA game, I don't really know what you'd expect. The stealth mechanics, however, are on another level entirely, as camos work great to hide yourself and blend in with the environment, while shadows literally give you away. This game will keep you on your toes, and if that's what you like, then I heavily recommend playing this. Can't forget the memetic engineering! This game is just ripe for memes, as, with the new Duran Duran soundtrack, anyone can make banger edits of Snake and other characters. This game has so much potential, and Konami decided to put it to waste by firing Kojima while he worked on the game. Conclusion I think this game will definitely be great for you to play. Might be a little expensive for some of you, but you can always just wait for a sale so it goes a little cheaper. Overall, this game is completely one of the best games I've ever played in my life, and I'd put it next to the Half-Life series. See ya!
