Tips for new fans: 1) Don't forget about the tutorial (Training Room). I managed to miss it my first playthrough and didn't learn about some mechanics until I played Half-Life 2. 2) Take it slow. This game (and all the other Half-Lifes) greatly benefits if you take the time to explore and take in the many details of the environment. 3) You might want to turn the music volume up/SFX volume down? For me the default settings were so quiet I could barely hear the incredibly atmospheric soundtrack this game has. 4) Get ready for some 1998 jank. If you aren't used to games from this time period and/or don't have the patience for some frustrating moments, you might want to try Black Mesa (the fan remake) instead. I highly recommend playing both either way, and believe it or not this jank does give Half-Life a unique charm (although it might be easier to appreciate once you have more experience with the franchise). 5) You can get this and Half-Life 2 for under $5 on sale. I'm not kidding, this deal is so good it will make any other game over $10 seem not worth it. Enjoy :). This series is hands-down my favorite gaming experience of all time, even one of my favorite stories of all time, and I only first played it barely a year ago - so know that all the praise for this game isn't just nostalgia.

As someone playing Half-Life for the first time in 2026, I came away disappointed. The first quarter of the game genuinely impressed me. The atmosphere, environmental storytelling, and seamless presentation made me understand why this game was so beloved. For a while, I honestly thought I was playing a future 9 or even 10 out of 10 for me. Unfortunately, that’s where my enjoyment peaked. As the chapters became larger and more complex, the game’s age became impossible for me to ignore. Navigation became frustrating, difficulty spikes felt punishing rather than rewarding, and progression often relied on wandering until I happened to find the correct path. There were several moments where I wasn’t challenged...I was simply frustrated. The game also suffers from design choices that haven’t aged well. Full disclosure, by the final chapters I ended up using cheats just to push through to the ending because I had stopped having fun. I completely respect Half-Life’s historical importance. It’s easy to see how influential it was in 1998, and I understand why it’s considered one of the most important shooters ever made. But historical significance and modern playability didn’t line up for me. If you’re interested in gaming history, it’s worth experiencing to see where so many ideas came from. But if you’re simply looking for a fun FPS to play in 2026, I honestly think your time is better spent elsewhere. I wanted to love this game. Instead, I finished it mostly out of respect for its legacy rather than because I was enjoying myself.

I first encountered this FPS classic around 2010-2011. Since then, I've honestly lost count of how many times I've finished this game; whenever I get bored, I find myself coming back to play it again. One of my favorite things about the game is the way it tells its story through environmental storytelling instead of boring cutscenes. It makes you feel like you're directly part of the events. For example, in the Blast Pit chapter, a security guard tells us that the Tentacles can't see us but can hear us, which is a small but effective example of environmental storytelling. The fact that the game tells us this through a character instead of simply putting it on the screen as text is really nice. The weapon and enemy variety is also one of the game's strengths. Being able to use different weapons like the Crossbow, Tau Cannon, and Submachine Gun, and encountering different enemies like Headcrabs, Houndeyes, and Alien Grunts keeps the gameplay fresh. I especially love the Bullsquid; for some reason, I think its sound resembles a Goregrind vocal, and that's why I like it even more. Then there's the AI of the HECU soldiers. It was incredible for its time. If you take cover, they'll throw grenades to force you out or work together to flank you. It's 2026, and this is something we still don't see in most modern games. Kelly Bailey's music is also one of the strongest parts of the atmosphere. It makes the game much more impactful during both tense moments and action-packed firefights. The Deathmatch mode is still enjoyable today thanks to its fast-paced and chaotic gameplay, and it is still actively played. Half-Life: Uplink, despite being short, presents the atmosphere and gameplay of the main game in a darker way. The part of the game I like the least, or rather hate, is the Xen chapters. The platforming sections slow the game's pace down way too much. Other than that, there is very little I can seriously criticize about the game. One of the biggest reasons Half-Life has remained popular for so many years is its mod support. Thanks to tools like the SDK and Hammer Editor, Valve enabled the creation of many projects such as Counter-Strike, Team Fortress Classic, Sven Co-op, They Hunger, and Cry of Fear. In my opinion, this is one of the biggest reasons why Half-Life still has an active community today. Even after all these years, it's still one of those games I keep coming back to and playing again and again. Half-Life isn't just an FPS classic; it's a game that influenced the development of the genre and still holds up today.

One of the best games of all time. This was my first FPS PC shooter I ever played, and I have loved it ever since. Not sure what I can say that has not been said already. My personal favorite game of all time, incredibly influential on my life, my taste in media, and my own creative pursuits. Nothing has ever blown my mind as much as playing this game for the first time in the early/mid 2000s Amazing movement, satisfying gunplay that still holds up decades later, so many weapons and enemy variety, amazing OST. If you have not played before, I HIGHLY recommend you try it out, if you can get past the dated 1998 graphics. A masterpiece of its time.

The best game of the 1990s, and the one that changed shooters forever. Playing it in 2026, the mechanics don't surprise you anymore. They became the standard a long time ago. What does impress me is that almost everything we take for granted today was invented here, nearly thirty years back. It opens with a tram ride through Black Mesa. A few minutes where you can do nothing but look around, and in that time the game shows you the entire facility and lays out its rules. After that the camera never leaves Gordon Freeman: no cutscenes between chapters, no change of perspective. The story is told through talking NPCs, half-heard conversations between scientists and guards, and announcements over the PA. It makes the whole thing feel like one continuous piece. It runs 8–10 hours, and the pacing is nearly flawless. You start with a crowbar and a pistol against small enemies, and the arsenal keeps growing alongside them. The marines deserve their own mention. They flank you, throw grenades into your cover, fall back under fire and call out to each other. An enemy that behaves like an enemy instead of a target was a revelation in 1998, and it still reads that way. A few chapters were rough. "On A Rail" dragged the most, with endless track switches and no clear sense of where you're headed. "Surface Tension" was the hardest to fight through, with open ground and nowhere to hide. And "Residue Processing" strips every weapon off you and sends you through machinery that wants you dead. Quicksaves kept me from losing my temper entirely. The weak spot is the final stretch. The story effectively stops with a few hours left, and what remains leans on platforming and a last fight that tests patience more than imagination. A shame, because up to that point the setting works. Black Mesa feels like an actual laboratory, with vents, storage rooms and offices, rather than an arena built for killing things. For a game from the last century that's genuinely impressive. I hit exactly one bug, during a scripted sequence where you're being carried somewhere: the level transition broke and I fell straight through the floor. Everything else ran clean. The graphics show the game's age, and that's fine. I came for a game from the late 90s, not for the visuals. Half-Life is worth your time if the history of the genre interests you and dated graphics don't bother you. The story and the way it's told haven't aged at all, and that's the part that ages slowest of all.

Half-Life - иммерсивная. - “Environment storytelling! Half-Life не затянута.

One of the best fps games ever made but god those last few chapters are just not fun. This game is at its best when you're gunning down armed militants. That's most of the game so it clearly knows this.

A revolutionary game. Half-Life is probably one of the most influential games of all time. It paved the way for the FPS genre and also brought immersion on a new level. And considering all this, the game was released in 1998, mind-blowing stuff.

I can understand that Half-Life was ground breaking when it released in 1998, but for me playing for the first time in 2026, I don't think it holds up too well. The gameplay was so frustrating due to a complete lack of guidance on mechanics. The parkour/platforming was horrible to control, and by the end I just wanted the whole thing to be over. I know that it was influential and inspired a lot of the most popular FPS/3D action games from the last 28 years, but it's not for me. I'm not ashamed to say I like a bit more handholding than Half-Life offers, and I'd actually like to be taught the buttons + mechanics and maybe even know what my current objective is. I don't need a map or a compass telling me where to go, I'd just like a bit more guidance so that I don't get stuck in a frustrating loop around a level to the point where I have to watch a playthrough to progress.

Firstly, and most crucially: The game is a relic of its time. I think every issue I had with the game—unclear paths, bugs, and janky controls—is just a consequence of the game being a revolutionary title from 1998. However, the “unclear paths” point brings me to my biggest takeaway from this game’s design: it forces you to be immersed in order to succeed. You need to think for yourself, try everything, and let people live if you want to receive their assistance. You aren’t just told exactly what to do at every moment and handheld down a path, like so many games do today. You need to figure out how to escape Black Mesa on your own. To that end, the game’s demanding of your immersion and concentration is probably my favorite thing about it. I looked up what to do several times, but in my opinion, every time I didn’t know where to go was just me being an idiot, except for two different occasions: first, me not obtaining a pistol at the start of Waste Processing because I didn’t follow the guard, leading me to do the whole chapter without it before googling the pistol’s location and restarting the chapter; and second, the flooding of the Lambda Core bugging so that it didn’t fill all the way because I turned the two valves in quick succession. Because of those two incidents, the only two changes I would make to this game are to have the guard die to the headcrabs he’s fighting, and to fix that bug with the flooding. Sure, the game sometimes aggravated me or bored me, but I cannot in good faith say that any other part of this game could be changed without worsening the final product overall. The game’s goal is to immerse you into its world and make you feel the exact amounts of fear, tension, and power that Freeman himself would feel; it accomplishes that pretty much flawlessly. After finally beating Half-Life for the first time, I get why it’s a legendary classic.

Half-Life begins with a tram ride through the incomprehensibly large and mysterious Black Mesa complex. To a new player, this five-or-so-minute sequence is a promise of an immersive world, a colossal underground network of laboratories and metal corridors and who knows what else. Every turned corner provides some new intrigue, asks some new question that the game may or may not answer later. There's a guy in a suit with a briefcase, staring. A scientist tries to pull a door open a little too desperately. Half-Life never stops doing this. It’s a game built upon showing you all of the things you’re not supposed to see. Black Mesa itself is a cavernous labyrinth of exhaust vents, pipelines, scaffolding, and elevator shafts that seem to go on infinitely below. There is a terrifying pervasive feeling throughout the game that something much bigger is going on, something that cannot be understood, and the seeds of that feeling are planted at the very start. But to protagonist Gordon Freeman, this intro is just another commute to the office. Freeman is a fascinating hero, managing to consistently surprise the player without saying a single word. What sort of background must this lab assistant have to be the absolute killing machine he is? Upon arriving to work, Freeman is told to put on his hazard suit, and while of course he knows exactly where that is, a new player doesn't have a clue. Right away, the dissonance between what the player knows vs. what the protagonist knows establishes Freeman as being competent and respected (necessary facets of the character if the entire plot is to be believable) while also introducing the kind of player agency and freedom that makes Half-Life so great. Freeman knows exactly where to go and what to do, but *I* get to explore. There’s no NPC nagging me about me where my suit is, no cutscene panning to it in the next room over. I've got to search around and find the thing. On a second playthrough, I can dash right over to my suit, sure, but I have to earn that. This scene is a microcosm of what makes the game feel so rewarding to play. Half-Life may be a very linear game, but I always felt like I was exploring. Whereas progression provides a feeling of freedom through self-paced exploration, it’s the brilliant combat that lets the player truly express themselves. I have not been into shooters for very long, but DOOM (the 1993 one) and Quake are some of my favorite games, period. And while they are by no means devoid of strategic gameplay, strategy there is more about keeping up pace, swapping weapons on the fly and retreating to grab a health pack real quick before running back in guns blazing. The entire language can be learned pretty quick. In Half-Life, even an empty room could pose a never-before-seen threat: a headcrab zombie crashes through an unassuming wall, for example. Scripted sequences like these never failed to surprise me and instill a sense of horror about whatever might come next. My favorite threats to deal with, though, were the ones you *could* see coming: the soldier rooms, lined with turrets and sandbag forts and stealth corridors and vantage points. In the spirit of Gordon Freeman, a nerd, these sequences require careful, deliberate planning. Do I toss a grenade to flush enemies out, maybe set some tripmines to lure them into? Do I stealthily take em out one-by-one via crossbow? Or can I actually save ammo by just picking off the guy manning the turret, then use it gun down the rest? Freeman’s weapons arsenal is so well-balanced, and enemy encounters so carefully constructed, that there are always a multitude of ways to approach these “combat puzzles” but never so much freedom that you don’t need to choose your approach carefully. And just about every weapon feels great to use. My favorite, the revolver, can take most enemies out at long-range with a headshot, but is balanced by the scarcity of its ammo and an awfully slow reload. Also, I may be crazy but I mostly loved the platforming. It’s awkward, no doubt, but perfectly responsive if you actually engage with its systems (there’s a walk function, people, you don’t have to slide around everywhere!). The slower-paced platform segments break up the combat well and let atmosphere take center stage. Tragically, the tutorial had me excited about that long jump and then you use it maybe twice. Oh well.. Anyways, I think I paid one dollar for this? What a phenomenal game.

When this game was first released in 1998, I must have played it at least 5 times through in the first couple of months. Today, we are so accustomed to FPS games that give total immersion with storyline and world building, but before 1998, none of these things had been refined. Then Half Life came along, and that opening tram ride with no action, just a 5 minute ride through the world, not to mention the inciting incident in the test chamber, absolutely blew up my expectations of what an FPS could deliver. I popped the game open yesterday, and while the technicals of the game are rough around the edges due to it being a nearly 30 year build of a game, the craftsmanship of this game are still absolutely apparent. A total masterpiece
