I struggled to get into Borderlands 4 at first. I put somewhere around 10–20 hours into it, found myself getting bored, and eventually set it down for about 10 months. I recently decided to give it another shot, and this time it finally clicked. More importantly, I figured out why I struggled with it so much the first time. I’ve been playing Borderlands since day one and have played through every game in the series. Over the years, I developed a pretty specific way of playing them: enter an area, pick up every quest, challenge, and task available, complete everything, and then move on. That approach absolutely killed Borderlands 4 for me. This is the first truly open-world Borderlands, so there aren’t the same clearly segregated zones with a manageable list of things to knock out before moving on. There is a ton of stuff scattered around the world, and trying to complete everything as I encountered it turned the game into a repetitive grind. I was spending hours doing side activities while barely advancing the story, and eventually I just stopped caring. When I came back to it, I changed my approach. I started following the main story and only doing the occasional side quest, challenge, or activity as I came across them. Suddenly, I was having fun. I’m enjoying the story, the combat feels great, and I actually want to keep playing. All of those other quests, challenges, and activities aren’t going anywhere, and I can go back and knock them out during the endgame instead of burning myself out trying to clear the map as I go. If you’re a longtime Borderlands player who normally approaches these games the same way I do and you’re struggling to get into Borderlands 4, stop trying to clear everything before moving on. Follow the story and let the rest happen naturally. It completely changed the game for me.

A QUICK UPDATE TO MY REVIEW (Original review written at 25h of playtime, updated after grinding the DLCs, listening to community feedback, and responding to the developer's reply) I feel forced to update this review just to set the record straight. My current playtime speaks for itself, nobody can hit me with the "you didn't play enough" card. When the game dropped, I completely swallowed the hype and bought the most expensive version, the Ultimate Edition with all DLCs included. What a massive, catastrophic mistake. I feel as scammed as a clueless tourist getting their pockets picked in Times Square or the Paris Metro. If I had known it would turn out like this, I would have slammed that refund button after two hours. 1. The Re-evaluation & Writing Visuals & False Hopes: Recently, after my initial review, a few people slid into my DMs telling me to give the game another shot, swearing that patches and expansions had fixed the mess. To be fair and objective, I reinstalled everything and grinded through the new content. Look, not everything is 100% garbage. Visually, the cel-shaded style is still decent (even if it hasn't evolved a single bit compared to older titles), and a couple of dialogue lines actually made me smile. But that's it. Corporate Script: Everything else is drowned in ultra-sanitized, corporate, politically correct writing. It feels like the script was proofread by a Silicon Valley HR committee on tranquilizers. It’s Borderlands flavored with lukewarm water. The game has simply lost its identity. 2. DLCs, Bosses & Content The Ultimate Edition Scam (FedEx Simulator): When it comes to gameplay and content, paying for that Ultimate Edition leaves a terrible taste in my mouth. The DLCs are an absolute scam. Every single quest boils down to running back and forth across the map for no logical reason. This isn't video game content; it’s a FedEx/Amazon delivery simulator on steroids, built entirely on artificial fetch quests to pad out the runtime. I spent so much time running errands I almost asked FedEx for an actual paycheck and a company van. Uninspired Enemies & The $14M Pool: As for the mini-bosses in these expansions, they have the charisma of a spoiled piece of lettuce forgotten at the back of the fridge. They’re just basic mobs with a "Boss" sticker slapped on them and a bloated health bar. The main bosses are the exact same disaster. They tried to do something "fresh" by ditching the iconic mechanics and patterns of the older games. The result? Pure garbage. The bosses are just massive, sluggish bullet sponges with zero imagination, and they are painfully boring to fight, even on the highest difficulty level where the challenge is nonexistent besides emptying your magazines while yawning. Buying this Ultimate Edition feels exactly like Trump's $14 million Washington pool renovation: they promise you something "premium" and magical, and two weeks later, the whole thing turns green, gets choked by algae, and falls apart. A horribly overpriced joke. Shockingly Short Campaign: Another massive issue is the length of the main storyline. If you play in a straight line without even rushing like a maniac, you can wrap up the entire campaign in barely 20 hours flat. In the older games, even if you rushed the main quest, you had at the bare minimum 30 hours of solid gameplay. Here, the content is shockingly bare-bones, and the campaign is over before it even starts. You can clearly feel the lack of effort and depth in the story. 3. Optimization, Loot & Co-op The Shader Hostage Situation: And don't get me started on the optimization, it’s the absolute highlight of this circus. We are talking about a cartoon, cel-shaded game with three polygons fighting each other here, not a photorealistic NASA deep-space simulation running 16K ray-tracing. Yet, the code is so heavy and horribly written that it would bring a Pentagon supercomputer to its knees. The worst part is the shader compilation loading screen at launch. It feels like a literal hostage situation. Even with a high-end, blazing-fast NVMe SSD running at the speed of light, you are stuck waiting for 20 minutes staring at a progress bar moving backwards. You literally have enough time to brew a coffee, order pizza, get married, have two kids, and get a divorce before you can even click "Play". If you don't own a $2,000 graphics card from the future to brute-force through the mess, the game instantly transforms your PC into a space heater for the winter and stutters like a broken 90s PowerPoint slideshow. This is completely unacceptable for a visual engine that hasn't changed a bit in a decade. Worthless Legendaries: The absolute death blow for a looter-shooter is the loot system and the legendary weapons. It’s just sad. In the older Borderlands games, when an orange beam shot out of the ground, you felt a genuine rush of adrenaline! The weapon had a sick design and a unique effect that completely changed your playstyle. Here? The legendaries are absolutely worthless. They're just basic guns with slightly boosted stats and an orange banner to trick your brain. Finding a legendary weapon in this game gives you the exact same thrill as receiving a pair of plain gray socks for Christmas. Zero pleasure, zero excitement. The drop system is completely broken and frustrating. While studios like CD Projekt Red actually worked their asses off to fix Cyberpunk 2077 and win back their player base, Gearbox did the exact opposite: they dug their own grave and buried themselves in it. Co-op Nightmare: On the technical side, co-op play is a nightmare. Between constant lag and endless disconnections, it’s impossible to enjoy a smooth session with friends. The netcode is so unstable it feels like it's being powered by two potatoes and a rusty copper wire. Honestly, if you want actual fun, chaos, memorable bosses, loot that gives you chills, and a well-optimized experience, just go back to Borderlands 2 or Borderlands 3. They do everything ten times better, and they actually run flawlessly. 4. Dev Response & Arrogance Soulless Bot Replies: But the absolute cherry on top under my review is the official response left by the developers. Good old [BL_CL4P_TP] came over to copy-paste a generic, soulless corporate response written by a tired, outdated AI, thanking us for our "incredibly important feedback" when they clearly couldn't care less. It’s pure cynicism to use automated bots to reply to a frustrated community. Tone-Deaf Management: And how can we believe them when, at the same time, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford openly trash-talks his own customers on Twitter? The guy literally stated with a straight face that their mess of a game is "a premium game made for premium gamers" and that complaining players are trying to "drive a monster truck with a lawnmower engine" when talking about our PCs. Are you actually kidding us right now? His miracle solution? Stop complaining and "crank up the DLSS to the max" because the game was designed for it. Translation: "We coded our game with our feet, so go deal with AI upscaling to hide our laziness." The sheer level of arrogance is so stratospheric you could use it to measure the size of his ego. It's sickening. Bottom Line Do not get fooled by their marketing or by the robots replying under Steam reviews just to save face. The core gameplay is a miss, the technical side is trash, the bosses are garbage, the DLCs are a rip-off, the loot is dead, and management actively despises us. I absolutely do not recommend this game at full price, no way. Do not reward this kind of studio behavior. Wait until it drops to $5 in a complete bundle with all DLCs included, and even then, only buy it if you literally have nothing else to do with your life. Save your time and money, and go play the older games instead!

The gameplay is good. The story and characters are awful and forgettable, although they're less annoying than BL3. Not a bad game, just disappointing. Makes me want to play BL2 again. *UPDATE* $70 for this with 0 dlc is unbelievable.

I learned that suffering fools is never worthwhile. Really perfect that's a key to success, now go spread the word about Clap Trap Aeronautics Academy... After 50 hours with Borderlands 4, I walked away with one overwhelming thought: this game has the best gunplay in the franchise trapped inside one of the most forgettable Borderlands I’ve ever played. Let’s get the positives out of the way first because there are quite a few. The shooting is phenomenal. Every weapon feels satisfying, combat is incredibly addictive, the new movement mechanics like the grappling hook and gliding make traversing combat arenas much more dynamic, the skill trees are massive and fun to experiment with, and the cross-play/cross-progression implementation is excellent. Being able to seamlessly continue your character on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or the upcoming Switch 2 version is exactly how modern games should handle it. Unfortunately, almost everything surrounding that fantastic gameplay ranges from mediocre to frustrating. Story & Characters The story is easily one of the weakest in the series. Maybe Handsome Jack set the bar impossibly high back in Borderlands 2, but the main villain here is painfully forgettable. The humor was also lost somewhere along the road. There are attempts at jokes, but they usually feel like the game is desperately waving its arms yelling, “LOOK, I’M BEING FUNNY!” while simultaneously overexplaining the punchline. Instead of laughing, I was punching myself in the face. I even had to dismiss playing several Vault Hunter classes just cause they had a terrible voice actor meaning the only proper way of playing BL4 would be by turning the dialogue volume to 0 and turning the subtitles off. The characters don’t fare much better. The only ones I actually remembered by the end were the returning characters from Borderlands 2. Everyone new blends together into a cast of NPCs whose names I struggled to recall minutes after meeting them. Take Arjay, for example. He’s introduced during the tutorial, dies roughly twenty minutes later, and then shows up again as a post-game boss. My reaction wasn’t excitement it was, “Wait… who is this guy again?” I genuinely had to look him up on the wiki to remember he was the tutorial character. That’s probably the best way I can summarize how little impact the story had on me. Side Quests The side quests In Borderlands 2, you’d accept a quest, immediately get a marker, and maybe listen to some optional radio dialogue while actually playing the game. Borderlands 4 constantly interrupts the gameplay by making you stand around while NPCs ramble for two to five minutes before you’re even allowed to start the mission. During that time, literally nothing happens. You can take your hands off the keyboard, go AFK, take a piss, finish Borderlands 2, come back, and only then will the quest marker finally appear. None of it is skippable and It completely kills the pacing. Gameplay Ironically, the gameplay itself is carried me through all 50 hours. The weapon feel is easily the best the series has ever had. Every firefight is satisfying, movement feels fantastic, and I constantly wanted “just one more mission” because actually shooting things never stopped being fun. If only it consisted of 50 hours of shooting things it would’ve been the best game in the franchise. The skill trees are fantastic and offer a ton of customization. Building my Vex around Trouble was genuinely fun, and by the end of the game my companion became so ridiculously powerful that it could clear encounters almost by itself. I was impressed that the build actually worked. On the other, I realized I barely had to participate anymore. It’s fun to create builds, but it also feels like almost every path is viable enough that your decisions rarely carry much weight. Loot is similarly inconsistent. Legendaries and Mythics are appropriately rare, but they rarely feel exciting because there’s a good chance you’ll immediately find some random weapon lying on the ground with significantly better stats that will carry you for the next five levels. Bosses Most of them are just oversized bullet sponges surrounded by a bunch of smaller enemies so you can easily trigger Second Wind if things go wrong. The genuinely enjoyable bosses are hidden away in the post-game, but telling someone “the bosses get good after the 50-hour campaign” is about as convincing as saying One Piece gets good around episode 6969. Open World The open world is a massive downgrade compared to Borderlands 3. Instead of multiple distinct planets packed with personality, Borderlands 4 gives you one giant map that feels stretched far beyond what it needed to be. Traveling between objectives often means driving through long stretches where absolutely nothing happens. No bandit convoys chasing you. No dynamic encounters. Just empty roads leading to the next objective. Even worse, the world is filled with invisible walls that constantly remind you it isn’t nearly as open as it pretends to be. The different regions also blur together visually with far less biome variety and environmental detail than Borderlands 3. To me, it feels like a downgrade despite being a much newer game. Performance & Optimization Performance is abysmal. The initial shader compilation is long but understandable. The problem is that the game insists on recompiling shaders after seemingly every hardware change or even a GPU driver update, meaning I regularly had to sit through another 15-20 minute wait just to continue my playthrough because NVIDIA sneezed and decided to release yet another driver. That’s frustrating enough on its own, but it’s even harder to justify when the game is such a resource hog while offering surprisingly modest visual improvements. In many areas, it barely looks better than Borderlands 3, a game that was ported to the original Nintendo Switch. Co-op Co-op is another example of Borderlands 4 doing the technical side right while missing the gameplay side. Cross-play and cross-progression are fantastic, inviting your friends if they’re playing on PS or XBOX has never been easier, but the game rarely gives you a reason to actually play together. Enemy scaling mostly means more Badass enemies with bigger health pools, so missions don’t become more interesting they just take longer. Unlike Borderlands 2, where different Vault Hunters often complemented each other with meaningful class synergies, Borderlands 4 feels like everyone is simply playing their own overpowered character next to each other. Final Thoughts I don’t regret playing Borderlands 4. If anything, I’m disappointed because there’s clearly an amazing game buried underneath all of these problems. The combat, movement, weapon feel, and overall gameplay loop are the best the franchise has ever been. But the forgettable story, weak characters, lifeless open world, pacing issues, disappointing loot, repetitive bosses, and baffling optimization constantly get in the way of what should have been one of the best entries in the series. When the credits rolled, my first thought wasn’t “I can’t wait to replay this.” It was, “Well… that was kinda fun. Time to free up 150 GB on my SSD and install a better game.” a Borderlands 4/10. P.S. Do not ever, and I mean ever, try playing this game on a Steam Deck. The “Verified” badge is a straight-up lie and should be removed. The game averages under 20 FPS, it’s a horrible experience.

When you go through the story you slowly start to feel something is missing. You can't quite put your finger on it, though slowly you come to realize that a blandless permeates everything. The same enemies, the same envirenmonts, samish guns. The spark is not there, its just a copypasta open world of mindless shooting. No tactics, no interesting gunfights or mechanics. Just aim and press. For sure the open world, molded like a generic Ubisoft game, doesn't fit BL in the slightest. Where are the crafted envirenmonts, identity in levels and the guns? Where is the soul that started this genre?

It just isn't fun, I don't even know why. BL1 is nostalgic, BL2 is a masterpiece, BL3 is great, but didn't live up to the standard set by 2, and Borderlands 4 is just kinda there. This is a case of an open world game that just feels empty. The guns are all "quirky", but rather than it being in a fun way like they were in 3, they're just annoying to use. I haven't run into any performance issues, other than the game needing to compile shaders every time I fast travel, die, etc. The bosses and other characters were so lackluster that by the time I made it to the end-game I was just too sick of it to play it anymore. The main allies and enemies aren't memorable at all. Maybe I rushed through the main story too fast or something, but I did that on 3 and could still at least remember their names a week after playing it. Not to mention, ya know, actually wanting to play it again that next week. The movement, double jump, jetpack, and grappling hook feel fun to use, but they don't make up for how channelized the map is. You'll either get yourself into an area that has no way out other than jumping into a bottomless pit, or you'll spend 5 minutes trying to find the right path to the next quest marker. It feels like they were expecting the open world to be the big show-stopper addition, and put no work into making it feel alive or fresh. Any enemy encampment is either a monster nest, futuristic base/outpost, or raider shanty town that you've seen in the last 3 main games. All packed with enemies that are just kinda spongy and more of a pain to fight rather than enjoyable. TL;DR Pick it up on a steep discount if you're a fan of the franchise. In it's current state, It's worth about 30 dollars in my opinion, not 70. Performance issues aside, it feels unfinished. There are early access games that have more life and care put into them than this. Combat: 4/10 General Gameplay: 5/10 Story, Quests and Characters: 1/10 World and Environment: 5/10 Weapons, Equipment and Classes: 5/10

My experience of ♥♥♥♥ and borderlands torture 4: Compiling shaders Poor game performance with stuttering, putting visuals on low did not help. "UNKNOWN FAILURE TYPE! (Code: 9)" How about second compiling shaders? Teleporting all over the place due to SHiFT™ server lag. Install config mod to get the game to stop stuttering and massively boost framerate to be playable. How about third compiling shaders? Bullet hitreg either do not register or is delayed by anywhere between 0,5 to 2 seconds due to SHiFT™ server lag. Using vehicles sends me 2,147,483,648 meters into the void. No, I am not joking. HOW ABOUT A FOURTH COMPILING SHADERS COMPILING SHADERS COMPILING SHADERS COMPILING SHADERS C̶̳̉̽͘Ỏ̷̰͠M̵͈̿P̶̢̧̾͝͝Ì̴͉L̴͇̈́́I̸̢͕̭͠N̷̨̯̅G̴̔͆͜ ̷̥̚Ṡ̷͚̗͠H̸̡̠̍̽A̵̫̜̔̽͝D̸̩͎̆Ë̵̩̈R̸̫͗͝S̵̮̖̄͐ͅC̴̨̻͕͙̫͈͗̇͐̋̐͜O̸̘̻̓̂M̸̖̮̦̦̗͉̜̻͚̓̏P̷̩̦͕͇͎̏͋̆̊̀̌́̊͒͜ͅİ̷̧̢̤̻̬͛͒͐̆̈́̃̒͑͗̕L̸͓̺̘̉͒̀͝I̸̤̮̦̭͚̲̥̝̫͇̒͊͆ͅN̵̙̩̻͚̱͎̄́͌͐͝G̷̖̪̣̫̞͕͇͍̯̬͕̈́͑̍̈́̎̾̅͝ ̵̪̖̖͍͚͕́͘S̸̪̝͙̋̾́̎͗̒͆̒͠͝͠H̶̺͉̪̯͓̞̆̉̈́̈́̌̕Ą̵̪̈́̏͜͝͝D̴͈̺̞͓͕̈́̅́̑́͆̂͐͠E̵̗̙̙͓͈̼̳͉͈̕R̴̛̯̻̥̈́̅̏̈́͊̈́͝S̴̭̤͔̪̞̀́̊ͅ List is just some of my technical issues with this game and no, it is not my internet or my computer. I am able to play other online games just fine and my computer is fairly beefy (you can see the attached PC specs). I was not expecting much from the story given the third game, but it had solid gunplay and a co-op that actually worked. I have to note that the other reviews I have seen very much understate the technical issues of this game in co-op mode. It will likely work fine in single-player, but I do not want to play single-player. I want to play co-op with my friends like I have with Borderlands 1, Borderlands 2, Borderlands The Pre-Sequel, Borderlands 3 and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. All games that have FUNCTIONING CO-OP! Truly a game for "premium gamers" (aka suckers like me and my friends). I doubt I am getting a refund since I spent the 2 hour window trying to fix some of the technical issues, but I am gonna try anyways. Update 1: Wowie, I got the refund! Update 2: Recently started replaying Borderlands 2 and it seems like the SHiFT™ server lag has spread to that game as well, but not as bad. Gearbox, how in the ever living ♥♥♥♥ did you manage to ♥♥♥♥ up the co-op of a game that already functioned fine? Also have to say, I think Borderlands 2 is a better looking game than Borderlands 3 and beyond. Less is more for the art style.

I'm still going to recommend this game, it's fundamentally a GOOD game. It does several things amazing, the guns and gunplay are still unparalleled. I got my money's worth for sure. However, it is an overall step back for the series overall. Here is why: Borderlands has been my favourite franchise since 2011. I've played every vault hunter in every game and have killed every boss Gearbox has made. BL4 is supposed to be bigger and more systemized than ever, and I WANT to love it, but I just can't. Here are my three main criticisms. I hate the open world and map design. Linear maps in the previous games opened up so much creative freedom in terms of places you could go and the variety of areas you can see. We had dozens of completely different looking and feeling areas in BL2/BL3. In BL4 it feels like we have 4 zones instead of hundreds. All the new zones feel bland compared to Hyperion or The Fridge or the Dust or Athenas or Prometheus. The enemy of any player in a looter shooter is downtime and BL4 is full of it disguised as gameplay - running, trash packs, vehicles, collectibles. I lost count the amount of times I have to check my map because of verticality or just deliberately confusing design. The maze ship at the end of the Whispering Glacier is just so unnecessary. How is the Echo 6 downtime charging minigame fun? How is the backtracking three orb collectible game fun? It's just busywork. Most of the new characters (including the VHs) are BORING. All of them are people I could imagine meeting in my local library. Rush, Vex, Rafa, Harlowe - they are just sooo... normal. Stable. Heroic. Predictable. Borderlands has always been a universe where everyone is genuinely insane and it is just a matter of degrees. Previous Vault Hunters treated killing with reactions ranging from dark amusement to ecstatic glee. Compare Harlowe to Gaige, they are both genius scientists on the run, but while Gaige expresses literally no remorse for killing her classmate and also laughs maniacally whenever she kills anything, Harlowe is mostly empathic, curious and polite in her dialogue. I honestly 1000% expected Rush to get his head blown off instantly after his introduction. That would be Borderlands. Rush is a great character - for a PG Disney film. Rush in any other BL title would be insanely out of place. I love this series so much, and I really feel compelled to do my part to contribute to making the games better. Thanks for reading.

Experience with the series: Completed all previous Borderlands games. Progress: completed main mission, all available side quests, and most collectibles. Did not engage with the post game past 20 minutes. I'll be frank: my foremost thought of the game is that these developers must despise their player base. There are so many bizarre design decisions that I can't otherwise explain. I don't think I've had this many issues with a title since launch Cyberpunk 2077. First, though: let's talk about what this game did right. I paid for a Borderlands game and I got a Borderlands game so good job there. Overall the gameplay is good and what carries the title. Mobility is fun and gives you lots of options to use it like vehicles, gliding, jetpack dodging, etc. The game has a LOT of content: huge open world with 3 main bosses then a few giant areas to finish up the main campaign. Honestly this can also be viewed as a negative if it feels like it's dragging (which it tends to). The sound design is crisp, crunchy, and overall superb. Lots of build variety! Each of the 3 character trees has 3 different sub paths and you can respec rather easily. There aren't a lot of quests I want to highlight: but there is a quest with a version of Bop It in here and that amuses me. Now let's discuss some issues with the game: The writing is just plain bad. This is genuinely the only title I can think of that would benefit from having AI writing... not because it'd improve the quality, but at least it'd be done quicker since I'm tuning it out regardless. It's the writing equivalent to a highschooler going ham on Mountain Dew and Dorritos on a Friday night. There are SO MANY states in which you can trigger a shader compilation: booting the game up, loading into a game session, teleporting around the map, and even minor adjustments to the graphics like FPS limit/vsync. Keep in mind some of these caching sessions can take 10-15min each. Some of the early propaganda speaker events are terrible. They have enemies that spawn seemingly endlessly and even a HINT of an enemy, two buildings away, VERY far outside the yellow circle of the event can cause your robot to just refuse to work on the speaker. Everything about carrying crimson caches to bases is abysmal: any action outside of shooting guns causes you to drop it, can't use a vehicle otherwise you drop it, bases are often up several grappling sections in which you drop it when you use one, and sometimes the cache will just straight up despawn if left on the ground for 3~ seconds. It's 2026 and the game about shooting buckets of guns doesn't have an option to skip dialogue. I'd often start a quest just to go stretch or take a bathroom break because I knew the NPCs would be yapping for a good few minutes. Turning a game's dialogue volume to 0% shouldn't improve your experience but well... here we are. The map is GIGANTIC and you get so few fast travel points, sequestered mostly to bases you capture. You have loads of respawn points but can't fast travel to them? Why? The auto waypoint system often bugs, trailing into the sky, through solid walls, or just shows you a completely different path separate than the on screen directions. Many objectives, especially finding primordial vault locations, give you a HUGE search area. I can't tell you... how absolutely boring it is to wander a giant circle playing hot-or-cold just looking for an objective to softly push so you can get back to the actual game. There's a mission where you can't touch lasers to get a bonus and doing delicate platforming in this first person game feels awful. The meteor event is garbage single player. It takes 20 seconds to kill some of the harder enemies that drop 8 crystals but the crystals despawn if left on the ground for longer than 1 second. Just frustrating. Money and eridium are nigh useless until post game. It's annoying to die and lose 10% of your cash, but it's even more obnoxious to hoard a resource not having a real use for it most of the game. Unique weapons have unique stats. Cool. Wish I knew what they did. If you inspect a gun it tells you what each stat does... except the unique ones. If a gun has a unique stat of "Mirror Sheen" the inspection description will literally just be, "Mirror Sheen". This game ran weirdly poorly for my decent rig. Had to knock everything down from Ultra to High to stop having my machine sound like it was trying to take off into space. At the 30% mark of the game I just started skipping all available cut scenes. Not a great sign... but even then I wouldn't put a "uh oh help this NPC within 30sec or he dies" scenario after a boss when I'm looking through loot and just zoning out because dialogue is happening. By the time I realized there was an actual timer to help someone they were basically already dead and I just threw my hands up like, "...ok". I'm still unsure why dying mills 10% of your cash. Doesn't feel like it compels me to not die. Also I don't like it when a main quests has a "haha just a little trolling" objective that will kill you and take your money for no reason. Not a fan of a game that will actively patch itself outside the Steam interface. I'm guessing it has to do with Epic's servers, but it feels off. The rift champion bubble just needs work. They shouldn't be able to be knocked 50 feet outside it leaving you to hope and chuck grenades at it in hopes that it dies before your 5sec timer expires making you lose the mark. This is a bad one: map settings don't save. This means changes to your legend like "show no completed objectives" or the level of zoom you have set WILL reset with each new game session. Do you have the DLC? That's a shame because those icons will appear in your face and on the map whether you like it or not. The bike will randomly despawn in areas that allow you to use it, even at full health. One of the final areas is a huge city that doesn't allow you to use your bike so lots of hoofin' it. I'll be real: Vex's familiar Trouble just doesn't look cool. It changes based on which tree and specialization you have, but none of the iterations look good. How do I hate the visuals of an ethereal tiger? NPCs are mostly locked to 2sec animations that loop forever which doesn't look the greatest. Sometimes chests visually glitch to appear as if they've already been opened but in reality they are still closed. Animal enemies don't often have a great counter other than, "kill quickly". The elephants and threshers can get particularly bad. I don't think I've ever hated a boss in a Borderlands game enough to memorize its name like I did with Shadowpelt. Want a huge, invisible wolf that only lets you damage its health for 5sec before fully regening its shield? It's easily the worst fight in the entire series. The Vex familiar has weird aggro parameters. It will often just stare at me, rolling around on the ground as I'm actively being shot in the face. It also tends to just teleport through the floor and leave me to my fate. There's a specific skill to Vex that gets a floating, green skull to loop around you if no enemies are around and I can't tell you how obnoxious it is to have that thing loop around you at high speeds constantly making those noises. I had a main story NPC tell me, "we have a demon to HUNT" for hours of the game and I'm glad I can finally stop hearing him randomly say it. Yes it is a new Borderlands game, but it comes with a hyper amount of annoying issues and weird lack of quality-of-life. We're almost a year out from its launch and I still don't think it's ready.

Borderlands 4 huh... another one of those games where I really wish there was a "neutral" review, rather then just positive or negative. PROS; - Gameplay is indeed the best it's been in the series to date. Gunplay, classes and abilities, movement. Without question on this front, it's the best in the series. - Fantastic color pallet and art-style. Very vibrant. - Good sound-design and OST. - Voice acting is solid. Some series favorites return. (Looking @ you, stacked-hat lady.) - Storyline is good. A more serious tone this time around, with some of that classic Borderlands humor. - Tons of replay value. Several classes. Lots of collectables. Finishing the base game without DLC on my first class took me just shy of 80~ hours, and this was with skipping essentially all of the side-content in the last zone of the game, at this point I was simply checked out and wanted to finish the game. CONS; - Lets talk about the elephant in the room. The performance. The performance in this game, is EGREGIOUSLY bad. Don't let Randy Pitchford force-feed his bulls*it down your throat. Frame-Generation is NOT an excuse for a poorly optimized, undercooked product. This is sheer banal laziness. I have a very powerful rig, and many others with the same have documented, it doesn't matter. It's practically a requirement to play this game at any remote level of consistent frame-rate and visual fidelity. Inexcusable. This is the ONLY game out of 100s I own that if frame-generation is disabled, it's nearly unplayable. INEXCUSABLE RANDY. SHEER. BANAL. LAZINESS. - While the gun models do look good, the scopes/ADS in this game are just terrible. Some of them are so convoluted in appearance it makes using ADS like playing the game on Pain-Olympics mode due to interfering with your actual targeting so much. What are you guys thinking with this? Indifferent; - I found most of the side-quests in the game to be pretty underwhelming with mid writing. Not to mention tedious. - $130~ for what amounts to the complete version of the game is a bit steep as far as price-point is concerned. IN CLOSING; - If you're a fan of the franchise, this is it right here in terms of gameplay. The cost of admission however is high, and the performance is without a shadow of the doubt the most embarrassing effort of any one dev-studio on any large triple-A game to date. Probably ever. MMV. I may or may not come back to this in the future when the DLC goes on sale. It's going to be a while, though. 7/10. It'd be in 8 but man, I'm really not kidding about the performance problems.

Oh boy, Borderlands 4. Definitely one of those "in context" review. I am going to put a positive recommendation mainly because right now it seat at "mixed" and considering what the value per euro it's kind of obscene. I got it for half of its (hefty) public price and yes, yes, it is a bland addictive fast food of a meal, but it's really a lot of big macs for the money. Even if you play just the campaign with most of the vanilla side quest that's 100h. Even full price that's 80c per hour wich few cool indie game compete with. It really is *not* a steal, you can see the production value, this game clearly took a lot of work. Is it a good borderlands though? Depends I guess. Mechanically it's probably the best game although differences with the 3rd... didn't strike me that much? Of course it's all over the place and there is a huge variety in guns that's kind of something until you start legendary hunting and get weird OP guns that put everything else the game has to offer in the dust, often trivializing the game. Maybe it's because I am a veteran who knows that you die way more in this game from exploding barrels and your own grenades than anything else but the game was really too easy for me until I attempted to solo the end game content which ended up not being possible, big disappointment. The mobility is a big improvement in fight though, IMO it's done pretty well. Vehicles are a bit better to use etc. It has the best headshot noise in any game, it's pornographic, so satisfying. Lack of midgets to headshot though (IYKYK) but interesting opposition - the studio is really good at making a set of enemies with unique animations and game mechanics. Clearly a strong point. The writing? Well it's probably on par or better than Borderland 1. I never smiled but I was never irked. Some characters have at least some lasting powers. The bad guy is bland AF. It's just your inoffensive story for a game that had amazing writing in one of their game (Borderlands 2) by accident. One thing it does better than any other game though is your own character's writing, at least Rafa. It has to be the first time I actually acknowledged and liked my character in a Borderlands game. Which is a huge feat, it has to be said. The problem is that the writing in the 3 was so bad we didn't notice another glaring it had that aslo cripples Borderlands 4 because no one yelled about it to Gear box back then. The disappearance of any atmosphere. Of any mood. Some say it's Jasper Kid being gone but I don't think it's that or only that. At some points the soundtrack can even run its old gimmicks pretty well. The real issue started when we left Pandora. IMO one of they key common quality of all good open world FPS is that they induce melancholy somewhere past the 20h mark. STALKER, Fallout... not Farcry :P You go in a state where you connect to the game space in a deep way, navigating from this feeling of melancholy induced by the world, the mood to the dopamine of killing and looting. Borderlands 1 and 2 had it because Pandora is a perfect stage for that. It's desperate, derelict place. I remember in the first one in the DLC, there was a hub at some kind of "end of the world" which was just breath taking. Borderlands 2 introduced greenery but it still worked because it was this one obscene contrast with the rest of the world. Then Borderlands 3 went "all the landscape", which immediately meant "none of them". Nothing meant anything. In Borderlands 4 the act 1 (which will last you 30h if you do side quests) is some wow like bland greenery. It has zero mood. It's really a sad thing. The rest of the map is way better but even if it at times look stunning, it never gets melancholic. It feels just like a big theme park. I have some love for B1 and B2, but this one leaves me no memory. It's compelling to play, it works, but it's not a gaming moment I guess. Still, it's an honest game, that does some things very well and fail on others. Compare to what steam ratings mean for other single player games it should be at least good, bordering on very good IMO. Few, took me a moment to sort my thoughts on that one! Have a good day.

I love the borderlands franchise. I really wanted to like this game but i wont lie, i am sure i'm close to finishing and have more cons than pros. I waited to get it until it was on sale since the CEO of the company said " if you were a true fan, you'd fine a way to make it happen" when the pricing was outrageous when it first came out, that put a bad taste in my mouth. But now putting almost 100 hours into the game, i just... its too much. there is too much going on, you have no feelings towards the characters, old and new. i HATE that its just one big map instead of going to different planets, there are too many glitches, i feel more frustrated playing than actually having fun. it doesn't have the spark anymore. The gameplay just isn't like it used to be. At this point i'm just ready to finish the game then uninstall it. These are just my personal opinions.
