I genuinely believe that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is one of the greatest video games ever created. Not one of the best RPGs. Not one of the best games of this generation. One of the greatest games ever made. Every once in a great while, a game comes along that reminds you that video games are not merely entertainment — they are art. This is one of those games. Expedition 33 is a masterpiece in every sense of the word: breathtaking visuals, unforgettable characters, sublime music, emotional storytelling, and gameplay that somehow manages to feel both fresh and timeless. The combat system is nothing short of perfection. It takes the strategic depth of classic turn-based RPGs and injects it with energy, skill, and excitement until every encounter feels meaningful and exhilarating. Every mechanic sings in harmony with every other mechanic. The art direction is so stunning that many scenes belong in museums. Every environment looks like a painting come to life. The soundtrack doesn't merely accompany the journey — it elevates it into something transcendent. And the story... the story stayed with me long after I put the controller down. Games like this are why many of us fell in love with this medium in the first place. Calling Expedition 33 a video game almost feels inadequate. It is a monumental artistic achievement. A huge piece of art. A triumph of creativity and passion. If video games have a Mona Lisa, this belongs in the same gallery. No bugs. No filler. No wasted moments. No compromises. Just perfection. Years from now people will look back at Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as one of those rare landmark titles that defined an era and demonstrated exactly what this medium is capable of becoming. A masterpiece. 10/10 doesn't do it justice.

Best argument for
The most helpful review from a veteran (10+ hours at review)Best argument against
The most helpful review from a veteran (10+ hours at review)So many people I know told me this game brought them joy, so I really did want to like this and share that with them. But I just don't. I tried my best to temper my expectations for this game after it swept TGA last year. I was sure it would be at least good, regardless of how overhyped it may or may not be. I was determined to give it a fair shot. And yet, I simply could not bring myself to enjoy Expedition 33. It's not an awful game by any means and there are plenty of positives. Narratively it's mostly fine, it's a story about grief, how it blinds us, the trials and tribulations it brings and the lengths people go to avoid confronting reality, that sort of thing. The actual execution of it is nothing I would sing praises to the heavens for but I think it's okay, the idea is good, even with the clumsy pacing and sometimes strangely written dialogue. The music is also great, I found myself humming the main Lumière motif while doing chores. The voice actors also did a great job, Jennifer English in particular is standout and Andy Serkis is great as usual. If this had been a film or series it'd be pretty good. But for me that's about as far as the positives go. For the rest of it, I really, really do not see what people find so compelling about it. I think Team Cherry (Hollow Knight devs) summed it up best when they described it as "broadly palatable." My biggest grievance by far is with combat. Dodging was fine, although the parry timing felt really strange to get used to even with the clear audio cues. But the window/timing of them wasn't my issue with it. I think dodges and parries can work in a turn-based system, but in this game I simply do not think it works at all. For me, the critical issues are: For a turn-based system, it relies so heavily on its parry mechanic that it becomes absurd. I really don't care if the counterattack animation is full of aura farming and bass boosted sound effects. In turn based systems, the rewarding feeling comes from putting together a team of character builds and carrying out your strategy successfully. In Expedition 33, that rewarding feeling for your stat choices, skill combinations, speed tuning, etc, all goes out the window because the reward so heavily hinges on long chains of parrying. Dodges also seem to exist mostly just to feel out an enemy's attack pattern, after which you are absolutely expected to parry everything. Your builds and strategies mean nothing if you do not master the parry system. There's even Verso's entire gameplay loop actively punishing you for missing a dodge or parry by lowering his rank and therefore his damage. Adding a real-time mechanic to a turn-based system, and then only rewarding players for mastering the former, is an atrocious design choice. Dodges and parries do not deliver anything close to the same sense of satisfaction and skill improvement as they do in a real-time ARPG (i.e. the genre they come from) because there's no movement. I don't have the same options of, say, dodging in a specific direction to position myself for a better attack window, or creating some distance so I have space to heal, or blocking an attack with a shield if I don't want to reposition with a dodge, or anything in that vein of thinking. It is entirely a matter of pressing RB with the correct timing several times in a row, ad infinitum. It isn't fun. Having it as a limited option as part of a wider toolset would be one thing, and I'd be interested to see a different turn-based game try to pull that off, but in this game it's seemingly the very foundation of combat itself. Given it has a rather good soundtrack, combat might as well have just been a rhythm game instead. I don't want to call it "parryslop" but it's becoming more and more difficult to resist doing so. In addition to the QTE-like nature of parries, there are also literal QTEs whenever you take a turn. You press the A button a couple of times when prompted. It's always the A button. It's not fun or satisfying and adds nothing to the experience. There's even an option in the settings to just automatically have these QTEs succeed... why even bother having these? Another big point of praise this game receives is its visuals and graphics. I can see what they were going for narratively with a painted world, but so much of it was just utterly mediocre in every sense of the word. Visual flair comes entirely from Unreal Engine's raytracing and bloom filter. I don't have a raytracing GPU so the whole "wow cool graphics" song and dance was lost on me and the game looked like ♥♥♥♥, and I'm not exactly in a rush to upgrade with the currently ♥♥♥♥♥♥ market for components thanks to the AI bubble. Speaking of which, I really struggled to think of any other explanation for its world and level design than the devs saying "ChatGPT generate concept art for a beautiful painted world" and going from there. Places where the ground was covered in snow yet random patches of nothing were on fire, train tracks clipping through a brick wall as if the model was placed there on a whim and the dev said "job done," and many more such instances. The art direction consists mostly of oversaturated colours vomited all over the place. (I know why it's like that, I just think it's poorly done.) The level design seems to consist of random asset store items floating in midair with an equally random grappling hook mechanic connecting them. The parry sound effect sounds like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ vine boom. So much of this game is painfully mediocre. Things like animation quality or enemy balancing can easily be dismissed as this being the studio's debut project, but most things cannot. Far from unique to this game but it's also horribly optimised. I was averaging 40-50 fps at 1080p for most of the game while on the lowest possible graphics settings (including XeSS Ultra Performance with resolution scale 33.3%). I know Sandfall is a new indie studio and this is their debut project, but if I can play certain recent AAA games on low-medium settings at a stable 60fps at 1080p without any upscaling, then I really don't think this is reasonable. (That said, it may not be Sandfall's fault, Unreal Engine is a plague.) Also, although the story is mostly fine, I think the forced moral choice at the end was really stupid. The game is very clearly opinionated on the moral choice in question (which is good! writers should be opinionated!) but then presents you with a choice to say "thats crazy bro" and contradict the entire point of the story in the first place, and changes the philosophy of discussion around it from grief and escapism and confronting reality, which is interesting, into are the painted people real humans, which is the sort of boring nonsense you'd see in 2hr slop video essays on game lore. Really strange writing decision. Why go to such lengths to set up the moral dilemma only to ruin it? There's a lot that can be said about this game. I certainly don't think it's bad. It's an impressive debut project for a studio of Sandfall's size, while also being a monumentally overrated game. Both can be true at the same time. I personally think it is mediocre and do not recommend it. Plenty of friends and acquaintances loved it, so I was disappointed not to share that with them. Even so, this is absolutely not the masterpiece it is lauded as.

See things as they are, not how you want them to be... The most beautiful game I have ever played, in every aspect! I think by now everyone has played or at least heard about Clair Obscure: Expedition 33, but I'm not going to spoil anything about the game in this review. The story is about a group of people living in an isolated town called Lumiere, inspired by France during the Belle Époque. A huge number can be seen on the monolith that the Paintress paints every year, which affects them, so they form a team of expeditioners to sail to her in hopes of killing her and stopping her from harming the people in Lumiere. This year, Expedition 33 is gathering to start the adventure. Will they be able to stop her and live life normally? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3735188216 The gameplay is like that of old RPGs, where you explore a world map, travel from city to city, meet people, kill monsters, and upgrade your weapons. The fighting is turn-based, which I'm familiar with. Think of old Final Fantasy games when you play this game. It is clear it was inspired by those old games, and the atmosphere is similar to NieR, which is one of my favorite games. However, there is no manual save; the game autosaves regularly. Whenever you find a flag checkpoint, it will save automatically and let you fast-travel to another checkpoint. Make sure to touch the checkpoint flag whenever you want to save. The combat is turn-based with QTEs, which you can set to auto in the settings if that's not your thing. Each character has a different fighting style and set of skills. The only things I had to do repeatedly were parrying attacks and dodging. I found out that by learning and hearing the attack, it would be easy to parry it. It frustrated me a couple of times, especially with some bosses you can't kill unless you parry them, but you can always fail and learn how to do it next time. The game needs some grinding to kill some bosses. Try not to skip any monsters you see around; kill them to level up and earn new weapons. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3735506708 The artwork is outstanding, and every detail in the game is beautiful and meaningful. The color palette chosen for each area is mesmerizing, and the character's design is memorable. This game did something other games in my opinion failed to do. There is no UI and clutter while you are exploring the areas; you just walk around and enjoy each detail without having a health bar, a minimap, or a distracting list of objectives. You have the full screen to yourself and your character, which is a huge plus for me, as it lets me enjoy the environment. The characters' animations and facial expressions are on point; you can see the emotions in their gazes, posture, and voices. The voice actors did an outstanding job capturing the essence of those characters. It felt like watching a movie; in each scene, you could see how they reacted, what they looked like, and how they received each piece of information. This alone makes you want to replay the game to watch those little details. The dialogues are extremely well written. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3735805052 Music is breathtakingly beautiful; each soundtrack is meaningful; the lyrics tell a story and capture the characters' emotions. The game has 154 tracks on the main album alone, worth listening to, and they will actually stick in your head after playing the game. Character development is one of the strong suits of this game; you can see and feel how they bond, how they become stronger, how they hate, and how they grow suspicious. The writing of each character is phenomenal, especially in Act 2. Pros: +Emotional beautiful story. +Outstanding soundtracks. +Beautiful graphics and animations. +Great characters and monsters design. +Phenomenal voice over. +Turn-based combat. +World map. +Fast traveling. +Journal. +Multiple endings. +Collectables. +Cosmatics for each character. +Auto save. +Steam achievements. Cons: - No manual save. The game is unique in that it doesn't explain the story to you directly; it wants you to follow it emotionally and logically, forming theories about what is going on before the grand reveal. I highly recommend not charging and just killing bosses without exploring the world, reading the journals, or speaking to the characters. Those interactions will give you different layers to the story, and you'll understand it more, especially in the last act, where you'll be able to explore the whole map to read more information and learn more about the characters.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 | Perfect Game Review (100% Completion at 62.1 Hours) With Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 absolutely cleaning up at the Game Awards and invading my social media feed, I figured I’d finally see what all the fuss was about. Fast-forward to the credits, and I’d spent the entire game whispering “this is absolute cinema” at my screen like I was personally responsible for the standing ovation. Gameplay: As a fan of both genres, combining souls-like mechanics with turn-based combat was a real treat. The huge range of builds and smaller playable cast let me experiment without feeling overwhelmed. But if we’re being honest, about 95% of my squad decisions were just Maelle and Lune taking turns carrying the team. ★★★★★ Graphics: The character designs are fantastic, the cinematics are peak, and every area across the continent is ridiculously detailed. I genuinely didn’t mind getting lost without a map because there was always something gorgeous to stumble across. Even that creepy face-mask island looked incredible... although I’d happily get lost somewhere else next time. ★★★★★ Sound: I have far too many tracks permanently stuck in my head to give this anything less than a perfect score. Even the water level theme was an absolute banger. Now, I may not understand French, but that hasn’t stopped me from sneaking songs into my playlists and telling my family it’s just French pop music. ★★★★★ Story: I knew this was going to be top tier when I got emotionally attached to the characters within the first 30 minutes. Packed with twists, humour, heart, and plenty of emotional damage, the story keeps you invested from start to finish. The characters are bursting with personality, while the cinematics and storytelling are on another level. There were moments I wasn’t even sure if I was playing a game or watching a really good movie. ★★★★★ Replayability: With multiple builds, challenging encounters, collectibles, and a substantial post-game, there are plenty of reasons to return. And once you’ve finished everything, there’s also New Game+ for those who apparently haven’t suffered enough yet. ★★★★☆ Final Thoughts: Expedition 33 combines stunning visuals, phenomenal music, satisfying combat, and an unforgettable story into one hell of an RPG. It takes familiar ideas and somehow makes them feel fresh. It is also one of the few games I’d genuinely pay to have my memory wiped just so I could experience it all over again. ★★★★★ Overall Rating: 10/10, the Game Awards had me curious, the 9,999 emotional damage had me convinced.

So many people I know told me this game brought them joy, so I really did want to like this and share that with them.

I bought this game to cope with the fact that I will lose a parent within the next couple of months. I needed a way to escape from reality momentarily, so nothing better than choosing a game with death, loss and grief as it's central themes, right? In the end, I have become addicted to it. The story has been touching right from the start and I can easily say that it has one of the most outstanding intros to a game that I have got to experience in recent years. You get to care and almost cry for characters that you have only known for 30 minutes. The use of narrative elements is quite beautiful too and it often feels like watching a movie. Over the course of the story, you will get to know how other people in this world deal with grief; some manage to move on, others will be stuck in it forever. You won't be able to understand it until you have gone through it yourself and that aspect heavily influences your perception of the story. The combat is extremely fun, yet challenging. Mastering timings and enemy patterns feels extremely rewarding and there's also a decent amount of end-game content to spend time with. The visuals are absolutely stunning and the music made me start playing my piano again after neglecting it for a while due to burnout. Without a doubt one of the best gaming OSTs out there. If there's one thing I disliked, it is the option to have some romantic dialogue with two of your companions. That felt very out of place considering the setting and several other factors. It is completely optional though and doesn't affect the story. Genuinely one of the few games I have played that made me realize how beautiful life can be sometimes, even in times of hardship, if it means that I get to experience this work of art. It shows how much a small team can accomplish, as long as they show love and appreciation for their craft.
