Some games end when you close them. Others continue to live in your mind even after the credits roll. For me, “Death Stranding” became exactly that kind of experience. When I first started playing, I struggled to understand it. I walked through endless roads, carried heavy loads, and sometimes asked myself, Is this really what the game is about? But as time passed, I slowly began to understand what it was trying to tell me. Death Stranding was never just a game about delivering cargo. It was a story about disconnected people trying to find their way back to each other. Every delivery I made, every road I crossed, and every structure I built started to feel meaningful because I realized I wasn’t just carrying packages; I was helping reconnect a broken world. The thing that affected me the most was the silent connection I created with people I never met. Finding a bridge left behind by another player when I needed it most, discovering a generator exactly when I needed power, or seeing a small sign from someone who had passed through that place before me... I never knew who those people were, and they never knew who I was. But somehow, in the same world, we made each other's journeys a little easier. I think that was the true beauty of Death Stranding. It doesn't constantly make you feel like a great hero. Instead, it shows you how meaningful it can be to simply make another person's journey a little easier. And then there was Sam Porter Bridges... Sam wasn't just a character I controlled. I changed alongside him. At the beginning, he was someone who kept his distance from others and ran away from his past. But throughout his journey, I slowly realized that what he was truly running from wasn't people themselves, but the pain and fear that comes with forming connections. His relationship with Lou was the best example of this. What started as a simple mission slowly became something much more meaningful. Lou was no longer just a BB that Sam had to carry; Lou became the connection that helped Sam open his heart and trust others again. Cliff's story was another part that left a lasting impression on me. Scenes that I didn't fully understand at first gained a completely different meaning by the end. It showed that this journey was never only about saving the world; it was also about understanding the past, accepting loss, and finding a reason to move forward. Death Stranding taught me to slow down. To look around, appreciate quiet moments, and understand that even people we've never met can leave small but meaningful marks on our lives. I've played many games throughout my life. Some entertained me, while others impressed me with their stories. But very few made me want to stop, admire the scenery, listen to the music, and simply stay in that moment. Years from now, I might not remember every single detail. But I don't think I will ever forget the long walks, the roads beneath the rain, the songs playing in the distance, and the kindness left behind by strangers. Because some games are not simply played. You spend a part of your life with them. For me, “Death Stranding” became one of those games. Not just a game. Not just a mission to complete. But a special journey that I will remember for a long time. Thank you, Hideo Kojima. For giving us not just a game, but an experience that reminds us of the importance of staying connected. 🌧️ “Keep on keeping on.”

Best argument for
The most helpful review from a veteran (10+ hours at review)Best argument against
The most helpful review from a veteran (10+ hours at review)Death Stranding is one of the strangest games I’ve ever played, because I genuinely cannot decide whether it is an ambitious masterpiece trapped inside a boring game, or a boring game trapped inside an ambitious masterpiece. There is undeniably something fascinating about it at first. The atmosphere is phenomenal, the music is nothing short of spectacular, and the world feels almost hypnotic during those first hours. Kojima clearly wanted to make something “important,” something larger than the usual AAA formula, and for a while I was completely on board with it. The traversal mechanics especially caught my attention. The idea that the journey itself becomes the adventure instead of merely existing between action sequences is honestly refreshing. Then the game asks you to do it again. And again. And again. And again. Eventually, the illusion starts to collapse. Nearly every mission feels functionally identical: carry object from Point A to Point B with little to no variance. No stealth, infiltration, sabotage, round-up missions, meaning the game is the equivalent of Final Fantasy XV's worst design: fetch quests, but an entire game. New gadgets and mechanics arrive later, but not nearly fast enough to justify how repetitive the experience becomes early on. By the time the game “opens up,” I was mostly wondering whether the destination was worth the hike. Kojima already had this issue in Metal Gear Solid V, another game where brilliant systems were stretched across an experience that somehow felt endless, repetitive, empty and frankly boring at the same time. The real disappointment, though, is the story. The opening hours create a genuinely fantastic premise filled with mystery and tension, but the narrative quickly disappears into an avalanche of nonsense terminology and self-serious exposition. Characters constantly talk about chirality, DOOMS, Beaches, BTs, BBs, extinction entities, and whatever new word Kojima throws at you. The game desperately wants all of this to sound profound, but after enough cutscenes it starts feeling like listening to someone blabbering after smoking weed. The dialogue certainly does not help. Half the cast speaks in exposition dumps, while the other half communicates through awkward puns and lines that sound like they were translated into English by someone who learned human interaction exclusively through Wikipedia articles. Every conversation feels one step away from someone turning directly toward the camera and saying, “Perhaps the real Death Stranding was the strands we stranded along the way.” Absolutely ridiculous. And yet, despite all of this, I cannot completely hate the game. There is something unique here. I can understand why some players connect deeply with its slow, meditative rhythm. Kojima was clearly trying to create something genuine and unconventional instead of another safe blockbuster product assembled in a corporate laboratory. But for me, the experience never evolved enough. I kept waiting for the game to surprise me, to deepen mechanically, narratively, emotionally — to finally deliver the punch its atmosphere kept promising. After around 12 hours, that moment never came. It's hard to recommend this game to someone who likes video games for the sake of interaction. As an adventure game, I still think Journey is a far superior walking simulator, and it's going to be hard to match it. However, if you don't take mechanics too seriously, and are on board of delivering the same quest a million times, then the game might be for you. In the end, I respect Death Stranding for what it is more than I actually enjoy it. And honestly, that may be the most Kojima sentence imaginable. But ultimately, I feel the game is stranded between the beach of a masterpiece, and the beach of a bad game, never fully reaching either of them.

Hideo Kojima made a delivery simulator that mistakes tedium for profundity, and somehow convinced critics that walking in a straight line for six hours while listening to exposition dumps is "visionary." Death Stranding is the most expensive walking simulator ever made, and the walk itself is the only honest thing about it. The gameplay loop is genuinely one of the most boring things a AAA studio has ever shipped: pick up packages, walk to destination, put down packages, repeat. The "challenge" is managing cargo weight and balance, which creates maybe thirty minutes of interesting puzzle-solving stretched across a 50-hour game. BTs (ghost enemies) demand stealth sections that feel tedious rather than tense. The asynchronous multiplayer (structures from other players) is neat conceptually but amounts to "look, someone built a ladder for you" — which is touching until you realize you've seen the same five locations seventeen times and you're still walking. The story is Kojima's maximalist fever dream: celebrities as glorified NPCs (Norman Reedus stares into the camera, Mads Mikkelsen exists menacingly in the background), philosophical rambling about human connection that could've been a TED talk, and a plot that doesn't cohere until hour 40 when it suddenly explains everything you've been confused about, making you realize the confusion was the point. The pacing is glacial — cutscenes outnumber gameplay, characters repeat the same exposition ad nauseam, and the "story" equates to "the world is broken, here's why" followed by "fix the world by delivering packages." The racing minigames are aggressively pointless. Some voice acting is wooden (Norman Reedus sounds like he's reading cue cards). The PC port has limited graphics settings despite demanding a beast of a machine. And the fundamental problem: none of this is fun. It's not even engaging in an intellectual way — it's self-important busywork masquerading as art. Kojima made a bold bet that audiences would confuse "different" with "good," and critics mostly fell for it. The 91% positive reviews are the gaming equivalent of the Emperor's New Clothes — everyone praising the vision while ignoring that the core activity is genuinely tedious. Skip it. If you want meditative gameplay, play Outer Wilds or A Short Hike. If you want ambitious storytelling, play literally any Kojima game from before he became obsessed with celebrity casting and pretentious nonsense.

Death Stranding is a narrative masterpiece by Kojima, yet failing to provide any meaningful gameplay worthy of a being called a "videogame"! Initially I played the game for 5h before quitting due to boredom. The gameplay was non-existant and slow-paced, which made me give it a negative review. The story made me return after a few months to finish the game. I decided to go for 100% and must say that overall my impressions have not changed: the story and narrative is great, but the gameplay is severly lacking: the game is a WALKING/MAILMAN SIMULATOR, no matter how you look at it! Story Kojima has crafted a marvelous world in Death Stranding. The story is the one and only thing that hardcarries this game. You want to push further just to find out what happens to our beloved porter, Sam Porter Bridges. Without any spoilers, the story is rich and features several plottwists. Looking back at it, you had several hints at the beginning, that make a lot more sense after you've finished the game, which makes it perfect for a second playthrough. However, as good as the story and cutscenes are, the main story (roughly 25-30h), is way too dragged out. The game features about 70+ "main missions" split amongst 14 chapters. Most of these sadly do feel like "sidemissions", where you are simply going from point A to B or collecting something for X amount of minutes/hours. The pacing of the story is way off, sometimes you'll have several cutscenes in a short amount of time, while you might go hours after that with no story progression at all. Tutorials in this game are made for 3-year old toddlers. Any time you unlock anything, pick up a mission or have a new mechanic, the game HAS TO EXPLAIN it to you like you never played a videogame before. "SAM SAM SAM SAM SAM" - Die-Hardman every 2 seconds. Yes, your "boss" is called Die-Hardman, and some of your other companions are Fragile, Heartman and Deadman. Kojima really did bring out the cringe fanfic for the names. The prologue & end features about 2-3h each of cutscenes with minimal gameplay. Sadly this makes the "tutorial" drag out for 5-10h, teaching you new mechanics all the time, this simply is unacceptable. You should not have to spend 10h to "learn the game to enjoy it". The ending is great, but horribly presented in-game. If you've finished the game, you know of what 30 minutes I speak of... Not to mention you are forced to sit through THREE SETS OF UNSKIPPABLE CREDITS: for the love of god: all credits should be skippable and you should not have them forced down your throat THREE TIMES! Gameplay / Mechanics Death Stranding features a core gameplay-loop consisting of picking up Orders, aka deliveries, making you travel from point A to point B with additional dangers (environment, enemies etc). Overall you are roleplaying a mailman (Porter). The missions quickly become very repetitive and boring. Not to mention unskippable animations (entering vehicles, accepting & delivering orders, dialogues when you've finished and order). Considering you'll spend at least 25h to finish the story and another minimum of 50h to 100% the game, these minor things become very tedious. The main issue with the gameplay is that simple things, such as walking & traversing terrain, are made hard, frustrating and annoying, meanwhile actual challenges, such as enemies and bossfights, are made very easy and unfailable. The two only enemy factions, BTs (Beached Things) and Mules (enemy looter porters), really pose 0 threat. In the beginning you can easily sneak past them, and later in the game you gain weapons that make them even more trivial. The gameplay mechanics are made overly complicated. There is a stamina bar, which is also turned into a endurance gauge in water/walking up hills, and a consciousness gauge when fighting enemies/getting hit. You'll have to keep track of your health, stamina/endurance/consciousness, equipment condition & energy, footwear condition, vehicle condition & energy. Most of the mechanics seem designed to "waste your time", aka stand in water for 10 seconds to fill your flask to refill stamina, or stand close to this Generator for 10 seconds to recharge your vehicle/equipment energy. This only artificially drags out content and brings nothing positive. Building structures is fun in the beginning and especially when you finish your road & zip-line networks. It's not quite as fun having to maintain them, since the Timefall (rain) deteriorates everything :) Materials are scarce in the beginning and get more common as you level up Knot-cities & Prepper-hideouts. A good idea with poor execution, it just gets annoying in the end, especially since you are "capped" with Chiral Network space, making you unable to build more structures once you have "too many". Controls The controls are very clunky. Movement near cliffs and combat make this very apparant. Trying to even swap a weapon in combat requires operating at least 2 menues and 5 inputs (cause you certainly can't use lethal ammo or you'll cause a nuclear explosion)... Especially frustrating when operating any vehicle, you might as well just stop when you have to turn, because your vehicle certainly won't respond to your inputs. Multiplayer aspects Death Stranding is a singleplayer game, but features semi-multiplayer features. Anything placed in your/others worlds have a chance to cross over in regions you have connected to the "Chiral Network" (befriended & leveled a base there). These structures are not taking up your Chiral Network space, so you get more usable structures, which is great. However you are unable to choose which structures appear in your world. You'll have to manually remove them from the world/map, only for a risk to see them pop up again. Most of the time your world gets clattered up with useless structures, such as off-place bridges or jump-ramps which are blocking vital paths. Especially when you build a zipline network, you'll be able to use other people's ziplines, which is great and enables you to expand it earlier. However you'll notice that areas of the map where you've already "finished" a good network, will still have other's ziplines popping up. This is very frustrating, since you'll have to check that you route to the correct zipline constantly! Even if you manually remove other's ziplines, there's a risk another one will pop up after a while again! You are semi-forced to enable multiplayer progression, since roads are very expensive, and you'll get bonus "help" from other players to finish them in areas you've unlocked. Turning off multiplayer and with it other's structures, will force you to build roads yourself, wasting you enormous amounts of resources and time! Overall recommendations Death Stranding is a "piece of art", most suited to be a movie since it's story & narrative are its main strengths. Why this was made a "game" with ZERO gameplay is beyond me. It's a chill experience, but you don't really ever "play the game". For me personally this will be my first and only "Kojima-experience": I'd love to watch more movies made by Hideo Kojima, but rather not "waste" my time playing his "games". BUY this if... you want a slow-paced meditative chill experience with a focus on the landscapes and vibes. This is basicly a movie-esque / cozy game with focus on storytelling and worldbuilding. DO NOT BUY this if... you want a faster-paced action game with actual gameplay, you will get bored out of your mind.

THIS IS THE SAME REVIEW FROM THE OG Death Stranding. This game is mostly the same, but better! Updated thoughts at the bottom! -------------------------------------------------------------- Lots of people: Walking Simulator. Me: Delivery Sim, Walking/Hiking and Driving, building roads and items to make things easier. Paranormal and terrorist threats in your way. Oh, and don't forget the rain that ages you and cargos in your journey. And there is SOME combat, mostly in the story and stolen cargo deliveries. HAAH. Also, random baby on an expensive beautiful artificial womb machine companion. Adorable. (If I pass by a baby sign cause of other players and hear Norman say, "Someones happy" with the baby laughing ONE MORE TIME, I swear-) The game that got me addicted to 'Don't be so Serious", "BB's Theme" and the famous trailer song back in the days, "Path" from Apocalypse. Optimization, Graphics, Environments/Weather mechanics? (Especially in ultrawide!) Looks so Amazing <3 Ran super smooth on a laptop I had (Razer Blade 14) and current setup? Even better! Soundtrack: TRON/Stranger Things vibes, and some vocal indie types play here and there. (If you know about those Ethereal "otherworldly calm voice" types lmao (2009 times...) Singleplayer? Actually... some Undirected CoOP. Structures, sign emotes, dropped cargo and vehicles left behind by you or others can appear in other people's games. It can be quite hilarious or extremely helpful. especially amazing to see how many people have made it in some hard to reach or secret places. A lot of stuff even have a like system to see how many people have reacted to said items and found your help awesome! If you are worried that stuff that are not useful to you appear, you can get rid of them! or log off. There is even a DS Profile system and privacy info choices. Road and Structures made to keep your items safe, cross hazards and hook line to far reaches, generators to energize your electronic mobility? Can be upgraded by you and others to last longer in the rain. (Yea teamwork!) I was kind of disappointed when I found out this game wasn't going to be like some better Metal Gear, but it turned out to be my most favorite game and the characters and story has inspired me to make more ideas in my head. Thaaaaaanks Kojimaaaa -o-/ ------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE for Director's cut: Same game, but better! If you played the OG, you can import your save data to this version. You will earn all the OG achievements. Pretty awesome. Just wish there was a new game+ though. Also, they added more things that make the baby laugh lmao. Cool thing about that, the baby's happy meter goes up and Sam's overall health recovers every time it happens. Woot. They added more buildable roads routes that go through the mountains, Thank you! Replayable boss fights have a ranked/record option, woah. And! Racecourses lol (Really love that default racing music btw) SAD though, they got rid of the Monster drink collab. oof. STILL no rewatchable cutscenes sadly...

There are very few games that I can honestly say have stayed with me years after finishing them, but Death Stranding is one of those rare experiences. Between my 102 hours in the Director's Cut on Steam and roughly 350 hours on the original PS4 version, it's safe to say I absolutely love this game. Sitting on my desk as I write this review is the Collector's Edition BB Pod staring right back at me, along with my Sam Porter Bridges and Higgs Funko Pops. If that doesn't show how much this game means to me, I don't know what does. Upgrading from the PS4 version to the PC Director's Cut was worth every penny. Not only does the game look even more incredible on PC, but the additional content and quality-of-life improvements make returning to the world feel fresh again. It reminded me why I fell in love with it in the first place. The soundtrack deserves its own section because it's genuinely one of the greatest soundtracks I've ever heard in a video game. Low Roar's music is absolutely beautiful, and every song feels perfectly placed throughout the journey. There are moments where you're simply walking across the vast landscapes, rebuilding the United Cities of America, and one of their songs quietly fades in. Those moments hit differently. The combination of the scenery, the loneliness, and the music creates something that very few games have ever managed to achieve. For me, nothing tops the Death Stranding soundtrack. Graphically, the game is stunning. I did experience a few minor graphics timeouts here and there when I first started playing the PC version, but honestly, they were so infrequent that they never took away from the experience. Once I was back in-game, I was immediately reminded why this world is one of the most beautiful environments ever created. Playing with the DualSense controller instead of the old DualShock 4 has also been a massive upgrade. The adaptive triggers and haptic feedback make carrying cargo, traversing rough terrain, and maintaining your balance feel far more immersive than before. It's one of those improvements that you don't fully appreciate until you've experienced it for yourself. The world itself is breathtaking. It's quiet, empty, and almost peaceful. Most of the time it's just you, BB, and your own thoughts as you trek across mountains, rivers, valleys, and open plains. Then suddenly you'll hear the scanner activate because MULE territory is nearby, instantly replacing that peaceful feeling with uneasiness. The MULEs add this strange, almost unsettling human threat to the world, while the BTs bring a completely different kind of tension. Walking through the rain while desperately trying to hold your breath as your Odradek points toward unseen danger never really stops being nerve-racking, no matter how many hours you've played. The story is another reason this game stands out. It's one of those stories that sticks with you long after the credits roll. There are so many memorable moments, emotional highs, and genuinely surprising reveals that I found myself thinking about it weeks after finishing it for the first time. Sam Porter Bridges is one of my favorite protagonists in gaming because, in some ways, I can relate to him. He's someone who prefers being left alone, handles problems himself, and doesn't naturally seek out connections with other people. Throughout the journey, you slowly watch him open himself up despite his reluctance, learning that even someone who wants to carry everything alone sometimes needs others. I think that's something a lot of people can relate to. Watching his character grow while still maintaining that quiet, reserved personality made him feel incredibly human. The supporting cast is fantastic as well. Every major character has their own motivations, struggles, and emotional moments that gradually piece together the bigger picture. Kojima tells the story in a way that constantly keeps you asking questions until everything eventually clicks together. One thing I always look forward to are the boss battles between chapters. They completely change the pace of the game and keep you on your toes. Just when you've settled into making deliveries and planning efficient routes, you're suddenly thrown into intense encounters that remind you how dangerous this world really is. One of my favorite aspects of Death Stranding, though, is how connected you feel to other players without ever actually meeting them. Coming across a bridge, zipline network, generator, or shelter built by another player at exactly the right moment never gets old. It's such a unique multiplayer system that perfectly fits the game's themes. Likewise, I always enjoy contributing to the world myself by leaving structures and supplies behind for others. I also love the NPC porters wandering the landscape. Whenever I come across them, I usually drop some supplies to help them out, and it's always nice receiving supplies from them in return. They're small interactions, but they make the world feel alive and reinforce the central message of helping one another. Death Stranding isn't a game for everyone, and I completely understand why some people call it a "walking simulator." But for me, that's exactly what makes it special. The journey itself is the gameplay. Every successful delivery feels earned, every mountain climbed feels like an accomplishment, and every connection you make across America carries meaning. Years later, it's still one of my favorite games ever made. It's beautiful, emotional, relaxing, tense, thought-provoking, and unlike anything else in gaming. Whether it's the unforgettable soundtrack, the incredible world, the unique gameplay, or the unforgettable characters, Death Stranding continues to be an experience that I recommend to anyone willing to give it the patience it deserves. Keep on keeping on.

Perhaps a strong contender for the most pretentious and self aggrandising video game ever made. Kojima has always been a middling writer but with sparks of genuine creativity, sadly he appears to have grown worse with age. Though his departure from Konami was likely on them, it's abundantly clear that going independent and no longer having others around to reign him in and make alterations is how you end up with, well, you end up with Death Stranding. You'd think that someone who writes this much would have mastered the art of subtlety but every single allegory and metaphor in this game is as delicate as a brick to the temple, and worse still offers the most basic, shallow commentary. Wow Kojima, you designed the technology that connects us and acts like a phone to look like handcuffs. You're so deep dude! This is the tier of commentary that annoying girl you went to high school with would post on Facebook over a decade ago, that you'd roll your eyes at upon seeing it. He fails to master the simplest of rules, "show don't tell" in fact, he takes the exact opposite approach, to an absolutely laborious degree. I really cannot emphasise how much this game does not respect your time, aside from the dreadfully slow gameplay, you are regularly bombarded with utterly nonsensical exposition dumps that even the cast don't understand, and my God, the endless cutscenes. There are over 6 hours of cutscenes in this game, 6 hours. To put that into perspective that's around the same runtime as the theatrical releases of both The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers combined. Unlike those films however, what awaits you in Death Stranding is awkward disjointed acting, unnatural dialogue, and random celebrity appearances. If these weren't made before AI you'd swear that's what had created them. You could remove around 90 percent of the cutscenes and flavour text in this game, and the story would make exactly as much sense, it would also probably be a considerably better experience. I haven't spoken much of the gameplay because honestly there's not much to tell, it serves it's purpose, it gets stale rather quickly, but it's mechanically sound. Honestly it's abundantly clear that Kojima is utterly obsessed with Hollywood and desperately wants to be a filmmaker, but just isn't actually cut out to be making movies, and I don't think he actually cares for video games all that much, or at the very least, fails to understand what makes them such a compelling medium. Kojima made a couple of influential games decades ago and has now fallen for his own hype and celebrity, inserting himself into his games, all the while his fans, fallen for this cult of personality, lap it up. If this game had been made by anyone else, it would have faded into obscurity. Though I suppose it's too much to expect Kojima to make a good video game, when he's far too busy trying to cosy up to Hollywood and using the Death Stranding brand to sell overpriced merch and clothing. This is not groundbreaking art, this is pretentious and poorly written self indulgence. Do not kid yourself otherwise.

I got this on sale at 15.99 during 2025 Winter Sale. Let me just say the first couple hours is pretty slow due to setting up the story and what not which can through people off. The game is a lot more than just "being a delivery man". It also has the stealthiness you come to expect from a Kojima game and yes you do get weapons in the game, the first 2-3 hours can make you think you'll never get one but trust me you finally get one in time, once the game picks up in just went into a ruins that had a quite a bit of enemies inside while doing a Main Mission. Setting up little spots where you can charge your gear, build bridges, use ladders scale mountains, having your own Motorcycle so you can carry all your loot you found with relative ease. I'm still playing but so far it's worth every penny, heck it's worth the 40 they would charge if not for the sale. That's just my opinion.

One of the most tedious games I’ve ever played—a "gourmet" walking simulator with top-tier production values but incredibly boring gameplay. It’s baffling that they built a game around the most tedious mechanics imaginable: walking and stealth. On top of that, there’s the weight management system—managing the load you carry—which feels like something out of a mobile game. It’s understandable why the media fawned over this game; they focused only on the aspects that don't matter: expensive actors, "big" names, and a story that tries too hard to be profound. I’ve had more fun watching the grass grow in my yard.
