Loved the game all the way until patch 1.5. Game definitely has it flaws but in the end very enjoyable. The story was good, combat was great(ish). Dev single-handedly butchered the whole theme of the story by changing plotlines and catering to the idiotic nationalist, who would never touch the game. Would not recommend until dev fix this or give global players a way to revert this themselves. *cough* localization=1 *cough*

This game deserves way better than what it's getting right now. I can’t believe a clown show like AC Shadows is getting nearly 80% positive reviews, while this piece of art is sitting at 45%. Seriously. Let’s get the performance stuff out of the way: I didn’t have any performance issues personally, so I’m not going to review it based on that. And let’s be honest Elden Ring launched with stuttering, Nightreign is locked at 60fps, and those games still got praise for being great. Cyberpunk was going through hell at release, look at it now. So yeah, if you want to buy and are worried about that, I'd say give it some time, we've been living with these kinds of problems for a while now. If you bought and can’t even play it however, sure, that’s valid. But I’ve seen people in this same section saying their 4090 can’t run it, and we all know that’s BS. Some people are clearly just farming Awards. Steam reviews can be a circus sometimes since the whole Award system was added. Now, the game itself is the most fun I’ve had since Elden Ring. Last year’s Monke didn’t scratch that itch for me, but this one did. The combat is rich with variety. I stuck with a dodge and parry build, and it made me want to revisit Sekiro. Funny thing is, I didn’t really enjoy Sekiro back when I played it because I had too many Souls before getting into Sekiro. I forced myself through it and didn’t love it. But this game strikes a perfect balance between dodge and parry, and actually makes that style fun and satisfying. Feels like a blend of the best FromSoft elements. It's like Dark Souls 3 with a proper parry system, maybe even some Bloodborne energy...I haven’t played that one. There’s also something subtly DS2-ish in there. Not sure what exactly...maybe the slow recovery and flask use or longer boss runs? Say I'm crazy, DS2 wasn't that good, but here that makes it more rewarding in the end. The key thing is: it respects your time, it has shortcuts. You’ll spend maybe 10 seconds on an elevator doing emotes before reaching a boss room, not a full minute like that awful Demon’s Souls last boss run. It feels fair and keeps you motivated. It has some new mechanics, too. "Obliterate" is a cool one. You can stun humanoid enemies with a heavy attack from behind, which adds a layer of strategy to human boss fights. More than once I found myself planning that hit instead of just dodging or parrying. "Madness" is another one, and it’s small things like these that really freshen up the experience. The story is surprisingly good. It’s engaging and, best of all, understandable. That’s all I’ll say about that. The difficulty spike was a bit frustrating, it went from easy to hard really fast Overall, this game is good. It even made me want to revisit older games like Sekiro. I truly hope they fix the technical issues soon(like they said they will), because it deserves way better than what it’s getting right now. In my opinion, it's these studios that deserve our support, not companies that have had it for ages and done nothing positive with it.

First, improvement and optimization are always welcome. But the sudden change to the plot is such bullsh. - Turning off the ability to farm some human enemies just contradict the whole design of the game. Now you can really only get Madness with the Incense, which is ??? - And then, why making Yu Xia and the Emperor live? Wouldn't it basically just break the whole plot of the game? Going against the law of nature will turn those reborn into monstrosity abomination? So, if the Emperor could be revive without any consequences, why not Bai Kru? Why not Honglan? Why not Fang Ling? And most importantly, why not Bai Yu - the actual reason why this very game even started? Is the Emperor somewhat more "deserving" than the others? Give me a real reason. - Why keeping Zhao Yun alive? He's lingering around Shu for more than 1000 years using the Jade Feather Chisel. After defeating him we got the chisel, wouldn't that mean logically speaking, he should be put to rest? Both from story point and gameplay point? Like explain to me how does he stay alive after giving Wuchang the chisel? - And last but not least, you make everyone sitting through almost 10s of fullscreen of texts saying "the story is all fictional", why even need to make change like this? Are we making game for illiterated individuals or what? This is the first time in my life playing these offline story driven game having the story heavily altered WITHOUT the DLC.

The Honest and Detailed Review from a 3K-Hour Souls-Like Veteran First and foremost — yes, this is a genuinely positive review, and no, I wasn’t paid a single cent to write this. I swear by the very feathers Wuchang wears. 1. Performance (the most debated topic so far) I’m running i7-14700KF with an RTX 4070 Ti SUPER — a high-end setup. I rarely face performance issues with my system, so when I do, it's usually a problem on the game’s side. That’s why I prepared my system carefully for this game. For context: I’ve manually increased my virtual memory from 2GB to 20GB to ensure smooth operation, my cpu is turbo-boosted to 5.4GHz (from 3.4), and my GPU is correctly clocked and cooled. With that setup, I launched the game at 2K resolution, set all settings to Medium, enabled DLSS + Frame Gen, and ran the game in Fullscreen Windowed mode. I averaged 140 FPS, with rare drops to 110 during intense combat. After switching to High settings across the board, the game still ran smoothly at around 100–120 FPS. Yes, performance issues exist — I've seen other reviews. But in my case, the game runs perfectly, with zero crashes, minimal stuttering (expected in fast-paced fights), and no frame pacing issues. It’s important to note that the game’s graphical complexity isn’t very high (more on that below), so even mid-range setups might find a performance sweet spot with a bit of tweaking. 2. Graphics Let’s be honest: this isn’t Black Myth Wukong, and it’s not Dark Souls 3 either. Wuchang lands somewhere in the middle. The details, animations, lighting, facial expressions, and even clothing and hair physics — all are solid. On a high-end system, I’d say it's a 6/10, elevated to a 8/10 thanks to resolution and stable FPS. I’ve only played about two hours so far, but the environmental design already feels immersive. The landscapes are beautiful, the armor designs are rich and grounded, and the natural scenery captures the spirit of the historical time period the game is set in. The artistic style is distinct and focused, not overly flashy or distracting from the gameplay is what I am saying. If you approach the game with low expectations or nitpick every small thing, you’ll obviously find flaws, but no game is perfect, especially on release day. What really matters is that Wuchang has its own visual identity that supports its dark narrative tone and enhances immersion. And it feels so after just about of hour into the game. 3. Gameplay Here’s where I must be a bit more critical — combat feels a little stiff and simplified, especially by modern Souls-like standards. The first moments with the controller gave me a good impression, movement is intuitive and animations flow well enough. But after trying multiple weapons, I noticed a lack of depth in some movesets. The short sword, for instance, feels smooth, like dancing mid-air. But the axe is sluggish and clunky. That said, this is not necessarily bad — it's about finding what suits your style. I’d rate the weapon design and movesets 6-7 out of 10 in terms of complexity and fluidity, and I have not seen all of them obviously. Still, the combat system is serviceable, and above all, familiar. It’s that classic Souls-like rhythm: dodging, timing, resource management. There's Magic in the game as well — a surprisingly effective addition. I’ve only scratched the surface of the spell system, but I can already see it adding meaningful variety to encounters. And I haven’t even mentioned the beautiful japanese-style sorceress in minimal armor wielding a long magical katana. Call it a trope — I call it art. In short: this is our beloved Souls-like formula with a few twists — solid movement, decent combat, unique weapons, and promising magic mechanics. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s definitely engaging. 4. Story I haven’t seen enough of the story to judge it deeply yet. However, it’s clear that: - there is a narrative, and it’s there from the start thankfully. - side quests exist, encouraging players to stay attentive. - there seem to be romantic undertones, though I haven't seen them unfold yet. The story is simple and linear for now, but that’s often a strength in this genre. You’re not bombarded with exposition. Instead, you're given just enough to stay intrigued. And most importantly — this simple story adds to the experience, and it is all that matters really. 5. Difficulty & Balance With over 3,000 hours in the genre, I can confidently say that Wuchang feels easy, at least in the first two hours. Everything is intuitive and linear so far, with a gentle learning curve. The game does not offer multiple difficulty settings, which is normal for the genre. You get stronger by farming xp (or whatever the local equivalent of "souls" is), and that alone can give you a soft difficulty slider. If you’re new to Souls-likes — Wuchang is very beginner-friendly. 6. Sound & Music This part surprised me a little. I’m usually drawn to powerful, orchestral soundtracks like those in Elden Ring or Dark Souls. But in Wuchang, the music is more ambient and culturally grounded. You’ll mostly hear soft bamboo flutes, low ambient tones, and natural sounds like running water, rustling grass, and wind through trees, etc. It’s subtle — not meant to hype you up, but to pull you into the world’s melancholy and decay. There’s nothing bombastic or cinematic YET, but it works well with the tone. Perhaps I missed some of the deeper music cues, being so focused on progression and combat but still, the sound design fits greatly, and sometimes that’s all you need. Final Verdict I'm not here to speak for everyone. According to launch-day reviews, Wuchang currently sits at 22% positive — overwhelmingly negative. And I saw the red flags too: early bug reports, tech complaints, scathing takes. But I still bought the game on release day, booted it up, and gave it a fair shot. And guess what? I’m glad I did. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is a good game. A solid, competent, and beautiful entry in the Souls-like genre. It runs well, has artistic flair, and offers exactly what fans of the genre crave: challenge, exploration, mystery, and progression. It may not innovate heavily. It may not blow your mind in the first hour. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth your time. In a world where marketing and viral reviews often dictate our experience before we even touch a game, sometimes you need to just play it yourself. And hey, you can always set a timer for 1 hour and 58 minutes, take a few screenshots, and refund it if it’s not for you. But if you’re like me, you might just find yourself diving deeper than you expected. P.S. I hope this review helps someone out there decide for themselves before giving up on what might become one of their favorite surprises of the year. And thanks for reading! Good luck everyone.

This is a good game, I just don't think I like it very much. I'll finish it, and maybe change my review, but often I just find that I'm not having a lot of fun while playing. Positives - - Level design is well done. With most games, I try to go the way that won't lead to progression first so I don't miss anything, and in this game I found that while it was hard to tell which way lead to progression, I usually ended up going the optional way and looping back around to progress again. The shortcuts and ways that the level links up is done quite well. - Boss design so far has been pretty cool (except a certain woman in a water area who was rather dull). - I like the madness mechanic, it's fun. - Funny dancing guy. - Outfits are pretty cool. Performance/Optimization This game isn't graphically any more impressive than other games larger in scope and that have released before it, yet, it has forced up-scaling, and performs worse than those other better looking games. (not including MHW lmao). If you don't mind ghosting and grainy artifacts, then up-scaling/FG will make this game playable for anyone with a mid range set-up. I didn't really have any issues with performance consistency, and found it perfectly playable at mostly stable 90+ FPS, but I just think that there isn't really any justification for the lack of optimization that requires up-scaling to get decent and stable frames, and I'm really tired of games relying so heavily on DLSS/FSR. The recommended/minimum specs should NEVER be tested and listed with up-scaling on. Up-scaling tech is fantastic, but it's a monkeys paw, because while it should allow us to get more frames at higher resolutions with heavy tech like ray-tracing, instead, it's used in place of good optimization, and we end up with a net zero gain overall, or even worse than where we were before up-scaling was around. Story I found the narrative to be overall a bit... Directionless? I understand that Souls games are very vague and the narrative is mostly optional, but they always make sure that from the jump, you understand the big, overarching goals (Kill these four dudes and use their souls, burn the tree, link the flame etc etc). In this game, maybe it's just my brain-rot addled mind, but I have no idea wtf my overall goal is, I get the smaller goals, go here, find this person etc, but I feel like I don't really have a reason to care about anything? Like, why am I doing all this? Did I miss it somewhere? I need a motivator, and since loot is kinda sparse, a narrative one would be good. Combat Animations The animations in this game are all quite flashy, you do spins, and jumps and flips, and during all of that, you might get a hit-box out two or three times, meanwhile, while you're spinning around before your attack actually comes out, you're wide open to getting hit. Flashy animations are awesome in character action games, DMC, Bayonetta, MGRR, Nier etc, they're amazing games with flashy combat. Flashy animations are just kinda frustrating in a souls game though most of the time, I mostly don't use weapon arts with long animations in Elden Ring unless I'm OP'd. I want to get a hit out, and be able to back off. That's the point of a souls game right? Taking hits bad, enemies do a heap of damage and can stun-lock you, you don't want to risk dying and having to run back. They have this "Clash" system there, to mitigate this a bit, so you can do a flashy combo, but it feels like a band-aid on something that doesn't feel like it fits. Pulling a combo string and hoping the move with the clash is timed when the enemy decides to attack, and not in between, just feels cumbersome when you can just poke with a spear instead and reliably avoid the risk. Fights I have a few issues with the combat itself in this game, first, you can get hit during your get-up animation, which is ridiculous. Sometimes you'll perfect dodge an attack, but end up still within a lingering hit-box, so you'll take damage anyway. Weapons and hit reactions feel a bit lackluster. Progression Progression in this feels really underwhelming. I don't feel like I have a lot of fine control over my build, and leveling up doesn't feel all that impactful. The skill tree is an interesting idea, but I feel like tying the skills directly to specific weapons, and having us allocate stats individually like other souls games would have both made the weapons feel more important, and given us more of a sense of accountability and ownership over our game-play. Gooner Stuff I don't really get the hype man, it's there I guess, but SB did it much better. Aside from that, I think a lot of the costumes I've found so far look pretty cool, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Summary This game isn't BAD, I just don't find myself having a lot of fun while playing it, and when there are SO many good games to play right now, I don't feel like it's a time sink that I can recommend personally. For me, I need good loot/progression, really satisfying combat, a really engaging story, or the holy grail of all three... This game just doesn't quite hit the mark on any of these for me. I'm sure there are plenty of people who will really enjoy it, and I hope these devs are able to make more stuff, and refine their product. I'll change this review if my opinion shifts by the time I finish, I still don't find the optimization acceptable, and hope they work on it, but I won't hold my breath.

Though rough around the edges, this Wuxia RPG delivers a rewarding experience and recaptures the spirit of the original Dark Souls My feelings for Wuchang: Fallen Feathers are rather complicated. It’s a Souls-like that delivers some incredible highs, but also frustrating lows. Even after completing all the endings and achievements, I struggle to recommend it wholeheartedly. It’s punishing, but often for the wrong reasons, and filled with no shortage of niggling gameplay issues. To say this game tests your patience to the utmost limit is putting it lightly. Yet even with all these hiccups, I really enjoyed my time with Wuchang. I consider it as one of my favorite Souls-likes in recent memory, right up there with The First Berserker: Khazan. Chances are, if you're checking this out, you’re already into Souls-likes. The vibe is very Dark Souls meets Black Myth: Wukong, with bamboo forests, ancient Chinese architecture, and creepy supernatural stuff. But there are some standout areas too, like the bizarre final dungeon, which is straight-up nightmare fuel. Where the game shines most is its exploration. The level design is spectacular, and honestly, I haven’t had this much fun wandering through a semi-open world since the original Dark Souls. From the tutorial cave where you first wake up all the way to the endgame zones, almost every area is connected through ladders, gates, and hidden cave paths that loop all the biomes together nicely. There’s nothing quite like battling your way through a creepy forest full of man-eating bird monsters, only to suddenly pop out behind a rebel camp you spotted sometime ago in the horizon. Roughly a third of the world is optional too, so there’s a ton of stuff to discover off the beaten path. I'd wager most players skipped through most of the main village in Worship’s Rise without even realizing it. All in all, my only real complaint with the exploration is how some areas really, really needed more Shrine checkpoints. Too much backtracking is the opposite of fun. Now there’s a lot to unpack when it comes to gameplay. Wuchang contains a bunch of cool systems like Skyborn Might, Magic, and Temperance that help make combat feel dynamic. You can respec and transmog from the start, which should honestly be standard in every RPG nowadays. It also has what might be the best weapon upgrade system in the entire genre, where when you upgrade one weapon, the refinement level applies to all other weapons of the same type. But although the tutorials cover the basics, a lot of critical info is left out. I didn’t figure out how to upgrade weapons past +4 until much later, and it wasn’t until the final dungeon that I realized some skill tree nodes can actually be leveled up more than once. Disciplines, active skills for each weapon type, feel underwhelming, aside from the broken Blademaster for Dual Blades. Most pale in comparison to Weapon Skills, which are tied to specific weapons and generally feel more impactful. Even Disciplines that enable staple abilities like parrying and blocking feel pointless due to the existence of Clash. Speaking of which, the Clash mechanic is what sets this game apart. Time your strike just right, and you’ll cancel out an enemy’s attack with a flashy spark effect and take no damage. It’s kind of like Reflections in Khazan, but easier to use and spammable. Chaining Clashes against bosses is absolute martial arts cinema at its finest. Downside is that it only works against weapon-wielding enemies. Weapon balance is decent, though there are clear favorites. Dual Blades are absolutely busted, with high DPS and great synergy with the lifesteal Temperance. The Longsword and Axe are also powerful options with their notable damage and stagger potential. One-Handed Swords are situational early on since the good spells and Magic nodes are locked behind lategame progression. Spears are… not great, sadly. Subpar skills and unremarkable damage. Enemy variety is surprisingly varied, ranging from regular bandits to enormous fiends. However, later areas get rough. Expect mobs with absurd poise, unblockable grabs, and instant-death attacks. The final two regions are particularly brutal, with crazy bird warriors that can turn you to Swiss cheese before you can blink, and towering monstrosities with bloated HP pools. Even regular enemies become obnoxious by ambushing and pushing you off cliffs (it's funny how overused this gimmick is). Bosses are similarly punishing. You've probably heard horror stories about the infamous Commander Honglan, but honestly, most bosses with any semblance of mobility will pose a challenge. They have insanely long combos that drain your entire stamina bar, leaving no time to breathe or heal. Clash is your best bet, but it's not usable on every boss. On the plus side, very few are HP sponges, and some become way easier depending on your weapon choice. Slow animations add to the struggle, especially the painfully long knockdown recovery. For a seasoned warrior like Wuchang, it seems out of place watching her take 10 business days to get back on her feet. It wouldn’t be so bad if not for the fact that there aren't any i-frames whatsoever after recovering. And of course, enemies, especially bosses, love to spam their combos the second you stand up, so getting juggled to death is just another Tuesday. Wuchang also takes her sweet time chugging her Manna Vase (healing flask), but this is manageable once you learn the proper healing windows. Story-wise, I was invested in Wuchang’s quest to save her sister. But unless you're familiar with Chinese history or Buddhist philosophy, a lot of it might fly over your head. The story is heavily inspired by Samsara, the cycle of death and rebirth, and the narrative is very fragmented like most other Souls-likes. Of note, I liked how Tao Qing, the merchant NPC, fills in boss backstories when you bring him their drops. Most of the lore is gated behind NPC questlines, but I have mixed feelings about how the game handles their progression. I get that vague quests are part of Souls-likes, but here, it's ridiculously easy to break entire questlines just by entering the wrong area at the wrong time. Nian Suichang, Huang Jian’e, and the White-Robed Elder all have major loredumps tied to them, yet their subplots are nearly impossible to finish without a guide. Wuchang runs on Unreal Engine 5 and it definitely shows. There are only a few recent titles I’ve played that can rival its stunning environmental detail. Textures, lighting, and world design all look fantastic. The gory scenery is also really well done. That said, performance can be rough. I ran into a lot of stutters and FPS drops, mostly in Worship’s Rise due to heavy vegetation. Turning off Global Illumination and lowering Shadows helped. And lastly, the music. Nothing to write home about, but the title theme and final boss choir are bangers. Wuchang is a bit of a messy gem. It's rough around the edges, but if you're into Souls-likes and don’t mind a little jank, it’s a rewarding ride. The exploration is top-tier, the combat has some seriously hype moments (Clash is so fun), and the lore is worth digging into if you’re up for it. It’s not the most polished game, but it’s a highly enjoyable one. And for me, that’s more than enough.

The game launched today, and after playing for about 7 hours and beating 3 story bosses, I can say it’s definitely a solid title. I’d give it an easy 8 out of 10. It’s not on the same level as Black Myth: Wukong, but it still feels very unique and interesting in its own way. The biggest reason I see for the negative reviews is the performance — and yes, that’s fair. The performance isn’t great, but I’d still say it’s okay overall. I’m playing on an RTX 4070 Super with an i5-14600KF in 4K, all settings on high, DLSS at 70% with 2x Frame Generation. I’m getting a stable 85–90 FPS. So while it’s not fully maxed out, the game still looks stunning. It’s definitely not a title for ultra-budget PCs, but it’s not a game that can only run well on RTX 5090 either. Where WUCHANG really shines is the combat. It feels truly unique, with different combos, "disciplines" tied to each weapon type, magic, summons, weapon buffs, and more. The only soulslike that compares in terms of combat depth is Elden Ring. Weapons have weight, dodging and deflecting feel great, and everything has a good sense of impact. If you enjoy more linear soulslikes like Dark Souls 3 or Lies of P, I’d definitely recommend giving WUCHANG a try. It feels like a breath of fresh air in the genre — and for such a low price, it’s absolutely worth it. UPD: After 10+ hours of playtime, I started experiencing frequent stutters. I tend to encounter this in games where I use Frame Generation, so I decided to turn it off — which helped. I also lowered Global Illumination and Reflections Quality from High to Medium, and adjusted DLSS from 70 (Quality) to 60 (Balanced). With these tweaks, I'm now getting a stable 55–60 FPS, dipping to around 45 FPS in heavier scenes. Still playable, but definitely not flawless.

Overall, an enjoyable game. But, before I get into why I like it, I'll explain what's going on with its review score first. Why is it reviewed so poorly? There are a few reasons. There were apparently some pricing issues in China. Some people felt the game was too punishing. Then it was updated and some people felt it became too forgiving. But I'm going to focus on what I think are the biggest reasons. Edit: A comment was added that explains things a bit more. I'll add it to the bottom of this review for more visibility. Performance Many people were hit by performance issues. Honestly, I feel like the minimum and recommended specs are too optimistic. Instead of just trusting them, I'd recommend doing some research to see how your setup will perform. Censorship Yup. This game takes place during the downfall of the Ming dynasty. You fight historical figures, and you can also get attacked by civilians. Turns out some people were offended that you could kill Han Chinese from the Ming dynasty. To handle this, the game was censored in a post-release patch. And, honestly, the censorship just sucks. The censorship changes the story, as characters who died now live on. And it was just so clumsy and awkward. After the censorship, when you defeat a historical character, instead of falling to the ground they just... stop. It looks like a bug, not a feature. It looks like what happens when someone's internet breaks in a multiplayer game. It ruins the moral choices and tragic tone of the game. Before, when civilians attack you by throwing rocks (which barely do damage), you could choose to fight back, or show them mercy by leaving them alone. But now that choice is made for you, since they don't attack you and you can't attack them. The censorship significantly affected an entire gameplay section. There was a whole part that was originally a 3-way fight between you, soldiers, and monsters. The censorship made those soldiers unkillable, and they no longer attack you, so now it's a 2v1 with you and soldiers fighting monsters, and just makes that whole area so trivial. Alright, with that out of the way, here's what I think about the game itself. Gameplay mechanics I loved the gameplay mechanics. I don't play many souls-like games, so forgive me if I gush over something that's pretty standard. First, there's Skyborn Might. Might are points that you can spend to cast spells, use weapon class skills (called Disciplines), or unique skills for each weapon. Gaining Might is so satisfying. The basic way to gain Might is to execute perfect dodges. Basically, you get rewarded for using the I-frames in a dodge. After a few upgrades, you can also gain might from attack combos or parrying. I just loved this risk and reward system, and I got to play this game fast and aggressively, which I like. Speaking about risk and reward, there's also the Madness system. When your Madness is high, you deal more damage, and also some of your moves get stronger. But you also take more damage at high Madness. If you die while your Madness is too high, then it will spawn the Inner Demon where you last died, which will fight you (or other enemies). The variety of moves is also great. Like I said, there are Disciplines, and weapon skills. The basic Disciplines are like blocking while using an axe or an evasive kick while using a sword. But you can unlock and equip new ones for weapons in a matching class. And the weapon skills are great. For example, with Skyborn Might, you can make a whip sword extend and hit enemies that are far away. There isn't a lot of weapon variety, but each weapon feels special, thanks to these skills. Some Disciplines and weapon skills can also be mixed into a combo, allowing you to do things like perform the strongest move in a light attack chain in 3 moves instead of 5. There's also a lot of magic with interesting animations and effects. The magic isn't your basic "shoot fire out of your hands" stuff. And while I'm speaking about variety, I have to mention the armor. Armor sets are divided into head, chest, arm, and leg armor. You can mix and match, but you can also alter any piece of armor to look like any other piece of armor, so stats don't limit your style and vice-versa. Nearly every time you beat a boss, you get the chance to get their armor, too, and steal their look. Exploration I also loved exploration. Each time you enter a new area, it feels like a maze. But once you open up a few shortcuts, every area turns out to be simple and interconnected. There's just something satisfying about fighting through a tough area, then opening up a shortcut that lets you rest at a shrine before going back. And there are a lot of secrets to look for. Funnily enough, some great secrets are found by falling for traps, like grabbing an item on a breakable platform. Visuals Medieval China with a horror twist looks really cool. Sometimes the game looks beautiful, and sometimes really gruesome. I'll often stop just to admire the scenery. A temple under siege at sunset. A field of flowers in the moonlight. An underground torture chamber with monsters hanging from the walls and ceilings. The art direction is just great. What I like is that they always choose the best lighting for the environment, even if it isn't realistic. You can walk out of a bright and sunny forest and into an autumnal scene, and watch the lighting rapidly change from white to a deep orange. The sun and moon don't follow the rules of time, but instead do whatever looks the most pretty, which was a great decision. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3548997012 Challenge I played about half the game before version 1.5, and half after, so this is a bit tough to judge. But it seems like the game is the most difficult in the beginning, before you have access to a variety of moves and magic. I died a lot to early-game bosses, but the final few bosses rarely took many tries. Some moves are absolutely broken against certain bosses, and will make them trivial. That's mostly what I have to say. I was tempted to give a negative review to voice my complaints about the censorship, but I wanted to be honest. And, honestly, even with the flaws and disappointment, I still liked this game. At first, it might seem like a generic souls clone, but it gets a lot more interesting after a few hours. Edit: The real problem is that the late Ming-early Qing invasion involved huge civilian massacres, which left lasting scars on collective memory. In stories and pop culture set in that time, the heroes are almost always fighting against the invaders, not joining them to slaughter innocents. The game marketed itself to players expecting that perspective, only for them to find out they were actually playing as the invaders. The game producer was fully aware of this, so in the initial version they hid what the game was actually about and some key lines from the Chinese version of the game, only revealing them to players using other languages.

I enjoy a lot of the gameplay, level and character design, bosses, combat etc... however the optimization is the absolutely worst garbage I've seen in a long time. Getting 80fps with 40fps 1% lows on a 4090 in a tiny enclosed room with DLSS on is insane. And the "fix" the developers have released right now simply locks you out of higher quality settings instead of actually fixing the issues. There's clearly something broken under the hood, and until they fix it I simply can't recommend the game despite liking it a lot.

This one hurts to not recommend as the game itself is great. It's the most fun I've had with a souls-like since Bloodborne/Lies of P and I'd argue the level design is the best we've seen since Sekiro. It also ran great on my end too (which I know it hasn't for many so beware of that). However, the devs have caved to Chinese nationalists and censored the game heavily. No, they didn't censor what you're thinking they did. Instead, they censored the story in a way that affects the gameplay too. The story was a pretty interesting take on the Buddhist concept of reincarnation and samsara through a Chinese lens with some pretty gnarly horror concepts thrown in there too. I really enjoyed it and since it's a souls-like, these story concepts are explored through gameplay and boss fights. Unfortunately, due to the aforementioned censorship, the story has been made contradictory and nonsensical. Apparently, Chinese nationalists have a huge issue with the content of the game because the people you are fighting against, the Ming Dynasty, are being killed by you and none of the Manchurians are present in the game at all. Due to this, Leenzee has censored the game's story so you can no longer actually kill anyone in the Ming Dynasty. This includes bosses, soldiers, and sometimes citizens as well. You can't attack the soldiers or citizens and the bosses become "exhasted" after the fight and talk to you now. In a game exploring the horrors of rebirth through reincarnation, not being able to kill these demonized versions of soldiers and bosses is ludicrous and completely goes against the story they were telling. Additionally, it makes many portions of the game a whole lot easier now that you can't fight the soldiers. It really is a shame because this game was one of the good ones that I had enthusiastically recommended to friends and family. They could have left the censorship out of the non-Chinese versions of the game, but yet again we have a developer that decides to censor everything instead of put in the actual work to keep the non-Chinese version censorship free. You personally may not care about censorship, but censorship does care about you.

Wanted to like it, performance was fine, the actual gameplay feels stiffer than dark souls 1 and animation locks you like crazy. Tried to get a feel for it but it just felt like the character and the enemies were operating at two different levels of speed where the enemies can act uninterrupted constantly and you need 7 business days to deliver your attacks to their address.

It would have been an 8/10 at least if not for certain parts of the game holding it back: Getting knocked down makes you get punished MASSIVELY, 99/100 time lead to death because bosses or enemies can get a 2nd attack off quickly + recovery is TOO SLOW - same goes for healing, it's too slow. Elevators in this game are SO SLOW IT MAKES ME MAD, I had to wait a minute for one elevator after respawning, and I cannot even send it back down after I ride it up so that I won't have to wait forever again every time I die (specifically this is for the elevators in the final area, but across the entire game it is indeed too slow). Shrine (bonfires in this game) placements are really poor, there's so few Shrines in this game the boss run backs are straight up tedious and very unfun. This is 2025, don't just be exactly like Dark Souls 1, use it as a reference and IMPROVE on it - Do what Elden Ring did and let us respawn right before bosses or place Shrines before them (only 1 or 2 bosses in this game has NO run backs IIRC). Level design is actually pretty nice but it can also be quite tedious to navigate, especially due to shrine placements. And this will also tie into my next point. Too many 'screw you' moments where enemies jump at me from nowhere or try to push me off a ledge, this gets especially annoying each time I respawn to run back to where I last died to collect my red mercuries (what souls are in this game). The reason soulsbourne games excel at this is because moments like these are actually rather rare, not all the time. Quests in this game can easily get broken, leading you to a bad ending (I got bad ending) - punishing me for exploring too much is not the way, especially with the way the levels/areas of the game are designed. How am I supposed to know there is only ONE correct way to go in order to progress NPC quests properly? Sure the NPC icons in the teleport menu are helpful (a very nice QOL) but it doesn't help that for those like me who love to explore everything will just end up breaking quests. Transmog in this game should be reworked so that individual pieces aren't tied to a transmog gear, it is very annoying. Do what Monster Hunter World or Cyberpunk did instead, that way I don't have to equip the transmog again everytime I want to change my stats. Performance: I have a high end PC so I never really ran into these issues. However, the fact that DLAA is actually fake resolution is quite scummy coming from the devs (IIRC 100% (DLAA) actually runs at around 67% of the actual resolution). The whole 0-100 DLSS slider should just not be a thing, instead have options like most other games. AND GIVE US THE ABILITY TO TURN DLSS OFF. However, there are several things worth praising about in this game: General feel of combat is solid and well executed, dodges feel responsive as well as attacks. Skyborn Might system is great: Effectively a unique kind of mana system where perfect dodges or certain attacks in a combo string etc will grant you 1 point of mana to use spells or enhanced weapon abilities. Skill tree, while I feel like it could be better, I do like that your weapon enhancement (+1 to +10) is dependant on it rather than having to invest resources into every single weapon you come across. Bonus for free respeccing. Graphics, not high fidelity and whatnot, but it looks stunning with its art direction and style and unique biomes. One thing I'm more neutral about is: Boss fights, beautiful boss designs, the fight themselves are fun BUT due to the aforementioned issues I had, it really bogs the experience down, besides most of them lean towards the easy. Devs also need to QA test these bosses more because there were some attacks that were kind of awkward. Overall still a fun experience nonetheless. I do know the game will get an update later this month as of the time of this review which will fix most of the issues I am complaining about. Therefore I do not recommend this game in its current state. For me it's a 6.5/10 despite my enjoyment of the game, I actually quite enjoyed it a lot! Just that there are some issues that definitely hamper the experience that feels rather frustrating instead of reasonably challenging.

I just finished Wuchang, and here are some of my thoughts on the game—especially when putting it side by side with Wukong: Wuchang outshines Wukong in many ways. Better in what sense? Well, pretty much across the board: the skill tree system, level design, storyline ending, and combat mechanics all feel more polished and rewarding. The skill tree is massive and diverse—it actually gave me a headache trying to decide what to upgrade, since unlocking one skill often leads to a bunch of others. It’s the kind of depth that makes you plan carefully and feel rewarded for it. One of the coolest features is how flexible the weapon upgrade system is. You don’t have to stress about which weapon to invest in—even the rare +10 upgrade stones don’t lock you in. That alone sets it apart from other Soul-like games. The level design is incredibly detailed, visually breathtaking, and tightly interconnected. It feels like every corner is crafted with intention. Now let’s talk difficulty—it’s hard. Really hard. But also fair. The game punishes your mistakes, not your patience. It’s brutal but never feels cheap. The upgrade systems for your character, items, weapons, and armor are all worth diving into—each piece feels like it contributes something meaningful to your build. Also, the fashion? Top-tier. Sexy? Yep. Cute? Absolutely. They’ve nailed the style. All in all, this is an outstanding game—easily one of the most worthwhile purchases I’ve made this year.

The game starts off strong but after a certain boss everything afterwards becomes absolutely trash and you think it will get better but it in fact just gets worse and worse as time goes on... there are so many ambushes in this game it's hard to count them all... nearly invisible mines in the ground, fruit (?) that drops from the sky that instantly blights you and takes away 70% of your hp because you can only have 4 (3) items in your quick bar and it's borderline impossible to use your inventory mid-combat since a single hit will knock you out of the menu (and probably just kill you outright) the run-back for some of these bosses that can instantly kill you straight from the fog gate can take several minutes so most of the time you spend more time running back than you do actually fighting a boss. It's just terrible to be honest.

This is NOT a Souls clone. I struggled a lot with the game at first because everyone online says it's just another copy of the Souls formula that doesn't innovate. This is profoundly incorrect. The people complaining about the game's difficulty are struggling because they can't see the game for what it is. They're trying to play it as something it is not. Firstly, it's more akin to Bloodborne with much faster rolls but with a perfect roll mechanic. The bosses do attack almost relentlessly so you might be tempted to play the game how you play Elden Ring. However unlike in ER (specifically the DLC) where they spam attacks just for the sake of making the fight a dodge slog followed by the occasional 2 frame attack window, in Wuchang you actually have tools to deal with spam. The clash system is perfect for dealing with relentless melee attacks. It allows you to take very reduced damage while dealing poise and hp damage to the boss or enemy. And you can't use clash mindlessly. It doesn't work against unarmed attacks or grabs so you must also dodge. Some attacks are too strong to simply clash through as well which is where the parry mechanic comes in. In ER you have to parry an arbitrary amount of times to eventually get an opportunity for a crit. In Wuchang parrying will actually STOP their attack spam. This makes parrying a much more versatile and nuanced tool. Sometimes you might want to parry and then heal. Sometimes you might want to parry and finish building their poise meter up. Sometimes you parry just to alleviate the pressure for a moment. And that's the difference: In Elden Ring you just roll through the relentless string of attacks. In Wuchang you have multiple options to stay engaged in the fight even while the boss is as aggressive as possible. Another key difference is that basically anything you unlock is done through the skill tree which you can reset at any time. Even weapon upgrading and upgrading your healing flask are done here. So play Wuchang not as a souls clone (the game will punish you for it) but as Wuchang. It makes everything so much better. Now, it is true that there's a lot of traps and ambushes in this game. A LOT. Almost every combat instance has them. This is a matter of opinion. I love Dark Souls 2 and it has a similar style. People say the runs to bosses take too long but I haven't found a single boss that doesn't have a shrine right next to it. Is the game perfect? Is it as refined as Lies of P? No. But it is very fun once you stop playing it like a Souls clone. If you take anything from this it should be this: combat is designed to award ACTIVE PARTICIPATION over PASSIVE ROLLING and that is a fantastic design philosophy.
