While left for dead 2 is essentially a direct upgrade, this game is still awesome and I can appreciate what it did to pave the way for left for dead 2. The characters, maps, and everything are just some of the best valve content especially since they were brought to left for dead 2. Even if you went through the lfd1 content in lfd2 still give it a try or maybe go for some achievements.

Even though I personally think that L4D2 has infinitely more replayability due to the steam workshop and combining L4D1 into it with the original survivors and campaigns, I still believe that L4D1 is just as much of a masterpiece alongside the sequel. I've already left my review for L4D2, so I'll just copy some of the points from it since they can also apply to the original game as well. There's so much attention to detail put into nearly every aspect of the game, and the graphics quality that really goes to show just how ahead of its time this game really was, especially with the voice acting and facial animations. What really makes the game shine is several key factors in my opinion. The storytelling element is unique in the sense that it doesn't outright tell you the story of Left 4 Dead unless you've watched the cinematic trailer. Outside of that you only begin to learn about what really happened to our survivors and the state of the world through dialogue between the survivors and context clues throughout every chapter of each campaign, such as the environment and graffiti, primarily in saferooms. The special infected and the infected AI as a whole. Every campaign will always be different, even if you've racked up tens of thousands of hours on the game. Nothing is restricted either. No battle pass, no leveling system, or anything of the sort. You could buy the game right now and hop into the last campaign on the highest difficulty if you felt like it (though I don't recommend it) it's very easy to get into and quickly learn the gameplay mechanics. The real challenge is learning how to combat all of the infected, where to watch out for tank spawns, where weapons, supplies and health items can appear, and mastering the higher difficulties all the way up to expert and maybe even expert realism. The game is great for solo playthroughs or co-op with friends or complete strangers. Overall, I highly recommend getting both games and giving the original a run. Each are phenomenal in their own rights.

༒ ─────── ★ VERDICT ★ ─────── ༒ STORY ★★★★★ VISUALS ★★★★★ ATMOSPHERE ★★★★★ GAMEPLAY ★★★★★ SOUND/OST ★★★★☆ The kind of game that everybody has should have experienced at least once in their life ★ THE GOOD • A still semi active small community • Addictive gameplay • Game of the year for a reason, a true staple of zombie gaming • Has held up well over the years • A dear childhood game for a lot of us ♥ † THE BAD • surival grind has killed my sleep schedule • Some grindy and seemingly impossible achievements with a smaller community of players (still do-able) • Bots are pretty useless making things like survival impossible to do without other players • occaisonal bugs ༒ 10/10 ༒ Gorey. Addictive. Worth every second of playing.

Highly Recommended. 9/10* Used to play this game a lot with my daughter in the xbox 360, we didn't even had internet at that time and we just played locally in split-screen. Visually the game still looks decent even almost two decades later, the audio is also great, but where not here just for the looks, the game is fun as heck, is simple and easy to understand, just survive the zombies hordes and move from point A to point B. The game goes really cheap on sales, so its a must for every steam player.

For a game that came out in 2008 it still looks fantastic. The graphics combined with the music and sound effects create an atmosphere unlike any other. You may be excited to slaughter hordes of the undead, but deep down you know that one wrong move might turn it all around. Yeah it might be difficult getting used to the lack of melee weapons after first playing L4D2 but it's manageable. This and its sequel are the best shooter zombie games as well as one of the best co-op games ever made and I will die on this hill.

For an older game this game is quite detailed and makes modern games look like ♥♥♥♥♥♥ trash the zombies eyes glow in the dark it's hard to see in the dark you can watch them vomit when you shoot them they GO ♥♥♥♥♥♥ DOWN so there's no bullet sponges minus tanks but they supposed to be hard to kill but not TOO hard to kill game requires you teammates to help you graphics are dated but this is a well executed game regardless I have spoken.

Oh just one of the best games to ever exist. iconic. (HIGHLY OPINIONATED) PROS: -Original campaign map designs -achievable achievements -darker atmosphere than the 2nd -fun solo or with friends -no playthrough will be the same as the last -no good guy Nick -legs without mods -mostly untouched by updates and workshop -unlimited shove (campaign) CONS: -no melee -AI Zoey is EVIL -shorter than the 2nd (the 2nd game has all the maps from 1 via versus ports...) -no defib, adrenaline, bile jar, etc. -Slightly lesser graphics -settings configuration and or use of commands can be a pain sometimes -poor server browser

It's a matter of opinion, but I think this game is way better than the sequel. There's something so cozy about the graphics.

It has obviously fewer features than the second one and shows it clearly. Overall, this game started the L4D essence in the zombies genre. Obviously, knowing that this game has some age on it, it has some glitches and its constraints, hence the occasional rage x). Besides that, this game is great :))) it guides you through the story (if you follow the map's order), has its awareness on giving the consumer what he wants in a game like having some good time with your friends, pc-friendly, an affordable price, etc... and support by both devs and community. It's a big yes for me ;))

The Special Infected. The best aspect of the gameplay by far, special infected provide unique dangers for the players, all of them encouraging you to stay sharp and play with your team, as well as opening up dangerous combinations with one-another. For example, a Smoker dragging a survivor far away from a battle with a Tank can put the survivors in a really tricky spot, and you'll struggle to reach a grappled survivor while being blinded and surrounded by a Boomer's mob. Specials also have their own sound cues and music tracks which elevate their presence in the game, and are taught to you well by the educative and energetic intro cinematic. The Music. Speaking of music, who could possibly talk about the pros of this game without bringing it up? It's not afraid to have tracks with harsher and more distressing sounds than I've found in a lot of other horror games. The danger alarm in the horde theme is one of the biggest examples, digging its way into your ear while the waves of zombies try to overwhelm you. The Witch theme uses repetitive piano notes and an eerie choir to create an unsettling tune that urges you to respect her presence, the Hunter sound cues include grating strings that immediately grab your attention, even ambient tracks include less "pleasant" noises that feel at home in the dread of the apocalypse. Other parts of the OST are nice too, like the Tank theme and some of the map intros. The Maps. There are some pretty cool settings in this game, such as the foggy forests of Blood Harvest and Dead Air with its big plane crash, but even the more standard maps are filled with a lot of environmental storytelling to be immersed in and carry a sufficiently creepy tone. Interactable aspects of the environment are a nice addition, being able to blast through doors and send objects flying among other things. One of the highlights of any map in this game though is the saferoom, as it's often littered with notes and conversations from previous survivors. The best ones are obviously when they're funny, like all the messages making fun of the love note that a lady wrote, but there's also some nice worldbuilding and interesting dialogue to read over. The Attention To Detail. There's a lot of variety in animations for the zombies in Left 4 Dead. The ragdolls and death animations are very dynamic, often reflecting the exact place you shot them and even interacting with the environment at times. Zombies have many idle behaviours you can observe such as vomiting, sitting/laying down, and even fighting each other. When playing on different maps, their clothing will be adapted to fit the setting as well. Some of this doesn't sound too exciting, and I'll admit that this wasn't something I registered much until it got pointed out by some video essay I decided to watch, but you can tell that a lot of care was put into visual feedback and an authentic feel for the game. The Versus Mode. This one is much less pure praise and more of a recognition because in truth Versus is potential mode. Attempting to coordinate takedowns as the special infected was the most engaged that I felt playing Left 4 Dead. Even the survivor rounds still feel more fun when you have to play around the strategies of real people. I would love to play more of it and form a deeper opinion on its inclusion in the game, but the issue is that actually trying to play it properly is a bit of a nightmare. I found a full server maybe once a day at best, never actually staying full because you'll always get people leaving mid-match. Players will also get kicked, or fight over which map to play on. As far as any of my actual gripes with the game go, I was disappointed with the lack of weapon variety in this game. Only getting 3 primary weapons (2 having upgrades that I wouldn't really count as separate) and 1 upgradable secondary isn't very interesting and weakens the game's replayability. You can easily have tried out every offensive option in just the first campaign you play. The AI teammates, while more competent and balanced than I ever expected, also have some issues where they'll get stuck, be too busy shooting commons while you're dying to a Hunter or just not come back to help you if they're further in the map. Playing with bots can be pretty rough if you're not running the easier difficulties, especially because they won't pick up throwables. That's about it though, this game is pretty light on faults for me.

A childhood game, timeless. 10/10, no notes. I prefer to play Left 4 Dead 2, but the first one just has such a vibe and atmosphere to it that you'd need addons to recreate in the second one. The sounds design, the art style of the guns, the viewmodels...

What a great relaxing game. I truly enjoyed this game. Its concept is simple as it gets, kill zombies and move through. Some zombies are specials that need specific tactics. Somehow that's enough for me to get hooked. It practically runs on even the lowest amount of power a pc can generate. Don't think that lessens the experience since those low graphics actually suit the game. I never raged at this game nor felt annoyed by it. It was good enough that if i was having a bad day, this could somehow make it better. I would recommend to purchase left4dead2 directly instead of left4dead since 2 has all the content of 1 while also having access to a dedicated mods community. Didn't know that so i got this. Not much of a regret though considering it's peak.

This game is great piece of gaming culture and it aged well. The recipe for this cocktail is simple: Source-game vibe with nice graphic, rocksolid coop gameplay formula and on top of that "dynamic light from your shoots and flashlight" and "you can see legs of your model". 2008year Good times!

I have always liked this game and was anxious to get it again. I enjoy the old graphics and I like it. The hoards of enemies are fun and always liked this edition. The game says it supports xbox controller...but its not working for me. I wont allow me to look around properly, it has wont look up and sometimes it only let me stare at the ceiling. On the PC with keyboard is better, but i would like it if the my xbox controller worked properly.
