Why Do We Still Reach for the Fire When It Is Dying? I did not truly understand Dark Souls when I defeated a difficult boss. That understanding arrived slowly, like cold rain sinking into old stone. At first it only felt lonely. Later I realized the loneliness had already settled somewhere much deeper. I completed Dark Souls in October 2025, and Dark Souls II a month later. Two months is not long in ordinary life, yet in the world of Souls it felt enough to watch entire kingdoms fade away. When I first entered Lordran, I believed in the fire almost instinctively. Fire meant roads, cities, memory. It meant human beings could still recognize one another in the dark. Lordran was already ruined, yet there was still dignity inside its ruin. Anor Londo stood beneath its golden illusion like the memory of a civilization that refused to admit it had already died. And Gwyn— The first time I faced him, I expected majesty. Instead I found an exhausted old king beneath mournful piano notes. He no longer felt divine. He felt tired. Like the final person remaining after the end of a long age. That was why I linked the fire in Dark Souls. Not because I trusted the gods, but because the flame still seemed capable of giving meaning to suffering. A bonfire was never merely a checkpoint. It felt human. Temporary. Fragile. Like light seen through snow from the window of a distant house. Then came Dark Souls II. Drangleic did not feel like myth. It felt like erosion. Kingdoms rose and vanished so many times that history itself seemed worn thin. What stayed with me most was not despair, but exhaustion. People no longer asked whether the fire should continue. They asked how many times the same tragedy had already repeated. Lucatiel haunted me more than any king. Her tragedy was painfully small. She did not die gloriously. She forgot herself piece by piece. Her name, her face, the reason she fought—all of it slowly disappeared beneath the curse. That was the first time I began to suspect the fire might not only preserve civilization. Perhaps it also preserved suffering. Even then, I could not fully reject it. Perhaps because I remembered the warmth of bonfires. Perhaps because I had seen Gwyn. Then I entered Dark Souls III. The Cemetery of Ash did not feel like a beginning. It felt like arriving too late. Grey sky, half-open coffins, wind moving through gravestones. The player was no longer the Chosen Undead. The player was ash: something left behind after the burning had already failed. That single idea changes the entire mood of the game. Lothric does not resemble a kingdom waiting to be saved. It resembles the last dust of many dead ages piled together. Dragon corpses hang above the High Wall. Pilgrims crawl toward the castle with bent backs. Knights continue their patrols through empty halls long after the world they protected has vanished. The game quietly tells you: the fire has burned too long. And nowhere is that sadness sharper than in the moments when the past returns. Not triumphantly. Not beautifully. As ruins. The Smouldering Lake is filled with the remains of Izalith. Quelana. The Fair Lady. Names once hidden deep beneath Dark Souls now survive only through corpses and abandoned relics. No cutscene explains their fate. You simply walk into the ruins and understand, all at once, that certain stories ended long before you arrived. That is why it hurts. The Fair Lady was never heroic in the usual sense. She was blind, ill, gentle. She endured pain quietly while others worshipped her without understanding her suffering. In Dark Souls III, she and Quelana seem finally reunited, but only after death. No farewell. No reunion. Only silence. That silence is the soul of Dark Souls III. When I returned to Anor Londo, I stopped moving for a long time. The city was still beautiful beneath Irithyll’s moonlight, but the warmth had disappeared from it. The great stairways remained. The silver knights remained. Yet it felt less like returning home than walking through the preserved body of something ancient. And then there was the Giant Blacksmith. No grand speech. No dramatic ending. Only a corpse where the sound of hammering once echoed through empty halls. That moment hurt more than many boss fights. Perhaps because bosses are meant to die. The blacksmith was not. He belonged to the ordinary rhythm of the journey. You visited him, repaired your weapon, listened to the steady sound of metal striking metal, and left again. In a world full of lies and fading gods, he felt strangely dependable. Returning years later and finding only silence there felt almost unbearable. That is what Dark Souls III understands better than most games: nostalgia is not the return of the past. It is realizing the past continued disappearing without you. The Soul of Cinder carries the same sorrow. It is not a person, but the remains of everyone who once linked the fire. And when Gwyn’s melody returns during the second phase, the entire trilogy suddenly feels impossibly distant. Gwyn is gone. Lordran is gone. The fire itself is fading. Yet something still refuses to let go. After I defeated the Soul of Cinder, I sat in silence for a very long time. The room was dark except for the monitor. The flame still flickered weakly on the screen. I did not feel triumph. I felt as though I had closed the final page of an old book and realized the people inside it were truly gone. That is why the endings matter so much. Linking the fire no longer feels glorious. The flame crawls weakly across the Ashen One’s body like the last light of a dying lamp. The ending of fire is quieter, almost merciful, yet letting the flame die carries its own grief. Even the usurpation ending cannot escape sadness. Every choice feels stained by time. And then there is Gael. At the end of the world, after kingdoms, gods, and histories have all collapsed into ash, one old knight still wanders onward searching for pigment for a painted world. Not glory. Not salvation. Only color for something that does not yet exist. There is something unbearably gentle in that. Looking back now, the trilogy feels less like three games than three stages of farewell. In Dark Souls, I believed in the fire. In Dark Souls II, I began to doubt it. In Dark Souls III, I stood before its dying light and realized doubt had not erased tenderness. For the bonfires. For ruined kingdoms. For Lucatiel slowly forgetting her own name. For the Giant Blacksmith’s hammer falling silent. For the Fair Lady waiting alone beneath the earth. For every small light that tried to survive in a world growing steadily darker. When the fire is about to fade, why do we still reach for it? Perhaps because even after everything else is gone, the hand still remembers warmth.

Dark Souls III feels like the story of a knight who kept their vow until the world ended. Everything here is tired. Kingdoms have collapsed into ash. Gods have withered into memory. Great warriors have forgotten what they were fighting for. Old duties continue long after the people who gave them meaning are gone. And somehow, you keep walking. That is what I love most about this game. You die, you return, you learn, and eventually you overcome something that once seemed impossible. The Ashen One barely needs to speak. Persistence becomes its own language. There is something deeply sad about a world where everyone is trying to preserve things that have already ended. Old kingdoms. Old promises. Old fires. Dark Souls III understands that sometimes holding on for too long can become its own kind of ruin. By the end, there are no cheering crowds waiting for you. No great kingdom left to save. Just ash, a dying light, and a handful of exhausted souls who somehow made it all the way to the end. And strangely, I found that comforting. Not everything needs to last forever to have been worth loving. Sometimes you carry the flame as far as you can. And then you let it go.

"Dark Souls 3: From Ashes to Memories" As someone whose favorite game of all time is Elden Ring, I always wondered what it would be like to go back and experience one of the games that inspired it. Among all of FromSoftware's titles, Dark Souls 3 was the one that people praised the most. Also, the combat and mechanics are very similar to those of Elden Ring, so it was the perfect destination for me. I just wanted to experience a good challenge and memorable boss fights, and it turned out that it exceeded my expectations. *World and Level Design* The world of Dark Souls 3 feels like a kingdom on its final breath. Everywhere you go, there are ruins of civilizations that have long fallen, swamps, and abandoned castles. Unlike many fantasy games that make you feel like a hero saving the world, this game reminds you that you arrived far too late. The age of greatness is over, and all that remains are its ashes. As you progress through the game, the sun starts to fade and looks like an eclipse, signifying that the whole world is being consumed by darkness. The lore behind the world is so fascinating, just like Elden Ring. The deeper you research it, the more interesting it gets. This game is not open world; however, some areas may feel huge while exploring, leading to new paths (including hidden ones that you cannot find without using a guide lol). Now comes the level design, which is the strongest aspect of this game (in my opinion). The diversity of enemies in this game while moving from one area to another is crazy. It's even better than Elden Ring, which is why many enemies in Elden Ring seem inspired by this game. Also, even though this game follows a linear progression, exploration is one of its biggest positives. You can find shortcuts, exciting rewards, and much more while exploring different areas. *Bosses* One of my main reasons for playing this game was the challenge. Now, to be honest, the bosses in this game felt easy most of the time, except Dancer of the Boreal Valley . That boss took 17–18 tries and almost made me rage quit the game. I beat most other bosses in a maximum of 3–4 attempts. But even after this, I consider this game to be much harder than Elden Ring because I died ALOTT of times while exploring and searching areas for items and loot. The start was pretty rough for me. Iudex Gundyr was a decent beginner fight (1st try), Vordt of the Boreal Valley (1st try), then this gimmicky optional boss came along (1st try). Up until Crystal Sage and Deacons of the Deep, I kept asking myself why I was fighting these gimmick boss fights. There was no fun until I came to Abyss Watchers. That fight changed everything. As someone who plays Souls games for the bosses, that fight gave me hope for the rest of the game. After that, all the bosses became EPIC. The music, movesets, and lore behind the bosses are as good as Elden Ring's (including the optional ones, because Nameless King is my favorite boss). I will also play the DLC someday after achieving 100% completion (grindy af though). *Music and Voice Acting* The music in this game is GOATED. Out of all the games I have played, this game's music is my favorite (after Clair Obscur, ofc). The main menu theme still gives me goosebumps even after playing the game so much. Then there are the boss fight OSTs—Abyss Watchers, Twin Princes, Dancer of the Boreal Valley, and Soul of Cinder are some of my favorites. Firelink Shrine's music lives in my mind rent-free these days. The voice acting is also very good. Even side characters like Siegward, Anri, and Yoel leave a strong impression. The way these optional characters express their emotions through dialogue makes me want to learn more about their lore. NEGATIVES/CONS Honestly, I don't find anything bad about this game except the pricing, which feels very off considering the game is now nearly a decade old and the base price is still around $45–50 (depending on the region). The maximum discount this game gets is only 50%, even after all this time. Either FromSoftware should reduce the base price or offer bigger discounts. This game is very good, and I highly recommend playing at least one game in the Dark Souls series—you will not be disappointed. Also, just like Elden Ring, this game supports co-op, so if you are facing trouble during a boss fight, you can summon random people to help you. BUT unlike Elden Ring, you will not find many summon signs most of the time. Also, if you are playing online, you might get invaded by someone (THOSE WHO HAVE NO LIFE) who can be annoying af, so be ready to deal with them. Who should buy this game? If you have already played many Souls games and have experience with these types of challenging games, then welcome—you will get a memorable experience along with a good challenge. If you haven't played any Souls games and are still considering whether to buy this or not, then you have to ask yourself: Do I like hard and challenging games? Am I committed enough to complete this game without quitting halfway through? Do I prefer story or gameplay? This game has a story, but just like Elden Ring, it's not easy to understand by simply playing the game. So if you are primarily looking for a story-driven experience, you might feel disappointed. At the end of the day, you have to step out of your comfort zone to play these games. They can be tough and challenging, but overcoming them gives you satisfaction and motivation to try things outside the box. My experience with this game was amazing. The music, lore, atmosphere, and combat—everything was exactly what I wanted from an "Elden Ring-like game." The bosses weren't great at the start, but by the end, everything changed. Just have some patience and persistence, and you will make it eventually. As our Fire Keeper always says— "MAY THE FLAMES GUIDE THEE" ;D

This is the best game I have ever played in my entire life. After I watched LOTS of lore videos, I started to appreciate this game even more. The lore is so deep in this trilogy it is INSANE. Every game is connected to eachother in so many ways. It is mindblowing. When you will play it, you will understand what I mean. Enough of the lore let's talk about the best part in this game bosses. Peak Souls 3 has the best bosses of any video game. Most of my favorite bosses I have encountered in my life are from this game as well as the best one (Slave Knight Gale). I will not spoil the fun for you. Just know It is PEAK. I will admit there are a ton of gimic bosses however, there also incredible and unique ones. The music, design, attacks, animations, etc.everything about these bosses is just amazing. The music from the final boss haunts me to this day because of how incredible it is. Music in this game is phenomenal and for sure some of the pieces will be remembered for a long time. Many people hate this game for how linear it is and I don't really understand why. In my opinion it is better than a kind of open world in ds1. In ds3 you cannot really get lost. If you do that is a skill issue. Even though it is a straight line it still works perfectly and the exploration feels great and rewarding. Also the level design is incredible. Of course, there are some bad areas but they are more than made up for the beatiful ones such as Irithyll of The Boreal Valley. Everytime I play through this game I melt when I see that view. A friend recommended this game to me when I was pretty new to pc gaming. I cannot express how grateful I am for that. This game alone changed how I look at games now and how I play them. Because of this game alone I played every other Fromsoftware title. I cannot express and no one can how incredible this game is. This is a must play for any gamer. 100000/10 (P.S. I want to recommend a guy on yt that played through dark souls games blind and how amazed he was by all of them. His channel is Bind)

ive beaten this game at every stage of my life at this point, when it launched, then two years later, then again, and again, its one of few games i return to on a cycle without even really deciding to, i just find myself reinstalling it, and every time its different, not because the game changed but because i did, the first playthrough i was dying to everything, watching boss videos, a couple years later i was clearing the same bosses first or second try and noticing things in the level design i completely missed before, now i run through it like im visiting somewhere familiar, i know every shortcut, every enemy, every item, and i still enjoy every second of it, that's the thing about dark souls 3 that's hard to explain to someone who hasn't played it, the game has layers that dont reveal themselves until you have put serious time in, the world design, the way the lore is buried in item descriptions, the way certain boss fights reframe earlier areas, it rewards you for paying attention across multiple playthroughs not just one. if you've never played it, play it, if you played it years ago and didn't finish it, go back, if you are like me and just finished another playthrough..... yeah, see you again in two years.

I hate this game JK, I just perfected the game It's a classic I mean it doesn't even matter what I'm gonna say However, a very great game, won't recommend it for casual players though Edit: Actually, I think I made a mistake So lemme fix it by talking more about the game I'm not much of a story guy, when I load up a game I just play like if I wanted a story in the first place I would've read a book or watched a show But as I was playing the game trying to get all the emotes and doing random stuff to npcs along the way, it really hit me how sad actually is the story of the game Dark Souls is much more than a challenging game, It's beauty, the kind of bitter beauty that exists in our very own lives The countless times you have to challenge a boss...the very idea of hollowing when you die, and just leave the game, the game doesn't tell you what happens in the world next Your character simply loses purpose, it becomes a "hollow" Isn't that similar to life?, if you won't try, then your story won't progress, making you a kind off a hollow yourself My whole life I spent thinking and joking about ds games are the furthest thing from good story telling Only now I know, only now I see, DS's story wasn't meant to be read standardly, it was meant to be felt. And now I feel it myself Sure, it's not perfect, not at all, but the game was built with vision, and that vision is very true It was a very fun journey, thank you for reading till this point

My friend and I had gotten into Dark Souls around the same time, difference being I was playing the entire trilogy in order while he was just going to play this one, the third installment. By the time I finished the first two games, he wasn't even halfway done with this game and ultimately just stopped playing. I sneered to myself, "Of course he's just going to stop playing this game halfway through, just like most games he plays." I opened Dark Souls III for the first time, eager to zip past him in progress. Then I was enlightened. This ♥♥♥♥ is ARSE. A full decade of me constantly being shoved in a virtual vat of "Dark Souls is the good one, Dark Souls II is the ♥♥♥♥ one, but Dark Souls III is the best one." for this. This game has taught me a valuable lesson to never have your expectations raised, so you can never be disappointed. People really love their boss rushes huh. A straight line vs. a spider web is what I would compare DS3 to the previous two. In DS3 you get a short-lived, 20-30 hour adventure (maybe it's for the best) where you literally just go straight. What made Dark Souls, Dark Souls was not the bossfights, but the "beautifully ugly" maze of a world that we were placed in the center of, our objective to trailblaze and figure out our way to outline the entirety of that maze. The magic of immersing in these "beautifully ugly" areas and discovering how interconnected the world was to each other is in my opinion the core value of Dark Souls. I used the descriptor "beautifully ugly" a few times to talk about DS1 and 2, but I think most areas in DS3 are just ugly. They're uninspiring, with nothing in between the bonfire and the boss of the area. Little to no reward for straying away from the main path (if there even is an option to) in a water-down, plain boring world. At least the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ areas in the previous games were iconic because they were REALLY good at being ♥♥♥♥♥♥, but this game pissed me off the most because everytime I died, I was reminded everytime I had to trudge through this bland ass area with nothing to look forward to in between. I just wanted out. I just wanted to escape the slog and just get it over with. There are a few exceptions, with Irithyll of the Boreal Valley being my personal standout, but even then, it's still at most a B-tier out of S for me. If you combined the quality and enjoyment of all the areas in DS3, it still wouldn't even touch the masterpiece that is Brume Tower from DS2. A couple of the areas are just one-dimensional versions of areas from DS1. I had hope when I first encountered these parts, but. shoulda known. The bosses are good. Great even. Still not worth trading everything else Dark Souls was supposed to offer for them though. Especially since they still can't dream of touching Elden Ring, Sekiro, and maybe Lies of P (currently playing) bosses. I'm convinced people are just okay with the glaringly short playtime cause they get to fight more bosses. Bosses, bosses, bosses, it's like somehow everyone who hadn't experienced Dark Souls saw memes about dying to bosses online and just all collectively started on Dark Souls III, expected nothing but cool bosses and having never had their standards set for the more important aspects since they haven't experienced the wonderful world the previous two had to offer. The bosses in DS1 and 2 were actually quite terrible, with little standouts. But that didn't matter. It was completely reversed. I was looking forward to mapping my way through the world and dreading the abominations of bosses. It didn't matter since I value worldbuilding and how the game makes me feel through environmental storytelling much more than a bossfight I can get over with in just a few. It just makes the standouts in the game stand out even more, which might be worth it for me. The main consensus is that the graphics are more polished and I wouldn't disagree. But I much prefer the more muddied textures of the first two. It makes it feel much more dark fantasy to me which somehow made me more immersed in the world. I know this is a weird complaint, but the textures in DS3 look like TOO polished to the point where it kind of looks worse. Almost glossy. I'm an avid screenshot taker and I have 100 more screenshots on DS1 than DS3, even when the ladder has a lot more cinematic moments. A chore. I felt the same playing this like I feel doing calculus homework.
