I have been grappling with this review, because how could I possibly give a thumbs down to such an amazing game? A better question, is how I could give a "recommended" rating to a game where my prevailing feeling is 'wishing for it to be done so I can play something I actually like'. Hollow Knight: Silksong has a lot of improvements over the original, and some downgrades, but I think at its core, my problem is that its sensibilities are meant to appeal to a very specific type of player of the original and not much else. For me, while I enjoyed the challenges and boss fights in Hollow Knight, they were more like spice on the actual meat of the game: exploring a beautiful and mysterious world. When I got stuck on something, I would simply leave and come back later when I was stronger. In Silksong, it feels very much like the devs saw this kind of over leveling as a problem to be fixed. There is very little meta progression, and every nook and cranny of the world is filled with challenges meant to have you stuck on them for days before you progress. Rarely in Silksong will you find a powerful upgrade just hidden in some room out of the way, or at the end of a little puzzle. Now, for every charm or shard, there is a 5 stage gauntlet with a mini boss at the end, or a boss with a long walk past several difficult enemies. And when all is said and done, said rewards feel much less useful as the progression is much more horizontally focused in Silksong, most of those upgrades enabling different gameplay styles that don't feel much stronger, even situationally. I have not finished the game yet, and I think I will take a break, as I am getting very sour on it. I really hope the devs curb some of these issues in future updates so those of us who are a bit less masochistic can enjoy the game as well. The world is vast and beautiful, but for now it's just not worth all the baggage for me.

I've obtained 100% game completion but am still missing a few achievements (steel souls, speed and true hunter). It was an incredibly amazing sequel to hollow knight. I'm not sure how to put into words my experience in a way that justifies the game or is fair to other people. Is Silksong truly harder than Hollow Knight? That's a good question and I don't think there's a simple answer. I think the fairest answer is that they are completely different games in the same universe created by Team Cherry. If you only play Silksong like Hollow Knight it will be more difficult. But if you embrace Silksong for what it offers you, I think you will find a new love for it that can coexist alongside Hollow Knight too. I absolutely love silksong and, dare I say, I love it more than hollow knight. Silksong symbolizes my growth from a rather terrible unskilled gamer that struggled even properly jumping from platform to platform in the beginning section of Hollow Knight. I wasn't good and it would have been painful to watch. Hollow Knight is a place I grew from nothing to horrible to eventually 100% all achievements, completing radiant hall of gods. I also needed more so I did all bindings in pantheons. Playing Silksong, completing a gauntlet, I remember putting my controller down and exclaiming, "Wow, I love this game so much!" Who would have known that someone like me could actually complete the deeds I have done in Hollow Knight and Silksong?! Initially, I was worried about silksong because people said it was frustrating, difficult, punishing, and that Team Cherry made gauntlets, runbacks, and 2 mask damage which will make you want to stop playing the game. Admittedly, when I first started I went "the wrong way" and I hadn't gotten a key traversal ability. This made traversal in this optional area a nightmare. I also didn't really "need" to go there yet. While there. I made it to a gauntlet that I definitely should not have been doing without my traversal ability. That gauntlet plus the runback to it definitely made me frustrated. That's probably what made me stop playing the first time. That along with I was already in the middle of playing another game when silksong released that I wanted to finish. In retrospect, I wouldn't go there first and will avoid the area on my speedrun/steelsoul until I do get the key traversal ability. As for the 2 mask damage, I initially was upset about that too. However, I just beat the game (100% completion) and I was thinking. I would never have beaten the final boss SPOILER Lost Lace as quickly if this game was Hollow Knight and not Silksong. I think I would have taken many more attempts. Why? Because Hornet is so incredibly agile and acrobatic. Most importantly, I can heal quickly and while airborne. I recorded the fight I finally beat the game with and it was far less impressive than the fight I beat Hollow Knight with. However, I'd argue it was also more fun because of Hornet's quick movement. I took so much damage in Silksong at the end but I was able to heal while remaining mobile, switching between being aggressive and defensive until healthy. I never really was able to do that in every fight in Hollow Knight. There were some fights I knew I could heal up in Hollow Knight but in Silksong? It's almost every fight I have an opportunity to weave (get it?) heals in while fighting. In Hollow Knight, I usually just fought until I died and only in Pantheons with bindings, radiant fights or speedruns did I actually use my heals (if I messed up) but in silksong healing became a natural part of my rotation during combat. I always sought out heals since they were so accessible. That to me, is the reason I'd say the 2 masks of damage make sense. Lastly, I know originally when comparing the game to hollow knight, I was mildly upset that I couldn't heal 1 mask at a time because I hated the silk waste of overhealing without it not costing less silk (or refunding it). However, after finally beating the game, I feel like that point doesn't matter as much to me anymore especially if you have 3 blue slots filled with specific options. In conclusion, I love Silksong and it is absolutely worth the purchase but only if you commit to playing it with an open mind. If you struggle and find yourself frustrated, you should consider trying to go a different path because there might be an easier one. Once you finish the game, you could try harder paths earlier but for a first time I wouldn't recommend it. That being said, you will die, often times a lot before "it just clicks" in bosses, gauntlets, the environment, and maybe even to your electricity going out or your controller dying. That is definitely something you have to accept. But if you look at the game and ask yourself if it's worth it? I absolutely think it's worth it. It was an incredibly amazing ride just like Hollow Knight was. Silksong is definitely one of my absolute favorite games ever and Team Cherry deserves the positive review for the game. Wonderful job Team Cherry! Thank you!!!

I really wanted to like Silksong but the game wont let you have a moment of fun. I played HK a few years ago and i enjoyed it very much just like other metro/souls games so i came in with high hopes. Don't get me wrong, the game is worth the money, even full price, it has tons of content and stuff BUT.. i can't stress enough how terribly made the hitboxes are, how the parry doesn't work half the time and how inconsistent the movement/parkour is. For a game that focuses so much in precision it's unforgivable. Another issue i had with it was the ''lets put parkour everywhere just for the sake of calling it a ''hard'' game ''. Generally its not a hard game, it's a terribly annoying one. My biggest issue with it were the bosses. Their attacks felt random and not like ''dancing'' . They spamattack, they can stunlock you, most of them run around dodging you and parrying you and usually without a warning. Their moves look alike and are confusing for a game that you are supposed to read the enemy. Many times it felt like they responded to your buttons, canceling a move (while you can't) and attack the direction you will go. Unless your playstyle is ''2 hits and wait for 15 sec'' everything else is punishable. Also many many of them spawn minions or have a random arena before them ? On top of that add the 10 second animation for their spawn and the runback and the benches locations that are disgusting. They dont respect your time. Small enemies are also made to dodge, run away, teleport, fly and have a ranged attack ? They added a lot of cool things, like crests (movesets) and tools that contribute a lot but also limit you to certain playstyles. The exploration was ok and not too difficult. The world around you had some storytelling but mostly felt blunt. The music/sounds and graphics were amazing. The story was beautiful and way more clear than HK. The cities and NPCs were very well made and written. I finished everything before leaving this review (even the unnecessary ones) just so i can be 100% fair and honest about the review. The only reason i kept going and came back after a break was the completionist in me not letting me chill. I will be playing future content but i cannot recommend it as a ''good game''. I know people wont agree but the glaze and fanboying is over the top with this one.

Silksong is not a kind game. And I mean this in a few different ways. It's not kind to anyone not seeking challenging combat- it's tuned for players who beat the pantheons in the first game, and there's no measures to mitigate that. As a matter of accessibility, it's unfair. It's not kind to anyone making mistakes, or being rusty or careless- so much of the difficulty comes in the extreme price of failure, the amount of double damage and the speed at which it can be meted out makes for a game that demands consistency and punishes with having to run through the same gauntlets again and again and again. And it's not kind to Hornet- the specific cruelties she is put through, the other female characters are put through, feel less like the commentary on mothers and daughters that it wanted to be (as a mirror to the first game's themes of fathers and sons) and more like their gender can be exploited to substitute effective, nuanced storytelling for increased suffering. The entire abortion side quest is gendered horror with zero thematic payoff. It's not a kind game, and it's not saying anything by being unkind. There's something fairly good here. I'm just not sure it's worth it.

When I started hollow knight, the prequel to this game, I inititally dismissed it because I don't like platforming, but I got convinced to give it a second try and I ended up really enjoying it, it's one of my fondest memories in my gaming library. I bought this game, the first 2 hours were just like back in hollow knight.....but then the problems started. Platforming: worse than hollow knight, feels clunky, like I'm missing something, I think the progression at which you unlock abilities is too slow paced, for example it took me about 10h to get the ability to wall jump Exploring: once again feels worse than hollow knight, I don't really feel that rewarded for my time, the only real good thing I got from exploring so far was wanderer crest, aside from that just borderline junk tools and trinkets. To get a nail upgrade, it's not enough just to find the item, no, you now must go on a goose chase and collect 5 different things..... Bosses: annoying, feels like not much thought went behind them, at least in act 1, the pattern seems to be that to make a difficult boss or area you simply fill it up with enemies so that they block your path and u simply collide into them. Personal experience example, I was very close to just give up on the game after encountering savage beastfly, not because the boss was difficult, I found him very easy and I beat him after about 10 ish tries, but because of the enemies that he spawns, sometimes 2 at once, that simply block you from dodging him, why did they do this? Because the boss is boring, and they realized that, and for some reason they deiced to make him "difficult" by spawning adds without thinking of the consequences. A boss like widow on the other hand, was very well made and I had fun fighting her, I think I even died less to her than to this random fly protecting a crest. Flying enemies: single handedly almost made me uninstall the game multiple times, they are often in your way of platforming or walkbacks, forcing you two choices: you try to fight the unreachable, annoying enemy that is tankier than a land enemy, some of them even taking up to 4-5 hits, or you ignore them and continue, accept the colison damage, and start the boss/go through the paltforming handicapped The game tries desperately to mimic a dark souls experience and fails misserably at it, the gameplay designers completely forgot simple basic concepts like if an enemy is flying/mobile it needs to have less health, runbacks feel unsatisfying, progression feels unsatisfying, platforming would be alright if you didn't colide into 100+ hp trash mobs constantly.....I feel like they are overcompensating for all the useless situational junk and tools they throw at you, they made the game wit the idea that "look you have all this junk in the game that you can use! so it's not that hard, in fact, it's too easy, have everyone deal 2x damage cuz u can just throw a pin at them and refund it from their corpse anyway" The game had so much success, but it could've been so much higher if they didn't forget how to design games between the 2 games, also big L for locking double jump behind a mid to late game area and platforming on the level of white palace but with the added ticking clock DOT(white palace, from what I remember, was completely optional on the other hand, AND easier.....since you didn't have a DOT killing you by waiting around)

The game is very well made, has an engaging story with endearing characters, feels fantastic to play, and tremendously builds upon what Hollow Knight achieved. So, why the thumbs down? The game has two key problems. Firstly, a trollish approach to trial and error. It's not obvious at first because it isn't exactly a thing at first. But as the game progresses and gets harder, much of that difficulty is artificial. Instead of just being an enemy with a less forgiving pattern, it's a gotcha jumpscare of an enemy you couldn't see or a new trap mechanic that's much less obvious. It's a device that takes your currency for a single use bench. Or a trap under a bench that hurts you. It doesn't give the feeling of playing a difficult game, it gives the feeling of playing a game where the devs are smugly trolling you. The second problem is a lack of visual options. The game is beautiful to look at, but this also includes a lot of visual clutter. Visual clutter that can't be reduced. The game runs lightly, thankfully. But for those of us with visual impairments that can be a problem. Particularly when a boss encounter required for continuing the story after 30 hours of playtime uses full screen flashing effects as an attack pattern. Without more options to further reduce or potentially eliminate these kinds of visual effects, a person with epilepsy might be surprised they can't continue well after a refund period is even reasonable. Go play Hollow Knight if you haven't. It's a fantastic game and honestly one of the absolute best of the genre. And... maybe give this one a miss.

It has maximized the parts of Hollow Knight that where not fun and minimized the fun Boss Fights. The Gauntlets only reward you with the abillity to progress which just means you find more of them. Hornets abillities are all underpowered or tied to depleteble resources which means after a lot of tries in a gountlet you can not use your tools anymore which makes them even harder. I just had a misserable experience in the game and asked myself what the point of countinuation is. I came to the conclucion there is none and wish to refund this game. But I cant so do your self a favor and dont play it.

I recently started Nine Sols again. Fir some reason I took a break in that game and in Silk Song fairly towards the end of the game. When I continued with Nine Sols I was surprised how fast I was able to get back in, I think I was even better at it now. I beat the last boss with all it's three phases. Even though the spike in difficulty felt a bit off. When I got back into Silk Song I was surprised how sluggish and slow it felt. But I got back into it. Defeated the last boss of chapter two first try. Two times in a row because I didn't know the fleas were important to get to chapter 3... And then it came back, all the things I hate about this game. Team Cherry are trolls. And they had a lot of good will with me because of the first hollow night, the price of this game and the fact they are indie. But everytime I start to enjoy this game some bs is layed before me. I hate the ammount of instant death spikes after screen transitions. I hate running after flying enemies that always keep slightly out of range. I hate the runbacks. I hate the ammount of gauntlet with its randomness. All of this doesn't make the game hard, it makes it tedious. This game does not respect your time. For me one of the most fun parts of metdroidvanias is traversal and team cherry keeps some of the traversal abilities behind a resource cost. This game looks beautiful and has really nice characters in it but it all gets soured by how much I hate so many of their game design decisions. Probably will continue torturing myself with it though, sunken cost fallacy and so on.

4/10. Everything is half-baked, unbalanced, and full of lazy design choices that punish players for no reason. Don't buy it unless it's 75% off. --- #### 🎨 Visuals & Art Direction ✅ ‌Peak scene detail‌ - The moss breathes, that grimy latrine practically reeks, the snow peaks bite with cold, and cave light looks so natural you can feel it. ✅ ‌10/10 animations‌ - Player, monsters, NPCs all move buttery smooth, zero janky stutters. ✅ ‌Banger OST‌ - Never feels out of place, locks perfectly into the game's gritty eerie vibe. ❌ ‌Way too dark‌ - 90% of the screen is low-saturation black/grey/mud brown. You can't tell what's interactive, half the time you can't even find the path forward. ❌ ‌Fake Chinese localization‌ - Just random jumbled Chinese characters, zero useful guidance for players. --- #### ⚔️ Gameplay & Combat ✅ ‌Tight input feel‌ - Light attack recovery frames are snappy, exactly how they should be. ❌ ‌HP bloat + garbage rewards‌ - After your first area run, every fight leaves you with less resources than you started with. ❌ ‌Flying ranged spam‌ - Half the enemies are flying mobs with ranged attacks, you have literally zero good counterplay. ❌ ‌Dodge spamming broken‌ - Monsters dodge nonstop, break your combos, drag fights out forever, zero room for mistakes. ❌ ‌Unkillable flying glitches‌ - They fly to the top of the map where you can't reach, pelt you with shots you can't hit back. ❌ ‌Hitboxes don't match textures‌ - Half the damage you take comes from nowhere, you never even see the hit coming. ✅ ‌Only good boss is a Atomic Heart Twin Dancers ripoff‌ - That's the only fight that feels fast, fun, and well-paced. ❌ ‌Lazy unskippable encounter mode‌ - Just random monster spam, zero creativity. If they buff enemies, they should give us better tools too. ❌ ‌No real-time saves in 2026?‌ - Checkpoint-only saves are a 20-year-old hardware compromise. This is pure devs being unskilled/lazy. ❌ ‌They broke the universal save point safety rule‌ - This is such an obvious basic feature, did the devs seriously not even think of it? ❌ ‌Permanently broke‌ - You can never afford to boost attack power or unlock new items/skills. ❌ ‌Hidden double damage + half HP‌ - Most attacks hit for 2x damage, your actual HP is only half what the UI says. ❌ ‌Upgrades are completely useless‌ - The red/yellow/blue amulet equivalents do literally nothing even when maxed, zero gameplay difference. ❌ ‌Skills do garbage damage‌ - Total waste of resources. ✅ ‌Mid-air hover heal is great‌ - Total game-changer in areas with only ground enemies. ❌ ‌Healing is punishingly bad‌ - Only 3 HP per use, super long animation, get hit mid-heal and you lose all the HP you gained with no item refund. ✅ ‌Pseudo-open world replayable zones‌ - Split into distinct areas that are fun to loop back to. ❌ ‌Zero quest guidance‌ - You never know if you should keep exploring the current zone or move forward. ❌ ‌Collectible interlock hell‌ - Half the items are locked behind late-game skills, you have to waste time re-running old zones you already cleared. ❌ ‌No full map visibility‌ - You have to buy maps, and they only show areas you've already walked through. No route planning, just running in circles. ❌ ‌Act 3 is hidden behind a guide wall‌ - 1/3 of the full game content is impossible to find without looking up a tutorial. This is a full-price paid product, they should have to warn you on the store page.

Nothing that hasn't already been said before, pretty sure I made it a decent way into the game before Bilewater and the High Halls Gauntlet robbed me of the will to continue Likes 1. Movement: the game feels really good to play, controls are tight and I know that if I miss a jump or something it was me and not the game 2. Soundtrack: another set of bangers. Cogwork Core is my favorite 3. Crests: I like being able to swap move sets, very good addition to the game Dislikes 1. Enemy Gauntlets: not a fan, they start off tolerable, fun even at times, but eventually it just gets annoying when you realize there is about 1 per area 2. Damage: whole lot of things hit for 2 masks of damage so it really only feels like you have 3 masks until about Act 2 where it then feels like you have 4 masks instead. I don't see the point 3. Costs: I swear you have to pay for almost everything in this game. Some kind of Capitalistic/Religious social commentary or something. not a fan 4. Silk Use: I think it was an odd choice to tie the mid to late game platforming into Silk. They mitigate it a bit by always allowing you to regenerate 1 tab of Silk but when you need to chain multiple clawlines together and you don't have any Silk you just get to fall or stall until you get that 1 tab of silk back. I wanted to like this game but I do not and if I could refund it, I would.

There's a lot of good game here! What can I say? Most of you who are interested already got this one, but for anyone new here: 2D Metroidvania Soulslike with amazing tight combat and really fun non-linear exploration. Really good bosses and challenging combat rooms. Have to admit some of the gauntlets (High Halls) were kinda frustrating, but oh so good to finally clear. The bosses walked that tight rope where they were pretty difficult, but never really frustrating either. The penultimate fight especially felt good to overcome, it was like a brick wall at first, but eventually it felt like I earned mastering it. Amazing game, can't recommend it enough. The price is good too, just buy it!

Hollow Knight Silksong, is a massvie world similer to Hollow Knight but with much more things. I started to play a little while after I beaten and fell in love with Hollow Knight, and after the first few hours I WAS CAPTIVATED by the lore, NPCs, melee, soundtracks, and graphics. this game is very easy to find what to do next, and is also very easy to pick up where you left off. this game EXCELS the first and connects to it, by being much harder and longer. I loved playing this game sooo much and i thank Team Cherry for making a masterpiece for such a low price. I recommed this game to people who have a lot of free time (and time to take away from doom scrolling), who what a deep story and to feel satisfied by completing one of the best games people suck at. :)
